mossback, dodos? what the heck am i missing. we called mossbacks calicos over 5 lbs. back in the day my grand dad called the warm evening winds Santanas. when people moved up from the south the name changed to santa anas winds. several years ago a ksby weather lady from colarado renamed them to chinook winds and again the name changed to sundowers from the land down under. Maybe Steve " the fishmaster" can help me here. what is a central coast mossback or dodo?

Greetings,
OK...this is the craziest story that you will EVER hear. I kid you not, but this guy accidently "caught" a 12' Great White shark last week out of Depoe Bay (where I fished on Friday) with a crab pot. I'm sure you're thinking B.S. Well check out the real story and the pics. I don't see how the heck this guy actually pulled this thing in!!! I mean a full crab pot is heavy...but not that heavy!
Enjoy

With regards to MPA's the DFG web site is somewhat confusing, imagine that! Is there a difference in the blue SMCA areas and RED SMR areas or are both areas restricted to sportfishing. Thanks

David; WE did have rock fish, threw back a short ling...We were almost exclusively halibut fishing. I have been keeping a couple of rigs set up w/sabikis because there has been so much sardina in the water...We were running low on our 1/2 scoop from deke and when we'd role em up to check our baits there were tons of followers just out of sight. I thought they were sardines? I was going to replentish the bait... Thats what I meant buy "jigging" Had alot of raked baits. All three uf us were fishing stingers. Brought in some baits with the tail chewed off just behind the stinger...HOW DO THEY KNOW? Slow meant 3 guys 1 sand sole. We were going to go rock fishing after we had no halibut. But when we caught those smelt went back to halibut...This is probably more thn you wanted to know. Later

Greetings,
Hey guys thanks for covering my back...jeas a guy gets busy fishing for a few days and gets reamed by in idiot. Hey Louie...if you know where I live why don't you stop by my house and tell me this to my face like a man!
Anyhow...Oregon fish report. Finally got out for a tuna ride on Thursday. Fished on a sweet 28' alum out of the Columbia River. No wind and SW wind pushed 59 degree water all the way to the beach. No hard breaks so the fish have spread out. We scratched away all day with singles and doubles for 21 fish in the box between 25-35 pounds. Awesome day on the water with no wind and a bonus pod of Orcas on the way in!!! Very cool.
Fished coho today out of Depoe Bay. Warm water on the beach was not good for the salmon either. Fished all day for 8 take-downs, 3 fish to the boat and 1 hatchery coho. What a difference from 2 weeks ago when it was wfo.
Heading out crabbing today and home tomorrow.
Hope you guys find the tuna at home.
best fishes,
steve

WEATHER/SST/CHLOROPHYLL
If the forecast/models hold we should have some very good weather next week . By wednesday both the wind and swell should be down here and maybe a little sooner at Monterey.
The blue water looks to be about 70 out of Morro NW , about 80 out of PSL SW and about 50 out of Monterey.
Still waiting for Terrafin to post a chlorophyll. They seem to have access to better data then Tembreak or the general public.

Those fresh sardines are excellent appitizers. Head & gut, scale with the hose water spray, cook with olive oil, salt & garlic, grill hot & fast well done. The small anchovies are good deep fried whole too. The squid is always a nice consolation prize when the seabass don't bite. Obviously, I've had to eat the bait more than once!

Jocelyn;
That plume below the 1908 is also a very clean blue, maybe even purple, water. Hope it keeps coming. The water to the northwest is now pretty green. Which is no surprise because it has been blowing 30 with 9ft 7 sec swell.

Those bubbles on Tempbreak look better than anything I've seen in years around here.

The one at the Davidson seems a bit weak, but produced fish...so....

I like the one S/W of 1908 although it seems a bit hot, but it might produce exotics...
Good going

Anyone interested in catching sardines go to the Hartford pier[PSL] and use a sabiki rig. The bay is absolutely full of sardines. Birds and seals going nuts. Bring the kids they will have a great time. I saw 100s of sardines caught between 5 and 8pm yesterday.

There is a good chance of a chlorophyll shot today as the marine layer is gone. That plume towards the Davidson has moved in a few miles since the last good shot so that is a good thing. Now if the blue water has come with it will the LFT be far behind ?

Both plumes on temp break look good but the one near the davidson held biting fish.
they both have edges about 80NM from PSL
morro boats that can reach, might be better at the area inside the davidson.
If the southern water moves inward and fish are hooked that will be the ticket for psl boats if the wind lays down. wind laying down maybe tuesday?

Nice SST on TempBreak for 8/12. Boy, there is a big blob of very warm water coming up from the south. Maybe we will get some exotics up here in the next few weeks.

The Rockcod has been steady with 3/4 to full limits lots of lings and the halibut have been

Josh--I've fished the Klamath every year for some 30+ years. I've had some stellar trips up there. The info Nick gave you is right on! Let me add a little. Timing is everything. Middle of August is coming toward the end of the main steelhead push and the start of the Salmon run. If no boat available Blakes riffle is your best bet. If after salmon, it's a little early, especially since the Yurok indians get almost 95% of all salmon entering the river until they meet their quota. You need a boat to access the river mouth, though not a jet. Outgoing tide is when the fish move up. The bigger tides seem to get more fish moving in. The special rig Nick refered to is a fixed lead (2-4 oz depending on current) with an 8-12ft leader, 2/0 barbless hook with maybe a bead and/or a piece of yarn to float it off the bottom. This is a fantastic fishery and this year should be epic (if we can get the indians to follow the rules). I also highly recommend jumping on one of the many guide boats ($200-300/day). If you need recommendations let me know. I'll be there 3rd week of September staying at the Camper Coral.

It's about time you posted something big guy Reggie. I guess the standard is set for this board about bashing one or more of its premier members. Like that one tee shirt says, "Shut up and fish!"

Good to hear you put a few on the Graylight Stuart. Was wondering how you did while busting my ass at work.

As a young guy learning the water and earning my own salt, I had the privilage of being able to call Harrell and just shoot the shiit. I had a friend in San Deigo that was dabbling in satelite images that showed upwelling and how to find clean water for scientific purposes. It was Harrell that took those images and did overlays for us before Terrafin was doing it. And I know many of us over the years have felt a little more secure on the water knowing we could get Harrell on the radio if something were to go wrong.

Nice job on the flat ones Harrell!

I am a little late to this string of Louie attacks and I will not contribute. I do not know Harrel, but he did offer help with bounce balling when I inquired a few months back. Steve truly is the man. Without his generous contributions of bait a few months back, I would not have scored my personal best halibut. Thanks again for that great day Steve. Long live the Baja Special!

Just got back from fishing the Kenai River in Alaska. We had a great trip in spite of the river being at flood stage. We fished for Sockeye (Reds in Alaska speak).

Tuna report. We got up to Monterey at 9:30 Monday night splashed the boat and tried to make bait but no luck only thousands of jelly fish.We left Tuesday morning and went 30 to 45 miles for 9 lft from 12 to 20lbs all jig fish except for one on a Mega bait. Other guys did way better but the fresh tuna on the bbq was real good. Lots of love on the water super friendly with everybody working together sharing numbers. Im glad I went the distance. Graylight

Josh, (Conman),
Here is a good site for info about fishing the Klamath http://usafishing.com/klamath.html I assume your are heading to the lower Klamath river?
If you don't have a boat, your options are limited to fishing the mouth of the river where it goes into the ocean (mostly snagging fish in the mouth. They call it line-ing. A special setup is needed.) It can be chaotic at the mouth, but can have an awesome payoff if you hit it on a good day (I've had a couple 10+ salmon days).

The other option is fishing upstream at the first good riffles with bait or lures. These are called Blakes riffle and Trewer riffle. Good luck.
-Anglr200

p.s. make sure to follow all regulations: 2 salmon per day, barbless hooks, etc.

A disagreement is fine, but if you make a personal attack you should at least stand up and sign your real name to it. Many thanks to the "valleys" and others for the recent tuna explorations. Steve, thanks for all the great information shared on this site.

You can fool the fans in the stands, but not the players on the field. I know many of you already, but offer my support and thanks to Harrel, Mel, and Bob for keeping us informed and organized. Sorry dude, you are wrong again Louie. Steve Hendricks is a Local. I went to SLOHS with him and his older brother, a fine family that doesn't need to qualify with you. I think you are the kook here, and stop yourself before we get unfriendly. Tight pussy buddy right? As for me My name is Reggie, and bring lunch, it is going to be a long day. Ask around you can find me pretty easily, if not I'll give you directions where to go. Shut your pie hole
