I think it would be more productive to start a petition regarding the Sea Lion/Seal population
including some scientific proof (backed up with facts)in regards to the damage being done by an unchecked population of fish eaters such as these.
I would think that the powers that be could not ignore a legit complaint backed up by proven facts about the damage being done to rock fish populations, baitfish, beaches(E-Coli counts), property(Boats, docks, bait pens!)...Regardless of what the enviro's think, the fact is plain and simple...There are too many Sea Lions. They already got permission to "remove" some real problem lions up in Ore/Wash which were killing untold numbers of endangered salmon on the Columbia....Maybe with the right people and scientific proof of a problem being presented, there could be hope of doing something...until then, everyone can complain all they want, but to no avail I'm afraid.......

Love to pipe in on the sealion debate. Did a little bit of research for a presentation a while back and though my numbers do not agree with Bobs, I think that they are still shocking. A census (yes with your tax dollars did ya think fidel was paying) was taken in 92' on san miguel which found about 180,000 ca. sealions. Later they followed up and found the population going up at 5% per year which I admitt seems low. Extrapolotated that out with biomass consumption per furbag and ya get about 1.8 trillion (Obama talk) pounds in 2007. The DFG website says that recreational fisherman took about 7,000,000 lbs in 2007 or about 0.4% of what the sealion took. this doesn't include stellars or knotheads. I suggested at a party that the displaced commercial draggers be given tags to take sealions and then sell them to the dept. of corrections. I was asked to leave don't know what they love more sealions or criminals.

Evening all
First off I want to thank all who attended the
harbor meeting last night, the guys who spoke during the public comment, and all the letters of support from you guys. Myself and Del really
appreciate the way you guys rallied behind us.
Looks like wea are good foe another year but, we
are probably going to get a proposal together to
stay longer.
We have had a few boats out the last couple days
with full limits lots a lings and only a half dozen halibut. Still waiting for the tuna to show, hopefully soon.
Thanks again
Good Fishin
Marty

Great news about the lease Marty. Congrats.

Anyone know who controls or is responsible for the pelicans at the cleaning station. I want to know who to sue when one of those cannibalistic birds scars a little kid. I saw one take down a 4 year old and peck at its head. It is only a matter of time before some little guy gets scared for life. These birds are fearless. The crowds think it's cute until their little Mary is gang raped by a flock of nasty sword like Pterodactyls. Man I hate those birds! I had one on the roof looking down at me pecking my hat. I would have paid a thousand dollars to blast them all with a shotgun last weekend! Seriously there should be some control of these animals. We would not let people violate our children or personal space why do we have to let these animals violate us and our property.

Bob, we could only wish for such a die off. Marine Mammal Center, et al will be there to nurse every one of them back to health, regardless of the cost!

Speaking of die-off, that reminds me...on our way up to Pecho last Friday, we passed 4 seal floaters, one juvenile and 3 adults, spread out between the breakwater and Pea Patch. Maybe it's starting.

California Sea Lions Average annual food consumption of males in zoos increases with age to stabilize at approximately 4,000 kg (8,818 lbs)/year by the age of 10 years. Females showed a rapid increase in average annual food consumption until they were 3 years old. Thereafter, females housed outdoors averaged 1,800 kg (3,968 lbs)/year.[10]and a lot more in the wild....these stats are ref to just two Sea Lions.....

The sealion population was controlled at a level of approximately 20,000 by the DFG. They actually paid a bounty at times. In 1971 there was a lot of political concern over the bycactch of porpoise by the tuna industry. So our congress took control away from the states by passing the Marine Mammal Protection Act. This resulted an explosion in their population to nearly 500,000 sealions and seals today as a result of the removal of their natural predators. These animals consume approximately 7% of their body weight per day. With the average weight at about 3-400 pounds per sealion; they consume about 12 million pounds of fish per day. A study at Santa Barbara Island concluded that 1/3 of their diet consisted of juvenile rockfish. So this year they eat about 4.5 billion pounds of fish verses only 178 million pounds in 1971. I would welcome someone comparing those numbers with the human annual take. Besides sinking the boats, taking over beaches, and depleting our fishery, there have been recent attacks on people including several in our local waters. Adding to the problem is the tons they defecate into our bays; since there are no more shell fish to clean the water as a result of the sea otters. You are legally within your rights to protect your home and property from a human perpetrator but its a felon to harass a sealion. Their population has grown between 7 and 15% per year. We are already seeing a dramatic impact on the food chain. Like the rise and fall of other marine species, I predict the sealions will ultimately experience a catastrophic die off because of disease and starvation. But before that happens watch for proposals to use your tax dollars for sealion hospitals.

PSL AKA Port Sea Lion (last 2-3 years).
is located Off Olde port Beach behind the
Furbag Jetty. It consists or A pier with Several
Sea lion covered landings, and the bottom and beach are littered with sunken Vessels .
Most have Broken platforms, crushed Rails, demolished fittings and Scat Piles.
Snow fence and Spike strips have some affect but
great whites are the best medicine short of open hunting season as in pioneer days.

Note the platform on the harbor patrol boat, it has maybe 5-6 red fender/mooring balls so the furbags cant mount her easily.
Ive had them on my bait tank lid, on my plastic dingy, on my coaming while im trying to sleep and of course attached to salmon on lines .
great fun for the kids to see, tourists love them
small boat owners fear them, Great whites eat them. they even got into the work dock chainlink last week. a dozen will sink a 20footer like a toy, every Aid to navigation on the chart is also covered with them.
didnt used to be this bad, I wonder how much they eat and what? sardine? but sooner or later they should move on when the food source does???

Harrel, great to hear the news on the launch!Looks like we are going to run down to San Diego on Thursday to fish. They are catching Albacore and Blue Fin out about 90 miles. Just a normal run for us out of Mooro Bay up here. They are spoiled down there if they have to run over 40 miles. Barry hook up the boat and meet us down in San Diego, we have to get you some fish!!!Will post with the results!!!!

Thanks, and Way To Go on the 32 pounder. I really love that "Talcott" area also, but it can get kind of wild up there with the Northern exposer.

That sucks to be so close and yet so far , there were several boats that went past us on the water , we just boxed the area and could not miss , we put out our # several times to try and get some more guys hooked up , but they were eaither also hooked up OR did not hear us , we had a newby on board and now he thinks ALL ALBI trips are like that one , I burst his bubble already , i told him , YOU SEE ALL THE PAINT WORN OFF THEM JIJS , ITS NOT FROM SO MANY FISH , ITS FROM BEING DRUG AROUND THE OCEAN FOR SO LONG.
To bad CHARLIE did not find them , all our fish were in 58.6 water also.
IM rested now and ready for another trip. Also for anyone going down , we used the launch at the coast guard jetty , 16.00 all days , and your out quick .

Nice flattie, Rick....I was behind Cruz making bait and tail fishing behind capa Sunday and saw a couple of stripers pass by; maybe one was you....weather was pretty sweet Sunday for sure but fishing was slow; did manage a 25lb (on the scale) tail though on a mac around 2pm....then we had a monster thresher on for 45 minutes, chased her down for four miles....saw her four times before the dropper loop gave....we weren't prepared!

Hi Gang,

I was going to run out of Moss for Tuna on Sat., but I couldn't get a crew together in time, so I decided to "Solo" bounce ball at Rosa Sat.& Sunday for flatties. Sat. was gusting 20 to 25, but I did manage a nice 8 pounder after several takedowns. Sunday I nailed a 44 pound 4ft long flattie in near perfect conditions. Unfortunetly, it turminated my trip, because I was 45 miles offshore, and the 23ft Striper didn't have a hold big enough for my prize. So, not wanting to see the meat spoiled, I hot footed it for home in a hurry, squirting it on the cockpit deck with the wash down hose periodicly, to keep it moist.

Admiral got 12 Albacore and ran about 73 miles up towards the Davidson. Talked to the crew when they came in and they metered lots of fish but they weren't having much interest in coming up and taking bait/jigs. Charlie took the boat further up but the water got colder as they went so he turned back to get the last one before running back in. They said the ocean wasn't too rough up there at all, which was fortunate!

Report 8/22 Monterey: Nice size swell on the Stbd. bow, heading at 255 for 45nm., vs. three hanging on the Whaler: We got our asses handed to. Two separate jig strikes on the black and purple on the inside and above of the numbers mentioned. 57.6 F. Nice sleigh ride home though!

That's a 'negative' on me towing the Whaler north. I was on an invite out of PSL for rockfish on a buddy's Davis. The Whaler's ready to head north though, as that's looking to be the way to go. Gotta get some work projects rolling in the meantime and watch what's happening up there.

Good job on the slayin' you and Matt put on 'em. I hope to partake in some of that soon!

We were approaching, hailing and preparing to offer/render any assistance when the Guy fires up, gets underway and tears off northward at high speed. May have been shut down to pee or some such, we dont know. but he took off and never responded. once he was underway and on plane without a look back at us I had to presume he was OK. Be assured that we have a "samaritan" attitude toward boats far offshore that may have need of assistance. I didnt try other vhf channels as the vessel was high tailing it away by then. we encountered him drifting in the dead calm, engine appeared off,no gear deployed then vroom /jackrabbit gone. a bit unusual.
I will try and choose and arrange words more carefully. over.

Fished Friday out of Moss landing. First 40 miles were ok, last 20 were definitly bumpy. Started at 36 30, 122 50. Headed south and began to get multiple hookups. Didn't get to grounds until noon. Got sixteen (16) and headed to the barn. Hit sun fish and spun prop for a long slow ride home. High Voltage and two others headed out Saturday Morning to the same area.

Jim G , Like Matt posted it is not looking good for tuesday out of Monterey or here. In fact all week is not looking good. Gale above SF is pushing high short swell into both areas and with any wind at all makes for a bumpy ride at best !
Cape San Martin buoy is around 7ft 7sec this morning so the Admiral is the right boat to be on at the Davidson today unless you get seasick !

The one on the meat is a trematode parasite...but it harmless to humans. I'd still probably scape it off though. Not sure what the one in the mouth is though. Did it look the same?
Here are some pics...did it look like this?

Jim, here is the forecast for tues from the NOAA site on Monterey buoy.
NW WINDS 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 3 TO 6 FT.
NW SWELL 6 TO 8 FT AND S 3 TO 4 FT. PATCHY FOG.
I interpret that as a recipe for a good A## kicking with the mixed swell and big wind wave on top of it. Discretion is the better part of valor.
Question for anyone who knows? Some of the fish we caught last trip had a mustard color stuff on the inside of the mouth that looked like fungus. It was also on the outside of the meat under the skin and when scraped by a knife popped like a blister. Curious as to what it is and if there are any health risks.

Doug kept this load of bait on the boat so he still has some good bait. Mostly sardines with a few small chovies and squid mixed in. Too much fuel to keep the water flowing though so it's going in the pens after you guys get what you need in the morning. No telln' how long it'll last after that. Should have the fence up and be back in operation by next w/e.

Admiral just left for tuna. We'll see tomorrow . . .

Went out of Monterey Thursday and Friday with the fleet, bagged 21 tuna. Although the water was very sloppy on Friday, there was still a lot of fish being caught.

LATE/LONG REPORT OFFSHORE THUR 8/20 B.A. And Jim
Launched PSL 5:30am loaded up with generous half scoop of 4"average anchovies with a few small dines mixed in, plenty good bait from Deke. put up outriggers,Headed out 275deg 22+ knots, put 6 lines in at ~50NM ~8:30am in blue 61.5F water.
Saw ~21-24' Radon/Davis type boat at about 60nm White with lt. Green trim, stopped dead. Hailed 68 &16 no response. Oh well.
Vessel crossed port -stbd bow about 3/4 mile out and headed aprox 0 deg N at high speed. thought they may have had info ? We heard distant boats, partial conversations ,no definite info. maintained course until 80nm then turned southeast toward birds and bait, lots of small patches of bait and assorted bird activity.
trolled every which way, added 7th line, chummed, metered, called for info, no luck, water
as close to parking lot flat as it gets 80miles out. Thought of Louie every time we heard PanPan or Mayday, some guy was taking on water in front of monterey aquarium! we were closer to Monterey than Morro but too far to hear the Vhf reports clearly of the monterey Carnage.
Hailed Windfall and Catmakai twice each with no contact. Fished back to 40miles water cooled so we pulled gear and ran. Engine bogged at35miles
but ran smooth at lower load, new fuel pre-flowscan filter caught too much sediment, gave it a whack(have 3spares if needed)all fine. ran again until 17NM, we both saw large sardine type bait being chased by about 8-10 airborne Bonito or very large mackerel(in cold green water)tried again for a few passes , no luck. Ran back as darkness fell a bit of wind chop now at out stern. Back at Port Sea lion just after dark. dropped jim off at landing covered with sea lions, took a few minutes for us to get ramp clear or one big bull. anchored at pier 1 for godo nights sleep. Friday morningMEt up with jim & a bit of fuel, part of the thursday bait was still kicking(well cured) left harbor 6:30
and met wind chop 1-2 foot but almost no swell.
decided to leave the tunas alone and went on to "slay" 20 black blue and yellow rockfish.
returned, not much action on bigger stuff.
filleted fish, talked with a few of you and wrote marty a recomendation to the district.
we probably Should have listened to Mike Hagens and driven to monterey maybe, good work guys.
we will have to eat rockfish for another week.
The wasabi and soy has been riding a lot of boat miles this month. maybe next week if weather holds? Big Wayne, dont get your boat fixed so the fish will bite! No fish love found but ready to go at again soon. bait taxi and skunk fighting didnt beat us up this time but we lost.

Ian Halibut

My star student from this summer. Ian kept asking me about halibut fishing before class and after class (and sometimes during break). He tried several times off the pier and shore. He even bought a kayak and tried that a few times....still nada. Well he got his first halibut yesterday:-) These are a little over 24 inches!!!

Doug has a fresh load mostly sardines, some 3-4" chovies. The sea lions beat up most of the last load. He figures 95% loss on the load before that one too. One big knot head broke into four receivers in two days. Couldn't get in through the sides so he came up on the dock and destroyed the lids. Once while we were right there on the boat before we could run him off. He bit Chuck, fortunately missed the skin but left a couple holes in his jeans! We have an electric cattle fence up now until we can get a barrier in place. Time and money. If someone's around the fence will be off or come alongside the boat instead of the dock.

Monterey was WTFO on Friday for tuna. We stopped a few miles short of 36'30/122'50 to get the jigs in and in less than ten minutes BAMMO! double hookup. We worked the same area all day for an epic day. most of the knockdowns were doubles, triples or quads if we left the boat in gear for a ten count after to first fish. We decided to pull the jigs in when we pulled the fish out of their slush baths to find that we had 33 in the box. Weather was a little sloppy but fishable. think it might be building over the weekend, bummer. here some photos of the carnage.

Greetings,
Fished PSL today in the skiff. Stopped by Deke's but he told uw all he had was pinner chovies...thanks for telling us what you had before baiting us up! He then told us where to go to make bait. What a great guy! He's going to make more bait tomorrow, so hopefully he'll have sardines for the weekend. We made some nice dines in short order and headed N.
Weird S wind drifted us across our normal path, but we got a 28 & 24 inch fish by 8 a.m. We were stoked! Then we had a 4 hour dry spell with only 2 raked baits, 3 short lings and 1 bolina:-( Finally got a fat 33" fish around 1 pm. All fish were in about 60' of water...we fished from 65-35'.
Nice day on the water. A little chop coming in from the outside, but it didn't blow more than 10 on the inside. It was foggy but nice until about 1 when the breeze picked up. Ohwell...so much for the forecast.
Good luck to those that venture out this weekend.
best fishes,
steve

Great day on the water yesterday... Almost too great. Mirror-like conditions @ 75 mi out. Bloodied the deck with 1 troll & 2 bait. Very scratchy @ best. Water temp 60/61.

Now to the guy who cut across our bow @ 4:30 AM
R U stupid or what ? Drunk ?

This Radon-like boat cut us off doing 22kts. Had we not slowed we would've had a collision for sure. Then the boat flips a U'e & heads back toward the rock. 5 min later he's following our work light @ a distance of 1/2 mi.
Last we saw of the idiot as Skipper Mark pushed the Pices to 25 knts to keep a safe distance.
NOT a good feelin' when someone crosses your bow in pitch black and nobody else around.
Nice to have met you Shawn & Pablo... Fish-On

We had 16 on Wednesday 50 miles wsw of monterey before noon as well. could have loaded the boat but we had all we needed so we decided to stop. Aroud 10:30 or so the bite went ballistic. We could not get all our gear back in the water without getting bit. We farmed one fish. Sounds like some of us need to sharpen our hooks.LOL

What a difference a day makes. We went to John's #'s and out to 80 mi. Conditions looked the same as my last five trips and the results were the same. Never saw a jumper. No hits. The counts for the other boats we could see or hear were very poor. Then to top things off at 75 mi I turn on the bilge pump and out comes fuel. The leak came from my fuel pump which seemed to work fine at higher speeds so we called it a day at 3:00. The most excitement came trying to dock the boat in my slip during a 6 foot tide change.
