Chip, thanks for the invite to Cabo, I'd love to go but I just can't swing it now.It was cool last time when we tried to bait those marlin, caught the dodo's, used the line snapping trick & I got that sail on #20 string(did I leave anything out).how many days are you going to fish & which days & what's the cost, because if I can find a way to go I will.No matter, I'm sure you'll kill'em Chip, just wish I could too, wish I bought the original hitchhiker also.My drag screams so I don't have too, but not lately.Fish on, Jeff

Hugh or others interested in Klamath fishing,
Just got back from several days camping on the river. Combat all the way at the mouth and upstream riffles. The bite is hit and miss but was never completely red hot while I was there, but can happen at any time. The fish come up river on outgoing tides and most people at the mouth were fishing beads, thread or corkies...lining techniques. Long limber 8-9 foot poles and lighter line-like 15 lb was getting anglers far more hook ups and really long leaders 8-10 ft were more productive. Up river fresh roe was the ticket at the riffles and deep pools. Most salmon landed were averaging 18-20 lbs with some real toads thrown in. When I left on Monday the ocean was rough and completely broke over the mouth area making it dangerous for fisherman standing there. I went north to Bandon Oregon and set crab pots for Dungeness and got 11 keeper males in 2 hours of soaking in the bay. Slack tide only!! Oregon Crab Season closes Oct. 15 Apparently Charleston just to the north does far better but I wasn't complaining. Limit is 12 in Oregon but 10 in CA and not open now. Absolutely beautiful country up there. Tuna were still reportedly close to shore off southern Oregon like 10-20 miles but conditions did not allow access. This site rocks, long time reader fist time posting.

WEATHER/SST/CHLORO/TUNA PROSPECTS

The weather is forecast to be good wednesday and thursday both here and Monterey. There will still be some swell with thursday the lowest at 4-6 ft. Could also be some late afternoon breeze.

Good SST images yesterday here and Monterey with Monterey looking great with temp breaks as close as 25 miles out of Santa Cruz and 35 out of Monterey. Locally it looks like the best looking water is below the donut at about 60nm.

For some reason there were no Chlorophyll images posted from yesterday nor could I find any on coastwatch. Maybe they took the holiday off. Maybe today !

Right now Monterey seems to have the best potential for prospecting.

got out early monday before the wind picked up and headed north out of morro bay with my buddy bob. lots of wind chop with light wind as we came around the jetty. caught 3 halibut in the first two hours and one short white seabass(released)on our last drop. came in and saw heavy bird action at the mouth, meterd bait and fish so we dropped for nadda. came in before noon. good day on the water.

Monterey SST:

AS good as it gets ! 5-8 degree breaks at 35-45 nm. Waiting for chlorophyll to see if it is clean but betting it is ! There were five LFT caught on this break a couple of days ago. Might be a weather window wednesday.

fished MB on Sat and Sunday for decent fishing both days...On Saturday the halibut and bolina were biting in 65 ft just north of the rock inside the 10E..Good live bait from Darby>>>>Sunday I fished further up the line near the point in 80ft for a couple really nice lings and the usual assortment of bottom dwellers..The folks I had with me Sunday got seasick almost as soon as we left the jetty,so I did not do too much exploring once I found a few biters....Today was a bummer....I put 30 gallons of fuel in my tank yesterday afternoon, left the harbor with bait at 6:15am and ran out of gas just 10 minutes from the harbor entrance ....Apparently,there was a slight crime wave down on the docks last night and someone siphoned my tank ALMOST bone dry...I wish they had taken ALL of my fuel, rather than leaving me just enough to get into trouble...The USCG was very cool with an assist. and we were back at the dock by 8:30.I made a report at the Harbor Patrol office, and was told that a commercial vessel was recently siphoned for a bunch of diesel as well...It is a sad commentary on our community, but it looks like I will be shopping for a locking fuel cap......Jeff

Well, smarter folks than me are saying to stay off the water tomorrow so I guess I will do some honey dos. However, I had to run to Ventura yesterday and back today. The ocean was flat and a lot of boat activity off the oil platforms. What would all the boats be doing in that area? Tuna?

Any advice

Hugh,
If you head south on the 101 for 40 minutes to Trinidad, there is excellent fishing in the bay for rockfish, lings, etc. Easy beach launch, beautiful setting. Good luck.

Any body know a good place to fish the ocean in a
skiff for rock fish between Klamath and southern Oragon coast? I've been combat fishing in Klamath
crazy way of fishing. I had knnow idea this was a way to fish. I haven't nailed one but the crowd should die down after the weekend.

I have an almost new Piranha composite prop from a Suzuki 140 that I don't need anymore. It's part # 14.516A4. Or 14.5 inch diameter and 16 pitch-15 spline. These props have interchangable blades.
$50 or trades for some lures or a rod.

I would like to see someone get some use out of it!

Matt; I like and use them both because they complement each other. They usually use different satellites/sensors and at different times which gives us access to more data. If I could only have one it would be Terrafin because I like their processing better, such as color scaling and variety of individual areas to view.

I have been watching the boards/fish reports for San Diego. Looks like folks are doing very well down that way, anywhere between 10 and 40 miles out.

Wondering what the experts think of this ... is this a good indication that the tuna will be coming in closer in the upcoming weeks?

Thanks in advance,
Jake

Jim the water does not look great but still doable on Tuesday. Right now Thursday looks best. If your planning on only going 30 or 40 save your fuel and fish rockies or hailbut. There may be some fish in that close but I doubt it. To give yourself a good chance at fish you are going to have to get out to 34.36-121.53. 60 plus wsw of Morro Bay. Just my opinon. Good Luck

Since I dont have Terrafin I will head 30 or 40 miles North West....troll North for a few hours...if I do not get hooked up I plan to go near shore for rock cod.....I only get a few days off each summer so I have to get off the side lines and run...

Was fishing the Perch today as well Mike. Looks like you had a lot more luck than I did up in Cayucos. Was forced to fish the outgoing waiting for my kids to get out of school .... only farmed one fish and nothing hit the beach.

My heart goes out to Yugo and his family for the loss of a great man! Goshi was a blast to be around and he loved every customer that walked in the door.

From the beach I watched HUGE bait balls just South of Cayucos this morning ..... many blow ups on the surface and possible T-shart tail thrashing through them as well.

Hey Boys,
The fishing is bound to get real WFO here as I am leaving for the Islands for the month of September. Go get um, I will be reading Fish Reports. Will let you know how fish are doing on the west side of Hawaii also.
Aloha

Never found the squid this morn. Marked what looked like cudda and could have been wsb though there has been some big salmon around too. Hooked one big something, acted like big wsb. My buddy hit the line release by accident and snarled the reel, lost the fish. The baits on the bottom were getting raked so switched over to trap rigs (big sardines) and fished the bottom near the slot for two quick halibut in a row and went in. Seemed like 45' was the magic depth. Nothing on the iron. Should have rigged some traps earlier and would have had a couple more hali's for sure.

Just heard someone had a couple wsb near Mouse Rock last night. Almost went up there to look. If not there the shell mounds would be worth a look. They're here. Find the squid . . .

Read yesterday that Goshi of Tsurugi, located at the creamery in downtown SLO, passed away of stomach cancer on Monday also. This guy really knew how to do up the fresh fish. I'm sure many of you guys know of his kindness and hospitality. In lieu of flowers, bring #30 to #50 albacore. We just need to go get'em. The donut looks clean and hooked up finally to the outside. Just give us some good weather. Here's to "The Gosh", congrats to his new sushi bar up in heaven.

Hey Reno Jeff! You need to get closer to the salt water. Scott isn't online but hid did sell the original hitchhiker to Dorran. You might want to think about a roadtrip here in the next few weeks if the tuna begin to pop within range.

that's a nice c-bass, i gave that area a good look for squid this morning, then moved up to the 10e and toro but couldn't finger any squid. the last time they showed up in front of the rock was a last weekend of salmon season, which i think was the first weekend of sept...hmmmmm
i managed a monterey county limit of three flatties today up near estero point..made bait in the bay but planned on buying it until i realized my cash.....was safe at home. next time doug. fish were 12 to 16lbs? i didn't weigh them

Weighed in a 54 lb WSB this evening. Said he caught it on a blue n white jig in front of the rock from his kayak! They don't usually run alone. I'm going in the morning. If there's seabass, there should be some squid around. With the cuda's out there it should make for an interesting morning.

A sad note to report. I attended the memorial service of a very dear friend today. William (Bill) Miller passed away last Monday after a valiant fight against cancer. I will remember Bill for the rest of my life. I fished with bill many times over the last few years and worked with his lovely wife Marji at Twin Cities Hospital. The memorial was very moving and I send my very best wishes to his family and extended family. I am forever grateful to have known this man.

Bummed you didn't get into the 'cuda's Aaron. Can't believe that since we saw them everywhere. They were kind of acting "funny" though breezing and tailing along the surface:/
Has anyone caught any yet? Anyone hear if Michelle caught them yesterday?

Thanks for the report Steve. We launched at 5:30 and trolled until sunset for the barracudas. No fish for us. A few other boats out - one looked like the Rita G. Hopefully the fish hang around a while and someone can connect with them. Great ocean conditions and warm weather.

Reddog, I went to Anacapa a few weeks ago,and caught my limit of WSB. I was the only one using sliding sinkers!(On this day, the WSB did NOT run to the bait.) I kept it simple and put the bait right in front of them, instead of the bait going every which way with the current with dropper loops. Both fish were caught on small lively 3-4" chovys. Unfortunately I think if you fish like this around here, youre going to catch a boat load of gopher cod. Unless you get right on top of the WSB. Thats my two cents.

Darby;
I said almost the same thing earlier today. When you have this "monsoon heat" it can be calm out 20+ miles. One time it was just like today and we decided to run out west and look for albacore but we didn't even make twenty miles before we were forced to turn back.

Talked to Brett Cunningham today, one of the commercial fishermen whose reports I trust, said the water near the doughnut/inside escarpment looked really fishy. He was longlining and didn't see any jumpers but he knows what them albies like and said it looks good. For what it's worth. Also he said the ocean was glass 20 miles out.

I have been watching weather here for 30 years and scheduling fishing trips accordingly. The weather man knows best these days but one thing I don't think they've got into their computers is that when theres a jabasco off baja or big fires in LA basin, the wind don't blow or not as much as forcasted. Put that in your back pocket. What do you think Harell?

Going bait fishing now, should have something to feed the sea lions in the morning.

Greetings,
Fished with Cal Poly today just above San Simeon point. Pretty slow pick, but we did manage about 15-20 reds, a few coppers and a crap load of gophers! Not one single ling (sorry Jeremy I'm not counting your 7" fish!). I hooked up a big fish towards the end of the day...it felt solid and heavy, but wasn't fighting much. I got really confused when it began to surface 100' from the boat. Michelle thought a sea lion had grabed my fish. When it came into view I could see it was long and grey...."Shark!" I called out. It then came to the surface and a 3-4' long tail came flipping out of the water..."T-shark!!!" It finally realized it was hooked and sped off under the boat...unfortunately the barbless hook popped out of its mouth and it went by:-( Cool fish though!
On the way in I thought I saw a barracuda just under the surface...I got up on the bow and began looking for them. Pretty soon we came across a school of 20-30 fish! Definitely barracuda. It was killing Michelle that we couldn't stop to fish for them. She was heading out as soon as she dropped us off. There were from Estero point to within about 1/2 mile of the rock. I have a friend out looking now...so I should have a report soon. Exotics are always fun:-)
btw, the ocean was like a lake today!!!
best fishes,
steve

This is from Coastside

Guys – F&G Commissioner Sutton is scheduled for a confirmation hearing by the Senate Rules Committee this Friday, Sept. 4th. If you would like to voice your opinion NOW IS THE TIME to do so – only a couple of days.

Be aware that no matter what, his vote on the MLPA will stand. Of course he did not support our position, and we cannot expect him to be very sympathetic to our concerns in the future. So making our voices heard at this hearing is an opportunity to change the make up of the commission for future issues.

You can call the Rules Committee at 916 651-4151 and simply state that you oppose Mr. Sutton’s appointment to the Fish and Game Commission, or FAX at 916 455-0596.

You can make the same statement directly to Senator Steinberg’s office, the chair of the committee (and the deciding party regarding Senator Flores' on-going requests for a legislative over-site committee hearing) by calling his office directly at 916 651-4006 or FAX 916 323-2263.

If you want to add something concrete to your opposition besides his anti-fishing position, you can indicate that he has not followed the law in making his decisions, citing section 2859(b) of the MLPA which states “…the commission shall adopt a final master plan and a Marine Life Protection Program with regulations based on the plan and shall implement the program, to the extent funds are available.” Clearly funds are not available to support implementation of MPAs that cannot be enforced or monitored.

WEATHER/SST/CHLOROPHYLL

A lull in the wind this morning in our area but probably not for long still forecast to be ugly this labor day weekend. Might be coming down tuesday with wednesday looking good on the longer range forecasts.

Good SST from yesterday with encouraging shots. The hard break that was at the 1908 a few days ago is now above the donut with a plume into 35 miles. No good chlorophyll posted yet but I found one on coastwatch that indicated about .4 mg in that area which is clean enough for LFT.

Mel; Well written... When I first read it while breezzinn thru the report. I thought this letter was the outcome of the appointment... Seemed obvious..As usual the absolute madness of the MLPA process being SOOOO! bought and sold is a legal travisty. Im SPEACHLESS...Hard drinking. wild const. types like myself are generally not speachless!!! when I was younger... I Would have been indignent or even cussed...But the levity and importance of my demeaner corespondes to the seriousness of the task at hand...Thank you for keeping us informed...And Darby, dont you hate when the hunt'n & fish'n gets in the way of your hunt'n & fish'n...I love that...Dragon out...
