PANAMA SPORTFISHING WITH WORLD RENOWNED AND HOST OF MONSTER FISH DENNIS BRAID
I am very pleased to announce the dates of our first annual Panama Monster Fish Hunt. My first visit to Panama was in 1992 and I have been going back almost every year since. I consider it one of if not my most favorite places to visit and fish. The Punta Burica region offers opportunities to fish for record size Snappers, Roosterfish, Billfish and monster size Tuna. With easy runs to Lardrones or Montuosa and only 10 minutes to the Costa Rican border where there are no other boats. Because there is no boat pressure the popping and jigging can be spectacular for most inshore species.
Aqua adventures Hooked on Panama have been my lodge of choice for the past 3 years. Built on 60+ acres of beautiful rain forest with fresh water streams and manicured landscaping the beach in front only 15 minutes from the 500 fathom drop-off. Accommodations are 12 bungalows providing unsurpassed comfort when not in the beachfront pool, maybe sipping a cold one in the main lodge or battling a fish of a lifetime on one of the twin diesel full walk around game boats.
This trip is hosted by me and my wife to ensure each angler has the trip of a lifetime.
Scheduled dates for the trip are. April 16 – 23 2012
Itinerary;
Day 1: Arrive in Panama City, Tocumen International Airport. Our private transport service will greet you there and take you to your hotel
Day 2: Our transport service will pick you up at the hotel and take you to Allbrook Airport for your flight to David. At David, we will pick you up for transport to the Lodge. Once at the Lodge, unpack, then a short briefing about the resort. Rest of day spent at the lodge relaxing by the pool, cruising the beach or cocktails in the Bar. Dinner at 6:00 P.M.
Day 3-6 Wakeup call at 6A.M. Breakfast. Then off to the boats for an 8 hour fishing day 7:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Then relax time around the lodge and pool. Dinner at 6:00 P.M.
Day 7: Back to David for flight to Panama City. Upon arrival in Panama City, transport service to hotel in the City.
Day 8: Transport to Tocumen International Airport for the return trip home.
There will also be a tackle bag with all sorts of new stuff for all anglers.
• First and last night stays in Panama City.
• All transfers to and from airports and hotels in Panama City.
• Round trip airfares from Panama City to David.
• Transportation from David to the Lodge.
• Open Bar Included (All Inclusive Fishing Packages ONLY)
• 5 nights at the Lodge with all meals and nonalcoholic beverages.
• 4 full days fishing which includes the boat, crew, tackle, bait, ice and fuel. Lunches, soft drinks and water provided. Cold beer upon request.

March was tuna tuna everywhere - which is normal here. Marlin was not as good as usual - March being one of the best months but 8 groups caught 11 Marlin - with 3 of the groups not getting any. The afternoon tuna bite was good to strong just about everyday. Catching a lot of fish on spinning tackle with surface poppers and a lot of tuna over 150lb getting out in front and dropping back live Bonito. I am working now with a new owner - a lot of exciting things on the horizon here - more to follow - We now have complete WiFi coverage at Panama Big Game. Capt. Lee

February was all over the board here, fishing water conditions changing daily - not used to that here. Fishing was 50-50 between very good and slow. 4 groups caught 0 marlin and the other 4 groups caught a total of 18 - 12 Blacks and 6 Blues - with one group catching 12 of them. Sails where around in okay numbers - Dorado where not here as they usually are but the ones that where caught where large fish - also some large Cubera Snapper where caught (we release these) and had some good action with surface poppers on Mullet snapper. 4 tuna caught over 200lb and some smaller ones on poppers - but not the numbers we are used too. We had two groups fishing here from new countries - First was Per-Gunnar (great fisherman) and Marianne from Sweden- a great couple and allot of fun - and first group from Zambia-Safari Hunters - really great people - anyone looking to go on a real African hunt - I would contact them – had amazing stories to listen to - first day ever blue water fishing got a Black Marlin, Blue Marlin and a large sailfish - next day a double - 400lb Black and 500lb Blue – both released - so now they have some fishing stories to tell as well - Mike and Val - Wild Cat Safaris wildcat@zamtel.zm and John and Laura - Muchinga Adventures - www.muchingaadventures.com email johndp@zamnet.zm Capt. We managed to get straight through to London without a stop off in Miami so were pleased to see our 2 year old this morning. Thank you so very much for an outstanding 6 day fishing trip, it was amazing. Your team are a credit to you, food was fabulous and we take home not only life long memories but the photo's to prove not all fishermen lie about the big ones.... Getting blue marlin, black marlin and sailfish on day one was only beaten by having both 500lb blue and 400lb black marlin being brought in together on day two. Val's 220lb yellowfin tuna, all the snappers, needlefish and other fish were icing on the cake. We look forward to seeing you all soon and will send photos as soon as we get home. Well the 3 Musketeers, Mitch, Mike and Myself took off again, tired of the February cold. We overnighted in Panama City and then took a shuttle flight over to the city of David. From there an hour boat ride through a jungle river landed us at Boca Chica and the Panama Big Game Club. Run by Lee Campbell, the club has been operational for 10 years. It is perched on a steep hill overlooking the river and features very nicely appointed cabins (air conditioned, hot water, small refrigerators) and a great club house/dining room (TV, internet access, treetop monkey watching). The Panama Sport Fishing Lodge is right across the river.
Wake up is at 5 AM and after breakfast you are in the boat by 6 AM. The fleet consisted of a 30' Bertram and a 30' Phoenix, old but serviceable, and they both provided good sun shade when needed. At the camp we were joined by Mike and Bob, so there was 5 of us fishing 2 boats and we were being catered to by the entire camp staff! It was a 42 mile run to Montosa and we were always the first ones out there, soon joined by the center console boats from the Panama Sport fishing Lodge, Pesca Panama, and Isla Secas Resort. We trolled live baits and plastics for three days, catching marlin and tuna, and then on the fourth day we targeted roosters and snappers around Isla Secas 19 miles away. Since there are no rivers near Isla Secas, there is no runoff and the waters are truly magic blue in color, some of the best I've seen in 35 years of foreign travel.
Tally for the Trip- 2 Boats
Day 1- 350 lb Black Marlin, 30 lb. Cubera Snapper, 10 lb Rainbow Runner, 40 lb Yellowfin tuna
Day 2 - 250 lb Blue Marlin
Day 3- 150 lb Black Marlin, 50 lb Yellowfin Tuna, 500 lb Black Marlin
Day 4- Spanish Mackeral, 100 lb Yellowfin Tuna
Saturday we returned to Panama City, had a great steak dinner at Gaucho's, and returned to the US on Sunday. Everyone agreed it was a great experience and we can't wait to plan the next one, maybe Panama maybe Galapagos again. Want to join us?? Regards, Rich Adler

Breaking news - Panama has put in a ban for long line fishing - not included is the local boats - under 6 tons - can run a short long line but all larger long lines and boats are banned. Panama already has in a purse seining ban - (no mass netting of fish - saves Tuna mainly - only hook and line fishing for them) so is the most protective ban in all of the Americas.
January we had cold green water for about half of the month - which hurt the action. Water was from 78-80 and green. The rest of the month had 80-82 degree blue water and did quite well. It Really has turned here the last few days - 12 Marlin were caught - 7 Blacks and 5 Blues - with 4 over 500lbs in the last 4 days of January.
Also have some excellent video of a pod of Killer Whales swimming and playing around one of our boats - swimming underneath and planing off of the bow wake - hope to have that ready for next months report. They are very seldom here in this area - Captain last saw them in 2006 (cold water current also) and it has been 15 years since the Mate last saw them. Doing good on tuna - lots of 100lb + Yellowfin around and sails are here in greater numbers than they have been for some time. Dorado (dolphin) - which usually are here in great numbers are not but the ones we are catching are big fish - most over 30lb. Capt. Lee

Wanted to says "Thanks" for another great trip to Panama Big Game Club. My sons and nephew had a blast. I know the bill fish were a little picky, but I would rather cast topwater poppers to yellowfin anyday. The boys got 14 the first day all on topwater. 2 in the 15lb range, but 12 in the 40 to 50lb.. 2 cubera's but 50 and 55lb..along with some nice amderjack on the bottom, I had forgotten how strong they are.. Got 2 big yellowfin on live bait. one 180lb and the other 200lb. Both of those were my sons largest fish ever. Hey, the river fishing was fun. Nice snappers, sharks, hope you show the picture of the eel, maybe not the frigate bird, although its got quite a story for his grandkids. PBG, never ceases to amaze me, for the quality of variety..You have the best captains in the game there. Definately one of the top locations in the world for "Big Game." Will see you again very soon. We had two groups fishing here this September. Many large snapper caught - chucking up with sardines then free lining, surface poppers, live Bonito off of the bottom and vertical jigging - all proved successful. Many snapper over 20lb with four Cubera snapper around or over 60lb and a 42lb Mullet snapper (within a few pounds of the all tackle record) being the best ones caught. Also all the Cuberas where released. We also got 3 Black Marlin (all Anglers first timers) with two 500 pounders - on live Bonito (this with mainly fishing the snapper bite) - and had a few more up in the air - 10 to 50lb yellowfin - trolling and surface poppers, wahoo, dorado, blue jacks, Rooster fish, amber jacks rounding out the catch. Humpback whales spotted almost every day off shore - September proved again a great month to fish here - and with out hardly another boat in sight. Capt. Lee
Lee, I had a wonderful time during my visit to the Panama Big Game Fishing Club! Not only was the fishing great, but I was pleasantly surprised by the very comfortable accommodations, the great food and the attentive staff. I achieved my goal of catching my first Marlin (a 500 pounder!!!) and I'm told the 58 pound Cabrera Snapper was quite impressive by those who are more familiar with them than I. Over all we caught 10 different varieties of fish while enjoying the beautiful scenery, watching pods of Dolphins swim and Humpback Whales jump. What a special place. We had 5 groups (Anglers from all over the world – Canada,Uruguay, Brazil, Costa Rica, Lebanon and USA). They caught/released 11 Marlin - this is with just fishing 30% of the time for Marlin - most come here for the inshore action this time of year. Wahoo, Amberjack, Mullet snapper, Cubera snapper, smaller Yellowfin tuna on surface poppers rounded out the action. Also seeing Humpback whales almost every day - seeing a Mother Humpback breaching along side her calf is worth the price of admission. July, August and September are some of the best months to fish Panama - very good for Marlin - best for inshore - fish many days and not see another boat - that is a big plus for me. This also is the rainy season - but 90% of the time it rains late in the evening or at night and the seas are calm. We did have 3 bad weather days this month with slow fishing but the rest of the month was good with lots of action every day. Capt. Lee
Capt. Lee, I want to thank you for an incredible fishing vacation at the Panama Big Game Fishing Club. Having fished most of my life and in numerous destinations, I can honestly say that the fishing there tops them all. In four days of fishing we raised 7 Black Marlin and we released four to 600 pounds. Every member of our group was able to take on and catch one of these beautiful and powerful giants (3 were first timer marlins)!!! The diversity of fish and quantities were beyond belief. We were able to catch Wahoo to 40 lbs, Yellow fin Tuna to 30 lbs, monster Mullet Snapper, Cubera Snapper, and giant Amberjack. Each drop of the bait was filled with anticipation to see what giant would come up from those deep blue waters. The boats were comfortable with top of the line gear for all type of fishing we could desire. The captain and mate were attentive to our needs and ready to accommodate any request to catch the different species available. On land things were just as great. Accommodations were comfortable with spacious cabins and a great club house for our post fishing cocktails and meals. Being in the restaurant business, I can really appreciate the meals we enjoyed. Enjoying our fresh fish catch at dinner was spectacular and every meal was made with the best local ingredients. Everything was great, and we are so thankful. The fishing was amazing, and the crew extremely knowledgeable. As a summary we caught, Junior records for Barracuda Pacific 21lbs, and Mullet Snapper 29lbs. Then in Saltwater Line Class: Barracuda Pacific in the 30 lbs, 8lbs, and 6lbs test; and Mullet Snapper in the 30lbs test (the same fish for Junior). Owners Mike and wife Gay had some free time so they took some employees and their family fishing for the day.
Had to get some fish! They caught a 20 lb. mahi one baby mahi,and three 20lb + cuberas and 2 smaller dog snappers. Had a great time catching the snappers. They are fast and strong! It was a great day on the water. Looking forward to the next trip! This was a quick 4 hr trip and a lot of fun for the day. My things are not yet arrived. But anyway, as you see in this forum, there is not any one of real angler here in this forum. All you have here are advertisings from charters.
I heard that it is prohibited to shore-fish in Panama coz the waters are too much poluted. All I can do here is to charter a boat and go out to the deep sea for trolling or jigging. Must cost a lot of money. lol |

New England fishermen visit Panama
Last month has been very busy with some excellent inshore action. This has caused us to be behind on our fishing reports. The action has been very consistent at Hooked on Panama. Our guests have had the pleasure of hooking and catching some of the most spectacular fish in the world. A few of the varieties caught were 30 to 50 pound Cubera Snappers, 20 to 70 pound roosters and a wide variety of other beautiful species that can be caught off our coast. We had the pleasure of a group of experienced fishermen and boat captains from the New York and New England area of the USA. In this group was Mike Dannon , Joe Huckemeyer, Walter Scott, Joe Miller and Richard Specht from Florida. You can catch the action by enjoying the photos below. Fishing Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, Snapper with Panama Big Game Fishing Club March April 2010
We had 12 groups and caught 14 marlin - 11 blacks and 3 blues with one blue around 800lb - this is about half the average Marlin catch for this time of year and had some slow fishing with hot water around the middle of March - but was less than a week - and cleared right out. The good news was the bait balls moving through. March and April are the months for them but this year was by far the most we have seen. When they are close to structure the snapper come up and are really a lot of fun. Tuna are chasing them so strong the tuna run half way up the boat. We use a dip net to boat the bait. There is a YouTube clip sent in by Jean in the report and also we filmed here last week with Trevor Gowdy and have excellent underwater action - with a large Blue Marlin chasing a 100lb Tuna up right under a Kayak - Trev had the tuna hooked up at the time - plus a lot more action so am looking forward to that show. This year the two marlins, over 450lbs., many large Tuna over 100lb., three Bull Dorado's, and the Roosterfish Grande over 80 Lbs. as well as the smaller fish made for a exciting trip. Dear Lee, My son Garrett and I had such a great time on our fishing trip with Panama Big Game. The fishing could not have been better. The captain and the mate worked very hard to catch fish, and we caught a lot of fish. My largest was a yellow fin tuna at 150lbs and Garrett's was a yellow fin tuna at 250lbs. This was a trip we will never forget. Every part of our trip was great. The accommodations, the staff and the food were great. We enjoyed staying on a secluded island and listening to howler monkeys. Hey Lee, My dad and I had a awesome time last Friday at your place. You guys definitely went out of your way to take good care of us! The food was awesome and the beer was extra cold! I can't wait to come back in January or February to play tug-o-war with a marlin or 2. I'm going to build a 7' 6"' - 8' rod that can handle 80lb spectra (not easy to come by) with a Stella 20,000. My goal in the next 10 or so years of my life is to try to get a 100 - 200lb tuna on a popper! I'm sure that lots of chunking and chumming should be able to get them into casting distance when they are around. Even a 50lber would be great! The mate and captain that we fished with were top notch!!!! Looking forward to our next trip to Panama Big Game. Fishing Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin, Dorado, Snapper Feb 2010
We had 16 groups this Jan-Feb with 14 black Marlin and 3 blue marlin caught-about half what the average should be for this time period. Had good catches on 100lb plus yellow fin tuna (9 over 200lb), Cubera snapper, mullet snapper, rooster fish, sailfish and still good on Dorado (dolphin). Second week in Feb we had 88 degree water around for a week with two really slow days then it cleared right out. Usually when we get bad water here is stays for awhile so was glad to see that clear out so soon. Also did not see any effect from the Chilean Tsunami - either with waves or any change in the fishing so feel very lucky for that. It is the first week in March as I write this - we have excellent fishing with large schools of sardines moving through now - March and April is the time they move through. Snappers are up in the boil and can be caught by ripping jigs through the school and on top water - really fun to catch snapper like that. Also had Sally doing some bird watching on the Island - she photographed 89 different species of birds and she has spent some time bird watching here in Central America so when she stated that 18 of the 89 species where the first time she has photographed them I was impressed with that. We had 8 groups this month with 10 Black and 1 Blue marlin released. The big story was the almost daily double digit number of large Dorado (dolphin). This is the time of the year for them but have never seen so many 20lb plus fish here for such a long time. Also Mullet snapper has been very good - with allot of them caught on surface poppers. Cubera snapper and Rooster fish has been good - yellow fin tuna have been spotty but have caught some nice fish and they are starting to show up now. Sailfish has been good also with many fish caught over 100lb. Wahoo has been very disappointing - usually double digit per day this time of year but have only caught a few. Capt. Lee

My son and I had a great time fishing for three days at your lodge. The accommodations were great, food was good and the staff were very nice. We also enjoyed the other guest at the lodge. I will not forget the doctor sewing up his wife's head in the lodge as we sat around eating chips and drinking cold beverages??? As for the fishing, it is top notch. I have fished all over the world and there are not many places that you hook into two marlin and a salifish at once. We had six marlin on in one day and my son landed a 500lb black, wow. The "smaller" fish were great too. catching 30-40lb dorado and 40-50lb roosterfish will keep you busy and real tired at the end of the day. If I could change anything about our trip to biggamepanama is that I would have stayed longer. We will be back and yes for even a bigger marlin, they are out there. We have our own version of Big Foot now - Steve was walking with his camera out one morning to get some photos of the Monkeys and ran across a big black cat. Photo is very fuzzy but you can see by the tail that it is not a dog. With so many Howler Monkeys and all the other wild life here on Boca Brava Island it would not have to work hard for a meal.

"On a fishing trip to the Panama Big Game Fishing Lodge-this is back in the jungle with no roads, only river access. Like a 4-Star boy scout camp for adults. Got up early to explore the surroundings and soon found myself eyeball to eyeball with a very large black cat! He was about 30 meters away when he suddenly turned and slinked walked away down a narrow trail; luckily I had my camera and whipped it up and got a hurried shot! Back at the lodge the boys accused me of knocking back Jack Daniels for breakfast! But I had proof-the owner had never seen a jaguar on the Island before. Steve

Hi Everyone,
This is Dan from Panama with a fishing report and photos from this
last week. Needless to say, I don't understand why they call it the
off season. The offshore and inshore fishing was hot. Now, it might
rain some times, which it has only been doing at night, and the
cloud cover really helps with the tropical heat. I do believe
because of our location out on the tip of Punta Burica, we receive
about half the amount of rain they do almost everywhere else. Now
for the report. We had a crew here from Texas for the week of July
20th. 2 boats fishing for 3 days with Captain Oliver and mate Rafa
on the Miss Burica and Captain Victor and mate Matagato ( cat
killer ) on the La Chiricana.
3 Black Marlin hooked. One that broke the double line ( something
new for us ) was around 500lbs. The other was on for about 10
minutes before spitting the hook. The 3rd came up tail wrapped after
a hour long battle and after trying to revive her for another hour,
we had to bring her in. This fish measured out at 350lbs and was
caught by Kyra Hudson. Hated having to bring her back, but the
smoked marlin we prepared was delicious and the staff got to take
home a lot of fresh fish.
So many Dorado that we lost count. Most of them were in the 20 to
40lb. range. The weed lines off the tip of the Point were holding
tons of bait and the Dorados were there.
No big tunas, but tons of small ones with a few hitting 25lbs.
Margot, our head chef, makes an unbelievable seared Tuna with a
sesame seed glaze.
12 to 15 Roosters released with the largest one topping out at 68lbs.
Multiple Cubera Snappers. The largest one at 31lbs. We released all
but one of the Cuberas. Let me tell you, fresh snapper fillets on
the grill are awesome.
Multiple Pargo. Kept a couple for dinner. This is the only fish
Margot will use for her world famous Thai Fish Soup. Ask anyone who
has had it and you will understand why it is world famous.
Mullet Snappers and Blue Travally's. Blue Travally makes a wonderful
ceviche. How do you spell Travally?

there was just to much bait around and they were just not hungry.

 We had four groups fishing this month. Most days where spent fishing inshore but still we caught 6 Black Marlin. So still very good action with Marlin. Good action with Rooster fish, Cubera Snapper, Mullet Snapper, Sailfish - was not as good with Yellowfin tuna. Usually this time of year is the best for Yellowfin tuna - including the 200lb. fish. They where around but where spotty - not like they should be. Water quality is very good - so are the temps, so all looks good heading into May. Capt. Lee

Mark and i just wanted to say thanks for the wonderful time fishing and the company while we were at Panama Big Game Fishing. You guys were the best at everything..The food was spectacular and the fishing too. I don't know of anywhere else you can have a Rooster and 2 Black Marlins hooked by noon ( 3 if you count the bigger one that threw the hook). The crew was tireless in making sure we caught that elusive Rooster fish my husband was after and if it weren't for their knowledge, persistence and hard work I would have never landed my 1st bill fish, a 300# plus Black Marlin. I just cant say enough about your lodge and all the staff. You also were an absolute pleasure to meet. We cant wait to get back over and see y'all again. Tell all the guys Howdy from Texas and I miss y'alls sweet smiles, awesome food, fantastic fishing and the weather ain't bad either. How I enjoyed our trip! You made it more special with my cake & champagne. My friends drool when I tell them of our tuna sashimi, fresh fish, homemade breads, frozen rum drinks waiting for us after a long day of fighting the big boys. Had the last 2 pieces of banana bread toasted with butter Tuesday morning. Yum! We were able to upgrade to business class which was so nice. Had a sandwich at the restaurant in the airport & all the servers had on masks...I think the flu issue is a bit overboard. So, my friend...we are slowly getting back to the grind but with a smile on our faces. We have stairs & every time we go down them we think of heading down to the boat! Life is good! We had 15 groups fishing this Feb and March with 31 Marlin caught - 28 Blacks and 3 Blues. Only 3 groups did not catch at least 1 marlin and two had shots. So in both months only 1 group did not have at least a shot at a marlin. Tuna was also good - not what it usually is but still okay with 4 yellow fin caught over 200 lb but most fish between 20 and 100lb. Middle of February was a little slow with over all action but all groups caught at least 1 marlin. Snapper, rooster fish, amber jacks and sails finished out the catch. There is cold water south of us in Panama Bay and hot water just this side of the Costa Rica border so for the last 3 weeks the Marlin fishing around La Drones has been excellent. All conditions look very good here heading into April. Capt. Lee

Hats off to you and your staff at Panama Big Game Fishing Club. I must say that you run a first class operation from the moment we arrived in Panama City to the moment we left for home. he weather on our first day of fishing was kind of unseasonable, but we still managed to catch a sailfish and a black marlin. The next two days proved to be perfect conditions. I would say for 3 days fishing, taking a total of 3 Black Marlin, one estimated at over 500 lbs, 3 Sailfish, and numerous other snapper, etc. we had an excellent trip. I am planning our next trip in the very near future. We all decided that this needs to be an annual event. We had 8 groups fishing this month with a total of 20 marlin. Highlight was having the two brothers-Chuck and Mike- hooking and landing a double - blacks around 300lb each - Anglers and crew did a good job with that - then having Len (father) landing a 500lb+ black later that day. Sails where also here in good numbers with most fish over 100lb. Tuna where here in good numbers also - with fish up to 240lb. caught along with Snapper - both Mullet and Cubera (we release all Cubera). Rooster fish and Dorado where also in good numbers with allot of the action with poppers on spinning tackle. Capt. Lee

Dear Lee,
We had a fantastic time down there, and couldn’t have been more satisfied with the fishing and the accommodations. I am going to try and get some pictures out to you tonight. At some point, I will need to bring my younger son down there as well. Madison and I have decided that we should count the third Black Marlin we hooked on our last day in our tally, as it actually was on for a while. Because it came out of the water two or three times before throwing the hook, once being a pretty phenomenal dance, we actually got all of the most wonderful part of a marlin catch without most of the work! Madison Ps-We miss your cooking!
Captain Lee, We had such a great time and are missing all of you and the weather. It was 18 below zero when we returned. A really rude awakening. \pJanuary's Fishing report and Fleet addition
Hello to all:
First a little background.
Our "new" lodge, with it's beach front location sits less than two miles from "Blue water", the highway for all pelagic species found here in Panama. In the last two weeks we have had phenomenal catches reported by our guests and captains. As you all know most fish stories always start with "This is no s##t" ,but we have truly seen double digit sail fish days and Marlin landed daily. Our nightly meals have featured mouth watering fresh dorado and tuna. It just can't get much better as we enter of busy season.
New fleet additions:
W e have just finished putting together Two new boats to add to our growing fleet. Rex Hudson, our co owner and boat builder, has now added a second 35' deep sport to our sport fishing fleet. The "Miss Barica" gives us our third offshore boat. The boat was sea trialed just in time to take a group of fishermen put together by our friend and fellow fishing fanatic Frank Carbone of "Hawg Hunters".
Frank put together a great group of anglers as well as Fox television host Joe Rossi and his ace cameraman Greg Scala from Pennsylvania. Both Joe and Greg found fishing here to be even better than their wildest dreams. Double digit sails, Marlin, Dorado, Tuna and rosters all within the waters close to the lodge. I'd like to also add Joe Rossi is a heck of a chef! Nightly he would add mouth watering dishes to our tables. Our other guests also had great days on the water. John and Patricia Dinardo, Nat Tomlinson, Ed jackson, David Wellner, Gerald and clase Todd, Jeremy Koogler with their host Capt Frank Carbone I hope will all be back soon.
Our New fly fishing addition:
A bit about our new 23' "Unsinkable", Boston Whaler Fly fishing and light tackle boat. This 50 mph specialty boat will be added to our fleet of (3) 35' Deep water sport fishers and our 35' Black fin. We have a great fishery for rooster fish, Pargo and a varity of big snapper here close to the lodge. John Maynard, founder and Captain of Budweiser National Fishing Team20will be taking the helm. John has fished the waters of Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama for many years and specializes in Fly casting and light tackle fishing.

We had 4 groups fishing this December and got 8 marlin - 3 Blues and 5 Blacks - 1 of the blacks at 600lb+. The last group fishing - April and Kenny got 6 Marlin - fishing 3 days for them. We also had excellent Dorado (Dolphin) - most fish over 20 lb., mullet snapper, rooster fish - with both being caught on surface poppers, cubera snapper, wahoo - but still not the double digit per day catches we are used to this time of year, sails - with most over 100lb., spotty yellow fin but they will start any day now, amber jacks, blue jacks, sierra mackerel rounding things out. Water conditions along the 3000ft. drop off and the 600ft platform have been excellent - clean blue water and good surface temp. - 82 to 85 degrees. Capt. Lee
Hello Lee- I have fished many locations in the world buy none that I have felt so good at. The fishing was excellent, the attention from the Captain and Mate was the best and over all it was the prettiest area I have ever fished.  We had 4 groups fishing and got 3 black Marlin and 1 blue Marlin. Inshore fishing was very good with good numbers of Cubera snapper, Mullet snapper, rooster fish, sierra mackerel, jacks - with allot of the action on surface poppers. Wahoo was good - not like it should be this time of year - but a couple of them almost every day and we had large numbers of Dorado (dolphin) with most fish over 20lb. Spotty on Yellow fin tuna but caught 1 over 200lb - for this time of year having one that size is not common - but last two weeks have not had any yellowfin around. Capt. Lee

Fishing started off the first of August on the slow side - some tuna action offshore but picked up after that - both inshore and offshore. A little slow on wahoo - not the double digit per day numbers we are used to for this time of year and spotty with rooster but some real quality fish caught. Very good snapper - cubera, mullet, yellow, dorado, and with 3 - 200lbs. plus yellowfin tuna. Caught, blue jacks, 2 Black Marlin, 1 Blue Marlin (with 80% of the fishing inshore), sailfish, seirra mackerel, amberjack rounding things out. We release all billfish, Cubera snapper, Rooster fish and have just started releasing all female dorado. Capt. Lee
Hi Lee:
Thanks again for another great trip to Panama Big Game. My son, nephew, and I had a ball. We knew it was the off season, but the inshore fishing was fantastic. The 2 days we fished at the Secas, we caught 3 roosters to 50lb., and 22 dorado, but the smallest was 30lb, especially the 55lb bull my son caught on a topwater popper, plus a number of other types of jacks casting to the rocks. Out on Montosa we caught a nice wahoo, and 1 nice tuna, but it was in the afternoon when we would start dropping down baits that all hell would break loose. We caught a 50lb. cubera, the largest blue trevally I have ever seen. We then located a large school of mullet snapper, and started catching one after another. After a boat load of different types of snappers, and completely out of bait and totally exhausted, it was time to head back to the lodge. Panama Big Game Club never ceases to amaze me for its tremendous amout of variety and diversity of fishing. It was my fifth trip there and I guarantee not my last.  The end of April and May we had terrible water here - never have seen that in the 7 years we have been fishing in Panama. Usually the tuna fishing is all you want with good Marlin and great inshore action but had no action off shore and some action inshore. It cleared out the middle of June and July was good. We had large numbers of Dorado (dolphin), most over 20 lbs. or better that we usually do not have this time of year along with yellow fin tuna up to 200 lbs. The inshore with Rooster fish, Mullet snapper (allot of them on top water), cubera snapper, and blue Jacks was very good. With 4 groups fishing we only got 2 marlin - both Blacks-which is low. Normally in July, August and Sept. we average at least two marlin per group. Also we caught a few Wahoo but this time of year we should be catching double digit wahoo every day, if spending time to catch them. We are also seeing Humpback Whales almost every day out. Capt. Lee

I have already told a couple of my fishing friends what a great place to go to fish and relax Panama Big Game is. As you know from our original correspondence, my interest was primarily in fishing especially for the big ones. I can honestly say that I would go to Panama Big Game just for the wonderful food, people who work there, laundry service, solitude and relaxation in the beautiful villa. Twice a year would work just fine; once during the height of the marlin season and once when the club is not full. The 200 pound yellow fin tuna, 60 pound Wahoo, several mahi mahi 50-25 pounds, and three rooster fish fit my fishing menu quite well to say nothing of the gourmet preparation for dinner. Marlin fishing this month has been the best anyone has seen. Through Jan. 27th, with still 4 fishing days left -we fished 8 groups and have caught 30 marlin so far. Also a lot of large dolphin, mullet snapper, cubera snapper, sailfish and have caught 17 tuna over 100 lb. with the biggest at 240lb. We also had a lot of sharks here for two weeks. I am waiting to get a photo back from Trevor Gowdy - he was filming here and caught a 12 footer around 600lb. Most were around 150lb - captains called them Needle sharks - look a lot like a Mako but are brown - not blue. So am interested to get them identified. Never have caught them here before and last 5 days have not caught another one. Also had a big blow the first week - could not fish for two days but it laid right down after that. Capt. Lee, Here are a few pictures from our trip. It's too bad the color of Kirk's dorado isn't brighter. Or, it's too bad my brightly colored dorado isn't larger! Thanks again for a wonderful time. We really enjoyed the fishing, food, accommodations and crew. As you can see by the fourth picture, we even had fun when it was too windy to fish. How did the other two groups come out for their fishing totals? We had a great time in Panama City. Lee, We had the best time ever. The marlin fishing was the best we have ever had. 7 out of 11 in 4 days fishing is unreal especially considering their size . I sent a couple of pictures but I'm not too good with the camera and most of my fishing shoots are of splashes or tails . Everyone here is jealous and wants to come with us when we come back. As another week got underway, expectations were high. Jim Scarlata and John Holste were aboard to share their knowledge and expertise with an already knowledgeable group of men consisting of Jed & Brian Mitchell, Frank & Matthew Wicker, Richard Elgert, and George Belter. Fingers and toes crossed, as once more we go into the breach, and hoped to land the “Big One”.
The week turned out to be a superb week of Marlin fishing. All hooked up Marlin. Mother Nature also cooperated with fair winds and calm seas with just enough overcast and a few rain squalls to help keep the heat down a bit, which, was a good thing, considering how hard these fellows had to work.
Jim and John spent time showing a few tricks of the trade to guests and sport boat crews alike. It is always a pleaser to watch pros at work and I enjoy having these two aboard any time.
As a group, these men only landed 72 fish, but the combined weight was an even 8,000 pounds. Of the 72 fish, 19 were Blue Marlin, 2 Black Marlin, 23 Dorado, 11 Mullet Snapper, 2 Sailfish and 5 Cubera Snapper. The rest of the weeks catch consisted of Yellowfin Tuna, Rock Snapper, Yellow Snapper, Pacific Mackerel, Horse Eye Jacks and Jack Crevalle.
There were many more hookups on Marlin and still more that were raised into the spreads but did not take the bait. All in all, a great week of fishing, and some tired fishermen.

Marlin Showing Up! M/V Coral Star of Panama Fishing Report December 29-January 3
For this the second full trip of the season I got to ring in the New Year with a baker’s dozen of some of the best people anyone could ever care to start a new year with. They were Janet & Blaine Garrett, Sherry & Ronald Cady, Patricia & Mark Scott, Maureen & Thomas Baumler, John & Sean Barber, Robert VanGundy, James Mattox, and Rod Unger.
Over all it was a good week, but there were times that the North winds kicked up making it a bit uncomfortable. The fishing was good, but not great due to the lack of “Big Tuna”…still the group landed 124 fish with a combined weight of 6,402 pounds. The catch included 7 Black Marlin, 1 Blue Marlin, 53 Dorado, 14 Sailfish, and 15 Cubera Snapper. The rest of the catch was a smattering of usual Roosterfish, small Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Jacks, and Mullet Snapper.
Both Mark and Tom had a productive week of Fly Fishing landing both Dorado and Sailfish on flies.
Catch of the week went Mark Scott with his 550 pound Black Marlin, he also hauled in the top Wahoo at 45 pounds. Ronald Cady landed the only Blue Marlin at 450 pounds. The largest Dorado was taken by John Barber at 60 pounds and he also landed the biggest Roosterfish at 50 pounds. Largest Sailfish honors went Paticia Scott for 140 pound fish.
While I do not normally include fish not landed, I feel it noteworthy that in addition to the 8 Marlin landed; another 11 more were hooked up or raised with one hookup being on a fly.

Subject: M/V Coral Star December 15-20, 2007 Fish Report!
Our first guest arrived in David on the 8th and started his adventure doing day trips from our Coral Star Landing. Robert Stevens, an adventurous lad from Merry Old England. While his first week was a bit different than normal Bob did land 8 Roosterfish between 30 and 60 pounds and an equal number of small Dorado ranging from 12 to 20 pounds.
On the 15th Bob was joined by Jeff Stone, Alan Hermer and Gary Geisler for the first half day of fishing for the week.
Sunday the 16th and the first full day of fishing for the season started with light overcast and slightly choppy seas, with 7 to 10 kts of wind, water was blue and clear. Bob landed a 400 pound Black Marlin and caught, and quickly released, a 60 pound Shark. Gary hooked up two 15 pound Blue Jacks on poppers. On Star II with Captain Chaka, Jeff boated three 8 pound Dorado, while Alan also landed a couple of 8 pound Dorado and a 30 pound Mullet Snapper.
Monday 17th got off to a great start with clear skies, blue water, and no wind, in short a beautiful morning. Out with Captain Tito on Star VII, Gary boated 2 Wahoo at 20 and 30 pounds and Dorado at 25, 20 and 20 pounds. Bob pulled in a 20 pound Wahoo, Dorado at 20, 15, 15, pounds and one small Tuna at 12 pounds. Jeff did report Marlin coming up into their spreads, but no hook-ups.
Tuesday the 18th, a bit breeze with winds of 10 to 20 kts with some squalls in the area creating some choppy seas. On Star II with Capt. Chaka, Alan landed a 120 pound Sailfish and a 30 pound Dorado. Jeff boated two more Dorado at 30 pounds each. On Star VII with Capt. Tito, Gary pulled in 2 Wahoo at 20 and 30 pounds along with 3 Dorado at 15, 20 and 20 pounds. Bob hauled in 1 Wahoo at 20 pounds, 2 Dorado at 20 & 15 pounds, 1 Snapper at 15 pounds and a small 12 pound Yellowfin Tuna.
Wednesday the 19th light winds, overcast with squalls in the area. But the water was blue and clear. The boys decided to head for the Isla Secas today so I moved Coral Star. Jeff on Star II with Capt. Chaka boated a 45 pound Roosterfish. On Star VII with Capt. Tito, Gary hauled in a couple of nice Roosterfish at 70 and 30 pounds, and 2 Cubera Snapper at 20 pounds each. On the Coral Star, Basil Johnson pulled in a 45 pound Dorado.
Thursday the 20th started off as a good day with light winds and blue water and got better for Jeff and Allen with some fast and furious action with Capt. Chaka on Star II. Jeff boated 1 Wahoo at 35 pounds and 4 Dorado at 25 pounds each. Allen matched Jeff with 1 Wahoo at 35 pounds and 3 Dorado at 28-30 pounds each. On Star VII with Capt. Tito Bob landed 1 Wahoo at 35 pounds. All and all not a bad half day of fishing.
The group of four landed 57 fish with a combined weight of 2,001.0 pounds.

I was lucky enough to spend four days on the water at Panama Big Game this September taking pictures for New Jersey boys Ron Torkas and Joe Ozalas. Wahoo to 50 lbs. were everywhere. I lost count early on. Small yellow fin tuna were hitting on top water—exciting action! Lots of small dorado, yellow snapper, blue jack, bonito, and rainbow runners kept the boys busy with too many jack and houndfish to keep track of. Oh yeah, we ran into a couple of Marlin too.
We fished four full days with Captain Tati and mate Eddie in a 31' Bertram. Most of the time we fished near pinnacles in the area of Montuosa but also visited Islas Secas for roosterfish and Los Ladrones for snapper. Poor Ron and Joe hardly had time to fish for Marlin with all the wahoo action. "No more wahoo!" was the final decision. This cleared the decks for serious marlin battles. Early on day three, we arrived at Montuosa, quickly landed five bonito for bait and dropped them over with a couple of live blue runners for variety. Joe hooked up with a marlin almost immediately, fought for about 45 minutes and released a black weighing in the 350 lbs. neighborhood. We had barely recovered when Ron hooked another black. After about a half hour fighting the marlin in the pouring rain, Ron released his black, also running about 350 lbs. We spent the rest of the day bottom bumping for huge snapper and casting surface plugs for tuna. Not bad for the off-season. Check out the picture of Ron with his Rooster.
We usually arrived back at the lodge by 5:30 or 6:00, showered and spent the rest of the evening gorging on Lee's sushi, ceviche, home cooking, drinking rum and telling lies. Great fun! The rooms are large, air conditioned, with king-size beds and the showers have plenty of hot water. The mini-bars are kept chock full of beer and cokes (no extra charge).
I don't know why anyone would call August/September the "off" season. It rained on us once during the day, the weather was reasonably cool, and there was no one else fishing anywhere in the area. The seas boiled with life. We probably could have nailed more marlin but the boys wanted to taste everything the area had to offer. Bruce Morris

Again July and August are two of the best months to fish here. We only had 2 groups this year though. Always a pleasure to have Howard Chong with us - fished 3 days in July - his fifth time here. Had a very good day inshore with wahoo, jacks, sierra mackerel, cubera snapper and rooster fish - action all day. Next two days fishing offshore the highlight was a black marlin each day with nice catches of wahoo, yellow fin tuna caught on spinning with surface poppers, and dolphin. Next group was the Everett family-always enjoy family groups the best. It was their first time here - from England but came to us by way of Chub Cay- Bahamas. They are avid fisherman all and mostly fly fish for bone fish and tarpon-probably one of the hardest things to do in Sport Fishing. Had pretty good luck, corvina, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dolphin and the highlight a nice blue marlin that took both baits of Father and Son so both fought it to the boat and released him in very good shape - not a legal IGFA release because of the double hook up but allot of fun just the same.
Off Season Marlin - last 8 groups (including last week in April). Below all released alive - with all live bait we only use circle hooks. Love party-2 blue marlin ~ McDonald party-2 black Marlin-1 800lb. ~ Dempsey party--no marlin ~ Charles Party-1 black marlin ~ Asherl, Perez, Sinclair party-1 black marlin ~ Olivera, Hunter, Amador party-no marlin but hooked a big black on a surface popper inside of 20ft. from the boat and when hooked came clear out of the water and jumped 4 more times (luckily away from the boat) then the popper pulled out ~.Chong party-2 black marlin ~ Everett party- 1 blue marlin ~ Captain Lee Campbell
July, 2007 – Here I am back in the water taxi from Pedregal Marina to Isla Boca Brava, home of the Panama Big Game Fishing Club. This will be my fifth time there and during the one hour boat ride out to the island I anticipate seeing the head honcho and my buddy, Capt. Lee Campbell and the crew that makes up this outfit. I can taste the first Pina Colada already. I had just finished three days of fishing in Costa Rica so I decided to stay in shore on the first day hooking up on Sierra, jacks and roosters. This is an easy boat ride working the small island groups and bottom structures around Boca Brava in calm seas. The action was good on light tackle. The next two days were reserved for my favorite area Montuosa Island and the nearby Hannibal Bank. This is a 2 hour trip out with the ever present possibility of a few rain squalls this time of year. I was not to be disappointed. The big Dorado and big tuna are not around this time of year although I caught enough for the table and some sashimi for appetizers. The Wahoo were on the small side, about 20 – 25#, but, in abundance (4 on board in 15 minutes) with a total of 7 until I decided to quit. Now – the reason I go there – Marlin. I picked up one each of the two days out there in the 350# class on live bait. No backing down on these babies for me. Panama Fishing Report by Captain Mike Love
One of the translations for the word Panama is variety. Whoever originated this translation must certainly have been a fisherman. After broad experiences in Central and South America, it must be said that for variety, Panama ranks among the best that the hemisphere has to offer. This was my third trip to the Panama Big Game Fishing Club, and sixth overall to the country. Club owners Bill Beck, and Lee Campbell are both ex-charter boat captains, and this is reflected in their operation of the club.
Captain Campbell manages the club on site and handles the in-country arrangements. After a four-hour flight from Houston, we were greeted by representatives from starlite travel and escorted to the airport's VIP lounge. While the agents took care of our luggage and passports, cocktails were served. A waiting van took us to our first night accommodations, the new five-star hotel Veneto in downtown Panama City. The city is clean, modern and sophisticated. Exploring the restaurant scene is an adventure for the palate.
Early the next morning our van took us to the local airport for our 6:00 am departure to David, the second largest city in Panama. A short 10 min. drive to the marina had us in a small transfer boat for about a one hour scenic river cruise to Boca Brava, the home of Panama Big Game Fishing Club. Capt. Lee was waiting on the dock when we arrived. I knew the routine, so we wore our fishing clothes on the flight into David. A 36 ft. Palm Beach had her engines running at the dock when we got there. While the staff carried our gear to our rooms, we stepped right onto the boat and took off to fish around 9:00 am.
Our destination was Montosa Island, about 40 miles from the club. There were reports of schooling yellow fin tuna in the area. After 30 minutes of fishing, we heard a radio call about a big school of tuna on the other side of the island. Our captain, Tatti, told me the voice from the other boat's radio belonged to his cousin. . It also turned out our mate, Virgel, was the son of a captain I had fished with many years ago at the famous Club Pacífico, on Coiba Island. From my visits to this part of Panama over the years I've found that most of these excellent native fishermen are related. The sons follow in the footsteps of their fathers.
Moving quickly to the new location, we found the sea alive with surface busting baitfish and diving birds. Speeding directly to the school's perimeter, I cast a large popping plug into the action and began a rapid retrieve. The lure only moved about 3 feet before the strike occurred. This was a 30lb. yellow fin tuna, which provided great action on top water with a spinning rod. The reels are loaded with 65lb.braided line. Capt. Lee had just respooled with 65 because of breaking off some fish the week before. We spent the rest of the afternoon casting to schools of 30 to 40 lb yellow fin. The fish would stay on top for only a few minutes before they had to re-group and ball the bait again. Later that day, I found out why Capt. Lee had added the heavier fishing line. Another cast into a feeding frenzy brought an explosion of a strike. It was a much larger tuna that took the line screaming off the reel. Forty-five minutes later we finally saw the flash of the fish as it began circling on its side. We timed it so as it circled toward the boat I lifted the fish toward the surface, and two gaffs found their mark. A 125 lb. yellow fin was slapped on the deck. Cheers and high fives were all around. During the next day we did more of the same. What great sport on top-water casting outfits! Some of the other boats were also live-baiting small bonito, to catch larger tuna over 250lbs. On day three it was all sun and the yellow fin surfaced much less. So we fished much closer to Montosa catching some Wahoo to 40lbs., and big jack crevalle to 30lbs. We even dropped down some cut bait for some barred snapper to about 10lbs.
Our last day's fishing took us south to another group of islands. There were big schools of bonito, and we had no trouble with all the bait we wanted. We even caught two dogtooth tuna mixed in with the bait. Trolling around the islands, we caught more Wahoo and jack crevalle, and then headed out to large under water pinnacle. We dropped down live baits and immediately hooked up with a 50 lb. Amberjack. We lost a large broomtail grouper and had an enormous cuberra snapper come off at the boat.
We wanted to try some casting inshore, and headed back into islands' shallows. This is my favorite type of fishing locally. The islands are beautiful and the waves break on the rocky shoreline sending white foam spray 20 ft. into the air. I caught a big blue trevalle on a top water plug. Panama is the only place where I have encountered this amazing species of jack. While casting, we also free-lined a dead ballyhoo. Moments after boating the trevalle the free line went off. Fifteen minutes later an 80lb. Roosterfish was photographed and released. The rest of the afternoon we tried trolling ballyhoo. The sailfish weren't home but we did manage three bull dolphins in the 40 lb. range.
Back at the Club we all shared our weeks full of stories over cocktails and tuna sushi. Capt. Lee was also a chef earlier in his career and brought out a finale dinner of local beef and all the types of fish we had caught that week prepared in different ways. That's a glimpse of fishing Panama style. On two previous trips to Panama Big Game, we caught hot marlin bites, averaging 6 to 8 marlin strikes per day. At other times we found huge logs floating offshore, which were loaded with dolphin. There were so many dolphins that we would only catch the 30 to 40 pounders and then move on to the next floating hotel.
The hand made cottages that house the sleeping rooms are extremely nice. They line the stairway, which meanders up the hillside to the main dining room and lounge. The accommodations belie the Club's remote location. So if you are interested in one of the most interesting places available for variety big game fishing, then consider the Panama Big Game Fishing Club. It is run by professional fishermen and is staffed by some of the friendliest people imaginable. It's the place to be. El Capitan

Tuna fishing with surface poppers was all you wanted but smaller fish running from 10 to 80 lb. The first week in May we got some tuna over 100 lbs. and a few over 200 lbs. Black Marlin still good with 4 out of 5 groups catching a black. Fair wahoo action but they will pick up with August being the first real strong month for them. Had a few sails and some smaller dorado (dolphin) also. Inshore action was very good with snapper, rooster fish, serra mackerel, blue jack and amber jack in good numbers. Capt. Lee Campbell
There is something about tracking fish by sight that activates the adrenalin flow like nothing else. We had hot and cold moments on the trip but the image of two and three hundred pound yellow fin tuna hurling themselves airborne, intent on murder or adultery upon anything in their path…baby it’s just too much. Man and boy I’ve fished those things on both the Atlantic and Pacific but the supreme numbers of big fish right in front of your beak made this a very special opportunity, what most would call a “once in a life time.” Standing on the bow of the boat and throwing them top water plugs was really sweet, as well as productive. We jumped on a red hot marlin bite one morning with a double hook up and hooked a third immediately afterwards. It’s fair to say we had some slow times but even the inshore fish were real trophies. This included a seventy-pound amber jack, eighty-pound roosterfish and a wondrous blue trevalle. These fish get big down in Panama, bigger than in Costa Rica, bigger than in Guatemala. Panama Big Game Sport Fishing Report April 2007
We had very good inshore fishing all month, rooster fish, cubera snapper, mullet snapper, amber jack, broom tail grouper, blue jack, wahoo. The off shore was a little slow the first of the month but yellow fin tuna and marlin came on strong. Allot of yellow fin tuna over 200 lb. with 5 yellow fin between 125lb. and 250lb. caught on surface poppers with spinning tackle. Black Marlin-1 at 800lb. and Blue Marlin- with 4 in one day- came on strong the last half of the month. We have blue marlin, black marlin and yellow fin tuna over 200lb. - caught on spinning tackle including the strike-on film. Trevor Gowdy was filming here the last week-targeting large yellow fin on spinning tackle and marlin - and also had a pretty good day fishing the river just a short distance from our Resort with the highlight a 45 lb. Corvina. As usual April was one of the best fishing months - start of wahoo, strong Black and Blue Marlin with yellow fin tuna being the highlight - always the best month for yellow fin over 200lb. I want to thank both you and your staff for a wonderful fishing trip. You operate a first class lodge. Everything was great from the time I stepped off the plane in Panama City and met by your representative, to the time I stepped back on the plane at the end of the week. The food was excellent, even though there was too much to eat. The open bar was a pleasant treat. It was all the little details that you and your staff pay attention too that made the trip so enjoyable. I would also like to compliment you on your selective harvest program that you encourage to your guests as well as your staff. I've always been in favor of keeping a couple of fish to bring home to eat, and releasing the rest so that they can be caught again in the future either by me or a guest. Enclosed are some pictures of only some of the fish I caught. I look forward to coming down and fishing again next year. I hope that my brother will be able to join me.

We started off with a group coming to us from Germany: blue marlin, black marlin, sailfish, yellow fin tuna, 1 over 250 lbs., cuberra snapper, rock snapper, yellow snapper, mullet snapper, wahoo, amber jack and dorado - was about as good as it can get. The next group only had 1 full day off shore and got 2 large yellow fin tunas, 1 over 100 lbs. and 1 over 200 lbs. The last week was a little slow - in shore okay but finished up with double digit both in numbers and weight of dorado - very rare for March and a black marlin around 700 lbs. The water temp and quality has been good all Month and is looking good heading into April - which is always one of the best months to fish here. Otze and Troy both caught their first Black Marlin here this month - for Otze it was the last bill fish he needed-around 400 lbs.- to have them all - Congratulations!!! Troy it was one of the bigger Marlins he has caught - around 700lbs.- and after 47 blues lifetime he was due for a black -Congratulations!!
Hello Lee, Jorge, Totschy, Otze and I are back in Germany after a 32 hour-trip. At last we had a problem with the suitcase of Totschy, because it got lost. Very annoying is that his camera was in the suitcase with a lot of nice photos. We hope that the suitcase will be located and send back to Totschys home address. We all thank you for the first class service we enjoyed, the very-very-very good food and the excellent drinks and the great fishing. It was wonderful ! I never caught so many big-game fishes before and the 250 pound yellow fin tuna on last Friday was a fantastic closing. Enclosed for today now some photos of the yellow fin tuna I caught. The other photos of our fishing trip - the blue and the black marlin and especially of the "nice hair" in the fighting chair I'll send you with my next mail. Panama Big Game Sport Fishing Report February 2007
The first three weeks were not as strong as January, water temperature was up to 87 but we got plenty of sailfish, mullet snapper, cubera snapper, dorado and 4 out of 5 groups got marlins. 5 blacks total but had to work hard for all. The last week really got going with the water temperature back to 84. Yellow fin tuna were in with a lot of smaller fish but got two over 200 lbs. Sailfish still good and the last group added 1 blue marlin plus concentrated on catching inshore for 2 days and had good catches of mullet snapper, cubera snapper, all kind of jacks and double digit sierra mackerel. So all looks good heading into March. - Captain Lee Campbell

Beware of Cebaco Bay. Three of us where scheduled to stay on the mother ship Cebaco bay, and fish with a Captain I have known from fishing in Costa Rica. The Charter boat we where on was good, we caught a large variety of fish. But the mother ship, which the charter buisness set us up with was the worst I have ever seen. The mother ship Cebaco Bay is located in a remote part of Panama. You can reach the Mother ship either by flying into Coiba Island, and taking a one and a half hour boat ride, which we did. Or you can take a four hour cab ride, and then another 4 hour boat ride. once you are there, you can't go any place else. The three of us where put in a 6x9 foot room
with two bunk beds. The air conditioner broke down, and we where down in the bowels of the ship. our room was next to the engine room, and you could hear the generator running all night. Not bad for 300 bucks a night. meanwhile the owner of the boat had about 10 family members staying on the boat, taking all the above deck rooms, where the ac was working just fine. The owner never even acknoledged that the ac was broken, although he had deck hands running around checking the air vents for most of a day. Never again will I leave myself in a position like that.
Four days on that boat, and we where never happier then to get off of it. |

Marlin Magazine Article - Panama Big Game Fishing Club
A fair share of operations have since come and gone in this area, but few can compare with the Panama Big Game Fishing Club, the newest lodge. Just an hour by water taxi from the town of David, the lodge was built atop the highest elevation on Isla Boca Brava in 2001, offering a commanding view of the surrounding area. Just to let you all know i finally put up a web site at "www.panamafishingandcatching.com"!The fishing has been great in the Gulf of Panama with some spectacular catching of big cubera and broomtail grouper near San jose island. Further offshore yellowfisn tuna from 30-200 pounds are on the prowl in great schools. Black marlin, sailfish and dorado are also moving in as the water in the gulf warms. Inshore the tarpon & snook have been hot on the Bayano river. Notable catches include a 42 pound snook two weeks ago and two of 26 & 22 just 3 days ago. small to medium sized tarpon (30-120lbs)have been active since early December but more recently the 'big boys' have been making stellar appearances up the river. this week we released 3 over the magic 150 mark and lost some bigger ones! Out at lake gatun the peacock bass are mostly hiting red & white poppers or surface spinner baits. An average day on the lake will net you 30-40 bass from 2-4 pounds with one or two over 5-6 pounds.
