I've caught them as close as 8 miles. I left late one morning due to trailer problems and ran accross jumpers within site of the rock. Threw a plastic on them and it was on.

My take on how long to drag the jigs after a hook-up depends on if I have live bait and how willing the fish are to come to the boat. With live bait and suicidal fish I'll cut the engines and start chuming ASAP.

We have caught them at 16 , a long time ago ,
Our cut on the leaving the jigs in for how long , we always do the old 10 count , two inboard rods with rubber bands flatlined , to, on outriggers , and the old faithful wood no paint cedar, in the center WAY BACK
If I only had one lure it would be the cedar plain plug ,
my two cents
Now if the weather will cooperate sun will get them.
gOOD JOB john GETTING THEM FISH.

Tried to deliver fish today, but hit the beach a little to early for the bite. Will try again on Thur and Fri.

"one more thing, we metered fish up to 22 miles from morro bay on the way in"

HA! ..that may win me a few bucks ... more than one bet on the fish would be inside 40 miles by end of week!

And inside 30 miles before season is over.

Looking back at old sat pics from 5 and 6 years ago ... these last few shots look very very similar.

dragon. to add to your tip on leaving the boat in gear, last week we found that when then outback jigs got bit the tuna did not run up the lines to the wash jigs. we had to drop these back while first fish was skipping to get bit. when the wash jigs were bit first the other rods usaully followed.a mirror diving jig just back of the wash was the high liner for us. we tried changing out one color from the pattern at a time and never got bit.

For the past 10 years all I have used for albacore trolling are jet heads/sevestrand tuna clones on the outside at 20-25 yards, plainwrap cedar plugs on the 40 yard line in the wake,,and a purple cd-18 rapala on a flatline clip right in the propwash.....For some reason the short line rapala diver usually gets bit first followed by the cedars...I can't wait until they are close enough to get safely out and back on my measly 80 gallon Bayliner fuel tank...Pray for a long/late season......jeff

One Last TIP... Leave the boat in gear and give the fish time to get on the jigs... Yah they'll skip on top... And if your short handed w/crew... Leave a fish on to keep them close while you clear the lines, thats also a good time to chunk that bait that rolled in the tank that you already have cut up. Its all about being ready...GOOD LUCK..BE SAFE...Hasta

Allright , thank you for the clarification , I think you have convinced JIM G and I that SUN would be a better day , BUT like you say that could change .
Joe R was at our picnic today and he was giving me a blow by blow of the FIESTAS report , and he did say it was an ass kicker out there ,no place for us private boaters ,just hope it lays down so all of us can get out there .Thank you for all your input it is greatly appreciated.

NOW THIS IS A FISHIN BOARD!!! Im SOOO confused...RED LINE ? GREEN LINE?...What to do???
B.A. Stella Maris your right on...If they come up foaming you can catch them on a hook only... I also agree you can catch them on 40# or at times you'll need 12# to even get a hit... But my 2 cents... Is as follows...black /purple...black /purple/green...
in low low light...Mexican flag zucinni bright colors in sun...jet heads have been a staple forever same colors apply...I remember when on the boats pink was everywhere...SD...I like green or grey... If you dont have bait, troll or the do the mega baits, or big hammer (channel island chovy) on the slide... OH!! dont forget the small purple tiger rapalas...Ive never given the cedar plugs enough time to really know... But we have all seen them work...Back to the point. My confusion!!! That is, do I take my rig or jump on a local charter... Im thinkin Both!! 10-20 mi tuna would be insane. This is the time when you JUST GO !!! Dont wait for the weekend... I gotta go, I've got to change the leaders on my feathers... And call my son and any one else who wants to go...Tight Lines>>> hope to see ya OUT THERE!!! YES!!!

B A Stewart , when you mention the late Bob Small it brings to mind a gent i met years ago on an albacore trip , i remember Dennis Peck was the captain and i think it was on the Princess , Dennis had us on the fish and i was hooked up next to this old gent , he was in his 80's then , he hooked and brought in his 1st fish of the morning , smiled at me and went in and had a beer , after awhile we were hooked up again and next to each other and i lost my fish , he looked at me and cut his line and said i think ill go have a beer , i was amazed , well the whole day went on like that ,every other fish he hooked he just decided he wanted a beer and cut his line , it was my best day ever ,i think i got 9 fish all about 30 lbs and lost just as many , finally i asked him why he was always cutting his line and i remember his words , Son ive caught my fair share of fish and probably a few more and at my age a beer just sounds good now ,ya know the ocean is a beautiful place to be , just enjoy being out here and if ya catch a fish feel blessed , i dont think he landed another fish that day , i feel blessed meeting a man like him and hope he is still with us today , i wish i could meet him again but his memory lives on in me

Mike:
John's (PG&E) forecasts are for Diablo + about a mile. Sometimes his general narrative will give you an idea of what is on the outside but not like wind and waves at the donut. When I talked to John Rowley today he said you would not want to be out there in a small boat today. The latest NWS narrative says 10-20 sat with 5-7 ft swell which could be sloppy if the wind does not back off before sat. Sunday is still looking good. Will have a better idea tomorrow when the forecasts are updated. Will post.

Jetheads.
The late great Bob Small (boats"yellow dog II" and "Blue shark") used to laugh at our expensive Jetheads(they were about $3.99 rigged back in the
90s.
He would often put a metal washer on the leader sliding down on to the head of his ancient well worn lure and it would make the bubble trail huge (and the line pull harder) he commercial fished rockfish & albies in 17.5-20foot boats with hand line and 2 beat up Savon poles, penn reels and was seldom outfished by anyone close in size. I think he even put in a few bluefin that way. he never wasted much money on fancy tackle. he also often towed a 20ft skipjack with a toyota celica, that was a sight.

Red light filters out at around 33 meters (or 100'). that is why most deep water fish are orange/red...they look grey/black at depth:-)

Weather and red line;

Don't like the NWS latest weather narrative for friday or saturday so will wait for tomorrow's update and computer models.

Red does lose it's color first the deeper it goes with blue last and uv the brightest at depth. I have used the red line a lot for salmon and rockfish and the fish did not seem to care. I know that fish are "line shy" some times but not sure why, color or action ? Trolling does not seem to matter.

Hugh,I had an old book called scientific angler put out by Berkley that said red is the first color to vanish as you get deeper, but wavelength is filtered out, it doesent get invisible, it just turns/shifts color.
Blues and greens are the last wavelengths visible. lacking outside light it all turns to blue and black down deep.
White reflects full spectrum and each part goes away. Even clears and florocarbons are not invisible.
Clear and related leaders seem to be less offensive but mainline color is normally meanignless to fish above first few feet of leader. spectra is highly visible.

use clear or lightly tinted mono or florocarbon leader, the lighter tests for line shy fish .
on troll fish you could use tuna cord, 500#mono gray lead torpedo sinkers with hooks in them.
on bait fish , it depends on how hungry and agressive the fish, some days they bite 50 some days 12. Near the surface ,where there is light ,an eye that can see color will see the color change as it get closer.

In short, I probably wouldnt use the blood red line for baitfishing tuna unless there was a good length of other line at the hook end.
as far as tuna trolling , dont think it would matter. trout on the top are another story IMHO.

Rob Bishop, I'm not sure about red line being invisible to fish underwater. The only thing that I know that's invisible to fish is my bait. Other than that there is a book regarding the subject that is o.k. called, WHAT FISH SEE, it's author is Colin J. Kageyama an optometrist. Fish On, Jeff

my understanding is that red is one of the first to lose its color. i dont know if losing its color makes it turn invisible or turns black but i have used pink ande line with great results. this may be(tell me if i'm wrong)why they say bright lures on bright days and dark lures on dark days. reds and yellows need sunlight to be a color but the purple retains color with less sunlight. maybe one of our boards marine biologist can add to this. harrell, i got friday and sat open but can only fish one day. whats the weather say? i also got a call from a guy named mark that got my number from you. had a nice conversation and he seems to be doing everything right but just missed the fish by getting there late and leaving too early. his boat is a bit smaller and with the fish coming closer i think he will do fine.

Jeff, Don't know for sure if we are going to go but I think the boat is full. Weather permitting. If the fish get a little closer, Scott and I will be taking both boats perhaps. Range is still a little far for me at 50+ miles unless we bring extra fuel which I really don't like to do. Plus much more $ to run my boat than Scott's. At least a $200 bill for a 50 mile trip with bait, fuel, oil, diesel, etc.

I agree with Darby, Albies have a poor survival rate and it's practically nill for troll caught fish. What works for me is to stop fishing when I have what I can actually use which includes taking care of my family and friends.

WEATHER;
The wind is up now and forecast to come down friday night with saturday/sunday looking good right now.

Should be good SST/chlorophyll today as the sky cover is gone early enough for chloro shots.

Small problem at port this weekend for the bigger boats as the tide is 0-1 ft at 4-5am. Maybe Marty/Dell will launch us at three if we have 4-5 boats ready and waiting ?

The Cavenaugh brothers are STICKS!! Always love seeing the Pac Queen in Morro. Hell, even when I had my boat I still would jump on with Bill or Pat for a boat ride. Great way for those that are fairly new at offshore to get their feet wet, and learn a ton in short amount of time.

Keep us informed Darby ..great addition to your fleet if they go off like in the past.

Just talked to a couple of the commercial guys who did pretty well near the donut, 50 and 60 fish scores. 15 -20 lbs with some 30's mixed in. Hit the jigs well, came to the boat really well and chewed the bait. School were meaty too, not just a few fish.

I have been hearing stories already of releasing fish. DON'T DO THIS!! The mortality rate is HUGE. The fish overheat, especially during a battle on 30lb line and die anyway. Even the tagging program that hooks them on 250 string, bounces them to the boat, tags and releases kill most their fish. It's fairly well documented. This is why so few albacore are able to be kept alive for the Montery aquarium. (Though she'd never admit it, Julia packard kills fish too.) You can always get a commercial license and sell them for fuel. They're dead anyway. If not give them away or bring them by whole and I will for you.

Steve,
Sorry about the fishing last Saturday, Trevor said the fish weren't jumping into the boat. Was told you were heading to Baja soon, hopefully I can make a trip when your heading that way before the end of the year, I hate to keep hearing about all the fish being caught and having to work. Hopefully Albacore this coming weekend if they keep the plant shut down.

After my crew didn't show on a trip to SD on friday, I jumped at the chance to go with Skip
for tuna on sunday. We got out near the numbers posted and droppped the lines. Water temp was 64.
Within 30 minutes we had 5 lines hooked up. After
that is was slow for about a hour. We decided to check out a little more inside and it was wfo. We could not get our lines out before we were hit again.Wound up with 23 albies from 8-20#
Not bad for only two guys. We caught some as close as 42 miles. All fish caught on feathers. Swim baits did not seem to work. Deke had no bait.Still great day!!!!

Realize that the long awaited LFT news trumps all. Go get 'em guys.

FWIW, fished ventura pier 1.5 hrs+/1.5hrs- flood tide today for no perch. Tried bloody & motor oil sand worms, grubs, all for nada. But hey, no one else got any either so don't feel so bad. Next time heading further north. Gaviota or maybe even Lompoc where it's always good.
