Will do, Steve. Gotta burn some fuel for a good calibration on the new FloScan. We'll be trying for a flatty or two as well.

My intention has been, and still is, to run from PSL on Saturday. Gonna run in the a.m. for a local shakedown run as well.

Hail "Tree Doc" on 68.

For mal de mar/seasickness.........get a RX for Scopace. It absolutely works even after the fact without the drowziness of older type meds. We tried the relief band and had mixed results but I've had Scopace work on at least a dozen individuals. Now my guys ask for "Shelly's pills" (it is my wifes prescription) and they're good to go. Not expensive.....worth the small hassle of getting a DR. to prescribe.

WEATHER

Saturday and monday are now the two best days with both around 10 kts all day and swell in the five ft range. Tomorrow will be coming down to 5kts by noon but back up to 10+ by 5pm. Swell will still be up but coming down all day so probably pretty narly all day friday. Sunday is 15+ all day

Steve/Tim don't think the gauge on the CSM is right. I checked the satellite wind sensor and it was NW at the same time the CSM said SW. all the other buoys up and down the coast were nw also.

Saturday looks good enough for me for a tuna run. I expect the bite to be a little closer than last week based on the current trend. I hear the baits are large sardine in Morro Bay today but that could change by Saturday.

Sea Sick Kids
My son is 6 and when he was 3-5 he used to love going on my old boat fishing for blues, and rock cod,,, I got a new boat and took him 1 day to purisma earlier this year on a semi rough day, he didn’t get sick but told me he didn’t feel good… he doesn’t like to go as much anymore... i am sad about that, he used to beg to go each trip and now I have to ask him to go, he still does go but I pick his day wisely I will have to try the sea sick band, Good old “Teachers Pet“, still teaching, i was a student about 10 years ago in high school we slammed many cod , salmon and albacore , he would always teach us after class how to properly rig up our baits and tie setups, and the basics that re so important awesome... :-) Glad to see you still teaching. I have a new boat we should go out one day soon..
Anyway going out Saturday and maybe Sunday will be on 68 , looking to share info

Steve,
Regarding Cape San Martin Buoy report. SW is accurate. Notice the trend from the early reports. That low pressure system is moving down, the barometric pressure is dropping.

WTF!!!!
I think they ought to just put up a big ? when I see forecasts like that. 5-15 with gusts to 20! So it is either going to be a flat calm day or really snotty!!!
Also...what's up with Cape San Martin Buoy and the 20+ knot SW wind? All of the other buoys are reading NW. Is it correct?
I think we are heading out Sat/Sun/Mon. See you in line Sunday night Reggie.
best fishes,

Dave, I have had issues with sea sickness on my boat and I got ReliefBands..I carry two on board..they really work...I have people out that always got sick, including my wife and they did fine...I wish they were around when my son was younger as he suffered and with this aid he wouldn't have...as for the weather, old and bold..there are old fishermen and bold fishermen but no old bold fishermen..good luck John

Darby and Hugh, no worries! I know right where everyone is coming from...I have three boys and ALL were green weenies for years, and it's been slow work getting them to actually look forward to the bumpy stuff! That's why I need to be careful; I want my boys to take me out on THEIR boats when they get older!

I am quite pleased with the latest forecasts and can't wait to get up there tomorrow evening, and so is my youngest son, Eli!

Something doesn't seem right about a local weather forecast from a web site in the UK (Magicseaweed). Probably a little old fashion, I guess.
Besides the Diablo Canyon Wx and NOAA I like to look at http://www.weather.gov/forecasts/graphical/sectors/southcalifornia.php

It gives a graphical look at the day almost hour by hour and you can get a feel for where it will come up, and which direction to go.
Be safe! Sean

Yes, it blows and that's just the way it is...and my 25 Farallon Whaleback is a tough little sled....BUT....I am bringing my 13 year old son who desperately wants to go and is notoriously prone to being seasick...he's growing out of that phase, but I want his first albacore trip out of Morro to be positive, and to be something that makes him want to go again and again, and again...I've been through the wringer with seasick kids and I've seen seasickness really turn them off to boating and fishing...and that's a shame....so, if I sound confused about go or no go....that's why....

great albacore article by harrell in the local Tribune today. ( also a good templeton football piece. go eagles) also visited moorfish's link to "magicseaweed" and read a bit on swells. hieght and period are just the begining to understanding what boating conditions one will find. i am more confused then ever and plan to take Darbys advice and shut up and fish.

Im a firm believer in trolling sinks 10-12 oz with a barrel swivel on each side. I have used it for 20+ years. works with cedar plugs, and feathers. Just remember how much the boat lines used to get bit and they had a 2 pounder or chain on the party boats.
A few years back before Dick Helgren passed away, I was on one of his 4 day trips O95 and was in in the water for the first rotation and alot of guys were against the sinker but I held strong and stayed in the corner. 20 Minutes later a 120llb Big Eye hit and after about 30 minutes and the fish on the boat, Dick had said, "Good job back there on the troll, I've known that kid since he was 4 back in the 70's when I used to take the the Electra to Morro Bay for Albacore. If he is anything like his old man he'll have 10 or so sinkers in the box and i'm sure he'll let you use one." I handed out several and told them dont worry about returning them. Felt Good and have never dropped back without a sinker.

Paul/Cloud,

Thanks for the come back. I agree that on sloppy days, weights are needed, and generally I do better even on calm days getting them down a little deeper. My guess about the lengths of chain, is that they not only serve as weight, but create a bubble stream that helps attract Tuna.

Thanks Again,

Rick/Tugfire

BTW--here's an interesting NOAA WX site. The left side allows parameter changes. At the top, you can move forward/backward in time. According to this forecast, Saturday looks pretty good, but as they say a good mariner does not depend on one sole source for information.

Right now the SM Buoy dominant wave period is 8.7 ft at 7 sec. Ouch.

Rick/Tugfire

I've successfully used torpedoe weights mainly when its been too sloppy and the jigs wouldn't stay in the water. There have been trips though when on calm day the one weighted jig was the only one to get bit, so all got changed over and the boat got filled pronto. One of those things just figuring out the mood of the fish. I've now got a dive planer I'd like to give a shot, but no chances yet this year. I've heard many commercial guys use lengths of chain.

Like Harrel I am a fair weather guy--pain takes too much fun outa the trip. There's only one thing worse than gettin' old as they say.

Paul/FV Flyer--wishing best of luck atchya, lookin forward to report.

Hi Guys,

For years, I've been useing 10 oz. torpedos, in front of my jig leaders to weight them down a little. I was just wondering if anyone else did?

Thanks,

If it's absolutely too s.....y we'll turn around, but i'm gambling it's going to be fishable enough. Looks like 30-40 miles should be holding. I'll have 68 on if anyone else wants to give it a shot.

harrell. can u help me with what APD is? last two trips out. all sounded good with swell ht and sec. apart, but we were hit with what u were saying about very steep swells or swells with no bottom to them. had to reduce speed just not to be launched. whatever this APD is i would like to use in forecasting my next trip, seems many folks on the board are like me just counting sec's and swell ht.w/ wind

Tim - I is looking at sailflow.com projections for Arguello and SM Buoys. Not sure what to make of NWS Arguello Offshore forecast for Fri. Gusting 25 turning variable???? Those boys have not had much luck forecasting the past couple years...at least that's my experience. Certainly some leftover bump on Friday. Trip not confirmed...talking to Pratt about Sat too. Go get em.

Dave;
Here is a link to the Cape San Martin right now. Don't be fooled by the DPD (9ft at 12 sec) it is the APD that will make it very uncomfortable ! Now at the CSM buoy it is 8 ft at 13 sec DPD buttt the APD is 5.8 sec and very steep.

Weather fri - sat;
I have been waiting all day for the forecast updates to see what it would probably be like out at the donut which is where you will need to go based on the latest chlorophyll.
Here is what friday looks like; the swell will be as high as 10ft thursday night and the wind at 15 kts at 5am friday morning. By 11am the wind will be down to 10 kts and the swell maybe 8 ft. Probably be about the same the rest of the day. Doesn't sound like my kind of a day.
Saturday starts out at 10 kts early with swell still at 6-8 ft and then by noon is about 15kts and then by 5pm about 20kts. Again not my kind of a day to go 50-60 miles but then I am a fair weather sailor. This scenario is based on the latest computer model and only at the donut.

Sunday - monday look much better and I will take a look at them tomorrow evening. Rigt now my preference would be monday as both the wind and swell are forecast to be down.

OK at the risk of making this sound like some kind of singles ad...

MWM, 51, located in North county. Been on the water all my life, lots of tuna experience. Engine builder by trade with 15 years in marine engines (currently doing racing engines for GM). Excellent mechanical skills and will fish till the baits gone.

If somebody is looking for for additional crew I have flexible hours and can pay my own way.

Greetings,
I was cruising around PSL today with my daughter and saw that Deke's boat was gone...guessing he was out making bait:-) I'm sure he'll post soon. I think he said he'd charge Patriot a couple grand per scoop if the albacore came in!!!
Reggie,
Definetly plan on taking the Avocation out Sunday for some tuna. I'll see you in line Saturday night! Maybe we can get Dustin to meet us for a little cocktail party;p
best fishes,
steve

Fellas - I'm on the computer this afternoon and the wind models show a decent blow tomorrow but Friday light wind all day. Anybody else think Friday might be a day to run offshore? It is my birthday and working on Fridays is way overrated. I'd probably haul up from SB and launch PSL when they open unless there is bait in Morro and none in Avila.

Craig.

Barry,
I will be there on Sunday if I have to go it alone! We got back from SD on Tuesday for two great days of catching, Yellow Fin, Dorodos and Yellow tail and my fishing crew can not go this Sunday. So I have a few others that have said they want to go, just waiting to see the weather and bait situation. We can not miss what we have been waiting for all season!!!

Looks like wind will drop off Sunday to light and variable with a 4-6 ft. swell.(meteora) If there ever is a time it will be then. Marty, looks like I will spend the night on the boat in line for Sun am. after work. Hope we can get you there early. Is Chipper, Steve (Avocation), Mel, or anyone else looking to do it on Sunday? Company is always welcome, and let's go and get some fish.

Mike H, good story on how you got the bug.
You have come a long way in a relatively short time. you became "Hardcore" very quickly.
and you've even got the boat to do it yourself offshore now. are you stuck at work this weekend?
if you launch out of psl or morro we will see you this weekend.

Harrell, that is the first year I caught my first Albacore and I was bottom fishing and a guy came buy trolling for Tuna! I followed him out and only had bait and He got a short jig strike starting tossing bait and I did the same Had no clue on what I was doing and I got bit, still to this date it is the largest Albacore I have landed, 58 LBS. Hooked for life!!

Told this story before but can't resist a repeat:

Jan 8 1998 about 10 am. Get a call from John Rowley to Jim Nielsen (deathwish) and John said there are albacore in Estero bay. Jim calls me and we launch his 15 ft tin boat at 12 noon and start trolling the 55 lon line. We caught 3 albacore, a 45,60 and 65 lb as close as 4 miles from the rock ! Now that was the good ole days ! The Princess caught 31 the next day but didn't log where.

Hey guys - first time poster/long time fan. Wanted to add .02 on line color. I use a flaming red, flourescent line for halibut fishing. It is so bright it almost hurts your eyes to look at it and thats why I use it. with a C-rigged live bait on light line I can really see whats going on and know when to let up and let 'em eat. I dive also and have seen what this line looks like at anything over 30' - just kind of very light grey. I use a clear leader. I would suggest trying it for any bottom fishing / drift fishing.

I don't really see any advantage to it for the tuna and am planning on sticking with good 'ol Ande for that... Speaking of Tuna - Hot Damn! I have not been tuna fishing up here since '84, and that one did not end well. I got on the Finalista 100 out of MB and the dang thing burned and sank on us 40 mi off Pt. Buchon at about 4 AM! So I'm looking forward to getting THAT 25 year old skunk off!

.02 on feathers purple/black early and zuccini late. Abortion (purple/black/pink) or mexican flag (green white red) in bright light/overcast. Thats how Daddy did it, thats how I've done it for years, ain't gonna change now, Still have Dad's old abalone shell head, purple/black and I plan to CAREFULLY rig it and catch a fish in his honor this year.

See you around at the donut...

Keith
