Greetings, Great day on the water with Gary Moore on the Waverunner! Wow, what a great captain and a great guy! We launched at 4:45 and got 1 1/2 scoop of sardines from Doug. Good bait that lasted the whole day!. Ran on a 211 from MB. Put in the lines at 47 miles when we had a sharp 2 degree temp break (60 to 62). Got a triple in 5 minutes, then put 4 more in on bait. Got slow, so headed SW towards that Donut. Never made it that far..ended the day a little after noon with our quota of 20 fish. They were probably averaging 15 pounds, with a few 25 pounders thrown in. Got a little snotty after noon with the wind definitely blowing 15 knots. Thanks again Gary. Had an epic day. best fishes, steve |

Quick post; 21 Albacore to 30 lbs all good quality, no dinks. We quit at 21(all we wanted) before noon and made the very sloppy ride home. Didn't hear of many fish caught inside 50 sm. All at and above the donut. |

Will let everyone post for themselves, but sounds like the day was good for some and slow for others. Admiral Pratt was 7 miles from the Rock and was turning on Radar. Said it was a bumpy ride back in, but spirits were high on the decks of 'My Three Sons' So nice to get on the water reports of Tuna again. Been a long time |

Hey Hugh, I did not see this till just now. Tomorrow was too soon anyway, still have a couple of small things to do on boat. Monday is good for me weather permitting. The Doughnut is a long haul in a 21' boat. It has the range and a solid hull(06 2101 DC Striper). Hopefully the fish will move in a bit. Lets stay in touch. I am around tomorrow. 286-1732 Charlie |

WASABI AND SOY. Always on the boat, the hearts taste better with a bit of soy, the leftover bait tastes better with wasabi. any combo will do but plain is fine too. WE have one more night of sahimi tonight, and We have to get some fresh ones monday. but always best same day on boat for cave man reasons. BTW sardine is bony. |

PSL 'but report: Launched the skiff off the pier at 6:30 and made bait by 7:30...headed N of the lighthouse under sloppy, but glassy seas. Fished all the normal spots for 1 24" 'but, 1 short ling, 1 black and 1 gopher by 1 pm! Very slow. Water temps were 59 at the pea patch. Picked up another buddy at 1 pm and headed down to Shell for 1 28" flattie and another short ling. Water temp was 62! Both fish were caught in about 50' of water. Little bit of wind in the afternoon, but the swell was definitely mellowing out. Heard that Deke got some nice dines today!!! See you folks out on the water tomorrow. best fishes, steve |

Hope to put a small batch in the smoker tonight and feed it to the crew monday, eat the quarry on the trip. does anyone else ever "Steak" out their small albys for the bbq anymore? chill fish, knife and saw into slices. BBQ just like salmon steaks ,pop out red eye, easy to do, less waste maybe? just wondering. used to do that a lot. |

Looks like things are coming together and we're planning on running tomorrow from PSL. Just got in from a little inshore fishing. It was slow with just a few Bolina but I burned some fuel like I wanted. The swell was as forecast this morning, 8' and a real short period. Not a lot of fun but it started to come down as the morning wore on. We came in at about 11:00 and the wind was just a breath and the fog was burning off. IF YOU'RE RUNNING FROM PSL SATURDAY MORNING AND WANT TO GET OUT EARLY, CALL MARTY AT THE LAUNCH SO HE CAN GET A HEAD COUNT AND DETERMINE IF HE NEEDS TO OPEN EARLY. Good luck tomorrow! "Tree Doc" will be on 68 |

We used to live in Walker Trailer park back in the early 70s, My brothers and I were total warf rats. I remember hanging out at Giannini's as a kid, good times. Joseph Giannini, a Morro Bay icon, dies at age 94 By Bill Morem | bmorem@thetribunenews.com The acknowledged godfather of the Morro Bay fishing fleet, former city councilman, mayor and businessman Joseph C. “Joe” Giannini died Sept. 14 from complications due to a fall he took in August. He was 94. Born in Portland, Ore., July 28, 1915, Giannini was the son of Sicilian immigrants Giuseppe and Caterine Giannini, who moved to the U.S. in 1905. His introduction to Morro Bay was pure accident. While fishing for soupfin shark about 100 miles off the coast in late summer 1946, he came upon a boat in distress and towed the vessel into the nearest port — Morro Bay, a harbor he’d never heard of. “When I got here, the ocean was alive!” Giannini told the Los Angeles Times in 2006. “You could pluck razor clams off of Morro Rock, and big Pismo clams would just wash up on the shore — you didn’t even have to dig! In the tide pools you’d turn over a rock — and there it all was, just teeming!” Over the next 50-plus years the taut, deeply tanned fisherman with a shock of white hair and voice that could boom one moment and gear down to sotto voce the next, couldn’t have been a more dynamic fixture in the community if he’d been a native son. He lobbied the Army Corps of Engineers to stop quarrying Morro Rock, and got dredging for the harbor going from the same agency; successfully worked for incorporation of the community in 1964; held positions on the City Council and served as mayor in the late 1960s; owned the now-shuttered Sun-Bulletin newspaper for several years; owned and operated a successful chandlery and fish processing plant; and took on the benevolent task of being a no-interest loan officer for the fleet. He was just as generous with his time. “Joe Giannini was a giant presence on the Morro Bay waterfront,” said Rick Algert, Morro Bay harbor director. “Everyone knew him and went to him with their questions or seeking advice. “Shortly after I came to Morro Bay, I was trying to get a feel for the community and the history, and Joe spent hours telling stories about everything.” Giannini hung up his hooks in 1960, when an albacore season could see as many as 330 fishing boats in the harbor, and opened the Morro Bay Marine Supply Store. He operated the store until 1972 and sold the store to son Jody. In the intervening years, the Morro Bay fleet has dwindled to a shadow of its former strength and now numbers around 50 boats. Whether because of a collapsing fishery, cheap imported fish, environmental restrictions or high diesel prices, the slide was painful for Giannini to watch. He told the Los Angeles Times in 2006: “I sometimes go out to the Rock and look over at the harbor. There’s nothing there any more. It’s just about gone.” Giannini was picnicking at Leffingwell Landing near Cambria on Aug. 2 when he fell from some steps, crushing his femur. Following surgery, he developed pneumonia, which he beat, then suffered kidney failure, which he reversed through several dialysis treatments. He succumbed to yet another bout of pneumonia. “He was a fighter to the end, and we really thought he was going to beat this,” said daughter Elaine. “I like to remember Joe sitting at an outside table at Tognazzini’s, just a couple of months ago, with the sun shining on his face and thinking what an incredible life he had witnessed and how healthy and sharp he was in his 90s,” said Algert. Daughters Elaine and Barbara Cefalu and 19 grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive Giannini. Son Jody preceded him in death. Memorial services are set for Oct. 5 at St. Timothy’s Church in Morro Bay at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at the Morro Bay Yacht Club. Donations in his name may be made to Hospice Partners of the Central Coast; or to the Jody Giannini Family Dog Park, 2988 Birch, Morro Bay 93442. |

WEATHER UPDATE: The wind has come down a little bit ahead of schedule and is forecast to stay down all day today. This should bring the swell down faster and tomorrow is looking good but sunday is still forecast to blow 15kts all day. Monday, tuesday and wednesday are also looking good on the current models. |

Be careful what you say about Tred Barta. The man has been dealt a very hard set of cards. He presently is paralyzed from the chest down and is facing bankruptcy from his medical condition. Really tragic considering his love of the game. |

Will be in line at PSL on Sun 12:30 am at the latest. Pacifico is the fishing favorite for us tailgaters, and yeah the marine reports are covering their asses. Sunday should be a good day also for those who can leave week 2 nfl for sportscenter. I feel some kind of Tred Barta thing, local style going on. What a freak that guy is. |
