We we're thinking about tomorrow but I spoke with John Lindsey this morning and he said Friday/Saturday is looking much better than tomorrow. Perhaps the plume will push in a bit also...

Just talked to Pices out on the tuna grounds and they had a half dozen or so but..... for those planning to go tomorrow it was getting pretty sloppy out there.

Ryan, it should be easy to tell when you cleaned it the meat is much darker than yellowfin.

Ryan -
If it had short pectoral fins, it was likely a bluefin. Congratulations!

A few years ago they caught a Dorado and Yellowtail out of Monterey during a El Nino year and I have been fishing for 30 years with people like Dick and Joey Helgren, Eddie and Barry Deal, John Pratt, Greg Trompas, and have seen many a boatlines snapped by big tuna and 4/0 spooled on the troll. when the Eldorado ran out of Morro Bay during albacore season in 82 they put a 100lb yellowfin on the boat and several bigeye in 60-70 lb range not to mention many opah back in the 80's and 90's.

It had a yellow fin and very short fins. Definately not an albacore. Wish it was a bluefin but I don't think so.

About 6 years ago while commercial fishing on the weekender with Larry Royal and Jerry Waldlaw I caught a 40Lb Yellow Fin tuna… At 1st I only noticed that it was much larger then the other Fish we had, then I notched it didn’t have the long fins. Larry and Jerry, and some other old salts confirmed it was a yellow fin, we sold that fish to BJ and he got top dollar for it. I remember it hit the rod with the clone/feather way behind the boat. So they can come here for sure. I It would nice to see some caught out here, hoping to get one or nice blue fin this year

Fished about 10-15 miles north of the donut, 54/37.
we boated 14lft to 25 pounds more or less and 1 skipjack. with 2 triple and 1 quad hookups, most of the fish were caught between 10:45 and 11:45am. i did receive a report last night of yellowfin caught near the donut, it's possible.
I was in southern oregon last week and a boat near us was hooked up on a dorado. hope to see more in the upcoming weeks...

Hey Guys/Gals - glad to hear the tuna are biting and people are getting out. The Annual Central Coast Salmon Enhancement fund-raising dinner is this Saturday (26OCT). If you do not have a planned fishing trip on Saturday - come on out and support your local Salmon Enhancement group. For further info, please call (805)473-8221. The venue this year is the same as last year - South County Regional Center - 800 W. Branch Street, Arroyo Grande, CA. Hope this year's tuna run is sustained and lasts into 2010. Thank you.

Sunday's report: Left at 0500hrs (without Cracka) , ok conditions for ten miles then turned progressivly worse. However, pushed through it at 10-15 knots til we hit 62 dregrees at about 45mi on a 211 from Morro. Threw out gear, got our first strike in 63 dergrees- 47 miles out. trolled through the donut for 11 albacore and one 40lbs yellowfin. Good size fish 20-25 lbs avg. trolling in the am produced on blk\purple and zuccinnis. Bait stops in the pm picked up with two boilers around the boat. Tried several times to call out numbers but no one replied- oh well. One of the boils a center concole motored past, I waved them over but they just kept going... We can lead them to water but the rest is on them. Back at Morro by 1730, vacume packed half and smoked the other. It sure is great to have the long fins back. Going to make another run in the morning. Same route plan straight through the donut and back.

Listening to the boats out there today it sounds good both weather and catching. The numbers that I heard are around the 30 lon line and 56 lat. The weather should stay good until the wind comes up some time tomorrow so it might be worth a shot.

Went out of Morro Bay yesterday- got a late start; about 10:45 am. Went out towards donut about 45 or so miles. Boy it was rough- I gave up my bfast plus some to the seas.

Caught two albies in the 15-20 lbs range. Had three other strikes, but couldn't hang on to them. All strikes on trolling purple feathers.

Can't wait till they're closer in...

You were raeding my mind Hugh. I have not looked up the numbers yet but closer would be better.
I was out on the Admiral yesterday and the bite was off. We only got 7 fish to 20 lbs. I think Princess got 10.

Weather got better as day wore on. Would have been tough in a small boat like mine. We were in the area of the Doughnut.

Chad have to agree about the Sabre rods. I have a couple and they seem to be a great value.

I have bought many reels from ebay with good success. Any Penn 4/0 - 6/0 is great for trolling. Lots of available parts and cheap to keep. I prefer the Shimano TLD series of reels and have owned many. They can be bought with ease on Ebay. They seem to be bullit proof as well. I have never had to replace a drag washer on my Shimano TLD's. They have a grafite body so no corrosion. Lots of available parts for them through Shimano.Get the TLD 20, 25 or 30.

Chad

I have to second Steve's recommendation on the reel, I have a 113H on a 5.5 roller troller rod (forgot-cal star maybe). It's lasted since '91 with a fair amount of neglect except washdowns, and survived the 95-98 tuna runs. Only one breakdown, resulting in overhaul/service/drag change--there was a broken component but no big deal. The reel was about 65. bux back then. It's been a great value, has literally caught hundreds of LFT, and is still in the lineup.

The 5.5 length on rod was to purposely keep the line closer to the water, not to mention save my achin' back due to better leverage. Dunno if tiger rods are made that short but also great value (IMHO) if so. .02,

Cloud out

Stephen Bengtson,
Glad to hear you got into them. We made a run early this morning, but only got about 23 miles before we pulled the plug. We hit a wall of snotty water and we could barely make 7 kts. From the sounds of it, we weren't alone. I know the High Voltage and a couple others toughed it out, but offshore today was no place for a 20 ft. trophy.
Don't worry about not being able to stop and say hi. I'm sure we'll see you again this season. You can do me a favor, though. Next time you talk to your son, tell him there are a couple of fishermen who want to thank him for his service. You have no idea how much I admire people who are willing to not only put their lives on the line for their country, but to do so on the other side of the world! His selfless sacrifice of time, blood and sweat has not gone unnoticed. God bless this country and those who have fought to protect it.

Phillip & Jeremy Peterson

Chad,
Get some Ugly Sticks (30-50# line) and Penn Senators (113H?). Solid rigs that are bullet proof and will last you a lifetime!

Greetings,
Fished PSL in the skiff today. Got a sweet scoop of dines and headed N of the lighthouse. Very slow fishing today, but we ended up with 2 'buts (24 & 30"), 1 keeper ling, 6 shorts, and 4 bolina. Both fish were in about 40' of water on the kelp line. Not much wind inshore in the morning, but sloppy. Wind picked up pretty good around 1 pm.
I sure hope the wind comes down because that Tuna fishing sure was fun:-)
best fishes,
steve

Scroll down to Tim Foley's report. That would be my first stop because it is closer with nice size fish. 34:56 and 121:29 or when you hit the first break (62 degrees).

I need to purchase two tuna trolling set ups (rod and reel) for my boat. Anyone have any good reccomendations of rods/reels. Will mainly use for trolling for tuna in our area and down south on my boat. Albacore mainly just as most of you are doing now. I dont want to spend thousands but I dont like buying crap. I usually spend a little extra on nice good value gear. I have calstar graphiters and Calcutta 400 TLE's for drifting and rockfish and love the lightweight and smoothness. What can you reccomend for a good value that will last. I treat my gear pretty rough, hose it down and tune it up every 1-2 years. Thanks for any advice. Harrell thanks again your the man!

Fished Port San Luis Sunday and put off our tuna run immediately. Very snotty! We knew that would probably happen because the weather report had done a 180. Fished for 3/4 limits of rockfish in 200 feet of water. Boy my wrist and arm's sore. It settled down nicely inside and a beautifull day on the water. Never saw the sun though! Time to do all the chores now and more tomorrow. You know what I mean. Tim

Went out today for LFT to the donut and turned back at 24 mi out of PSL. Confused seas and building wind to make things worse in pm, made the decision for us. Hope to make it Wednesday, if Nature grants us fair seas. No fish, good bait from Deke, thanks. Marty is a really good guy, yesterday is just another example of who he is. Good wrench, doesn't gouge you, and glad to have him around. Cheers to Marty, buy this guy a brew next time you see him. R.

Just returned from Morro Bay. Tried to head for the donut, but turned around at 37.5 miles due to the conditions. It was a big washing machine out there. Lots of green water coming over the windshield. Motored in 10 miles and waited drifted until sunrise before motoring the rest of the way back in. We trolled from 27 miles in, to 8 miles in 58.5 degree water, had one spike to 59 degree, but not much signs, and no fish.
Heard (3) or so other boats turn around at the same place we did. (It was fishable inside 25 miles).

While on a rockfish/halibut trip on saturday on my boat we were drifting for flatties near the coke plant.I hooked a large fish that took a hour to get up.I was not sure what it was because
it swam slow but like a bull. When we got it up after chasing it down what we saw blew us away. It was a 10ft + great white, I estimate around 350-400# as soon as we got 2 good looks we cut the line. Unfortunatly no one had a camera for a rockfish trip!!!

Billy Boy Doug has a new load of small sardines with a few larger ones and anchovies mixed in. Looks like a really good albacore mix. Should be a bit healthier too since it wasn't so rough when we were trying to get them in the boat.

Spent about three hours at 43 and 36 all by our lonesomes yesterday...we only stayed three because my 13 year old was stupendously seasick....but what a trooper, never whined, never complained, in fact the only sounds we heard from him were otherworldly guttural missives from the bowels of his abdomen and those other bowels....I felt so terrible for him, but so proud at the same time for being so tough...
Anyway, we got 14 fish in those three hours, two dinks and the rest 14 to maybe 18 or 19....who knows....kinda sloppy out there....but glad to have fished with the crew, and what a fun evening we all had last night....red cups to all....

Ran from PSL yesterday. First waypoint for us was at about 38nm to check the waters NE of the Donut at 34*56 / 121*29. Hit the 62* water and put 6 lines in and within 2 minutes 3 went off. The usual first drop mayhem insued. 3 to the boat, 2 landed. Dropped in again and boxed the area and within minutes all 6 went off, couple unbuttoned right away, put 3 in the box. Third set brought us a single strike and an engine alarm at the exact same time. Motor goes down, Harry landed a nice 25# fish. We were in a nice pocket of 20-25# grade fish but now we had other matters to tend to. Our day was looking like it was done and it was about to get real long!

First off, a BIG THANK YOU to Stewart on the Greylight. He was nearby and answered our hail for a possible assist and relayed our situation to a few others out there with suggestions on what we might attempt to solve our issue. Unfortunately, our problem wasn't going to be a simple fix so we were dead in the water. Greylight kept in contact with us the whole time making sure we were OK up until we were hooked up with the USCG.

I got the ball rolling by hailing the Coast Gaurd who sent the awesome crew of Motor Life Boat 47231 some 43 miles out to tow us in to Port like a boatload of Haitian Refugees. At least we had 6 in the box and many hours to all discuss how many more we likely would have had the way things were going.

I'd like to thank Marty @ PSL for being there to help out, too. I called him when we got into cell range on our tow and explained our plight. He arranged to have a hand off made just outside of Port with the PSL Harbor Patrol while Marty came out in the Taxi and scooped up our driver so we were on the hoist as soon as we touched the dock. It was quite the welcoming committee! Thanks again Marty and the PSL Patrol Guys as well.

fished longfin out of morro bay sat. went straight out on a 230 and got 62-63 degree water around 40 miles or so. put lines out and got a double(peanuts)ileas back out and a single. could not get them to got on the rather large dines we had. trolled south towards the donut and started picking up better quility of fish. lots of short strikes and a few lost at the boat but a great trip. very sloppy conditions on the way in on my 22 foot CC. fished with scotty, chip, brian, paul and bobby on two boats. noew its time to clean the blood of the boat.

Went tuna fishing out of MB Sat. and ended the day with 7. All around 20lbs. Fished 35.08/121.40 and fished by myself since all my friends had to wash their hair or some other important job. Nice temp break 64 degrees. Would have had more but a great day and all were caught on the troll. Small baits because all had very small baitfish in stomachs. Hope you get to go. "Hey Day" sorry I drove past you in the parking lot but I needed to get on the road home. Son in Marines leaves for Afganistan and came home for last visit.

Fished albacore Sat. with guest captain Dustin Selck and my wife Debi. Baited at Dekes @ 3a.m. and proceeded to 3450/12140 64 degree edge. Fished from 7:30 to noon for 34 fish. Multiple hook-ups an the jigs w/ bait fish on most stops. Grade varied from 6-25 lbs most in the teens. Seems like good quantity of fish around. Sure enjoyed the day...like the "old days". My friend Mark Johnson of Carpenteria fished near me and had 31 fish as well. Sounded like everyone was catching fish. Weather this week looks doable. Go get 'em!

Mary Jane III ended the day with 22 albacore from small 6-7 pounds, to few very large 35lbs.... we put in the gear at 47 miles right before the donut and picked up a few small fish.. just has steve said right when we hit the temp break the fish started to hit rightaway... very, very fun day a few double and quad hookups but most hook ups in am were 1-2 fish... we had to leave with fish wide open and biting to make it back to port san luis before they closed so i guess we were the boat that got left out there... what happened to the new hours and being open until half hour before sunset...(especially during albacore season) overall a great trip but i would not say wide open all day.. had a blast one thing i can say is the albacore are here guys.. already had a piece of sashimi and it was delicious... go get em guys there at the donut dont waste time looking before the donut.. good luck

I am thinking of driving my boat up to PSL from Santa Barbara on Monday to fish tuna Tuesday to Friday. A few questions for everyone.

Mooring-How much per day for 26ft boat? Do I call the harbormaster on ch12?

Will bait be available, if so at what time?

Where is diesel and ice available in the harbor?
