Hugh, rather than downsizing your photos, just upload them to a free account at www.photobucket.com then when you want to post a Pic here, go to photobucket, find the photo and copy the "direct link" url and paste it in your post.

Like so.....

Weather;
Tomorrow doesn't look like it is backing off very much,15kts most of the day so will need to watch and see what happens tomorrow. Sunday is a little better and monday is good until noon or so. Swell is not coming down much either so the best day could still be sloppy. Horrible is still in the forecast for tues/wed.

Fished with Aaron north of MB today for some good action. 10 lings w/ only 2 keepers, but more action than I have had in the past couple of weeks. The good news -3 flatties to 20 pounds. The 3 flatties all cam within a 45 minute period when the lunch bell must have rung. After that flurry of action they got lock jaw and the lings started to bite again. All fish on live bait and in about 50 feet of water. It was sloppy out there w/ whitecaps by around 10:30. I had to use a drift sock to keep the boat speed fish able. It DID NOT look like a good day to chase the Albis-especially in my 20 footer. Time to cook some halibut for the kids.

Good luck this weekend to all.

Hi Hugh,
To downsize your photos: Right click on them and open with Microsoft Office Picture Manager.
Click on 'picture", select 'resize', and change the pixels to 400x400 which I believe is the largest size.
Hopefully this works.

Hey guys, I believe this is the weekend of the Harbor Festival. You know it should would be nice to go to breakfast with all of you and put faces to names & swap info. Oh, and bring your boats, park as close to the festival\choice paking-just like we would do if there were meters at the ramp on any given day. Get the point?

Some deep V style hulls can be downright scary going down hill. If your bow digs a rail and you don't turn the wheel the right way you can be sideways or in the water! Don't ask me how I know.
Luckily all that I had was a 1"x 1" patch torn from the seat of my captains chair. Glad everyone was safe, watch that weather. Sounds like Monday.

Mike, BTW its ok to use Ch 16 for Hailing/contact also, and its expected, and you should monitor it ,most of us have dual watch or scan or similar anyway.
Just dont use it for conversations , and use 1 watt in harbor so everyone afar doesent have to listen. also guys remember to set your radios on USA channels, not intl. is that what you meant about not using 16??

Mike, glad to hear all you got was a story to tell and a lesson for all. surprised to hear about the downswell ride characteristics, wonder if Id have the same troublein similar? Did You list more than 90degrees or close to it ? or beyond it and back? The reason I dont have a hardtop is that I had a choice of affording a bigger boat with no top(in my 30s, a top was a comfort item ,not a necessity) OR a21 fter with 60gal less fuel and a hard top. As I already have a 20'4" boat with full canvas and was tired of the gas can dance at sea I chose the "bigger boat" avenue.
A couple times I have considered upsizig to the 26'proline W/A from the 138gal/23.5'model but the fuel range is less, even with 175gal, the performance is less, the engine/drive is more stressed and the towing, maint and storage become much more difficult.
Those sound like lousy reasons while at sea in dangerous conditions but they are "real" considerations in day to day life of owning boats.
I have, so far, been able to do such things as run into coves while at the islands or put the swell behind me and go with them. I can run to the coastal cove shelters(get to know them) or even below conception or further most days when fuel is sufficient. But I generally dont tempt the weather much south/southeast of PSL and often wait for decent conditions. Wind is our nemessis up here ,the swell goes with the open ocean territory IMHO. I have turned around or departed grounds more times than I can remeber. We are cosiderabley more "sheltered" than the center consoles and fishing skiffs often found offshore and are in no way topheavy or high windage but im still mentally engineering a pilot house adaptation and walkaround covering canvas dodger as improvements
I had a ~20ft pilot housed sea ray for a while in the 90s but it didnt have a self draining deck and its fuel was comparatively tiny.
Would enjoy hearing saga in detail next time we are in port together. Your tale may save lives
if someone thinks a bit harder before commiting.
I just had my first CG assist monday in 32years of year round local ocean voyaging (pump already replaced/waiting on new control and cables to upgrade unreliable old mercruiser shifter box).
we werent adrift but they got us off the water faster to avoid later trouble. dont be a lone wolf if the weather is to questionable, when we lone wolf, its not becasue of weather but becasue no one knows where the fish are and we end up being one of seemingly less than a dozen localpsl /MB sporties that do the prospecting. you were in that group last year.

So,
Here is what I found out when I called both Morro Bay and San Fran Coast guard. There is really no written policy on what to do for a boat in our situation as a general rule. This is very understandable after talking to both places. They are run by officers and just like good managers, they have policies in place to run their departments. The other issue is my boat and my experience is different than some one elses, so I may be able to handle the situation better or worse than some one else. The response can not be the exact same. So, if you need to request a 80 ft cutter, 3 helicoptors and a bottle whiskey, if that is what you need to help you get out of the situation you are in, then they will let you know what they can do and they will work it out from there.Be very specific on your ability to function and get your boat and crew in. They do not need to have you die on their shift and they will do everything in their power to save you. This is why they do spank any one who uses channel 16 for anything else other than an emergency. So stay off the channel unless you really need them. If a Coast Guard officer reads this and I have missed quoted, please correct me, I have recieved a lot of emails from people on this sight wanting to know what I find out and what they should do if the same situation arrise for them.

Thanks for the help from the finest, Coast Guard Morro and San Fran.

Mike,
Glad to hear you made it safely....that must have been a real puckering experience. Just FYI if any of you are looking for an EPIRB I just bought one from WM. It was $200 off, this portable model is being discontinued for a new model but very popular. You can't purchase online, I had to call the individual stores, but Marina Del Ray had three. It was $399 which is a pretty good buy and may give a little extra security if things go wrong. Tight lines fair weather!

Harrell, Tim, Ya all, I'll do that dielectic grease, all good stuff...I think the reason I never had problems before is that buss bar is directly below the cup holder in the center console which has a drain hole... when i wash the boat just before we go out It gets wet and seems to be ok...That was the first time I've ever checked it when the boat was bone dry...I learned something again at my age...Im goin Sun. If its to rough we'll fish the flattys...Thanx again... Harrell keep us informed as usual, maybe a good shot sat...Dragon out.

Guys, thanks for all of the post, Montery/ Santa Cruz can be an Ugly place when the wind comes up, I believe this is because of the deep channel and the up drift that happens there. This is why I run out of Santa Cruz instead of Monterey. You are at least, for the most part, running cross swell and under power, if you run into Monterey it is about 4 miles closer where we where fishing, but you have to run down swell and then you are being pushed and ridding the swell, my 26 ft Stripper does not do well surfing in 16 ft swells. This is why I run to Santa Cruz, when you get above the trench it flatens out a bunch. Just fyi, I checked the wind and swell on the Monterey Bouy for the time we headed home and here was the report at the hight of our ordeal. Wind gust where clocked at 33 knts and swell high was at 16ft, both peaked at 7:00 right when we where 12 miles out!So much for 10 to 15knts.
I do have a question for some one who can answer this, maybe a Coast Guard Officer that reads our post.
What is the procedure for the Coast Guard when a vessel is in that situation, or what is a vessel to do or expect from the Coast Guard? They have a station I believe at Monterey. We hailed them and recieved a call back from San Francisco, but I have read several post on this sight about guys coming into Morro Bay and having a Coast Guard Cutter following them in. I sure would have felt a lot better knowing some one would have been there to pull us out if we would have rolled. 56 degree water and at night, they would have just found the bodies. We have a hand held radio that is submersable, but who knows! So, this would be a great venue for some Coast Gurad information to let us know what to expect or what we should do in the same situation.I am a pretty fair weather fisherman and would not have been on the water if there was any hint that the wind was going to Gail force in three hours. So any help, or suggestion from the Coast Guard would be appreciated. Please understand this is not a dig on the Coast Guard, they are a greatly needed and respected force from us fishermen, I have heard to many reschues on the radio over the years by the Coast Guard.

Thanks Mike

Second that Dave Pratt--every connection that can be found inside or out. I learned the hard way on my prior 18' CC, good boat but wet. General FYI--Mercury and Cannon Downrigger folks make a (supposedly) special marine type, both have served me well, but I have a jar of inherited no-name stuff that also works great. I do a thourough check beginning and end of each season, spot-checks in between.

Amazing how one bad ground can ruin sanity at best, risk life at worst. $.02, Cloud out

Six years ago I took my 20' Cabo to the donut on a iffy day by 10:00am I turned around. It got really bad and was fearing for my life. It took me 6hrs to get in and I kissed the dock on my return. Two days later I found a 18" crack in my bow.My point is that to many times I see guys off shore with 19' Bayliners still sporting their fenders.Know your boats limits and be careful. If you don't have a blue water boat jump on a party boat and come home alive.

Mike, Great post (lesson) for all. I've been watching your posts for years and believe you to be one of the real ones here. What happened to you today could have happened to any of us and it is a great reminder.

Watch...Be aware...Be safe...Be smart...Share numbers to stay in company...lend aid when you can...ask when you need. Heed the fisherman's code! We're brothers.

Dave, we're shooting for Monday, hope to fish with you again!

Left this morning at 0200, running slow to the grounds. Barely got half the jigs in the water and got lit up... at 30 miles. My crewman today was an old friend who lives in so cal Kenny, woke up to me screaming "fish on!" and the look on his face was priceless! At first he though i was screaming "Shark!". Hilarious! He learned very quickly how to pull jigline albies by hand. Will post numbers tomorrow when i pull them off my boat computer. Got 5 real quick, nice 20-25# grade, then things got slow til the afternoon. As for the weather, i've seen a lot worse, but it was definitely very sloppy. If there would have been a bigger groundswell, it would have been very ugly. We stuck it out, along with Rita G and Princess, and ended up getting one more on the way in at 28 miles. Our fish came in 61.9 degree water, near a warmer edge... same scenario in 2 different areas. Oh, if anyone finds a grey lid to a small rubbermaid boatline tub, it's probably mine. Hoping to make it out sunday if the weather improves. By the way, John's comment about radar reflectors is right on. At least one near miss has happened recently with the seas and fog. Good luck to all and be safe.

Glad you made it back safe Mike and crew. Scarey stuff. We have spent many a night at Santa Rosa Island only to get blown off the anchor in the middle of the night due major wind. Worst night blew 40 to 60-kts when forecasts were calling for pm winds of 15 to 25 kts.

R Marti- Just a heads up. I noticed the stormsurfing site that John posted freezes once it moves into Tue and Wed models. Maybe just a glitch. Other wind sites are caling for major wind Tue and Wed.

Thanx Tim; I'll try that 1st...Oh Ya... I will give a shout out to all on the radio when I find fish...When I get it working...Some guy helped me out when I was @ the Channel Is. some years back, glad he was there.(both of my sons where with me, they where teenagers then) I tried to pay him for his assitance as it was greatly appreaciatd...He declined the $$ and told me no problem. Just help someone out when Its your turn...I've taken that with me all these years. Well its been my turn a few times since then..and I will gladly do it... Later Paul

Wow Mike,Glad you made it in OK and you got fish. Even after taking all precautions and checking forcasts it can still change quite rapidly sometimes. Days like that really reinforce your respect for the ocean. I once made a trip to Santa Rosa Island and the wind came up in the afternoon and was blowing 24 w/gust to 32. We stayed overnight planning on leaving the next morning at O dark thirty to beat the wind. All night it blew 24-32 and was blowing 24-32 in the morning. I had to make it back for a family event the next day so we went for it. I rounded the top end of Rosa and the swells were huge with big breaking wightcaps. I would qaurter the swells and turn into the breaking waves at the last second, cutting the power as you fell off the back of the wave and then gunning it to climb the back of the next one. My buddy said he would drive for a while if I was tired and I told him you couldn't pry the wheel from my hands. Funny thing was that as we crossed the channel the weather got better and better until at Naples there was no wind at all.

Reggie, Thanks for the come back on the radio on wen. Sorry to hear about your engine troubles. We tried to raise you on the radio in the afternoon but I think you guys had already headed in. We heard the CG talking with you as we motored in. They got on station with you while we were still about 3 miles from your position. Thats a good point about fuel filters. My boat is a diesel also and I think I will make sure that I have not used the last of my fuel filters on the boat and that I have the right tools to do the change on the water.

Dragon,
Check your Grounding Bus Bar where all your ground wires connect. Connections can get crappy and faulty grounds can really play havoc with your electronics and your mind.

Oneida B, Mike (and others)
That's exactly why we turned our old 24ft radon around last sunday at 3:30am, 37 miles out when we hit about 20 knots / wind.
Too far from home to take any chances.
Glad you are home safe and sound to fish another day.........and give me a taxi out to my boat in the morning.

Mike, glad you made it to fish another day. An amazing story, and yes it sounds like angels got you home. Wow from fishable to Victory at Sea in a few hours. On the same note to all diesel boaters. Really rough water can stir your tank up, and the sh*t growing on the top of your tank. It will clog your filter, and reduce the performance from your engine greatly. Pack an extra, two if you are a volvo like me. ACTUALLY IT IS AN EASY THING TO CHANGE REGULARLY. I learned this lesson the hard way yesterday, and hope nobody else has to. I am happy to see we all agree to talk and share #'s with each other. As we all get older, and our minds crumble backwards into simpleness. Let's remember what we learned in preschool: Talk nice with each other. Share with each other. Make friends with the people that treat you right.
And maybe a nap after lunch if we are lucky.

The ocean today was ROUGH, to say the least! I was out on the Pricess with Brad and the crew and had a go at trying to catch a tuna! Needless to say I didn't get one but we got 1 20# Bluefin, 12 Albacore (biggest about 25#) and 1 Skipjack. We caught the bulk of the fish on jig strikes with a few on bait. The bite was better after noon when the sun started to show a little! I'd say we caught the majority from 34 to 40 miles out! Blackie, good thing you stayed home! I had a good enough time but it was slim pickens!

Wow, Mike's story reminds me of a trip that I made a few years back. Went way SW and the wind kicked as we got there. It was a slow ride home.Glad you made it back. The Stormsurfing site says Tues and Wed of next week will be best.No fish is worth going thru that, keep it safe guys.
What boat were one Mike? was it a deep V ?

Was at Jalama for the last two days an the perchies were suicidal....yesterday hot and glassy on the beach with a big west wind bump and every 15 minutes a solid overhead 10 wave south set, hiked almost to Conception and it was all you wanted...and this morning it was blowing with whitecaps everywhere out of the NW...with a major fog wall off the boathouse up towards Arguello...
Aiming at Monday...Morro

Glad you made it in, Mike and crew- that's why I don't like those trips down to the 1908 when it's an iffy call - 80 miles home, straight into it, can change your perspective on off-shore fishing - as you said

A few fish are not worth it - be smart and default to safe, so you can live to fish again !

Mike: That is the worst I have heard in a long time, with survivors ! We are all glad for the happy ending ! I hope that all of the guys and gals that read this site read your account and appreciate it. "Sailors take warning"

Now for our local forecast:
The forecast is not as bad as Mike's actual conditions but one never knows. Right now there is nothing in the forecast for a week that is less than 15kts except monday till about 2pm which is 10kts. Tuesday and wednesday look like gale conditions.

So here is the long and short of our Albacore trip on 9/24/09.We decided to go out on Monterey based on the weather report out of Morro on Wednesday, 15 to 20k with gust even more and dense stupid fog. Santa Cruz was 5 to 15k. So due to the fact we missed the last couple of beautiful days and bites to work, we went!!! Launched at 3 a.m to go get bait, signed read no bait.Great, no problem, hitting jigs, we have lots!!! Out of the harbor, punched in hot spots in GPS and off we go in 5 to 10k wind, making 18 to 20 miles an hour. 5 minutes into trip GPS module go out, GPS not responding, no problem, I have a second unit on board and radar to boot.We are on our way, high hopes!! Get 45 miles out and sun is coming up, 5 to 10 wind, put lines in, birds every where and troll to local hot spots, Radio just screaming with double tripples, 15 on board by 8 am. We got nothing!!10 am and we are now in the mad zone, wind is now 10 to 15, but verry fishable. Lines go off and we put 7 in the box like now! Wind is now steady 15k, 58 milkes from home, 7 in the box 11:30. Head for home and troll in.Wind now 18 plus, 53 from home, pull all lines but one, wind 20k now and we can only manage 8 to 10, drop one line in, what the heck, if we have to run at troll speed, the lets give it a shot, pick up 7 singles on the way in. We have gone 5 miles and now the wind is 20 plus and swell is building. It is 50 to port and 1:00 pm. Pull the one line and give it all we can to make time, maybe 10 miles an hour. Now 19 miles from port 4:30, Huge swells, short intervals, 30k and bulding!! I want my Momma!!!Getting dark now 12 miles to go and only making 3 miles and hour. Look to the left and a huge F**KING swell coming at us, turn into it give is some gas and it breaks on us, water all over, out board makes a hug groan as we are push down, second swell rolls on us and we are side ways and I think we are rolled, perfect storm goes through my mind, we are F, but our prayers are answered we are alive!!!, but still 12 miles from shore! Hail Coast Guard and give possition and tell them it is hell out here and if they do not hear from us, tell all we love them!!!We work for the next 3 1/2 hours to go 11 miles. I have never been so scared in my life. So, we made it in with 14 Fish, three badly soiled shorts, and a BIG Thanks To the Man up stairs, by the grace of god we made it through. 26ft boat, experienced crew, hard top or we would have been washed away.( B.A. Stewart get a hard top!!) Guys it is not worth taking a chance for a few fish, hug your kids, wife and stay home when their is a hint of bad blow out there, just not worht it and make sure you double check your euiptment. The sea is no place to find out what you are made of. Happy to be alive, thanks to God and every Angel that was on my boat with me!
The crew on the Onieda B!!!!

had a chance to fish the giants off the coast of new jerseys gulf stream. chunking off the mud hole with ballons drifting some baits, wieghts on others and some just drifting. we were hooked onto a quick release ball and 12/0 reels when suddenly i watched the balloon sink releasing a bubble and grab the rod. people throwing harness on me, folks cutting the anchor line boat started and we were under way. all this in 4-5 seconds only to miss him on the strike. maybe i was 21 years old and still recall it 30 years later. i know they better get them fish on ice if they want to get a good price from the japanes. them folks are pickey. i agree with both of our land stranded( till better weather) fisherman. lets all have a working radio and we should help other boats with a good reflector. any more then that i get a kick out of the @#$% talk

Sorry if that bothered you. Mabey I'll just use ch 69 from now on...kind of like that number better, 68 just seemed like I was one short of a good game. Anyhow, I was not kidding about the quality\sound of your radio transmission, it hurt.Oh by the way the "son" part... Mom never did tell me who my dad was, you may owe me a lot of money.

i've been doing this a long time, son...i've never failed to call in others to a hot bite...many here can vouch for me on that.

Hey John, we were having a good time and letting others know when and where we were getting hooked up. There were times of up to 30 min. no one caught anything. If this bothers you so much, change the channel. Actually, you might want to check your radio. Every time you transmitted it sounded like a racoon in a meat grinder. Had to squelch you out a few times. Funny, just thought of something. I did hear you a few times but never heard any usefull info from you. Did you benifit at all from us calling numbers or are you just a fish magnet with no time to help others?

my take on radio fish:

it's pretty funny listening to the same guys talk on the radio all day long....seems like every time somebody farts out there they can't wait to jump on the radio and report it..tell me, if everyone seems to be catching, is it really necessary to report every time you get a single or double jig strike?

one more thing...it's not all that smart to cross the bow of a jig boat...jig boats don't stop and we are usually working at the stern...what do you think is going to happen if you get a strike and stop while crossing my bow?

lastly...most of the sportboats out there need to BUY A RADAR REFLECTOR !..when it gets choppy, it's hard to tell the tuperware boats from the sea clutter

Daniel- Those giant bluefin were caught out on the 1908 last week. Yeh right. Can Only Wish! Actually they were caught out on the Grand Banks. Those guys had 7 bluefin in four days. All right at 800-lbs. We actually had those size bluefin around our local Northern Channel Islands many years back. The seiners made short work by using aircraft to spot their BL trails at night. And like Harrell said, these fish are sold for serious coin in Japan. Pretty sad. But they are around. We had a double on bluefin the other day about 45 miles offshore. Only landed one, a 25-pounder caught on a cedar off our downwind outrigger.

Looking at running out of Morro on Sunday on my dad's boat. I was wondering what time the bait dock opens and if they will have bait? Hello Harrell. My dad, stepmother and I will be heading up either late Saturday or early Sunday. Will you be out? If so give us a hail. Ruth Marie, Ch 68

i think Harrell was correct in his fishing manners and that the jig fishing will soon turn to more bait stops. i've experinced both the good and bad of giving numbers w the private boating fleet. we have read about having to chunk to attracted bait fish after the jig strike but to hold them takes a little more then what most of us carry in a 1 scoop tank. i ve been on good stops where i've called in boats names to the numbers( good reason to know one another on this board), we would chum litely a hundred yards apart with the fish working all of us at diffrent times. seems to hold them in the general area. i concider it a private party when boats names are called in to a bait stop. as to other boats coming, do as the fishmaster says, join us in the general area,we all want to share fish but troll on the outside, dont fish my chum.

Steve;
I will be posting my take on the weather about 7pm each evening for a while . The computer models are updated about then each day. That is the best look at the next day's weather when combined with the buoys early in the am.

Mike;
Those fish in Tokyo would be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Greetings,
Another important thing to remember when running to numbers...you don't need to run right up on them! I usually stop at least a mile or two short and begin trolling..especially if you don't know the guy. The fish are usually in the general area and not just in one spot.
So what's the latest on the weather Harrell. I see Sunday/Monday just changed from 5-15 to 10-15. With all the wind all week...I'm sure it will be pretty sloppy out there. At least they are in another 20 miles.
lat,
steve
P.S. I still want to see a pic of the yellowfin off our coast!!!

The guys out of Monterey, Santa Cruz are great about giving out numbers and when they do look out because their are many more boats up there. If I was on a bait stop, gave out # and had someone run up my back I would not be a happy camper. This may be why some don't want to give out their #. Having said that I hope to get out early next week and if I find fish I will shout out my #'s. Good luck to all.

When we use to fish albies alot in the 90's everybody shared numbers. Just be polite when you run to a guy thats cool enough to call you in, that's more or less his spot, don't troll up his transom or run through his bait, ie. behind him while he's bait fishing bait. On a slow day of fishing we found the fish, did'nt see too many boats, put out the numbers and the horizon lit up with boats coming our way, no biggie, but now I'm having to dodge a 60 ft. six pack boat, he was running me off my spot, and I mean I had to go 10 knt's or more so he wouldn't hit me, what a jerk ! I'm just glad he dosen't fish anymore. Good manners= good fishing= good times.
