The only thing I can figure out about tuna Sun. vs. Mon. is that it must be political. Sunday was great, we picked off all the liberals (suckers). They bit and swallowed everything. This leaving mainly the conservitive tuna that knew the difference between jigs and real bait fish. Remember, keep your sense of humor. |

For what it's worth on the spread...TJ and I fished Sunday when it was pretty easy to get fish. Most of our troll fish that day hit the root beer broomtail feather, the others hit the black and purple cedar plug. The naked cedar went untouched. The week before virtually every troll fish on my boat hit the black and purple feather. On Sunday nothing hit the black and purple feather. On Sunday the root beer was always in the same place...port corner and I set the spread close to the boat....in fact, we trolled by a big paddy around noon and I actually watched about a 25lber race out from next to it and charge the broomtail, watched him blow up on it, too. Also, last week the dorado cedar plug was hot, this Sunday, nada. We also had way more bait fish Sunday than last week. Very interesting SST yesterday.... |

Steve...those are good questions, I have no idea why albacore do what they do, and I'm sure others ask themselves the same questions. Some days you can't keep them off the jigs no matter the spread and colors, other days it's tough. My opinion is that boat pressure puts them down, and also that after a day like Sunday, the schools have been scattered and dispersed, or broken up by so many fish caught,so the packs are usually smaller the next day and confused. Especially after looking at the SST's tonight, that area was small and the fish were trapped there..If all the guys would have had that picture Sunday night you can bet you would have found unmolested fish and had a chance for some epic baitstops..FYI I'm no expert in trolling for tuna, but I always run bright colors on one side of the wake, a plain cedar down the gut and dark on the other side. Sunday I kept them close 3rd or 4th wake back as I wanted to get bait fish on the slide....it worked. On our 1st jog stop they hit a jethead mexflag, and a boatline with a mean joe green..30ft back. We picked up 5 more baitfish on that stop, by popping an eye out of a dean or chove before tossing them out, they swim in circles(no eyes) and brought fish to the boat, then we kept them there by leaving 1 or 2 or 3 hooked up bait fish hanging all the time, while hooking all we can and still chumming crippled baits out constantly, we have 5 bait rods all hooked up, rotated in to the boat one at a time, gaffem, get the hook and pin another HOT dean on with a littelweight send en to his demise, if they won't leave the boat pop him off and replace a hot bait and if it swims hard away form the boat, he is toast for sure...Our second stop was the same except it was single fish on a black and purp jig and through lot of chumming with crippled baits and sendin some hot deans back on the slide it was hookup for every one,,,we got 6 baitfish on that one stop, and we lost two as well, another boat trolled into our zone, I asked him to cut his power and slid in, but I did not see any hookups for them, the fish were under our boat, we hooked 2 more on bait before it fizzled out...We had a dozen on 2 stops plenty of fish for us..so headed in after that, Mark Pure Adrenalen know his shit when it comes to trolling, so does Jimmy Deathwish, and Seeker..Jimmy...these guys load up on the troll concistency, ask them what they think about trolling spreads in off bite conditions......Mike |

Tuna fishing question: OK...we all know there isn't much to tuna fishing on days like Sunday, but what about Monday. Something definitely changed and the fish were not biting as well. Why? Full? Feeding on different bait? Change in barometric pressure? What? In addition, I'm curious about my spread and getting multiple hookups. Recently I've been trying to fish all the same color (all purple/black or all zuccini) to try and get more multiple hookups. However, I still fish a cedar plug way back (150-200'). On Monday we ended up getting all of our troll fish on that cedar plug and didn't get one jig strike on the other lines (even tried dropping them way back too). So I'm curious if my spread leads to more singles...or if I wouldn't have caught anything if we didn't have the cedar plug way back. I'm thinking that if the fish come up and don't hit the short lines...they might hit the "wiskey" line and thus I get a bonus fish that I would not have caught otherwise. Or, my concern is, do they come up and see the lone "wiskey" lure as the weak buffalo and hit only that one? I would think that the lures are so far apart that wouldn't be the case...but I'm not sure. What do you guys think? thanks, steve |

That SST sure explains a lot, Harrell! Very interesting to see. I can see how we punched through to the backside of the break in relatively short order and it sure corresponds with the temp break we metered at about 14nm from Morro. Also, right before we hit that break coming back in while on the troll, we circled a big school of what appeared to be Bonito that were busting a big bait ball. They were just on the warm water (63*) side of that 14 nm break. Wish we had that shot yesterday morning! |

MEETING; Set it up Steve with Steve. I'm in and will round up some of the others. Was about to send an e-mail but will wait. Weather; Andrew, sunday not so good maybe monday tuesday. SST; anyone that fished sunday/monday should really check out the SST today. Send me an e-mail if you need a copy. Bonito vs. skipjack; Bonito has stripes on the top, above the lateral line and skipjack has stripes on the bottom, below the lateral line thus the pic is bonito. Which tastes much better than skipjack so they tell me. Sweetpea: Mike you are being too modest ! Don't know why we lost contact. I tried a couple of times to raise you. Maybe we were transmitting at the same time. Last but not least: If you are melting lead that has been used then use a propane torch to melt it a little at a time before putting it in a pot. |

Greetings, I emailed Steve McGrath about what happened. He is the Harbor Manager and a former student. He is a very nice guy and I believe he wants to do the right thing. Anyhow, he asked me to post this for him. Sounds like he wants to meet some of us who have complaints. I'd definitely be up for a meeting...anyone else? All: I got e/m yesterday from Steve Hendricks and Chad Merrill – thanks to both of you for contacting me directly; I’m out of town, so told Steve and Chad I would talk with them next week. Today, someone suggested I jump on this board and read. Now it seems like another option might be for a get together in the new meeting room so we can figure this all out. Are you all up for participating in some constructive dialog so all can use and enjoy our port? I can always be reached at stevem@portsanluis.com and this e/m address is on our web site, portsanluis.com Steve McGrath Harbor Manager |

Tim, it was a 15 pound downrigger ball, hollow with salt water inside. I put my hands over my face, turnd and ran when I heard it start whistling. It exploded splashing my arm and back of my head. There is still lead above my garage door and on my rain gutters. That was the day I decided to quit making lead jiggs. |

Don't worry Jim, sunlight through the ceiling in a kitchen should add thousands to the value of your house. I've been canning in my kitchen, even with multiple cookers, because it's really easy to dial in just the perfect temp on a gas range and decreases the chance of a runaway cooker. 100 minutes at 10# pressure is what the recipe calls for that I'm using. No problems.......yet! Anyone going down to Port to check out the Tsunami? 9:07 is what I read for PSL to see it. |

We fished Monterey last Monday. After a wide open tuna bite we decided to head back to Ventura. We were on our way home about 10 pm and were feeling sleepy. Decided to stop at Avila/Sleep on the boat/check the weather in am. If a good forecast would go out and if not continue driving home. Spent the night sleeping on the boat after parking in a boat spot. Weather bad in am so had breakfast at Cats and came home. It would not make sense to not allow out of town fisherman to spend the night. Also 30 bucks seems a little steep to launch a 25 foot boat. Everyone was nice to us including the harbor staff. |

Mike, pump was already in, just waiting for upgraded control sytstem and cables. I got tired of banging on the shift lever to get the throttle only button to pop back out. lube didnt help, central core assembly inside old style merc 3000 "clasic" no longer avail in merc catalog and the new shifter takes upgraded? cables that they give you "free" when you get the new control there are 14variants of the sidemount control with "lawyer" switchs +tilt n trim and squeeze control. I can shift the boat from the engine compartment if needed but just want it to be new again. BTW this is the second Merc control box to go bad, first replaced under warranty 12yrs ago. If any of you have a spring return pushbutton Merc Commander3000 or classic3000 shifter watch out, if you have either of the old style where the whole lever pulls out or the kind that the knob pulls out you are likely fine as those last nearly forever. there was a recall on some of them but mine was the recall replacement upgrade . now I get the upgraded upgrade. part has to come from fon du lac wisconsin, should be here before friday, istall fri or sat? hope your crew gets over ordeal soon. If not there are some true salts that could use a tuna position on a 26 WAC Striper. |

Evening All Been trying to recitify the problems down here the last couple days and hopefully we'll have some kind of resolve soon. Had a talk to one commisioner and waiting reply from 2 others. This is a real problem in my eyes seeing that I've been trying to repair the bad feelings from alot of you on past issues with Portside's hours and attitudes. This being said I'll be down here every day at 5:30 or earlier as LFT dictates. I'm sorry you all from MB are bitter about this harbor and the way it works but, a few of us are trying to make this a more fisherman friendly place. Dealing with a Government body as the harbor is a slow process but, hopefully we can get this rectified soon. Good Fishin Marty . |

Harrell I tried to call you several times, not sure if you heard us...you were heading in last I heard you on the radio...We did not outsmart anything!!...Doug at Virgs had killer bait, that was the reason we did OK, and that we stayed till dark...We simply fed them alot of chum and had some great hookbaits....We were all alone as well, so they were not too skittish staying with the boat..The fish decided to play some that's all..Still tough fishing compared to what we heard from Sunday.... |

TGTBTU Good , Monday Jim parked boat slightly outside lines at the pier entrance to unload fish for cleaning, everyone said hello and no one cared, several harbor vehicles went by without a second look. Situation was reasonalble and safe but others have been hassled lately for just momentary fish unloading. Bad, my younger brother unhitched his 2PWC trailer and parked separately from tow vehicle so he could fit in one weekend. Someone wrote him a citation for the "unattended trailer". He is PO 'd.,I think he explained to someone on phone and they told him to send a letter in and it was highly likely to be remedied, but no promisses. I dont know the resolution. Uglies, Sea lions sinking boats, Sea lions on Docks,Sea Lions on Nav buoys, reports of equipment theft off of moored boats, security guards equating waiting boaters with campers. |

The annoyance isn't new at PSL to me at least. Its cost someone a bit, especially Fat Cats cafe ,as I no longer gather my Family or crew there early unless I'm already on the water. about 7 years ago I got to PSL one night to be first in line so we could prospect albies at first opportunity. the lauunch was going to open some time between 5&6am , there was almost no one anywhere around. I pulled up to the approaches to the launch and stopped where anyone could get through if needed. I set the boat up, un-did the tie downs had a beverage, plotted my prospecting courses, organized the deck gear, listened to NOAA radio and yawned, it was about 1am. went into the cabin to read and maybe nap.never got that far. at maybe about~ 1.30am, a night time "security guard" type watchman (black coat, flashlight and radio)comes over and tells me there is no "camping" without filling out a slip and putting the money in a box somewhere and parking in an RV space over yonder(diablo gate area). I was still up and had the cabin light on and told him I was not "Camping" but just waiting to be launched,-- whenever they opened. He would have none of it, and said if I was in the cabin, or sleeping anywhere, including the car, he would cite me. I was about to call everyone & drive to Morro Bay and never return. Instead I stayed up on deck and tied leaders, listened to radio, read a book until one of my crew arrived at about 4am and went and catnapped while he watched out for the watchmen until other boateres and Del arrived and put us in. I figured that maybe We had just run into a Barney Fife moment, and that it couldnt possibly be that boater unfreindly all the time. I just made it a policy to launch the day before when possible, or eat breakfast and rest in santa maria or nipomo or 5cities area before going to PSL. There has got to be a better way I thought. They must have had problems with one or 2 people boat camping in the parking lot that weren't boating.? Anyway, at the end of last year they restriped the parking lot, turned it into a parking free for all that gave no consideration to the fact that it is "PORT" san luis and awaited the busy season. well that season arrived in late june and early july . No dedicated marine parking, touristts traffic jambing themselves into a clusterflub of epic proportions, boat trailers parking all the way down by the union oil/calpoly pier. in a couple cases the trailer parker was also the skiper and the boat tied up the basin for what seemed 30 minutes while the skipper hiked back to the basin after parking. that seemed to give them a wakeup call, the harbor manager or someone sane authorized at least a minimal amount of trailer parking and things seemed a bit better. Now I hear they are at it again. Rvs and boats can both be accomodated, they need the RV revenue but they might as well close the port operations down and change the name if they dont have any small boat traffic. yes they seem to favor RVS and they dont seem to understand the dynamics of a harbor at times but they do listen sometimes. Write letters, go to harbor commission meetings, complain, suggest win win improvements, compliment them when they do something right or just use morro bay. I prefer PSL for southern voyages, pleasure boating and moorings, and morro for midnight to 4am launches and NW alby runs but its a waste of fuel and time for me to go to morro otherwise. sorry to hear the night shift at psl is boored or missdirrected again. lets figure a way to deal with this |

I will always support Marty, Del, and Deke as well, would like longer hours during weekend tuna season though... I love PSL been fishing here my whole life. a few weeks back when I went out to support Marty and Del at the harbor commission meeting an old timer fisherman said he has been fishing here since the 50s brought up to the commission the boat parking issue and new design that sucks and is not boater friendly, I hate the new parking too..., Drew the present said he was aware of the issue and would work on it, He said as a fisherman he could relate... I just herd last week that if I park my boat trailer in a spot without a truck that is a ticket, I can kind of relate to that as about a month ago a trailer that was unattached to a truck blew in the wind and hit my truck, but in the past i have had my wife drive me to port and after launching the boat drop off the trailer so she could have the truck, I never thought it was illegal until I herd of someone getting a ticket for it last week... Most times the harbor patrol are cool but I see what everyone is saying here and I agree, this is a fishing port and not a RV ground, the meetings are open for public comment, maybe we need to all come in and comment on the issue or get on the agenda some way. |

Marty, daily i read of post proving your committment to the harbour with class service, un-matched at any port. i am trying to solve a problem where the only villian is too many cars. i think we all can still enjoy our resource if we deal with the limited space. which of the following users don't require having a car, employees of the port, merchants, fisherman or tourist. can we say that much of the problem has been increased since avila was rebuild into a world class destination with many new hotels, stores, and diners. can we look here for some of that revenue to our seasonal overcrowing. is there any location that a parking lot could be built near avila( i see folks parking clear out on the road to walk to beach)and a shuttle be used during the summer months for our visiting friends. trolleys are quite an attraction and my kids used them while camping at morro strand to get to morro bay without using a car. perhaps some port employees would enjoy riding this shuttle ( remember they work for us). is there any unical money left? am i wrong thinking that people would enjoy riding and not parking. |

For sake of clarity...I was @ the hartford pier fri. And there was a full size chevy pick up with a large trailer with 4-6 wet bikes on it the large ones parked on the pier...It said somthing/somthing jet ski adventures on the camper shell window. he was there quite awhile... I saw them lift 1 of the wet bikes out of the water on the little boom hoist... Seamed a little hair ball... Then they went over and got in line at the hoist...Seamed funny to me? Why go to the hoist when they looked like they where taking the last wet bike out of the water... Maybe just a dry run?? Thats must be what the Harbour patrol was refering to...Thats it... |

Had a great time, Jim & Matt! What a difference a day makes but those long "in betweens" were well worth it. Not often can one waterski back to the bay from 20+ miles out after 5 pm! Water conditions were unreal! |

Another great day on the water yesterday on the Cracka with Jim G and crew. Sure wish I could feather the throttle back on my boat to back the speed down to a comfortable 38mph. The fish were nice grade yesterday. found some tiny squid in the fish which might explain the slow bite on bigger jigs. Hope the guys thinking about running today looked at the buoy, 31mph wind on top of 9ft swell. gonna be nasty in the afternoon.

I will continue to launch at PSL and support MARTY 100%. This issue with the parking needs to be resolved for the people that want to come the night before. In all the years I have been doing this I have not seen or heard of a problem until I was told not to park there last Sat. night the Harbor Patrol said a trailer with jet skis had abused the parking rules so that is why there is a problem. |

Not too far out of practice Mike! 5 fish hooked up at the same time...one on the jig, 4 more on the bait rods...all 20+ pounders, including a 20# bluefin and to land them all....luck of the draw? I have my doubts... |

If all these are new rules, we need to know who and why voted to enact them. The harbor commision is an elected group that can be voted out. Maybe Drew our fishing commisioner, who I know reads these posts, can enlighten us on what's going on down there. It's time to take back what's ours. Sitting in your boat waiting to launch isn't camping! What happened to the boat only parking spots.Drew, please let us know as you are our elected represetative. |

Been towing to MB for 15 years. Yep, we scratched up our half dozen Tunas. Always a pleasure fishing with the good folks on the central coast. WT/Hell happened to PSL? I was told not to launch by several peeps as it is not the friendly place it used to be. |

Sounds like a late bite...16 mi. tuna how awesome...Isnt it time for a weather change? Santa Ana type conditions and sunshine. And wfo Tuna fishin... My point was we need both ports badly. If eather closed the parking and launching would be NUTZ!!! And the people that run and work the landings need our support too... For the same reason Mike pointed out. People in power DON"T GET IT!!! And if we dont resist the agression... Its going to be like being the kid who got pantsed and his lunch money stolen. Everyday... Thell keep doing it...Always remember these people are public servents they work for us...You can point that out if need be...But if its against the law, expect the ticket...I think we need another marina...With a 10 boat wide, ramp, slips, Bars, Dancing Girls!!! OH SORRY Its the Tuna Fever... Be carefull what you wish for...Glad you guys caught Tuna again today...Life is GOOD...In SLO |

Left Morro Harbor at about 1:30pm today, hit the numbers at about 2:30. Nothing until about 4:30, then a double jig strike turned into 5 bait fish. At 5:30 a single jig stop turned into 6 more baitfish.... lost 5 fish today as well during those 2 stops!....one nice bluefin on bait as well...fish were from 20 to 34 lbs. I think we were around 14 and 15, can't remember, 2 jig boats nearby.. I'm out of practice!....Sweetpea (Mike)....Nice to hear your voice Jimmy! |

Mike Manning funny you should say what you did. I don't think PSL knows what they are. I fish and R.V. last yr I went to spend the night. I was lucky to get a spot. I was told the first 12 spots were reserved for fishermen. This year I wanted to RV and fish from my kayak on labor day and every spot was closed to R.V.s that was on Friday. So we drove down to PSL put the skiff in to travel to mooring. Went and had a sucky day of fishing. Came back to PSL and it was opened to R.V.s and I was pissed because I couldn't spend the night there before we went fishing. I was told the first time we went to PSL the yr before by harbor patrol. That the reason the first places were for boats was that Fish and Game gave them a grant and didn't want to run a camp ground. So PSL was modified for the fishermen as they paid for it. SO complain to D.F.G because they are to cater to fishermen first that is what the grant was for. Hope this makes since |

We ended the day with 6 albacore 25-30 lb and 2 bluefin 20-25 lb. My first ever bluefin Same area as everyone else. Big Thank you Marty for fueling me up so early in the morning. Thanks to the crew of the "Matitude" sp? for the ride to the mooring in the morning and to the gentleman back at the parking lot for the ice. The last two fish (a bluefin and albacore) came at 18 mi. from the rock. |

All the talk about leaving skin on your fish has got me thinking about a question that's been on my mind for some time. From what I have gathered by reading the regs., the daily bag limit AND the possession limit for rock fish is 10 fish. So here's the question...if the possession limit is 10 fish, then how can fish and game issue you a multi day permit to allow you to have two limits? Even if you are on the boat for two days, it's still illegal to have more than 10 fish in your possession, EVEN AT YOUR RESIDENCE. There was talk about this law late last season, but no one brought up the issue of multi day permits and being over your possession limit. What am I missing? Jeremy P |

okay. psl may be lost to tourist and the revenue they bring ever since they rebuilt avila .i won't boccott it living within a cup of coffee away but its not friendly to fisherman. sorry to the boys that travel to fish here and drive home or have to hotel it. i can say that many of us on this site have fought hard to keep morro fisherman friendly but we know that tide is turning soon. boaters will be asked to pay for parking which we can agrue many pro's and con's but whats done is done. what i hope is that the money will be used to make it fisherman friendy. we fished morro on sunday only to find the boat wash broke and an hour wait at the fish cleaning station. come on. i am afraid the city will use the toll money to beautify the area with palm trees and copper sided toll booths for the tourist to walk about and we will be paying for a park not a parking lot. ( sorry Dave pratt, i looked again and Santa barbaras booths are made of copper). lets keep the city vilengent with our monies. |

Hey Steve ...that Hoist works great and close to a few of my fave flatty spots. Will always launch out of PSL with the skiff. The big boat was always launched in Morro ... But many many days I wished I had put in South . Running uphill in the afternoon back to the Rock can be ugly at times! Good job out there guys! Fish are still at the correct size for this time of year. When we start hearing of the 35-45 average you can expect the end to be near.....although Green Water at 8 miles in years past produced some HOGS as the Old Lady began to sing. Right Stu? |

Greetings, Well we scratched and clawed out there with everyone else. Fished from 20 to 30 and back to 20 from PSL on about a 255. Most fish came about 23-27 out. We had 4 singles on cedar plug way back. Got two on a megabait on one stop and landed one. Very different from yesterday! Ended the day with 5 nice fish @ 20#'s and 2 bonies on the inside. I'd have to say that I love PSL. I've been fishing out of there since I was 5 years old. Everytime I go out of there it brings back many fond memories...but they really are forcing us out. I'm not going to boycott it, but I'm also not going to put up with their crap anymore. Sorry Marty and Deke...you guys are awesome, but they are trying to make it really hard to fish there. Next time we'll be launching out of Morro! best fishes steve |

Weather; Tuesday and wednesday are forecast gale. Thursday down to 15 and friday maybe ok early but 15kts later in the day. What a difference a day makes. Went out for albacore today and covered all of yesterdays numbers and only scratched up 12 for two boats (5 and 7). The bite seemed to pick up after 2:30 when we were on our way in. |

Fish fillets, be carefull, I had a friend get a ticket in Morro Bay this year while fishing for rock fish and he had fillet his fish and did not leave the skin on. They also took all of his fish. So I never thought about leaving it on Tuna, but I guess we should, it is the law. That would be the shits to get the fine and loose all of your Tuna to boot! |

Mike, I second your thoughts on PSL. Launched there Sunday and the Harbor Officer was pretty ridiculous. After we got out of the water we pulled over to the fish cleaning station, parked well out of the way, not bothering anyone or hindering traffic, to simply drop off our fish so we could clean them. The officer came over with a horrible attitude and threatened to give us a "hefty fine" if we didn't move immediately. I explained to him that we would be there literally one more minute finishing dropping off the nearly 200lbs of tuna that he expected us to carry over from the boat parking area, but he was not even somewhat helpful and continued to be rude. What is it with that guy? Can you say "Power Trip" |

The question was asked: Which port to use as a staring point for temp break? You have to ask yourself..do I want to wait to get my boat in the water and wait to get it out, via port San luis? Morro Bay is my port of call. Easy in ANYTIME and easy out, plus no fee. Hands down Morro Bay. The distance from Port to the usual temp breaks compared to Morro Bay is not that much difference. I only went out of port San Luis if there was a salmon bite there. No more salmon fishing...No more Port for me. I went out of Morro Bay on Sunday and at 31 miles had two triples and one double. 09/20 numbers. |

CRACKA Acording to THE DFG section 27.65 #10 says the following QUOTE ALL OTHER SPECIES EXCEPT THOSE LISTED IN SUB-SECTION (C) OF THIS SECTION , EACH SHALL BEAR INTACT A ONE- INCH SQUARE PATCH OF SKIN. THE FILLETS MAY BE OF ANY SIZE . I doubt that any warden would enforce this , in SD all the fish are fillet out and bagged before coming off the boat , if they wanted to enforce it they could have a field day on the fleet down there, MAKE SURE THEM PATCHES OF SKIN ARE SQUARE ALSO . Hey what do you weather watchers think about tomorrow (tuesday)? do you think we'll sneak in one more day of decent conditions? Was thinkin about jumping on the queen... I fished the channel at MB on Sat for a few shorts and one class A farm job on a good one. Bait was primo - nice guys on that bait boat. Weather was great, oysters & beer dockside afterwards.... not much to complain about other than leaving a good one on the bottom. They are still there... Thanks |

PSL is not boater friendly. I arrived at PSL on SAT. evening to get in line for fishing on Sunday I was anticipating a few boats to show up for the albacore bite. I parked in front of the travellift so as not to block any parking spots. I then went to Fat Cats for dinner. As I was almost finishing dinner I saw the Harbor Patrol shining his spotlight on my boat and then get out of his truck. I paid my bill in a hurry and went to see what was up. The HP was writing me a $40 ticket for parking in the parking lot. I explained to him I have done this for over 30 years especially when there is a hot salmon bite. He said I had to move the boat from in front of the travellift I asked if it was ok to park in the designated spots the answer was no. I told him that I felt I was no longer welcome at PSL. Ticket was voided and I had to go 5 miles away to spend the night. This is not the HPs fault he was doing what he was told to do.PSL is a very very different place now from what it was and I dont think for the better. I thought it was a fishing port first then then rv camp second. So do not plan on coming to PSL the night before they do not want you. |
