Hard to believe people are talking about the season being over already. Its not even Christmas yet?

Pay little attention to the temps on Terrafin. Go fish the break .. wind does strange things after 6 days to Sat pictures.

SST;

This afternoon's SST looks very good! The water is forming back up quickly and as close as 15 miles with 60 degree temp. Much bigger plume from 35:00 to 35:30 and from just outside the 121:00 line to 122:00.

The weather looks good thru sunday, the swell will be down and tides are not a problem. Anybody know what the bait situation is ?

We are likely "in" for tuna rediscovery on wednesday&/ or thur depending on wind and crew factors.
Harrel , that explains why Cel no longer works very far offshore. At one time you could switch a phone over to analog and make calls at about 50 miles, now its tough at 10-15 some days.

What we are seeing is surface cooling from the NW winds. Give it a day or 2 now that the winds are backing off and we should see some more defined and warmer breaks. The big winds also increase the depth of mixing, so nutrients from deeper in the water column get mixed into the surface (sunlit) layer, and cause a plankton bloom. This bloom will be shorter lived and much less intense than the spring bloom. Call me an optomist, but I think we still have more fish to catch this year. Hagans is right about the colder water... it can hold. Last monday I got 5 of my 9 fish in 59.9 degree water, and they came on the troll to boot. I plan to fish weds.

FYI;

Probably a waste of time and money to put a cell booster/antenna on your boat anymore. It used to work great at 50+ miles. But now the cell providers measure the distance (by time to send/receive) to you and if over 20 miles = no service and doesn't matter how much signal you have.

Blackie,
Do not give up the ship yet, 58 degree water late in the season is still good. The llarger fish hang on, so you may not catch as many, but they could be toads. The only thing is they do not ususally hit jigs like the smaller ones, have to look for meter marks , birds, and kelp paddies, then chunk bait and chum and wait. The only thing is we do need some cleaner water than what is out there now.

jeff as an ex paint baller i can say yes you can use a wrist rocket or slingshot but im not sure you will get enough velocity or have enough accuracy like you would with a quality gun also dont buy cheap balls they will break in your barrel and you will spend more time cleaning than shooting.also most paintball guns have the ability to change the velocity of your shot so you can really really whack em if ya want we used to be able to freeze the balls but i do believe they put anti freeze in them now. Darby id be more than happy to sit in a lawn chair by the receivers you supply the paint and a twelve pack and leave the rest to me

2007 Crestliner 1650 (16-1/2') sport angler - NEW

I have a brand new crestliner aluminum 16-1/2' sport angler model - it is the winshield model, with a 50 hp merc, electric down-riggers, and a fish finder. It is a 2007 model, but has only been to the lake trout fishing twice in two years - it has less than 10 hours on it - so it is just like new. The original purchase price was over $15K. I am looking for $8K or best reasonable offer. I do not want to put this on a lot on consignment, unless I have to. Contact me at 805 441-5702 - Jim

Darby, I love it, sign me up. Do the Tom Sawyer thing. I, as well as others, will buy the "rounds" from you, maybe rent the paint gun for an hour or so, and just have fun while providing you & others a service. Also, had to go to the dump (Cold Canyon) & saw two guys with 4-5 falcons. Talked with them a bit and found out they are hired to use the falcons to control the seagulls. There was thousands of the flying rats years ago but now few are seen due to the falcons. I will chip in on a monthly fee to hire these guys and the falcons to rid Morro's water front of these rats. PLUS it's bitchin to watch a seagull get hit by a bird of prey screaming in at mach 10!

This is from this morning's Tribune.

Surf and sea report

Moderate-gale to fresh-gale-force (32 to 46 mph) northwesterly winds along the Northern and Central California coastline have produced 9- to 11-foot northwesterly (310-degree deep-water) sea and swell (with a 4- to 12-second period) along our coastline this morning.

This northwesterly sea and swell will continue at this height and period through this afternoon, decreasing somewhat tonight.

Note: This combined northwesterly sea and swell heights will be higher at the offshore marine buoys.

This northwesterly sea and swell will decrease to 5-to 7-feet on Monday, becoming a 3- to 5-foot northwesterly (290-degree deep-water) swell (with an 8- to 11-second period) on Tuesday.

A 3- to 4-foot northwesterly (300-degree deep-water) sea and swell (with a 5-to 13-second period) will develop along our coastline on Wednesday and will continue at this height and period through Saturday.

Arriving from the southern hemisphere:

Today’s 2- to 3-foot southern hemisphere (195-degree deep-water) swell (with a 16-to 18-second period) will continue at this height but with a gradually shorter period through Wednesday.

Seawater temperatures will range between 55 and 57 degrees through Monday, gradually increasing on Tuesday through Friday.

WEATHER/SST/CHLORO

Monday 10-15 kts swell 8 ft.
Tuesday 10-15 kts am 5-10 kts pm swell 5-6 ft
Wednesday 5-10 am 15 kts pm swell 4-5
Thursday 10-15 am 10kts pm swell 4-5 ft.
Mixed up wind with nothing real bad and the swell down by wednesday.

SST
The shape of the plume is holding but temps are down 3-4 degrees. Should pop back up when the wind drops.

Chloro
A lot of green water but you would be green too if you spent the weekend with Gale. Not real green and should clean up when the wind is gone.

Prospects
Usually at this time in the season it is less jig and more bait with a lot of just sitting in a likely area, soaking bait and chunking. Also this is the time when the 60+ pounders are caught.

Yeah, we had a call Friday that "the guys on the bait boat are shooting a pellet gun at sealions." I sent Evan over to check just because, figured you didn't have your ought-6 out. Glad to hear your e-fence is working, I'll have to try ours out. I'll come take a look at yours. Got a paint ball gun for the sea lions. Legal means of deterrance according to the regs. They really don't like it! Hit 'em a couple times and they just avoid us, at least while we are around. All you gotta do is brandish the "airarms" and they go the other way.

Eric, get me a boat and a few thousand paint balls and I'll start at the back bay and chase 'em clean out'a town! Though I heard someone doesn't know the difference between a "high powered rifle" and a paint ball gun. That electric fence (also legal) is working now too.

My 2 cents on San Antonio stripers based on camping a week up there 2 summers ago.

It seems there are schooling fish which all were identical sized 22 inch hard fighting fish and then the big monsters 20lb plus that hang out in the deep water by the dam.

I think about this time of the year, Sept Oct, the schoolies are chasing the shad and will boil like crazy in different parts of the lake. It was common to see them boiling at the marina and across the lake fromn the marina but not limited just there. The boils lasted somtimes 2 minutes and sometimes 20 minutes. Mostly 2 minutes.

Definite advantage to having a boat. You may see a boil going off 1/4 mile from you and you need to hall ass to it to catch a bunch of stripers.
If they happen to boil where you are on shore, you can easily catch them from shore. It was fun sprinting from the campsite down the shoreline with pole in hand to get to a boil when they were all of a sudden going off. When they are boiling you can cast into the boil with a set of car keys and a hook and catch fish. I did pick up lead heads, white with red trim at the marina and they worked great. A cast master which alows you to launch to the middle of the boil worked well also.

I have heard that the method to catch the big guys is to fly line chovies deep in front the damn at night. I did not try this as it was to easy and fun to chase the boils of fish around the lake. I do believe there are weeks when the fish are boiling and weeks when they are not. Worth a phone call to the marina or to anyone that has been to the lake in the last weeek.

Eating: I too am not a fan of fresh water fish but we did clean these stripers and they were really good. Made great fish & chips. It is very important to clean off all the blood line stuff found right under the skin. The fish will be very gamey if you do not, but will be tasty with out it. Has anyone been up there lately and seen boils?

Is this the time of the year when they are in or does it matter?
And do they allow you to fish there, is it any better in a boat .

Full moon maybe kept the perch off the chew at Goleta yesterday, and the water was as crystal as it gets, thought there would be corbina for the first time in a while but no....But the FULL SUN brought out the nuggets! Amazing scenery with UCSB back in session...Ms. Mackey would be in heaven!!!

Paul, the guy to see is Bill at Coast Electronics. He travels to most of the companies and state fleet that need radio service. Bill is the guy! I installed a new antenna once and could not get the performance I once had. Took the boat to Bill (call ahead to make sure he knows you will be coming in),and Bill showed me how he tested everything and explained my error. I can not say enough nice things about Bill.

thanks eric. if you can get it up and running the amount and restrictions are workable for me. thanks for the give and take.
BLACKIE stripers at san antonio are much like a bonito bite. i sit in the middle of the lake out side of northshore and watch for the birds or crashing fish and start up and run to a giant slide throwing surface minnow plugs or small plastic lead heads. when the bite is off you can patrol through the house boats and find boiling fish to throw on. when they come up againist the bank bait will be push upon shore with fish in 4" of water. yes trolling or soaking bait( bring sardines from deke or dip net shad at the docks. it gets WFO.

And on top of all that, Eric has always taken the time to post on here. Back in the day when fish were within 20 miles, he was on here talking safety. Who knows how many Tri-Hulls, Bayliners and House Boats turned in a Float Plan or decided not to run because of his advise.
I know his office encouraged Float Plans in the past .. and gladly accepted them for your own safety. Knowing that someone knows exactly where you are offshore is a comforting feeling.

Hugh:

I think that your interpretations are correct. Under "severe," which is what the Council voted, strictly speaking in "marinas and waterfronts" no boat or dock wash down is allowed. I take this to mean boats in the water in slips or at docks. Under the same "severe" restrictions, residents can wash their vehicles using the bucket system provided it is "non-wasteful." Unless told otherwise, I think this can apply to boat/trailer wash at the rinse down - bucket system is OK provided it is "non-wasteful," and this is what we will go with unless told otherwise.

One suggestion that I have is that you all flush your motor first, and put a 5 gallon bucket under the outboard or outdrive to catch the spilling water to use to bucket wash the boat. Also catch the water peeing out of the outboard if you can and use that as well. Anything to keep the use down to a minimum.

As for October 19, yes, that is when these restrictions take effect. Harborfest has nothing to do with it, it is all based on when the State water flow gets turned off. I think that maybe the restrictions go into effect somewhat earlier than the planned State water shut-off, but that would be to ensure that the City can get all its water tanks as full as possible before the shut-off I would presume.

Service man for the rinse down? It's the same guy you see towing broken down boats, finding accommodations for visiting vessels, servicing the commercial fleet, burying dead seals on the beach, handling complaints about kayakers getting too close to otters, trying to figure out a way to keep sealions off of docks, soaking up fuel spills, answering countless public inquiries, taking payments for use of facilities, enforcing the law on the bay, investigating reports of crimes and theft, training, and oh yeah, driving harbor patrol boats and responding to emergencies. Yes, the call has been made numerous times - to the manufacturer of the coin-op unit to try and troubleshoot it several times, then to purchase a replacement unit when it was determined that the old one was about done. Be careful what you ask for "if this was a private wash," last time I brought my truck to the self-serve coin-op wash, I ran out of quarters at $5 or $6.

I appreciate the comments and suggestions, and sorry if I get a little defensive sometimes. We have a saying in government: "no good deed goes unpunished."

We were one of the boats out today, wind was down but very lumpy. Boat named scampy picked up six and one other caught one. We had 60 degree water but just couldn't get any takers. They were caught at about about 35:15 121:20 about 24 miles out. The boat that caught one was out on Tuesday said it was alot worse weather but they caught fish at 14 miles on the way out and at 8 miles on the way in, said they caught some blue fin.

Just got home from a long day at the shop (Virg's). The Pacific Queen got in at 8:30pm tonight toting a great big goose egg but from what Fernando (deck on the Admiral who was aboard the Queen today) said didn't sound as bad in the end: They went 70 miles NORTH today for no fish so maybe they are still hanging around down here?!! I can only hope!

Full Moon .... Even the Perch were MISSING on the incoming and outgoing. Was talking to Pratt last night and we were both talking about the full moon and tuna NO BUENO!

Bait: .. tip your bait guy, been a long run since they have had this much business. And we are pretty damn lucky to have two bait boats in the area. Go down to SB and try and get a scoop of bait on a weekday! Also .... HUGE amount of bait in between A beach and Cayucos 200 yrds from the beach.

3 hours fishing for half dozen SMALL Barries and a few log smelt.

Heard a report that 6 sport boats chased tuna out of MB. It was super-snotty and not a fun day of fishing. Apparently 1 boat found a small batch of biters for 6 fish and everyone else had 0.
Sounded like a good day to stay home. Seems like the fish have definitely moved, but there was still really good water only 20 miles out.

How do you fish for them there , troll , soak bait , never caught them in a lake , caught a lot of them when i lived on a boat in the delta , But them are a diff animal, not land locked , we used to troll hair raisers and rapallas , bait was butterflyied shad , biggest fish was a 40#.
I also heard from a reliable source that the 2#crappie are on the chew at MARGARITA.
Im sure we can find some type of fish to keep us busy on a snotty weekend.

I was over at VIRGS this afternoon , the QUEEN was not in yet but when I asked GREG how they were doing he held up a BIG GOOSE EGG , sounds like the fish have moved , the parking lot had some trailers , maybe they can find them , but the weather this weekend will not be conducive to fishing , if fact Darby called off the sunday long range rock cod trip because of weather .
So looks like ill have to find something else to do sun , like perch fish maybe..
Good luck to any that try , rember BE SAFE a albacore is not worth an ass kicking or worse.

Stacy, I did not know there was another way, I have always done it this way. You can do a bunch of tuna in a very short time with a partner trimming what's left of the blood line and someone else bagging the loins.

Eric, sorry i got my teeth into this subject but having a good friend invite me fishing on a 50,000 dollar boat and can't help clean the boat urks me. I went through the recommandation by staff calling for moderate restrictions not severe. Moderate restrictions allow maraine washing if a spring loaded nozzle is used. is this true? 2nd) the state water shut down is not until oct 19th. tuna season has a problilty of being done by then. lets get it turned on. i can not buy the idea that harbour fest. has anything to do with this. if this was a private wash, a service man would have this up and running possibly in hours. has this call even been made? i hope this is not foretell of service we will enjoy when fees are enacted.

I certainly appreciate our concerns being addressed by all good people of authority at PSL and MB...I realize times are tough and the decimated fishing community cannot support the local business or municipalities (Remember no impact, LOL)

RV parking makes sense. Got any tickets lateley? I got two in the last month. Everyone needs mo money and you are the target.

We used to park in line and meet all our old friends at Cats and pack the place at 5am. 50 boats and crews waiting in line. Guess we could blame the stupid fish for not showing up.

I find it interesting to hear about the water shortage everyday, here in So Cal, (1000 oaks)yet it dose not seem to curb any new development, new strip mall, or this monster 22 acre YMCA we don't need. They are literally bulldozing mountains to fit this monolith in.

The water shortage only seems to impact fishing and boaters. There is not one wash down past MDR going south, or anywhere in SD for that matter. Makes me wonder where exactly is the water shortage happening if at all?

Filleting tuna at sea, a little tip. I was out sun. and heard alot of guys talking about rules. One square inch or more of skin is the rule. When outlining the skin to remove simply make a circular cut at the base of the tail then make another circular cut about 2 or 3 inches above that, then when you pull off the skin it will leave the lower band attached. Just fillet as normal leaving the skin tag attached and cut the end off when you get home.
