Dr Bob .... Long Time .. Hope things are good with the wife and kids.

8-15lb fish in mid October ... Not sure if I can ever remember peanuts this late in the game. Will be very intersting to see what the sat pics look like after this storm. I am ignoring ANY talk of some so called "FAT LADY" and will only listen when I hear of a 30-45lb average.

STEVE FISHMASTER
i looked back through old posts and could not find Steve's e mail. could you post that for me and others. i have limited access out here and will try to get word to him. i to have spent many of nights at the port. salmon season was a family reunion. i was just wondering if martys contract has him paying any levis per boat launched ear marked for parking ( maintance). maybe somehow we are paying for parking already? Ps. our promise from morro bay to get wash down water hasn't happened yet. seems getting a coin mechine repaired is beyond their scope of work. They give you a nickel, they give us a dime. than fine us fifty cents everytime. was looking forward to meeting some of ya, perhaps next time.

Hugh,
Hey, did you email your comment to Steve McGrath? I think those are all great ideas.
If anyone else has ideas or comments and you can't make it, you should email Steve.
I heard guys talking on the radio yesterday how they used to spend a week in PSL, but stopped after being ticketed and harassed. If anyone else has stories like that, can you please email McGrath!!! We need as much of this info out there as possible so they don't think it is just a couple of grumpy fisherman.
thanks,
steve

Ran out of MB yesturday on a 225 heading - at about 60 miles we had 61 degree blue water. trolled for a couple hours then got a double jig strike - nothing on bait. put the lines back out and went back over same area for a triple - all nice fish 18 to 25lb.

working at vandenberg tomorrow and cannot make the meeting. i was going to ask where do all the cars parked through out the day come from. are they from RV tow cars, how many cars are from harbour employee's. can they park somewhere else? how about meters of ten bucks a day and reduce the launch charge by half. From the meters MARTY would be paid the differce. we would be paying about the same but others would be paying their fair share or find other parking. REMEMBER this is a PORT. if all else fails, we do need 3 or more spaces by pier for 20min parking while cleaning fish. what a hassle dropping off fish, getting yelled at to move car only to park 200 yds away to return to birds eating the days catch. sorry guys, and thanks to the one who do make it.

Had a great day on the water. We ended up with 6 albacore up 30 pounds and 1 bluefin that went 35 pounds. We went out to 34/56 and 121/44 for the morning bite. Got a double troll, single troll and one bait, a sinlge troll. The rest were single trolls around 34/56 and 121/51. The fish would pop up in one place then another group would pop up 5 miles away. Nothing consistent but the weather was great and got better in the afternoon.

Today we got a late start rounding the breakwater at 8:30 with an excellant scoop of mixed bait. Took a 230 from the Rock for 54 mi where there was a 1.5 degree break to 62. At one time I counted 15 boats including the Pac Queen and a couple of commercials in sight. It seemed like there was no consistant bite. At 1:00 we got our only jig strike of the day, a quad no less. Boated three and lost one bait fish. Then at about 2:00 we just drifted with four fly lines out. Shortly there after all four lines took off (only two of us on the boat). Boated 3 small fish around 10 lbs. Some of the boats caught 0 and 6 was the highest count I heard except for the party boat which had 10. There were quite a few jumpers today and they came to the chum well as we had them boiling off the stern. It is very unusual to be catching small fish in October. I hope it means we will have a long season. The area that held the most sealife was at 42 mi in 60 degree water but we didn't fish it because of the reports of fish being caught out further.

warmest water temp I found was 59.7. I heard there were a few fish caught out 60 miles.

Also, Jim mentioned a "meeting" and that reminded me about tomorrow's meeting at PSL with Steve McGrath. I'll just bootleg Steve Hendrick's post from last week...

Quote: "Steve – Please post to Fish Reports for me:

Fishing/boats/parking/etc meeting in the Port San Luis conference room in the main office building (not the new building); Monday October 12 at 3:00pm. If folk would please RSVP to me at stevem@portsanluis.com I’ll know how to set up the room. All are of course welcome.

Thanks

Steve McGrath

So, who's gonna be there? I'm going to make an attempt to get there.

Jim,
Big 5 has them for $99 right now. The basic service is an additional $99/year or $149/year if you want the "Tracking" feature. The "Basic" will allow you to send the 911 message, the "Help" message, and an "I'm OK" message which is pretty much what you need. The Tracking is just sort of fluff but fun to use.

They just came out with a new unit that has one more button to allow you to program one more custom message and the new units are the usual $149 so you can save $50 if you snag one now while they're still available.

Maybe local private boaters would be interested in this idea I have had for the last few years.

Gather local experts, "Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, Kimball" at a Pizza parlor and have a meeting. A question and answere kind of deal. Remember last year when even the Pro's were caught off guard with the big swell event?

1) So a couple weeks ago Matt Blackstone (KILLER B'S) cleaned albacore all the way in, in rough weather (I am talking weather simular to a drive throug car wash). All the fillets looked 'store bought'....Today in my drive way I cleaned the fish that Dad got yesterday....It looked like a crime scene. I suck at cleaning Albacore....Maybe if we get lucky with this global warming / El Ninio I will get a few more chances at it.

2) Devil Dog, quit busting my balls. If you were my boss we would both be divorced and fired in short order....but we would drink more beer and catch more fish than any MF'rs on this site.

3) I was sitting at the harbor entrance for hours after work yesterday till Dad finally got in at 8:30 PM. I was actually on the phone with the Coast Guard when he hit the harbor entrance. I need to get information on that "Spot" eperb device. I know Tim has one and they seemed pretty cool. Too bad they can not receive messages.

Long day on the water yesterday on Mr. Mohawk's Tailchaser. Could have waterskied all the way out on the 230 heading that we took to 55 miles to put the gear in.....water temps hovered around 59.5 all day. We felt lucky to get 6 albies, maybe 8 to 16 pounds, and one bluefin on a megabait that went 26.5 after bleeding out.

It was tough fishing, one blind jig stop and the other jig stops happened when we came upon jumpers. Couple of bait fish.
Plenty of bluefin jumping around until about noon, but they would sink out quickly when we got close. So, our bft came when we saw some jumpers up off the bow, and I grabbed the megabait and went forward. Tim slid the boat up towards the boils, I chucked the iron from the bow, let it sink 4 or 5 feet, took three cranks and was stuck hard...we could see the fish hit the iron thirty yards off the boat, flash silver as it turned sideways and ripped. Great fight, and there will be plenty of bft sashimi this afternoon as we watch the Niners hopefully spank those pesky falcons.
Anyway, no fish after 1pm, and we got back to the ramp at Morro around 715.
A trip highlight happened at about 25 miles from the rock, saw a great whitey get full air twice as it was chasing some sitting birds, maybe fifty yards in front of us. Just like the Discovery Channel!
Troll fish hit purple and black yo zuri, one on the root beer broomtail, and a couple on some tiny little feathers we dragged in desperation...black and purple.

Jimmy, enough! Just so everyone knows, did I not get your "bosses boss" call you and tell you to go fishing? Oh my, what will my wife think? What will my boss think? What will my cat fluffy that sleeps all day think? Come over, have a mug of the best beer ever brewed, and I'll lend you some of my wallnuts for a while to maybe jar your memory. GO FISH!!! Also, I for one refuse to believe the season is coming to a close. Just can't get past a good begining to the tuna in 5 years, fish caught @ 19 mi. from the beach, and the fairly early and strong rain we are about to get. El Nino rocks! Screw al gore but I like the idea of global warming (the new liberal religion).I want to catch dodo's off our coast, I'll adapt to 80 degree norms instead of 78. The sky is falling, the sky is falling... Jimmy, have you hooked up the boat yet?

Going out today with Jay out of Port San Luis heading 235. Saw this report in the San Luis Obispo Tribune this morning.

http://www.sanluisobispo.com/682/story/880683.html#none

Surf and sea report:

This morning’s 2- to 3-foot northwesterly (315-degree deep-water) swell (with a 7- to 11-second period) will continue at this height and period through tonight.

A 2- to 4-foot west-northwesterly (285-degree deep-water) swell (with a 16- to 18-second period) will arrive along our coastline on Monday morning, increasing to 3- to 5-feet (with a 15- to 17-second period) on Monday afternoon and night.

Combined with this west-northwesterly swell will be increasing southerly seas late Monday afternoon and night.

Increasing southerly (prefrontal) winds will generate 6- to 8-foot southerly (185-degree shallow-water) seas on Tuesday morning, increasing to 11- to 13-feet (with a 4- to 8-second period) on Tuesday afternoon and will continue at this height through Wednesday morning.

These southerly seas will be followed by a 9- to 11-foot westerly (270-degree deep-water) swell (with an 11- to 14-second period) on Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night.

The westerly (270-degree deep-water) swell will lower to 8- to 10-feet on Thursday, further decreasing to 5- to 7-feet on Friday.

Dad fished 34/55 and 121/45 for 7 Albacore to 40 pounds. All were caught on the troll but one bait fish. He began the day trolling as soon as he hit 59 degree water but did not catch the first fish till noon when he finally hit the clean water. Picked them off one or two at a time.

I waited at the harbor entrance till almost 8:30 when he finally came cruising in. No wind, No Swell....too bad I have to work tomorrow, looked like a pond out there.

13 hours on the water, 3 tuna, one beautiful day. Just could not get them to bite. Small jet heads worked best. Fished with the rest of the pack 60 miles out on a 230. 61 degree blue water and lots of small bait. Not a bad day to end the tuna year.

Thanks Harrell, was hoping we might get a partial shot. Has anyone heard of private boaters going out today. I think I saw that Will was going to give it a try. We will be on 68 and will call out #'s if we get in to them, hope to have some other boats out there so we can get some coverage in.

Anyone caught any halibut at Port San Luis recently? I'm heading down in two weeks to give it a shot--any pointers? Would I be crazy to try from my float tube, or is the water at the harbor sufficiently calm?

Purisima was quite nice today. Bolina up the wazoo as usual. Just 2 of us onboard for 2 limits of Bolina and a couple lings. Ran in at 12:40 @ best cruise of 23.5 knots with just a slight wind ripple the whole way in. Gotta love those days when we can do that!

Harrell mentioned the regs on Salmon and that brings up something that Harry and I saw at the PSL boatwash. Just as we were pulling away from the wash, we saw a huge school of fish running inside the little bay at the launch. They ran into about 2 feet of clean water right behind the shore break wave line at Fisherman's Beach. It was a school of at least 20+ Salmon averaging about 30". They worked their way down the beach towards the Cal Poly Pier. Pretty cool sight, we thought.

We're watching the outside water as well. Would sure like to get a run in before that weather hits us.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY WEATHER

It doesn't get any better than what is promised for the next two days.

If todays reports are fairly accurate then just take a 220-230 heading out of MB watch your fishfinder for a temp break and a clean screen (no clutter). It may not be necessary to go 50 miles. The temps have came back up a couple of degrees on the buoys so the fish could be anywhere. If you see meter marks stop and soak bait.
There is a pretty intense storm coming mon-wed and we don't know what it will do to the water conditions. The next two days are an opportunity that you don't want to miss.
Even if it just a boat ride it will still be worth it.

Won't be any new SST/Chloro due to cloud cover today. But, don't let that stop you. The weather is good and all of us with the "second mouse" mentality really hope you can find some !

WEEKEND WEATHER:

Today, saturday and sunday look very good for both the inside and the outside. Rockfish will be open for another month (nov 15) but albacore are looking iffy as the first winter storm is due next week starting monday. Might even be some rain which is badly needed. We will have to wait and see if the water cleans up after the storm passes.

SALMON;
This is from the F&G site;

Ocean salmon fishing south of Horse Mountain is closed to protect Sacramento River fall Chinook. In 2010, the area south of Horse Mountain is scheduled to open for recreational salmon fishing on Saturday, April 3. There is a possibility the season will be closed by emergency action from Pacific Fishery Management Council and California Fish and Game Commission in March 2010. For additional salmon management information, please visit the PFMC Web site at www.pcouncil.org.

Nice Hali! I have caught angel sharks, got broke off by threshers, and caught wsb all near or around the AF. They will all crush your baits not to mention the resident fur bag! Met Paul @ Harbor fest, says alot that you guys fished flatties today. Still hoping that the blue water returns though.

Greetings,
Fished with Paul today on the Flyer out of MB. We headed up N for some flatties. Fished all day for 1 nice flatty...probably around 25#'s. Also had 6 short lings. Fish was caught in about 60' of water off the Ab Farm. Also hooked something decent that felt heavy, had a couple big head shakes and then went on a run when the hook pulled. got the bait back and it was totally crushed, but no teeth marks. WSB? I don't know, never caught one. Do they do that to a dine...just crush it?
Thanks for the ride Paul. Had a fun day out there with you.
Sure hope the albacore are still around.
best fishes,
steve

Wednesday, met up with Jim B jr. and Joe T. from SM Elks sportsmens Group as Crew, Launched 5:30 PSL. generous load of pinheads with a few larger Chovies and Ran @ 255degree to 42NM 15knots ,leftover chop
water temp matched temp break closely, and Color didn't blue out well until about 37NM, We Blanked on tuna, Saw no fish and heard/saw 3 Morro Bay Boats with ZIP ,and heard of PAC Ho report with 2?, WTF out.
Trolled down the line and all around for miles and then came in for some "Consolation fish" at 4pm so the Crews wives would let them go again. Weather Was far Better than forecast until 2pm then only about10-15knot irregular wind,
but downswell return was very easy. inshore Rockfish Bit fast and furious in the drift but was hard to stay on them , good evening bite but wind was really moving us home. On the way in JimB jr. Saw 1 Bonito or similar size Scombrid jump about 1 mile fromm PSL.
Note , We had 1 Jig strike in the clear water 30ft off the port wake, (All 3 of us saw the fish),
not likely alby (Smallish) but it didn't stick.
I stayed overnight on the hook and then hoisted out, refuel and await another day, maybe sat?

Did some serious lip ripping on them perch today , non stop bite from noon on ,I had my limit by 1400 so left them biting.
Fished right in front of the stairs at SANTA ROSA CREEK ,Looks like deep fried perch for dinner , from the looks of the weather the bottom fishing is looking good this weekend , but after that well you know what hits the BIG FAN , we will be out sat and sun for them bottom fish.
