Devil Dog: Although my wife does not moniter this site, I propose this challenge "if she can weld better than you, you will have to stop bringing her name up on this site....pick your poison...Arc, Mig, Tig or Oxyacetylene" Maybe some other members of this site would enjoy a good old fashioned weld off at the house next Friday....you being the guest of honor... |

Anybody FISH today? Rockfish? Halibut? Maybe just a boat ride? Let's hear about it. I cruised out to Port today on the motorcycle and saw Deke's bait dock with a partially sinking corner. Looks like the weather got him, too. Sorry to see that Deke! I say let's have a work party and help Deke fix up the dock and maybe we can get creative and make it Seal Proof while we're at it! |

WEATHER/SST/CHLORO Great SST/chloro from yesterday. The elbow still looks as good as it did and 55/45 are still the numbers. But, the wind is still relentless!! Don't see any relief in sight thru next friday. Monday might be a "fishable" day for the boats with an attitude ! |

Blackie I have been fishing Dog Beach, North Studio all the way down to 6th st. Depending on tide and water clarity. Dog Beach was impossible and unfishable today ...water was clean at N. Studio and fish were on the chew even with the amount of Sand Crabs getting tossed around. I am with Dave on the "Brine" for Albies. I do a lot of Brine's for Pork and Turkey. But when it comes to Albacore I tend to leave out the salt. They get a 2-4 hour soak in Beer, Brown Sugar, Soy ..... and then depending on the reciepe Molassas, Fresh Ginger, Liquid Smoke, Fresh Crushed Red Pepper, Wasabi, Sesamee Oil and Unagi Sauce. Play with those if you have a ton of fish and want to something different. |

I'll attest to Matt's recipe. Ate it on the water a couple weeks ago when we were fishing together and again tonight. Damned good flavor. Macked a gallon sized ziploc bag of it on the way home from Blackie's, today. Had to choke down a dinner on a full stomach of albacore or face the boot in ass from the wife. Thanks for all the help and the baggy of fishy contraband, Blackie! That stuff should be illegal. |

It was an even 100 at my house down here in SB today, took my road bike up Old San Marcos/Painted Cave and just about threw up a lung. Islands were crystal clear, and the channel looked mucho fishable. The surf today was EXCELLENT,,,and fun will be had tomorow. About smoking, people sem to love the stuff I make....I have a New Braunfels smoker,,,,the half barrel model with the offset firebox,,,,a big clunker but way cool. I presoak, for a few hours at least, hickory chips, then get a small charcoal fire going in the fire box. For alboe....brine is simple; a mix of water and brown sugar, no salt (maybe it's not technically a brine then) and soak loins for maybe two hours. Then, soak loins in Soy Vey's VERI TERI marinade for a few hours. Then, slow smoke as normal. My neighbors knock the door down! |

Offshore all day!! WOW .. surf was amazing!! Have a feeling there were A LOT of local guys missing at work this morning. Fishing was good this morning at UBBER HIGH tide. Slowed on the outgoing and then died. Storm stirred up so much feed that they are gorged. Nice day on the beach in and out of the water. |

Stacey, I do frozen stuff periodically when rotating out my old fish stock. sometimes with stuff 2 plus years old. turns out fine. better if fresh. Here is my favorite brine from a Dan Hernandez book. Piklin' rum brine 1 quart water 1/2 cup non iodized salt 1/2 cup of sugar 3 oz rum ( i use spiced dark rum) 1 oz lemon juice 3 cloves garlic 3 tbsp pickling spice 1/4 tsp lemon pepper 3 medium bay leaves Brine 2-4 hours, rinse in fresh water, put on rack and light dusting of you favorite spice( I use Cajun shake, or sweet mesquite from costco) smoke at 150 degrees till it is to your liking on dryness. I use custom built smoker with Bradley cold smoke generator and a small propane burner to control the heat. it sometimes take my batches 24 hours or more to get fully cured. dont let it get too hot. I only put the smoke to it for the first 2-4 hours. makes a nice light product without too much smoke flavor. also I try to use a fruit wood like apple, alder or cherry instead of hickory or mesquite. prob too much info but thats what has work for me. |

http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=95168&highlight=smoking+al bacore This is for smoked bellies. Stacey, do a search on that website...I'm sure someone has posted some good ones over the years. I usually do: 1 cup salt 2 cups teriaki 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 T pepper 1 t red pepper flakes brine for a couple hours...drain and allow to dry a little, then smoke until it is desired dry-ness (4-12 hours depending on smoker and temp). Warning: these measure are approximate, I don't actually measure when I cook. Yummy!!! lat, steve |

a fresh water recommendation if traveling to northern calif is the upper sac. ( out of redding)it is a catch and release for resident rainbows. 20 fish is common 2-4lb class. if i could get my pic's to shrink i could post. 6lb on a number 20 hook. i think i snagged a couple they were so thick. something to watch is the water levels before planning trip. shore fishing possible but presentation on a drift boat can't be beat. be prepared to fork out 350 for two. i also have a pic of where i caught the steelhead arroyo de la cruz . shows river bar with a bull seal harvesting fish.last years but it will show what conditions one would find. |

WEATHER: Now that the storm has left the area what are the prospects for prospecting for the next week ?? The wind is down today but the swell is not. Then as the swell comes down the wind increases. After today the wind models show 15-20 kts most of the next week. Then the long range models show another storm coming down from the gulf of Alaska next friday. The temps held through the storm and we should get some SST/chloro shots soon. There are most probably tuna still out there but getting out to look for them may not be easy except for the party boats. I think the Queen is going out tonight to fish tomorrow. Will keep watching and hoping for a change, for the better, in the forecasts. |

paul, i would love to go fishing with ya, i'll bring the vension jerkey, kick in a hundred bucks and scrub the boat throughout the day but i aint #$#$ if i leave before the washing is done. there were aprox 40 boats that launched the day i wrote about the wash being down and all could have used it. we were told to wait till after harbour fest was over and then heard about a water restriction on boat washes and not car washes. ( reminds me about the soon parking fees on boat trailers and not cars). so after a month we have a part on backorder. sorry season over. again my hope is not to pick on any of our public stewards but to hold them accountable in their priorities to the fishing community. my hopes were to gather support that Eric could use in repensenting fisherman. soon there will be the parking revenue collected off of us, i would like the counsel to know we have needs. .. so i will give paul 5 stars for his post and will shut up and fish. i dont own the harbour, you all do. |

Thanks for info Steve, WOW , only $4099 for the sport model, we willa ll have to get them now :-) My outriggers are just aluminum cheapies from west marine with roller release kit, there are 2 and they are gunwale mounted and gray in color with black cord. There was a Bigger Proline maybe a 27 or 28 out of Morro near Us but I never Got within a half mile of her. she may ahve been sporting something like that. I have been know to only bring 1 rigger or none from time to time. cool idea but that kind of spread with ultra long stinger would be a danger in a fleet like sundays dont you think. I guess its option D? none of the above. |

Stewart, I thought I saw a Proline out there that had a "green stick," which is basically an outrigger that goes straight up from the top of the boat with other lines dangling off of it. Either it wasn't you or what I saw wasn't a "green stick." Do you have only 1 outrigger pole? Here is a green stick. http://www.alltackle.com/greenstick_fishing.htm lat, steve |

Fishmaster? question on Green Stick reference? What precisely were you refering to ? I will assume choice C. until updated post, are they supposedly unlucky? That could be why we only got 1? a)My crewman Jim being a greenhorn? No, He Ate his first Alby heart 1996. b)Crewman Jim looking seasick( that was booredom beer, not seasickness)I think. c)Green color fishing rods maybe? (2of 10 on boat: 1 dark Grn ,1 light green) That light green stick was one of those 1970s solid glass "Savon drugs" rods that he had "Diamond" rewrap a couple years ago( belonged to his dad). I have similar one at home mounted with a 9/0 Senator that I got tired of washing& giving boat rides too! they were theee stuff back in early 70s, I had 2, broke the wood handle on 1, rod blank indestructable but obsolete. telephone pole action. Anyway , the lone fish came on a dark green 90s vintage diawa roller tip/stripper rod . you have an eye for detail . Hope to see everyone out on the grounds again soon. |

this storm wont do it but when the sandbars break along our local streams, steelhead are still possible. last year i caught one after 3 trips with a black marabiu fly. saw one other caught with a spinner/ roostertail. make sure u have a stealhead card and lic. read all local reg's because the warden checked my barbless hook everytime. |

Eric , i think it is okay to post our conversation via this site. perhaps we should call each other by titles so it will not sound personal to either of us. i am just one of the private BOATOWNERs, you are the STEWARD of our public owned harbour facility. though my 19ft boat cost me a mear 12,000 , it is an investment i respect. i have no other place to launch my boat other than the harbours you steward. as with the much needed rains, we count on our local ski resorts to have all the mataince done and ready for us to enjoy the natural wonders of the season. with all the local closers, we only have a short time to get the enjoyment from our investment. BEFORE season starts we tune our boats up, buy new line, Check our SPARE parts for WORN equitment. I do not question your personal prowness but i have never seen a private car wash shut down for months for a coin machine.i understand that you are a fisherman and understand that many of these boats are in the75,000 class. to buy a boat of that caliber must of us work hard and are busy also. to take a day off and invite perhaps a brother in law from out of town to fish and then get back to the docks where both have to work the next day, where the brother in law has to drive south and we go north, when does the boat get done? being a public facility we have no course but to voice up. soon we are to have fee placed on PARKING at our public facility and i will leave my concern with this. buy a new coin mechine out of the respect for those you have stewardship over. |

He's as salty as they come! Good to see him get some late season bluefin!!! So is there a way to target those? lat, steve |

Excellent Data on the albacore migration. It kinda of supports the two group theory but the fish are not exclusive to one group or the other as some did go two both the north and south areas. Bottom line; they are, just as we thought, UNPREDICTABLE !! WEATHER; Doubt that there will be any conditions good enough to go 50 miles before next week but will keep an eye on the models. |

btw...my wife and I just had the bluefin. We were going to sear some, but after having a small chunk sashimi...we proceeded to eat the rest of the loin that way. It was insane!!! Best fish I've had in a VERY long while. Boy, I'd sure like to target those things! |

Stewart (Stella Maris), Hey, we saw you out there on Sunday. Too bad you didn't pick up more fish. We just got really lucky in the morning. Not sure why we stopped to fish the spot we did (Gary's instincts are REALLY good!!!), but we saw jumpers and then got an instant jig strike within the first 15 mintues I thought I saw fishing with a "Green Stick." Was that you? If so, do you generally have good luck with that? later, steve |

Sunday Fish report. Launched psl 5:30am with a couple other boats right behind . Got 1/2 scoop pinheads well seasoned but all 3'-4" dinkers, headed out on nearly glassy seas 56 nmmiles on 237 deg mag 21knts , It doesent get any better, good vis,58degree water until about 32NM then 60.5 cleaner water, put lines in at 42NM trolled around until numbers were called right near us by waverunner. trolled to those numbers and were 2nd boat there, within the day fleet gradually increased to about 15 boats . Heard sporadic reports of troll fish and increasing reports of small jumpers but most boats just zig zagging around trying to get bit. about 2pm we finally got a single jig strike on a dark green tuna clone. tossed a marker and a couple dozen dead pinheads but no more zing. slowed boat and Jim brought in a 25#class fish. Trolled until late afternoon hoping for the late bite, it didnt happen. Party boat had reported a larger count but then clarified that some were bonita and skippies but not sure of mix. after 5pm most of the fleet had run low on fuel or enthusiasm and we started seeing the jumpers regualarly and lots of bait sprays. couldnt get them to bite any which way, very frustrating. pulled the lines just befeor sunset and got a nice head start for port before the darkness closed in.ran the last 30 miles int he dark. entered PSL 830 and dropped of fish and jim Anchored off 4night at Avila and slept til7AM. had to be home tonight and weather turning so we may have to wait a week or so until the lockjaw breaks on those fish. |

Sat fish report(late) fished Jim B jrs. boat for small rockfish limits up around the corner.Bite was slow paced ,weather was excellent 1 small ling released, decided to try shallow. Jim brought in a 24" Flatty on his rock rig as we drifted. Still cant wipe the smile off his face. Fed it to his wife and now he is allowed to go fishing more often. purisima boats came in early with full bolina limits and a few legal lings as well as a nice Fat starry flounder and a couple of nice flatties from the sane areas down there somewhere. returned home to prep my boat for Sunday run. |

Sounds like a Good meeting was had, I couldnt stay at PSL til 3pm today but appreciate those who did, you probably spoke for many of us. Thanks to Drew and Harbormaster Steve for caring enough about our PSL Boaters issues to work with us. Ocean is hard enough some days, Don,t want the port to be an unwelcoming and unfreindly place if there is a better way. Thanks again to those who were willing an able to attend as well as the port representatives. |

It indeed was good meeting as Steve stated. To expound on the issue just a bit, Steve McGrath gave us some good background on how things happen out there. There are parameters set by the County's Land Use, the Dept. of Boating and Waterways, and other agencies and the Harbor District obviously has to work within those set parameters. As Steve H mentioned, Drew and Steve M are ready to jump on this to make the necessary changes to facilitate our suggestions. As we left it, Steve M is working on the language to enact the changes so that it can be presented to the board. What we were shooting for is the allowance for trailer boaters to roll in the night before. If it's before 9pm (I think that was the finalized hour), you can park in the diagonal truck & trailer parking spaces. After 9:00, you can migrate into line for the launch the next morning. This is where the language will come in to play but you must be in line to launch so that means you'll be connected to a boat and ready to move at a moments notice throughout your stay. We're also shooting for filling the parking spaces in the diagonal spaces closest to the launch entrance first, then the 12 spots across the road near the camping spots second, then the remaining diagonal parking spaces in the center of the lot. This will hopefully alleviate having to back in to those 12 spaces across from the boat wash in the dark without a spotter. Steve M suggested a loading zone to be configured at the end of one of the parking islands adjacent the fish cleaning station so truck/trailer combos can stop, unload their catch, then move on to a designated parking spot while they clean. It will not be a spot to park and leave the rig while you clean, just load and unload so someone else can do the same. Thanks to all who came and especially Steve McGrath and Drew Brandy for their incredible willingness to work through this issue. It's nice to know we have such a good team at PSL. |

Greetings, We had a very constructive meeting with Drew and Steve. About a dozen of us showed up. Drew and Steve were there to hear our concerns. They both vowed that the port is there for fishermen and that they want to make us happy. I truly believe them. If you have questions, comments, or concerns please email Steve McGrath. They will be rewriting some ordinances in January...so it would be good to hear from you now. Basically they are going to make some enforcement adjustments until they can make the ordinance change. It looks like they will allow people to get in line at 9 p.m (or 10...not sure what we finally decided). If you show up earlier they ask you to park in the boat parking and then move in line after 9 or 10 p.m. You will not be charged camping if you are in line...but you have to launch the next day. In addition, they will allow the folks who are there early to park right in front of the launch (no more backing up against the hill in the dark!). Finally, they will be putting in a "Fish Unloading Zone" parking spot at the end of the lot near the cleaning station. I think this should work great for everyone. Once again, please email Steve if you have other ideas of things that should be fixed/changed. stevem@portsanluis.com best fishes, steve |

I'm with you guys on this thing just getting started, add plenty of bait/feed out there to keep them interested and around. Also, we been fishing lame tides and moon phase as weather permitted. Hope to see you guys up there soon when the fish are real 40 burgers : ) |
