Subject: Azores for Huge Blue Marlin

The Azores may well be the best place in the world to catch very large blue marlin and the only place I know of where there is a good possibility of also catching giant bluefin of 800 to 1200 pounds. White marlin and bigeye are abundant and swordfish are available. A top destination!

Last fall (end of September) I made my first trip to the Azores to fish for giant blue marlin with Capt. Joseph Franck of Shanghai Charters, the IGFA representative and top charter operator in the Azores. They are located at Horta on the Island of Faial, near the fabled Condor Bank. See their website (www.ciberacores.pt/shanghai) for the history of big game fishing and the numerous world records produced there.

Here's a brief report. Accompanying me were Capt. Skip Nielsen of Bud 'n Mary's Marina in Islamorada, FL ("How 'Bout It") and Andy Hahn, Editor of Sport Fishing Magazine (who wrote a feature article on our trip that is published in the Feb 2001 issue of Sport Fishing entitled "Granders in the Garden").

In 9 days of fishing for blue marlin, we experienced a big one pull out a lot of line then come loose (we think the hook had merely wrapped around its bill), released a 375 (with a nose just like a tuna), a smallish mako, and caught and released a double header of bigeye of about 125-150. But the other boat ("Double Header"), with Capt. Jo Franck at the helm and John Sadler in the chair (who's fished the last 10 years with Capt. Franck), went bonkers getting the following in only 5 days of fishing (while we fished virtually alongside in "Shanghai" with its excellent Kiwi crew): released a 700, eventually pulled the hook on a 1000, got a 75 lb yellowfin (which we ate), released at least 3 whites (whites are quite plentiful there but folks target the big blues), released a 750, pulled the hook on a 900, got a 750-800 to the boat even though it was hooked in the dorsal fin, and fought an estimated 1300-1400 for 3 hrs (all at 60 lb of drag) getting it to the boat several times before the hook finally straightened out (when on the 650# leader). (Of course, the IGFA 130 lb. record for Atl. blues is just over 1400.)

We then fished with Jo on Double Header for three days and changed his luck dramatically (and a front came thru). But there's more. Got word that the 2 neurosurgeons that followed us on "Double Header" had gotten a 600 and an 800 and lost another big one on Condor Bank all before 2 pm on their 2nd of 4 planned days of fishing. Their other days were lost to bad weather.

Based on reports from crew who have the experience to know, the Azores may be the best place in the world to go for a good shot at catching (and releasing) very large blue marlin. Better even than the new hot spot - Ghana - because the fish are significantly larger. The scenery is great (volcanic islands in the path of the Gulf Stream, which brings the big fish to them in the fall like a conveyor belt), and Jo and his wife, Greet, are terrific hosts. She's just written and published a great book entitled "Close to the Surface." It's a pictorial history of 50 years of big game fishing in the Azores.

I'm definitely planning to return this fall.

Interested in giant bluefin tuna, blue marlin, swordfish and the other large pelagics? Visit our website (www.Chambers-Associates.org). We also have some terrific photos of huge blue marlin (Atlantic and Pacific), giant bluefin tuna, black marlin, bigeye tuna, yellowfin tuna, sailfish, spearfish, swordfish, and sharks (many are world record fish) for your viewing pleasure.

Subject: Portuguese Man-O-War

I was out fishing one day in Portugal. I was there on vacation with my family and my pal Francis and I could think of nothing to do but fish. Me and my friend Francis went out to the beach there one day to fish. I didn't know what kind of fish there were there so I put a banjo minnow on my line and casted it out. I wasn't catching anything so I searched the depths of my tackle box and came up with a catfish whisker. I casted it out and a couple of minutes later I slammed a Portuguese-Man-O-War. As I hauled it up to shore it lunged at Francis and stung him in the eye. His eye swelled up the size of a Texas Grapefruit and he passed out. With my quick thinking skills, I took a 20-lb sinker that I used for deep-deep-deep-deep sea fishing and hurled it at the Man-O-War, effectively killing it. I put on some gloves and cut it's tentacles off with my trusty Emerson knife. As I was hauling the carcass home, I remembered my pal Francis. I took him to Lisbon Hospital and two weeks later he is still in a coma. Oh well, me and my family enjoyed the succulent flesh of the Man-O-War braised in honey and a white wine sauce.
