"TOMCOD" /CROAKER/"SEWER TROUT". No, I don't keep or eat them, but many do, real small ones are great halibut bait. This year there have been none in my harbor catch, very unusual, but the sabikis normally got dines etc before the bottom. maybe the sea lions or those big summer halibut ate them all? maybe thats where the halibut get their worms? didnt even see many in the pier buckets this year. Maybe DFG will make them off limits? Nah. |

Damn Dave, didn’t mean to get you all lathered up. Apparently I didn’t get the memo about no personal opinions but yours. I resend my previous post about a crappy day out to sea on Patriots. NEW POST: I went for a boat ride on Tuesday. The End. OK? And then, speeding out of the dark side ally, John does a quick hit and run. I was side swiped by a Ford Taurus. |

Hugh, thanks for bringing up Pete. He and I are friends and he knows how I fish. He and Taylor Freeland are 2 of the best I know. I helped Pete get his lic back, I love him like a brother, ask him about visiting him in Brookings. The 3 of us fished hard every day no matter what. I respect both immensly. Got to sign off for the weekend going to Tulare for the last AHRMA vintage race. Already cinched the +70 nat motocross championship. Capt Dave Not the least bit touchy |

WEEKEND WEATHER Joe, it is blowing 20-30 kts with 11 ft at 7 sec right now and this weekend doesn't look much better with 20-25 kt and 8 ft swell. Doubt that anyone is seriously thinking about chasing tuna sat or sunday. No good weather in sight for another week. There may be albacore out there but Gale is keeping them for herself. |

Touchy touchy. My old buddy Peter nelson and i are getting quite the laugh out of ya. he was the captain of the marauder when you were learning your craft on the diablo. i dont think i put PSL down. i stated that i have brought my own bait. as stated earlier you have a ling cod tourn. where you release big fish and give a free trip? on what 1" inch bait? you saying jig only trips are for the donkeys? if i wanted to put PSL landing down i would have fully stated that have made it a very hard season on Deke by NOT buying his bait and using the cut squid. last weeks storm has nothing to do with not supporting deke.they used cut squid all year hey , thats their business decision. the size of the bait they supply us with is too.its mine decision to fish plastic and strip bait. . PS> yes ERIC and i have been in the news. i have been fairly critical of a public boat wash coin mechine taking over 2 months to fix without bypassing it. i know Eric works hard but i think that the priority of fisherman is slowly slipping . |

Hugh, the thing I`ve read in your posts is that you don`t know S--IT. Deeke doesn`t have bait because of the storm it has nothing to do with the landing. You big bait fishermen are a Captains nightmare on a windy day, we call you big game fishermen, that`s not a complement. When the conditions are right, give ma a big dino but when the wind is blowing, listen to the skipper but you don`t listen do you. So to sum it up, you have put down Eric at Morro Bay and PSL in the last week. Hope you are proud. Capt Dave |

I like you HUGH remember fishing when I was a kid ( a long time ago)on the party boats out of SF we fished at the farlon islands , we had lots of hooks , and we caught huge salmon grouper ,6 at a time , I could not reel them in , my dad or grandpa would have to help me, the fishing was off the hook , they were always good eating . Besides all fish have worms in them , when you cook them they are gone , I put my fish in the refer over night before I vacum seal or eat and the worms come out, the cold kills them. Im ready for a fishing trip , finished the last of the fence work today , please lord STOP the wind Blackie |

proline. you may be on to something. season, location size. i remember the numbers we would catch off the piers, havent seen that for awhile. goes with the saying, all fish need respect. i was on a channel island charter for white sea bass and soupfin sharks went on the bite. captain yells down" fine eating fish boys" and stayed anchored for an couple of hours. it may be me living in the yesteryears and maybe missing something, i just can't eat it.glad others do cuz i hate to see them wasted. |

Jim B, maybe rockfish Sunday or Monday? Wind offshore not promissing. Wednesday it should be comming down if forecast holds and thursday is best forecast in a while. If you want we can fish your boat later nex week after you have maintenance done. keep your hopes up. If you need any of those tools let me know (hole saw, etc). I will get that other bilge pump next week. I may still have to change my bait pump sunday. I will probably ask some of the other crew if we rockfish. my cel will be back tonight. Ill call you friday. |

Load up? not anymore. no fish disrespect taken. limit on boccacio is 2 PP/day. >min size. Just ate part of one the other day, no problems, dont catch as many as we used to anymore.slow growers, DR. Milton Love of U.C.S.B. is a "bocaccio hugger".(and good fish writer). They used to be caught easily as juveniles off the piers . last time I took the godchildren "fishing" we only caught/released 2 juveniles in our sabikis. . 3-4" good for salmon troll bait . big ones caught off purisima and sal mainly, a bit deeper. we have only caught 2 large ones this year. and released one about 7" long. maybe some individuals are more wormy than others or some seasons??maybe I need to examine more closely? |

i got to weigh in here. i understand it is more of a decision that PSL landing is not willing to buy dekes bait, not the lack of bait. okay to tell me if this is not so. 2nd. i myself like a bigger bait than the slivers you get on some of the boats but thats me ( show me one person that doesn't put many strips on anyhow) knowing this i have always brought a butter tub of my own squid and when possible i fish plastic w a strip . i hate to disrespect any fish and dont want party boat folks not to be happy but the salmon grouper is not a target fish.hated it when the boat would load up to get in early with these . okay to pin a couple but lets fish some reds/ lings when paying for a purisma or long range trip. save them for a rainy day . You cant call what these fish have in them worms, they're night crawlers/ bul weavels. |

Worm cod?? Come on guys, In the last year I have heard various fisherman Say that Blues and Blacks are wormy, Halibut are wormy, Lings are wormy, bolina are wormy and now Bocacio are wormy. Everyone else just throw them back and myself ands my starving, scurvy ridden pirate crew will eat them for you. If you want to see worms hold a small croaker fillet up to the light. As an old man on the pier told everyone in heavily accented english, and a big smile, way back when. "Me cookie, They dead" This year I have "learned" "mother in law fish", & "Worm Cod", to go with Slime logs(barracuda), Catfood fish (skipjack), Any others I missed? :-) |

Devil Dog, read your post about Purisma and Patriot Sport Fishing. Sounds like conditions dictated the trip not the ability of the crew. At times the beach current combined with the wind dictate the drift. A couple of points: 1- The bait tank was left full to balance the boat otherwise it would bounce like a cork. 2- Bolina or Browns bite better on smaller pieces of squid. 3- In todays era of D.F.G restrictions every fish must be counted, no more estimating like before. One fish over boat limit is big trouble. 4- I`ve skippered that trip 100`s of times on the Diablo, Cheynne, Defiant and the Patriot. Some times it`s a bear getting back. You should be at the helm. 5- Don`t be a back seat captain. We have 2 fine landings that are trying to survive and provide fishing for us. Don`t knock either one. Capt Dave |

salmon grouper aka boccacio I haven't caught any real big ones, but the smaller sized ones (3-6#'s) I get in shallow water off Purisma are not wormy (at least no more wormy than lings/reds). They are definitely good fighters in shallow water. Robert, Bummed to hear you had a slow day down at Purisma...but I don't think it was the captains fault. If you catch a windy day and funky tides fishing can be slow anywhere. Sal and Joe are great captains and catch a lot of fish. Sounded like a nasty day on the water. I would have checked the forecast and bagged the trip if the wind was going to blow more than 15 knots (which it did). Give them another shot...there are some huge lings down there!!! Plus they have that Catch and Release program on big lings...which is really cool! Big fish released for the year wins a couple grand. Plus if you release a lingcod over 10#'s you get a free trip! Don't see any other charter's doing that!!! Man...when is this wind going to come down. The weather is nice on the beach...but it seems like Spring out on the ocean! lat, steve |

Well Mike, I am not sure what his intention was, nor do I care. However, I am sure that if I had spent more time fishing when I was younger and not wasted it in school (learning English) I would be as well skilled as him. I could have been the “jp” winner on all the party boats. Damn, I guess I will just have to settle for second place and sulk on my own humble boat. |

Blackie, glad to hear you guys had a good trip. I've always had a good time with Virge's. Tuesday some friends talked me into the "long range" on Patriots to Perisma (sp). Never again. I understand about no live bait, damn seals are going to cost Deke some money. They had cut squid: more like slivers. Ran out of that by 1100hrs. The drift was way to fast due to winds. Can't recall more than once when the boat was left in gear to compensate. We ran up to "a spot" & before anyone hit bottom we were off. When you called we were on our way back. I was on deck with the rest of the passengers getting soaked from the spray coming over the bow. The boat crew & eight passengers were inside the cabin. It was great, even though we had no live bait the bait tank was left running just to make sure that we were completly soaked head to foot. I checked their report on the catch #'s; Must be that new government math I've heard of. I didn't see anyone with more than half limits. A couple good size lings, a handfill of rock cod and one monster worm fish. I could go on but it's not nessesary. All in all thats why it's called fishing. Maybe Virge's just spoiled me as far as party boats go. Heck, I read this over before hitting post... I sound like a back seat captian, but it's the true trip story. Oh, it wasn't until three miles from the dock when the captain figured it might be a good idea to back down a bit before hitting the next swell so that the passengers didn't have to brace before getting hit by the next wave. I started laughing at one point, didn't know if we were still rock fishing or on Discovery some where in the Bering Sea. I am still laughing about it all. Most of those passengers were huddled together looking like this was the perfect storm part two. |

Thanks Taurus/John C. How was the weather?,the same thing all saw last Sunday when they were barely biting, but boiling and jumping, the fish we caught was bigger than the jumpers seen but we saw lots of jumpers. your spot is a bit closer than the 50-60 NM from last week before the storm. this is our first trustworthy spotting since the pac queen report. Thanks again for the report John. |

a bunch of albacore were boiling all day at the lower end of the santa lucia bank on monday...about 38 miles from avila on a 230 heading...was tied up working longline gear for blackcod and didn't get a chance to toss anything at them...the clean/dirty water break was drifting in and out of the area....most of the fish were in the 15# range...some jumping a foot out of the water just out of gaff range all around the boat....really wished i could have thrown something at them.....water temp was 59.8 at dawn then 61.2 at mid-day.... |

David. is it possible that 80,000 is the cost when, they divide the total maintance cost by the number of bouys. if they pull two bouys out will they really save 160,000? possibley the boat, the crew, repair techs and data control are overhead figured in reguardless how many bouys they have. i may be doing fuzzy math but could be a point to voice if Lois Capps will listen. do we really have a group with funds that would take over? is this hear say? |

The estimated annual maintenance cost per buoy is $80,000. Although the buoys will remain in their current locations through 2008, they may cease to operate if a mechanical failure occurs. ....geese! any takers? |

I heard today that the Pac Queen was out at the donut today for only 3 fish. It really helps to have a fleet of boats to find the fish. I plan on running out the next weather window. On the topic of the buoy, I did contact NOAA to inquire about the CCFCC contributing to maintain them. I got the typical government response: we don't want any additional work. So I contacted John Linsey at PG&E and he had a list of interested parties that might be interested in maintaining the buoy. I think I remember the cost being about $25,000 per year. Bob |

The Point Arguello and West Santa Barbara Channel buoys were deployed in 1985 and 1993, respectively, by NOAA for the Department of Interior’s Mineral Management Service (MMS) in support of a project funded through 2005. At that time, NOAA secured one-time funding to keep these buoys operational for an additional two years. Both buoys remain operational today, and we plan to keep them at the present location through this calendar year and possibly longer, subject to failure. Unfortunately, funding for repair of non-NOAA buoys, once the sponsor withdraws support, is not sustainable in the NOAA budget. This being the case, the two buoys will be removed sometime after 2008. |

D-Dog, It's my understanding that buoy has been funded exclusively through private funding and now that's over. I personally haven't heard of anyone making an effort to take that over. Perhaps you could point out some info that would lead us to the information. Not sure if she's been here or not yet but in our meeting with Steve McGrath last week, he did mention that Lois Capps was going to be in town and I think at PSL at some point. Perhaps there's an avenue we can take there? |

Enough with the BS. Whats important is the Point Arguello bouy is set for removal. Our govt. officials have their heads firmly planted in packard's (lucy) rear pocket. Money is not the issue, we as a group-fishing clubs- have offered to pay to keep the bouys in service. We can't even get a no: noaa will not answer the calls. I want all of you to get mad! Damn mad enough to get off your butts and make a scene. Besides a hand full of folks here with Mel leading the way standing up, what have you done. My favorite thing is to actually go to the Monterey Aquarium. My kids love to go and it really is a nice place. However, I like to stand next to the folks passing on the bogus info to the sheep about the poor fish and the evil fisherman. I will wait til they have a group and ask question like "where did you get your data" or "how do you know this is true?". I know I have stopped many people from signing the BS pre-made letters to our legislators by simply asking simple questions that the staff don't know- because they are mindless sheep. Open your eyes. No lead bullets, no walking on the beach because of a useless bird, and now Ca. will be telling you that can't have that big TV. Welcome to the hybred USA\USSR nation. If we ALL don't get mad enough soon to stop this crap we will not even have the right to get mad! |

One last bit and I'm done: My post was about YOUR typical "I'm so there no matter what...oh wait I cant" not about anyone else. You've already sent more personel info to the world in the last three post than I could imagine, You've even named her. I'm up for the weld off though. One twist...Beer welding.Hugh judges, Mike serves. Gamit beer welding/Timed. Lag weld, down a beer move to the next station & so on. I'm just a country boy not a weld pro, beer steadys my hand. and yes I do go shooting with beer also. Save the safety lecture. |

Devil Dog: Here is another funny about my wife, about 5 years ago we were trying to have another kid. I found (what I thought) was an awesome aluminum hull for sale. Knowing that this was the deal of the centry I bought quickly before anyone else could. I mean I spent all of our savings.....anyway, two hours later....I show up at the house dragging a two axle trailer with 3 wheels up the drive way...one of them were flat....Jenny is beside herself as I lower this diamond in a rough into its final resting place....Once the trailer is unhooked she says, "Well, you son of a bit$$, I am ovulating so get your ass in the house" That is the day we made little Riley Jo...LOL........ Do you still want to make fun of my wife? |
