i stayed at phifer/ big sur just awhile back because of the limekiln closuer and many of the creek side camps were closed do to possible flooding. the rest of campgrounds were open and the creek had ample water and provided great hiking. it is a longer drive but i think i'd do it again even if limekiln was open . recommend, if time is availible, to take nacimento rd for a beautiful drive through some of central Calif. finest. |

I agree , Dustin. The models are showing a break next monday/tuesday. That is when we will know what the water conditions really are. If is just surface cooling then it should bounce back quick but deep water upwelling may be another story. |

Harrell knows better than I in this matter ... In the past I would wait a week after a blow like this to pay attention to surface temps. Doubt that the water is going to be as warm as before, but hightly doubt it is as cold as it's showing at the moment. Not like me to keep a breath of optimism going on here ... just a hunch that it is not over. And my ex would let you all know I am wrong all the time! |

It looks like we'll be able to rockfish on the weekend. Dustin, I'm with you, Hopefully we'll be out fishing tuna on thanksgiving weekend. just to let you know, limekiln park is closed and probably will be for some time. I've been doing some work up there and walked up the creek a few months ago. All the bridges have been removed from the trails and campground in case of debris flows. |

Wow ... the wind is A'Blowin! For years I booked all my fishing trips up at Lime Kiln during October for a reason. Was the best weather month of the year in my opinion, but this is nuts. Tim, I am with Darby .... I just have a hard time believing the season is over when I have not heard of one fish over 30lbs this year (Besides Blue Fin). Some real green and dirty water out there right now, but with a week of good weather I believe that it will look fishy again. And if not .... well I shall head south for a Safety Meeting at the islands. D |

We got two weeks before the rockfish close and the big tuna haven't shown up yet. We usually get a really nice weather break in November (and January) every year and that's when the big fish show, if they do. Don't give up and put the boat away or get married or something! No, it's not over. In fact this is normally the best time of the year to be on the ocean, in my opinion. |

B. A. 16.1 ft swells 30 plus wind my kind of offshore fishing.Would be going , but the water is to green!!! No I have not been out since my epic journey, not due to desire, but the wind has not stopped blowing since that day, almost three weeks now. This is probably the worst 3 weeks of weather this time of year I have seen. Hope it slows down for at least for onemore shot for some bottom fish at Purisima.Lots of Yellow fin, Dorado, and Albacore in the freezer. We have had a great year on the off shore fish. 100 albacore, 25 yellow fin, 2 yellow tails and 15 nice Dorados. We can not complain on this year. |

B.A Yes the smelt did hit the rock cog rig...We had a beginer on board who kept reeling up. And he would get bit in the top of the water column... The birds where moving around and diving around everywhere...I always keep 2 sabikis ready to go as we have been catching our own latley...I put some smaller smelt in the tank cause the halibut like um... Problem was they were the Grande Ones...We even caught some micro pinhead chovys... I think theres just to much bait in the bay... I thought it was the smelt pushing the bait around... It said they caught a baracuda yesterday out of Avila? Maybe its the baracuda? I dont think were done with the Tuna just yet...This wind has got to quit...F*#K |

Ready for a tourny or two Stuey? Perch fishing has been terrible since this weather push. Every sandcrab has been turned over and the eelgrass and cover has been destroyed. Last three times out, all small fish and few and far between. Will give a go for an hour or so in the afternoon, but not expecting any better. Dave, I hope your wrong, but this has been the worst October weather wise I can remember ... How many times have we said this is our favorite month for weather on the water? Weird!! |

I also love the ultra light gear for the perch , I use a SHIAMANO ultra light spining reel with 4# mono, with a FLORO leader,I have been broke off by fish , so the braid sounds like the way to go, I use all braid on my rock fishing gear DAVE thanks for that refresher , I think at this stage of the game my best option is to release them, to fight another day . It is to bad the DFG does not give us back all the days that you can not get out , but like I said before J PACKARD just loves this weather , it keeps us off HER FRIGGIN OCEAN . |

Well, i need my reading glasses to tie knots in it....it's really fine but no stretch, so it is very sensitive...yes, basic 4lb clear Ande mono for backing....the reel is a little Penn Captiva CV2000 and the rod is an 8' Shimano Clarus, the lightest weight one....it's all you need down here...most of the time!!! |

Gonna get pretty wicked out there, and some nice cool temps as well...seems as if the fat chick isn't merely singing...she's belting out a freaking Wagnerian opera... Went perching two nights ago down by the slough at Goleta but the swell has torn up the kelp and eelgrass so it was pretty unfishable. Did spool the spinning reel with 4lb firewire, and i gotta say that stuff is pretty cool surf fishing....i could feel everything, like spectra for rockfish...you guys might want to give it a shot, only drawback is it's 17 bucks for a 125 yard spool... |

Mike H, I made that comment (how few days avail some years on central coast) on US govt sport fish survey this year. WE used a few(too many) of the good weather days from June to August to unsuccesfully prospect for pelagics. We called off another rockfish trip last night as the inside wind was forecast early and the swells at 1 digit intervals. Tuesday /Wedn predicted horrible also, now looking at maybe just maybe thur -sat but still have the longfin temptation. even thought about going down to The Channel Islands but wind looked howling down there too. As to your #9 Monterey ordeal, sounded like it started out as a 5 or so and went from bad to really really bad quickly. that was the best sea tale this year (with happy ending). have you been out since? Since you alreaady have the enclosed hardtop of #6 are any boat mods, survival suits, epirbs, liferafts going through your mind. or just avoiding dangerous seas as much as practical? Mike Blackstone, thanks for posting, makes us feel better about staying home. Race horse smelt(jacksmelt) on ultralight are a blast and kids love to catch & relase them using 4#test spin or "Disney type spincast rods" and a 2 hook sabiki leftover with just enough weight to cast. were they taking your bottom rigs? |

B.A I think I would rate it a 9, ten is left for the coast guard to comment for me, after they collected the bodies.I stiil think about what we really went through and the wind has not stopped yet. What stinks is the bottom fishing I had hope to do before the end of the season is looking pretty bleak.I sure would like for the Department of Fish and Enviromentalist would consider how many few days we are able to really fish in our area when they make the seasons for rock cod. |

Hugh, Right on! Getting married was the best thing that ever happened to me. I sought advise about my engagement here and was given some encouragement but left to figure things out on my own. My wife reads this page often and urges me to go fish as often as I can. She gets up at 3-4 am to make breakfast burritos makes sandwiches and snacks for everyone on the boat; In fact, she has recently taken a job to pay for my repower this winter. Congratulations Hugh. |

WEATHER OUTLOOK This coming week is not looking very good on most of the models. Some show a break thurs/fri and some do not. Wednesday is pretty ugly on all of them with gale and big swell which would leave thursday iffy even if the wind did back off. Will have to check the models/forecasts for friday as we get a little closer. |

Great guy, fished my buddy Ismael and I six hours each day and close to seven on the forth day, yesterday. Day one - 11 dorado plus numerous skipjack, Day two - 15 dorado, Day 3 - 20 dorado, Day four - four dorado (all 25 pounds or so). Fish ranged from 5 to over twenty five lbs. Released many and gave some to a friend and ate a few. Will try and post some picks. I can set any of you guys up with my panga guy if you head down there. Great fiberglass panga, outriggers, brand new 80 hp Suzuki four stroke. Time for bed. |

Mike H. /Oneida B. are you following this? After your victory at sea return to Monterey after your succesful albie run, you may want to contribute to the higher end of the scale. 6-10 |

OK sliding weather scale suggestion 1-3 go fishing bring beer run out. 4 go fishing have beer left. wear sunscreen. 5-go fishing and get salt spray, have 2beers in harbor. put up bimini on way in. 6 go fishing and get wet all over, have beer on land. wish you had a hard top or pilot house. 7. go fishing, have whiskey/rum at home. talk about bigger boat. green water on deck. 8 go fishing hoping weather improves. wish for bigger bilge pump, swear youll quit drinking. get shakes watching deadliest catch .If the 8 doesent bother you consider the coast guard or commercial fishing. 9 try and go fishing hoping its becomes a 7 or less. have whiskey/rum and beer until you stop shaking. shorts need bleach. consider surf/pier/shore fishing in future. 10 Just Work on boat from trying to fish 7-8-9 last time out. post your adventures here. If you fish a 10 we will wonder what happened to you and Gordon Lightfoot will write a Balad about your boat and your ill fated adventure. |

Taurus Devil Dog has a bark worse than his bite, He would give you the shirt off his back if you asked him right...But he can piss a guy off, trust me I bit last week... What we really need is a forecaster to ad a few lines at the bottom of his report....kind of a private boater sliding scale....Level "1" meaning, bring a water ski so you can have some fun after your done fishing....to Level "10" meaning, up your life insurance, make a video for you children to watch after your dead for fishing tomorrow.... |

you're welcome, jim. nws seems to be more focused on what is happening 60 miles out....stormsurf gives a much better prediction on what is happening closer in. |

John C.: Thanks for the tip on the wind forecast site you posted last month. I've found it to be "dead nuts" most of the time! Real helpful here at Patriot S>F> Jim |
