For what it is worth, I feel the maxillary or chin. The Canary is SMOOTH both directions really slippery. The Vermilion is smooth one direction and really sand paper feeling in the other. Quick way to tell if your in doubt. |

Sorry about the broken links. Just Googling "Copper Rockfish", and "Canary Rockfish" gives you some examples of really close calls between them. |

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/rockfishid.asp The cartoon pics, are not that good but the forked tail and orange coloration gives the canary away. I believe that fish taken as evidence has to be kept as such. Best of luck. |

Hope this is some help to all the strugling fish identifiers, watch canary, opaque "aft" section of lateral line is maybe most distinctive feature besides jaw texture http://www.landbigfish.com/fish/popup.cfm?photo=187 no 2 alike? dfgs canary vs vermillion link http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/pdfs/canary_id.pdf some other regulars and oddballs? http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/pdfs/sloperockfish.pdf http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/pdfs/shelfrockfish.pdf dfgs own fish id section has different renditions. http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/mspcont4.asp#copper |

Opinion on Citation based on unfairness of identification task.Maybe you all can tell, sometimes I cant, and I try very hard. MAybe I/we need a better information source? There is evidently a "copper" in red coloration that Jim B caught from his boat, identified, and ...almost.. got cited for last year ..until he showed them the chart and maybe the chin wasn't right and they agreed. warden couldnt tell easily so he got benefit of doubt. didnt have to go to court becasue not cited. If it takes a PHD marine biologist to identify the law sucks and should be unenforceable in my biased opinion. IMHO A good judge would lower the fine at worst as no fisherman intent on intentional take of prohibited species would toss it in the cooler with the rest. Who would have thunk that the only clue they give us would be rubbing chins and guessing at other features. I hope you show up and make a case , bring your fish card and any picture of the fish or get the fish into evidence and make sure their chain of custody of the fish is intact. This blows, I hope you get a dismissal or a greatly reduced fine, or better yet, I hope it can be demonstrated it isn't a canary if it really isn't. |

There is a big differance between a whitebelly and a canary.wont take much proof. I almost screwed up this year in a red frenzy , threw a golden eye in the box , turned around dropped back down and thought to myself , self something looks differant about that fish , went to the book and the fins told me it was a goldeneye , out to FLOAT |

If there is ever a problem identifying a fish, let it go. My friend got a ticket for a juvenile Black Seabass once and it wasn't pretty. He did go to court, and the fine was reduced. I'd make them come to court and prove that it is a Canary! Tim |

fishmaster. i was under the assumtion that the blues and blacks ( be a rockfish or not) have a faster growth and re population rate. thus, their harvest would have less impact. maybe, maybe not. doesnt seem to matter, after the seal take, theres not many left to put in the sack |

Karl, now that you have the Dab hunting ideas down pat, some rock crab advice, make sure you mark your floats very well and use suitable amount of line to adjust for tide changes with least excess line, write down all your drop spots, its not always that easy to find your nets in a windy afternoon and crabs are nocturnal anyway. You dont want someone, or yourself wrapping a line around their prop. It happens a lot down south where the lobster netters are out in force. We have had very poor results the last 3 years in the area from about pismo to port but the habitat itself is right, just lots of otters and cabezon and other crab eaters I guess. Results better around santa rosa reef above port ,deep maybe70-90ft edges but you could snag your gear if not careful there. any fish for bait good but large fish carcasses are tougher, if you use sardine you need it in a bait cage to keep fish and octopus etc from stealing it. mackeral and bonito are in between. AGain , if anyone has had good success recently will have better advice than me as my brother and I have almost given up crabbing locally after too many semi futile attempts. The best luck we have had for crabs is scuba diving the gaviota to el capitan stretch at night with a flashlight and a mesh bag while bug hunting. Up here we havent really done well in a long long time. |

Man them fish cops need to go across the pond to the home of the SAND PEOPLE and try that stuff , all this guy did is shoot a f ------ seal , so what ,its one guy , besides all they had was a search warrant. I think we need to show the seals where the BLUEFIN is parked , its a perfect lounging pad , and will hold lots of them Blackie |

The idiots in that video don't understand that a major change has impacted our fisheries since 1971. Our coast is losing almost 20 million pounds of fish every day from sea lions that weren't present in 1971. Studies have shown that about 30% of a sealion's diet is juvinal rockfish. Talk about a sustainable fishery! Our stupid policies will wipe out our fishery. Bob Hather |

Wow...that video of the home invasion is pretty gnarly. Why such a show of force? I wish salmon were a little cuter so people would care a little more about them! FYI: blue/black bass are rockfish. All of our local rockfish (e.g. bass & rockcod) (except lingcod/cabezon) are in the genus Sebastes. |

Remember to release rockfish with a barbless hook rig. Helps to bend a large hook out slightly. Have a dedicated pole with a weight on the very bottom snap swivel, and hook the fish in the bottom lip. Send them back down to depth and they will wiggle free. I use this rig all the time to release little and illegal fish. This helps their survival rate. We should all do this! Tim |

Here's an idea to any of the packards that may be reading. in years past where the seal population was not a Epic problem it seemed that we had a healthly Black/blue bass population. This year there seemed very few so my target was more rockfish. if we were to be allowed to reduce the seal take ( cull ) on this spieces, i promise your foundation that, i will add a few of these Bass to my limit reducing my take and time fishing of your presiouse rockfish. I am sure that our local landing Captians would do the same. |

i watched the seal video but could not get any sound. is this just a problem on my end? up over the hill where we get a bit of a squirrel problem, we are allowed to shoot the damn things. i guess The packards must own some farming operations where it effects them. I viewed the knots Darby put a link to, it was missing one that we " over the hill dirt farmers" called a NOOSE. |

Tree Dock Wow it's sad to see a fish and game warden almost in tears about how some of our citizens can be so vicious to local fauna.....maybe they should try to walk on a dock, or try to board a boat.... when sea lions are on board. Amazing how they need so many cops to arrest one criminal in front of his kid....wow....what are we going to do when they come to our house? |

I tried the knots page link and it was dead. Try these two pages for the essential knots. They can also be found on Virg's links page. From what I've seen most fisherman can tie on a hook but they're lost when it come to tying up a boat or anything else on a boat. http://www.animatedknots.com/indexfishing.php http://www.animatedknots.com/indexboating.php |

B.A., Here's a link to the Seal Shooting. DFG took 8 Wardens and the Nat'l Geo Camera Crew to the door bustin' raid to catch their perp. We've been talking about this for a couple days on another forum. For your viewing pleasure.... http://www.kcra.com/video/21686503/index.html Can't wait to see how hunters/fisherman are portrayed when Nat Geo gets through with this little project. I'm also wondering how much the DFG is getting for this little "Cops-esque" show they're participating in? Maybe a little something to take the edge off off the budget crisis? |

Two notes: first on Monday Nov 30th there will be a discussion of sport fishing issues on Radio KVEC 920 AM at 6-7 pm. Jeff Stulberg will moderate and Mel de la Motte, CCFCC president and Darby Niel, owner of Virg's and I will be speaking about the MPAs, MLPA, unreasonable fishing restrictions and sea lions and more. Please feel free to call in. Second, I will be fishing for sand dabs on Wednesday of the Rock. We find them by starting at 100 ft and move out to deeper water every 50 Ft until we find them. Last winter they were at 250 ft. I hope this helps. Bob Hather |

Karl -Sand dabs. No sure thing, but We normally pick up someincidental sand dabs in depths of greater than 100ft, flat sand or mud bottoms, mostly deeper than 120. all over the area from above the red light northward except on rocks. use small hooks and light line, light leader, sometimes hard to detect bites on even medium gear, little sport or fight to it. Drop down, drift bottom, wind up unhook, rebate, drop again. you can go hours without a fish and then find them by the bucketload. normally "uphill"& out from the red light, avoid rocky sections or you may accidentally kill rockfish. Jim B is going to try later next week and maybe we can get him to post coordinates for you if he gets into them. anyone else that pursues the wild dabs please chime in. I have not mande an effort to catch them, only caught lots incidental. Maybe this winter? |

I have a 15ft aluminum that I take out with the boys and now that rockfish is closed we wana go out and get some taco meat. Care to share any pointers? Thanks in advance. |

Blackie, I've been gone since a week ago last Thursday. Just got back tonight. Called the Blonde sometime back during the week. There's ALWAYS something that needs to be caught or shot. Been at it the whole time. Been setting up our fields for guided Specklebelly Goose Hunts in Willows this past week and hunted the storm front we had up there. Chasing Ditch Parrots and Ducks, too. Back to the Delta on Turkey Day Thursday till ?? for more Stripers, Mallards, and Honkers. It's Cast and Blast time until we get some REAL weather to hammer them in the rice fields. See ya this week. |

capt dave, like so many business, they shoot themselves tripping over quarters to pick up nickels. twice i read in a fish report that the stripers were chasing bait and i made the trip out there only to witness a all boat shunk. every boat on the lake. i pull into the mariana and ask the workers if they have seen anything and they told the truth. " lakes been dropping and they had not seen a thing in days" so it may have came from higher up then workers. i dont know and have not been back out in a month. i have to agree with stickman and say that the info from this board is pretty much hands on and correct. |

sadly dave more and more it seems fishermen are the only ones who care about fishermen and we still find a way to fight with each other. i am very happy to have this board and this group of guys to share knowledge with thank you all |

Hugh, the Marina workers at San Antonio and Naciemento have no expirence. When Forever took over they didn`t rehire the expirenced people but went with minimum wage bodys. They don`t care about the fishermen. Capt Dave |

i have tried to trust the mariana report to no avail. they will tell you they are biting when they are and say they are biting when they are not. |

has anyone tried a pencil popper for the stripers ,i know down at pyramid res they used to work like crazy when they planted trout at the launch ramp ,it was usually 20 mins after they released the trout it was like ringing a dinner bell and these 20 lb stripers were going wild |

ive only been once this year for no fish also they were crashing on bait everywhere around me though. i got a couple small nibbles but the shad were so thick that night you could feel them hitting your line in the water. my best nights have been with no moon and and slight breeze |

Cloud, the time to strike is now, they are weak. It`s all about the economy and shutting down a part of ours for 5 months is a sin. I made a living running the Diablo. Bought a house in Cambria and raised my kids. Can`t be done now, It`s tea party time. Capt Dave |

One can only wonder if we would have fared better if we refused to participate or acknowledge this giant scam called the MLPA like Prof Hillborn alluded to when he said: Without participation, there is no management. How long will we let so few control so many is the question that needs to be asked... |

If anyone is interested in making a big smoker, I have an insulated Stainless Steele food cart, heating element and some other stuff that I was making a big smoker out of. I would like to get $100 bucks for. Pretty much all you need for a big smoker less the smoke generator which is easily purchased on the internet. Not sure how to post pictures but can email them if you want. Give me a call Jim 610-4498 |

Jim/ Cracka re: fishing the isalnds, We fished Tallcot on the west end of Rosa on Mon. in great weather for limits of quality reds, chuckelheads, one legal ling, some huge whitefish and two 10-12 lb. sheephead (released). All fish were caught in less than 80 ft. of water on jigs tipped w/squid. Best bets for quality fish and variety are the most western islands Rosa and Miguel. Just make sure you know where the MLPA,s are. The fishing is great but it is a long run, 32nm from SB to the place we fished mon. I don't have the numbers on hand but if you head out on a 215 Mag heading from SB it will get you to the west end of Rosa and the rocks are pretty easy to meter in a broad area. Good luck if you go but watch the weather like Tim says. The west end of the channel can get pretty nasty. |

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/findyourreps.xpd?state=CA&district=23 Jeff, Et al; It is time to start at the top. If these three can be voted out of office with a strong message to their replacements that we are "mad as hell and won't take it anymore" It could just be the beginning of a turn around. The "Trickle down theory" may work in politics too. Let the 2010 elections be lesson to all of our representatives that we want real representation and if we don't get it out they go. |

Dave Maybe we should start a tea party for this no reason we can't add this. Have you seen any reduction in our fishing licenses. Maybe if everyone took a year off I know hard to do, and do not buy hunting or fishing licenses. Plus no boat license fee (TAX). I wonder how much revenue the State would loose when they could least afford it. I know I'm asking and doing research on our next Governor. And get involved the problem is we have been silent and got what we deserved. SO GET INVOLVED THIS IS A WAKE UP CALL PEOPLE! |

No luck at San Antonio Lake but I watched at least 5 being caught. There is a lot of bait near the shouth shore launch ramp and fuel dock. I fly lined live bait that is easy to snag with a trebble. the nice weather wore out a couple of 6 year old boys and my 4 year old daughter who were just as happy snagging shad with trebble hooks as catching big striper. Heading back tomorrow afternoon to try the afternoon and night bite without the kids... |

Hey Charles, We'll get together soon for Margaritas, ceviche, and of course BEER!!! Here's a recipe I just used on some YFT and yellowtail for smoking. It's for 10-15 pounds of fillets or steaks: 16 oz (2 cups) water, 1/2 cup non-iodized salt (may use less), 1/2 cup brown sugar, 8 oz (1 cup) soy sauce, 8 oz (1 cup) apple juice, 2 Tbsp black pepper, 1 tsp onion powder, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp celery salt, 1 tsp(?) cayenne pepper (may use more or less depending on how spicy you like it), dash of fresh ground dill if available. Brine the fish for 8 hours, VERY LIGHTLY rinse under cold tap water, lay out on paper towels to dry for 2 hours (you can use a fan to help this process). After fish develops a sheen (or pellicle or skin) and is tacky (not wet) to the touch, load it into smoker for 6 to 8 hours, depending on how moist you like your smoked fish. Bon Apetite!!! |

Paul and I ran into each other at Bahia Asuncion. We had never met before then and had a good laugh that you run into a fellow SLO county fisherman 1,000 miles from home. Bahia Asuncion is a great place to go in the fall. The fishing was wide open when we were there. Yellow tail, Yellow Fin Tuna and the largest Calico Bass I had ever seen. Lots of fishing opportunities even if the wind is blowing. There is an island very close to the launch area and another 6 miles away. Most of the commercial fishing in this area is for Lobster, Abalone and snails. Very little commercial pressure for anything else and that is why the fishing is so good. The Convina fishing from shore was almost a fish a cast. With the big ones approaching 6 lbs. Shelley caught a few really nice ones. Be sure to give BA a try in the fall. That is prime time for pelagics. And again the Big Calicos are there year round. Most of the Calicos I caught were over 5 lbs. |
