There may be some changes in the regs by 2011. Mel and the CCFCC is working on some stuff that may give us some more opportunity too by then or further down the road. I talked to the head of the df'ng marine division a few months ago about what we would like to see here if we could get more. It depends on the science but I said first 8 or 9 months through Dec. 31, then go for more depth out to 60 fathoms or so, then back to more time. We also talked about reformatting some of the MPA's to lessen economic impact but I think that'll be a long time from now before they do that. |

Darby You can go to northern IDAHO and get paid to catch fish , 15.00 a HEAD mac and rainbows only , talk about management kill off all the fish that brings tourism, makes sense to me. On another note , WHAT DO YOU THINK THE CHANCES ARE OF YOU GUYS GETTING A 9 MONTH SPORT SEASON ? The weather this time of the year is great on the ocean, maybe we can swap some months around , when its so windy close it down , we cant fish anyway. But I think your right , 2010 may be the year to relocate. Blackie |

30 Million. I just have mixed feelings on that. Part of me says, "Good, serves 'em right. They're not doing their job anyway." But then I know that just means a sell out to the highest bidder later on. But since they've gone awhoring already, what's the difference? So what if they have all kinds of laws and restrictions and no fishing signs posted if they cannot enforce any of it? Maybe, along time from now, it will force a different system. It used to be they had to prove the fish were not there to restrict fishing. Thus our, "right to fish". With the system we have now, thanks to the marine life protection act, they have to prove the fish are there before they can allow fishing if they wanted to do that. But they "don't have the money to do that." So what if they have $30 million less. $30 million more still wouldn't be enough. My new years resolution? Move out of this state! |

Those of you who have had the pleasure of fishing the Sea of Cortez out of San Felips with Tony Reyes, will be saddened to know that he passed away December 18, 2009 at age 86. He was instrumental in the development of the sportfishing scene in Northern Baja. For more info go to BloodyDecks.Com, click on 'fishing forums', drop down to Mexico and click on 'Baja' |

I was reading the WON year in review paper and picked up this little piece of info... In Feb. 09 Gov. Schwarzenegger made a bold move to target $30 million from the coffers of the already underfunded Dept. of Fish & Game as part of his bail-out packagefor the State of California. The money reperesented about one-third of the annual reciepts from hunting and fishing license sales; not to mention it was being sought after even thought the DFG is under funded and under staffed. Schwarzenegger claimed it to be a "loan" that would be repaid by 2013 (We shall see...) Neededless to say, the move infuriated anglers and sportsmen alike... See what I mean... |

Came up to the Eel River with my wife to stay at Benbow for New Years. Had to give a few of my old spots a try for steelhead. It has been 20 years since I last came up here to fish winter fish. Used to get a lot of nice ones. I brought up an 8 weight fly rod and my old waders. Water was rising pretty fast, but I got in a few hours of casting in the swift current for one take and a lot of great memories. River was blown out by sunset. Happy New Year.. |

Mario at http://www.sportsmensseafood.com/ has always taken great care of my fish in San Diego. Ask on the long range boat which processor they recommend. The boat will arrange for the fish to be picked up. Some are better at mailing. Some are quicker. Some have a kid who is going to school where you live so they deliver. It is kind of like picking a long range boat to fish on. Most of them will do the job well, you just have to find someone you like to work with. Mario has been helping me for many years, and he even forgives me when I try to clean the fish myself sometimes. |

Wishful thinking I know. You guys who have been to alaska know why there are not that many seals up there? Besides pods of orcas? Its legal up there to harvest (shoot) them, at least it was when I lived there if you where native(half the population). |

The weather was fantastic , only got trashed one time , and the crack was working , camo and bloody. Had a great day on the coast. Blackie |

I think there are places in mexico that an american can live in peace , but then there are places you want to stay out of . So I guess i had better keep the licence visible till march . you all have fun with your new TOYS you get this morning , ill be on the BEACH . Blackie |

Has anyone checked out the Morro launch ramp? It is pretty thrashed. They hauled out the Restless Sea and scuttled it right on the ramp. The ac is tore up from the low tide line all the way up. Robb I can remember catching white sea bass off of the pier at San Simeon 45 years ago so they were around. Part of the problem with placing artificial reefs may be the many regulatory hoops that we have to jump thru here in California. |

jon-i think your right about focusing energy into improving what we do have. two things i've allways wanted to know about are: artificial reefs. they do this on the east coast. what's it take to drop some debri in various areas between pt estero and pt buchon? and a white sea bass enhancement program with grow out pens here. this is a proven fishery down south that would definetly work up here. i think i've been told the seabass was a huge commercial staple in this area for years? darby has some great pics from years gone by anyways! i certainly would donate 5 bucks for that stamp. imo: this kind of stuff should have been mandated into the open fishing areas when they did all the closures. |

I feel like I'm bringing us all together somehow!..lol...John, you seem like a good guy. Like I said the commercials around here are not my concern, the guys up north raping my beloved steelhead and salmon in their nets are what boils my blood....Go get those black-cod, I buy it at the store quite often....maybe I'll just get ahold of you next time I need some, fresh is better...Mike |

Hugh, you may have lost one in my boat. If you would not try to stick the license on your head you may have better luck keeping them. Just having some fun with ya!! HA |

Hell Blackie, doesnt matter if you wear your lic... them scum suckers will still board your boat. the idea about wearing them was only to have us lose them. i've had to replace mine 2 or three times since the law came out. |

i got a ? recently someone posted , THAT YOU WERE NO LONGER REQUIRED TO WEAR YOUR LICENCE , I am looking at the 2009-2010 freshwater and saltwater supplement. Page 2 first thing it says is IT IS UNLAWFUL TO DO THE FOLLOWING FAIL TO DISPLAY YOUR SPORTFISHING LICENCE WHILE YOU ARE ACTIVELY FISHING (CRC T-14,SECTION 700) So do we have to wear them or not ? I gave up hunting , so do you hunters display your licence? I think Ill start wearing my drivers licence around my neck , so the CHP can see i have one , are the wardens so f----- lazy they cant get out of there vehicle and ask , LIKE ALL THE REST OF LAW ENFORCEMENT .What a bullshit law , maybe we will have to tatoo them on our forhead next . |

mike, you keep talking about the past...sure, stupid things were done 20 years ago without regards for the future... but just how long am i supposed to take the beating for what other people did 20 years ago(almost all of them are retired now)?...every concern you have stated has been addressed and regulated to death.. i fish the slope, blackcod, nearshore rockfish, albacore, salmon, and whatever else pays... i even fish slime eels when i get real stupid. i hope my direct talk hasn't offended you too much,my bark is louder than my bite.... anyway,we should do breakfast sometime...i'd be happy to answer any questions you have. |

Yea Bob the price is a little intimidating for anyone to jump into fishing business. Last week I met a local commericial fisherman that just bought a used boat and is rigging for black cod. It seems that good credit and or deep pockets is a must. Also the modivation, confidence and know how to use it. With that said I know that he plans on making it a positive cash flow kind of thing. I'm personally about $100,000 excluding labor into the boat my partner and I finished building and rigging this June. Divide that 100g's by 30 lbs (6 rock fish trips I made this year times 10 pounds caught equals 60 pounds divide that 60 by half after filleting and that leaves 30 pounds of fillets )and I sitting at about $3,333.00 a pound for that fish plus fuel, insurance, tow vehicle, intrest, ect, ect, ect. My kind of fishing will never be a positive cash flow kind of thing. And I definately wouldn't want to make my living off the ocean. It's dangerous out there. But to get out on the water and see and experiance the things that we fishermen get to it is definately worth it. Hopefully next year I'll get to pull on some tuna and get my price per pound of fillets down. |

Besides all that, everytime you guys get on a party boat, you are on a Commercial Fishing boat. Now, if there's 25 people on this boat you are allowed 2 hooks per rod, 10 fish per person, plus 2 lincod per person, providing the season is open for them. So we have 25 people, x 10 = 250 fish. At a 2 pound average = 500 pounds. Commercial fisherman are allowed an average of 1300 pounds over a 2 month periond, excluding a 2 month closure time during March & April, when we are shut down, and our licences are due. Like Taurus said, sportfisherman are allowed 80% of the catch, were left with the rest, and we will feed our families with the rest. The problem is not with Commercials, not with Sport, but with the regulations bestowed upon us. The draggers, and Gill netters are no longer in existence in our waters, they have been bought out. Now as far as blackcod & blackgil as long as you have a commercial Fishing license and a Commercial Licenced Boat, it's wide open. Commercial Fishing for these species you have to be 150 fathoms or deeper as there is a RCA area which starts at 30 fathoms to 150 fathoms is a RCA area. Also you will need a VMS unit, Coast Guard Inspection and Safety Gear. Boat ?? VMS $3500.00. Safety Gear $5000.00. Electronics $7000.00 Minimum. Crew & Gear ? Get after it boys! |

No argument from me on what you do for a living John, it can be a noble profession, I know..My Grandfather trolled salmon for most of his life until the late 70's out of Port. All my Uncles fished salmon, tuna, halibut, seabass, reds and bocaccio for all of my life from S.Fran down to S. Barbara. I really don't have an argument with you?, but you said I don't know what I'm talking about...and I do. What do you fish anyway?...I'm curious... And what did I say that you think is nonsense?.. Again, I don't expect you to lay down and I don't think you should, I don't care about the fact you fish for a living, nothing wrong with that....I'm just saying that over the years commercial fishing has done more damage than sport fishing to certain fish stocks...Am I wrong in saying that?.....This is supposed to be about Warden Stamps, not you or I.....Be safe out there this week!.......Mike |

Lesson 1: Bert, you need to post your photos vertically so the draft looks like this: 2002 Albemarle A few pictures xjpg_alreadyuploaded{0000,} xjpg_alreadyuploaded{0000,} xjpg_alreadyuploaded{0000,} xjpg_alreadyuploaded{0000,} xjpg_alreadyuploaded{0000,} xjpg_alreadyuploaded{0000,} xjpg_alreadyuploaded{0000,} I had to replace the / with an x to post this. Second: You have to love our DFG. A friend told me a story how he was going to see his dad who went fishing. My friend inadvertently wore his dad's license when the warden came over and gave him a $1300 ticket plus a misdemeanor. My friend wasn't even fishing. 3 ur friends at the top of the DFG refused an offer made by our fishing group Central Coast Fishing Conservation Coalition to fund future ground fish stock assessments to be performed by the UC system to get us out of the data poor situation we are in that cuts our season in half. 4: When Darby and I sat on the stakeholders group for the MPA's our good friends at the DFG completely ignored our hard fought compromises with the no fishing groups and decided to implement their own staff's placement of the MPAs. 5: Our commercial fleet is almost regulated out of existence. 6:The wardens flunk in knowledge of the rockfish laws as we learned at the salmon seminar. Maybe they should get a raise. 7: When they last boarded my boat they broke a cupholder. They charge $25 fill out a claim form for a $10 part. I got a $400 ticket for leaving my license in my car by mistake. 8:And no one in government will deal with the sea lion problem which take many thousands of times the fish man takes because their population has exploded from 20,000 in 1971 to about 900,000 today. As they begin to starve to death your license fees can go to sea lion hospitals. Finally, happy new year to all. Its very interesting to read this board and learn I'm not the only waco out there. By the way, I have heard some white seabass are in. Bob |

robert, all nets will collapse upon themselves within weeks..sharks love to deposit thier 'pods' on anything around..between the normal growth that occurs on line and nets within weeks of being in the water and the deposits of fish eggs on the webbing, i doubt any damage is being done... certainly no nets from over a decade are still fishing. john |

mike, quit with the spin.i don't have a 'chip' ...i am only reacting to the words you write..by your owns words you don't respect commercial fishermen enough to learn new regulations...you lambaste them over things that happened many years ago without any sense of the reform of regulations that has taken place over the last two decades..today things are much different .. i'm not about to lay down and not react to somebody that spews nonsense about my chosen profession... know what you are talking about with regards to CURRENT regulations... then maybe we can have an informed conversation... ranting about nonsense is going to get the appropriate response from me.. anyone worth thier salt would have the same reaction to somebody posting bullshit about what they do for a living |

my 2 cents on comercial fishing ,what really hurt the most was when the viet nameese used the monofilament gill nets ,most of them that were lost 30 years ago are probably still fishing today |

John, nobody threw you under a bus, you chose to react with the head up "my ass statment". Like I said, I respect the commercial fishing industry. Always have...I have been part of it since I was a kid. My point is that commercial "anything" for that matter is very destuctive, not hook and line commercials, or salmon trollers, or tuna trollers...but the netters, draggers, and seiners do much harm, not only to untargeted species, but to the target species as well....I've been on those boats John, I've seen it. I'm not arguing with you about over regulation, yes we are all over regulated, but sport guys do not do the damage that we are being punished for. I have not read the commercial regs, nor do I need to, it does not matter. I'm a steelhead guy, so I pay attention to what is happening with them and the salmon up north, I don't care about black cod guys around here, they don't harm anything to my knowledge, nor do I think they do. Nobody is picking on you personally...stop with the "chip"...Mike |
