EDU Subject: Winter Storm Warning starting Sunday Currently, the strong El Nino is reaching its peak in the Eastern Pacific, and now finally appears to be exerting an influence on our weather. The strong jet has been apparent for quite some time out over the open water, but the persistent block had prevented it from reaching the coast. Now that the block has dissolved completely, a 200+ kt jet is barreling towards us. Multiple large and powerful storm systems are expected to slam into CA from the west and northwest over the coming two weeks, all riding this extremely powerful jet stream directly into the state. The jet will itself provide tremendous dynamic lift, in addition to directing numerous disturbances right at the state and supplying them with an ample oceanic moisture source. The jet will be at quite a low latitude over much of the Pacific, so these storms will be quite cold, at least initially. Very heavy rainfall and strong to potentially very strong winds will impact the lower elevations beginning late Sunday and continuing through at least the following Sunday. This will be the case for the entire state, from (and south of) the Mexican border all the way up to Oregon. Above 3000-4000 feet, precipitation will be all snow, and since temperatures will be unusually cold for a precipitation event of this magnitude, a truly prodigious amount of snowfall is likely to occur in the mountains, possibly measured in the tens of feet in the Sierra after it's all said and done. But there's a big and rather threatening caveat to that (discussed below).Individual storm events are going to be hard to time for at least few more days, since this jet is just about as powerful as they come (on this planet, anyway). Between this Sunday and the following Sunday, I expect categorical statewide rainfall totals in excess of 3-4 inches. That is likely to be a huge underestimate for most areas. Much of NorCal is likely to see 5-10 inches in the lowlands, with 10-20 inches in orographically-favored areas. Most of SoCal will see 3-6 inches at lower elevations, with perhaps triple that amount in favored areas. This is where things get even more interesting, though. The models are virtually unanimous in "reloading" the powerful jet stream and forming an additional persistent kink 2000-3000 miles to our southwest after next Sunday. This is a truly ominous pattern, because it implies the potential for a strong Pineapple-type connection to develop. Indeed, the 12z GFS now shows copious warm rains falling between days 12 and 16 across the entire state. Normally, such as scenario out beyond day seven would be dubious at best. Since the models are in such truly remarkable agreement, however, and because of the extremely high potential impact of such an event, it's worth mentioning now. Since there will be a massive volume of freshly-fallen snow (even at relatively low elevations between 3000-5000 feet), even a moderately warm storm event would cause very serious flooding. This situation will have to be monitored closely. Even if the tropical connection does not develop, expected rains in the coming 7-10 days will likely be sufficient to cause flooding in and of themselves (even in spite of dry antecedent conditions). In addition to very heavy precipitation, powerful winds may result from very steep pressure gradients associated with the large and deep low pressure centers expect ed to begin approaching the coast by early next week. Though it's not clear at the moment just how powerful these winds may be, there is certainly the potential for a widespread damaging wind event at some point, and the high Sierra peaks are likely to see gusts in the 100-200 mph range (since the 200kt jet at 200-300 mb will essentially run directly into the mountains at some point). The details of this will have to be hashed out as the event(s) draw closer. In short, the next 2-3 weeks (at least) are likely to be more active across California than any other 2-3 week period in recent memory. The potential exists for a dangerous flood scenario to arise at some point during this interval, especially with the possibility of a heavy rain-on-snow event during late week 2. In some parts of Southern California, a whole season's worth of rain could fall over the course of 5-10 days. This is likely to be a rather memorable event. Stay tuned… -- Samuel Y. I need to get some boat trailer work done here soon. I found Morro bay RV and marine center in the book...I want to get the bearings done and new lugs. lugs are rusted on, and I need 3 more new tires. The surge break line is broken too...Anyone ever used them? Marty took care of me the last day of the season when I got a flat... And couldnt free up the lugs... Hey Marty I dont know if you would be willing to do my trailer work but Im going to bring it to you to pick the boat up and cut the bunks for the strap. Any advise is appreaciated... Thanx Paul |

Yea...it does get a little rough down there in the winter, but it also nice to be fishing everyday instead of hanging around here I actually started going down there in the winter when I lived in Humboldt and Oregon...so it was really more of an escape from the rain than anything else. Yea...that thing looked gnarly. We did let it go. The brown ones are delicious though!!! I do want to try it in early June. I went do BoLA in late September one time and thought I was going to die (100 degrees and 90+ % humidity)! Plus the Dorado didn't even make it up there that year for some reason. I hate the heat, but apparently the Dorado and Sailfish action off of San Marcos and Tortuga is really good and it isn't too hot yet. I have a 15'6" Gregor with a 30 hp. It is called their Baja Special. It is as big as I'd want to go for the beach launching that I like to do down there. Only 4 more months until we can fish around here! |

nice report steve and nice fish. try fishing in the early summer instead and youll get glass every day. we like it between late may and early july for all the yellows you want(bola)up to 50 pounds. yes it can get hot but the water is warm and the beer seems colder. by the way you wouldnt want to eat that big yellow clam as they are very tough. |

Greetings, Just returned last Saturday night from two weeks in Baja. No problems traveling in either direction. Roads were in excellent shape. We left SLO Sunday morning and stayed with my friend Markus in San Diego Sunday night. Left early that morning and made it to Guerro Negro just before dark. We pulled in to Dos Amigos campground in San Lucas Cove on Monday morning after an uneventful trip through the Baja peninsula. We were pumped to go fishing for as we crested the hill coming down in to Santa Rosalia we could see that the Cortez was flat calm! We unpacked the boat and launched the boat as fast as we could in order to catch what was left of the falling tide. Packed up some snacks and headed out with rumors of sierra and firecracker yellowtail off the Haystack.
It was greasy calm and we made it up to the haystack in no time. We trolled around a bit and immediately hooked up on a 3-4# yellowtail, which are quite a tug on the bass rods! We caught two more, but then the bite shut town and the sierra were nowhere to be found. Tried calling out on the radio to the guys at the 110 (fishing spot off the N. end of Isla San Marcos), but got no reply. It has gotten kinda "clicky" there the last few years It was flat calm and we decided to head across even though we didn't have bait. Figured we might get one on the iron or see some boils. There were a couple boats fishing and there were catching a few fish. we wound iron for over an hour, but only had a couple small rockfish come up from the depths. For some reason the YT don't seem to hit iron there, unless they are boiling (more about that later!). At one point I thought I saw some mackerel on the sounder and my friend Tony sends down the sabiki. He catches something, but it isn't a mackerel...it is a Cortez Grunt. It looked pretty good, so Tony sent it out on the flyline. I didn't have much faith, but we weren’t exactly killing them on the iron either! It held the rod for about 5 minutes, then eventually put it in the holder with the clicker on so he could at least wind some iron. We were all pretty shocked when the clicker went off! He let it run for a bit and then engaged the reel...line began peeling off and we knew we had our first yellowtail of the trip!!! It was a nice 30+ pound fish. We proceeded to catch two more about the same size (@ 40" so we were guessing 30-35 pounds). We were happy as clams when we came in to camp with our big YT. Not everyone fishes at Dos Amigos and even the ones that do don't fish very often...so they were stoked to have a bunch of fish get delivered to camp. We cleaned the fish, drank some Pacificos and ate our first fish tacos of the trip. They were the best fish tacos ever!!! The next day we got up early and headed out to make mackerel at our usual spot. We get out 2 dozen in no time and head over to the 110 (it is a 110' high spot or Bajo about 1 mile off the N. end of San Marcos). On our first drift we realize that this is going to be a special trip after we hooked 5 and landed 2 (Tony broke a couple off on 30#...he quickly put that rod away. It was his first time catching really big YT).
We landed a few more fish, but then the bite died down as the Cortez began to get glassy. About that time we notice some birds working off in the distance so we head over to check it out. Sure enough the YT were beginning to work the bait up to the surface. They were everywhere, but weren't staying up for long. I had learned from past experience that it was a little pointless to try to chase the boils down for they would pop up and go down before you could get there...then pop up right were you just left. The best solution I found was to slow troll (2-3 mph) live macks with the clicker on. It worked great and we had another 5 on and landed 3 (releasing most now). I did get a few casts in on some boils with iron, but the fish just chased and boiled on my jig and didn't stick! Every fish that day was in the 30# class!
That afternoon the tide was super low, so we headed out on the mudflats to look for clams. We ended up with a pretty good bucket of chocolates and a few random ones...good eating!!! Except for the big one which seemed to be just too much of a good thing
The next morning we repeated the previous days ritual and the fishing started out as hot as the first with 3 fish landed on our first drift...unfortunately the Cortez was getting angry and El Norte Viento (The North Wind) was beginning to whip up. We decided to head in while the getting was good...and it was a good thing too because it really started to howl by the time we got to camp. I was completely soaked as it was Knowing that the wind can blow for days on end and that there is nothing to do there when it does, we decided to run for the protection of Bahia de Concepcion (Bay of Conception) South of Mulege. It is a pretty spot with perfect sandy beaches, protected waters and many islands to fish around. Unfortunately commercial gill netters fish it pretty hard and the fishing is usually pretty poor. But it is better than getting sand blasted by wind and staring at the palapa walls! The wind ended up blowing for 5 days...but the fishing ended up being surprisingly good! Even with the 30+ knot winds on the outside, we were able to fish every day in the Bahia. The sierra were in pretty thick and we caught 10-20 fish every morning by trolling rapalas or winding small irons. Lots of fun and very tasty!!! They also make the best ceviche ever!!!!!!
We also caught way too many Mexican barracuda (a fish which is proliferating down there because it is immune to gill nets!), a bunch of 2-3# mini-roosters, a very strange Mexican lookdown, and a few other random reef fish. It was a fun stay on gorgeous beach with some nice people, but we were aching to get back to the monster YT of San Marcos...so we packed up camp again on Monday and headed N. We got ice, gas and supplies in Mulege...including a pound of baloney! My friend Tony loves to fish and is one hell of a fisherman...but apparently I didn't inform him (he says I should have warned him) that we'd be eating fish twice a day, usually in the form of a fish taco. Anyhow, he preferred the baloney while my dad and I ate fish tacos, ceviche, or clams! We set up camp again at Dos Amigos and headed out early the next morning...unfortunately the Cortez was still angry and wouldn’t let us get out very far. We did make it as far as the Haystack (a hill that looks like a haystack off a point about 3 miles N. of the cove) and were stoked that we did because the sierra fishing was wide open. These were bigger models than what we caught in Conception and we had a blast on the light tackle. We must have caught 30 that morning. We kept a bunch for Frank, a fellow from Reedsport, who smoked them up for everyone in camp. The weather laid down the next day and we were able to head across the channel with a tank full of bait. It was another great day with 1 or 2 fish coming on every drift! All the fish were still huge with none under 30#'s. Once the fishing died down, we began looking for boils again and sure enough, about a half-mile away, we saw a huge boil the size of a couple football fields! We headed over, killed the motor and began chucking iron. I got a few hits, but couldn't stick one on my first cast. My dad casts out bait to see if he can get one going on that...good idea so I cast out my bait and put it in the holder while I continue to cast the iron. There are a few boils way out and I give the Newell and huge toss and the Tady 45 (aluminum surface jig) lands just a few yards past the boil. I begin winding like mad and boom, a huge boil and I am on. It goes on a huge run trying to reach bottom! I battle the fish for a few minutes when it suddenly pulls free. WTF....rocked, broken line??? Oh...broken hook! Man those things can pull. Just about then my dad gets bit on bait and a few boils erupt around the boat. A minute later and tony is hooked up on iron. I get another hit on iron and then my bait rod goes off...that's right we've got a triple going!!! Unbelievable!!!!!! It was quit a circus, but amazingly the fish stayed in their separate corners and we didn't have a single tangle...eventually landing all three
My dad took the day off the next day so Grant from Alberta could come out with us. It ended up being a gorgeous day and my best day yellowtail fishing ever! I asked Grant the day before if he'd ever caught a big fish and he said "Yea...about a 3' pike!" Acting like he's caught big fish before...well he was a little shocked when I handed him his first yellowtail and he proceeded to pull with all his might on that thing for 15 minutes!!! He was very impressed! We ended up landing 14 fish that day (only kept 4) and lost probably another 5 or 6. Unbelievable fishing. We decided that Friday would be our last day fishing and it turned out that the Cortez planned it that way for us too. We made it out the next day, but it was snotty and quickly turned nasty by 10 a.m. We had 6 fish in the box by then and left with white caps beginning the build. Pulled the boat when we got in, cleaned the fish, ate a last round of fish tacos and loaded the boat for the long haul back home. We hung out the rest of that day as the wind continued to build...perfect timing I thought. I always hate to leave a calm Cortez...if it is blowing I don't feel guilty leaving We left early the next morning and made it to the border in 12 hours and pulled into SLO by 2 a.m. Another great trip to Baja....until next year!!!

Blackie caught my first fish on fernan. My uncle used to fish commercial blue backs On Couer d' Alene Lake and smoke them. Best dam fish to eat with some beer. My family has been up there since it was fort Sherman. I lived there in the late 50's early 60's Our school has ice-cycles about 6 ft long and 12 inches in diameter. I think that school is still there it was called Winton. |

Hugh I saw Raymond and told him I have an electric reel that has a hell of a lot of line on it. He can use it for the 600 ft drop next time. I'm going to get it tomorrow or wed. and see if it will plug into his boat. he asked what I wanted for it. I told him nothing after all we go on his boat. |

well, dinner went well. squid were cleaned on the boat and placed on ice. i understand you can boil for 30 sec then pull off the thin skin on each side but we fillet it off. then i cut into 3/16 thick slices, soaked in water 15min, changed water soaked again, then pounded ( i used an old chicken fried steak pounder that didnt smash but cut 1/4 inch slices a 1/4 inch apart) soaked one more time in milk 15 min. egg battered with PANKO crumbs. like anything fresh, the taste is a bit richer but not bad. i ate one patty ala carte and the other sliced and made a great salad. as for a virgs trip, i would recommend. . i have fresh meat in the box and can't wait to use some of the tenicles i saved for bait next year. |

Humbolt squid cleaning. Take a look at the steak each side has a thin solid white line. Fillet this off each side about 1/6 of an inch. You will find this fillet to be very tough and string like. This part makes very good rock fish bait cut into 1/4 inch strips and placed on swimbait hook. After this you hardly have to pound at all. Dip in eggs then in Italian bread crumbs bake 10 minutes each side 350 on cookie sheet. Sprinkle some parmasain cheese for added flavor. Everyone at our house rave about the texture and flavor. Fry steaks in olive oil for burgers. Best regards, Joseph Anderton BBQ. |

Try dipping the pieces of squid in boiling water for about 20 seconds to make the membrane removal easier. |

i am giving the squid a try tonight. thanks for all the responces. i caught my fishing friend ( raymond ) putting super glue on his hooks then sliding his grub on. damn if they didnt stay on better than without. i think they make a special glue just for this but i haven't seen it. |

aloha kid thats a good trick I may have to try that , all tho the ewg walleye hooks do a good job. On cooking that squid , I cut the pieces about 8" square , make sure you take all the membrane off , place between to hand towels and smack it with a mallet until you break it down like abalone , then i cut in 1/2 strips and deep fry , I like the louisiana brand , new orleans style breading. Thats some good eating . Blackie |

A trick I used to use to keep my grubs on the hook in heavy surf was to thread some ultra fine copper wire through the eye of the hook, wrapping one end around the base a couple of times, then cutting off the line end an inch or so long. Then I would thread the grub on all the way up to the eye and wrap the wire a few times around the head of the grub, not tight enough to cut into it but enough to really hold it on good and tight. Virtually invisible to the fish, but really great at keeping the bait on. |

thanks stickman. thats what i keep hearing. they must not be the same squid we buy at the fish market. i dont know. i did read on the internet about the invasion of squid in monterey and there is some real concern. they can eat up to 20lbs of mass a day. the growth rate is a inch a week. if they didnt swim up with the warm water but breeding here , we have a huge problem. |

AP – In this undated photo provided by the International Game Fish Association shows Manabu Kurita of Aichi, … .Fri Jan 8, 9:45 pm ET DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A man was being credited with tying the 77-year-old world record for catching the biggest largemouth bass. The International Game Fish Association announced Friday that it had confirmed the 22-pound, 4-ounce fish caught by Manabu Kurita. The Florida-based group said Kurita caught the fish July 2 on Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake. Kurita's fish tied the record of George Perry, who caught his bass on Georgia's Montgomery Lake on June 2, 1932. Kurita used 25-pound test line and a live blue gill as bait. |

thank you JON for the numbers on the humboldt squid. first drop was down to 600ft and a job to reel in but just as you said the others followed and the rest of the catch was only 120ft below the boat. we ended the day with 33. word has it that they are very salty when cooked . does anyone have cooking tips beyond soaking in milk or water. Are these the same squid they sell in resturants? |

JEFF My bro and I have had some real fun days on fernan , one summer we were out there catching perch for a fish fry, we would take the bluegill and cripple them so they would thrash on the surface , the osprey would almost take them out of your hands, I have some awasome pictures of them almost in the boat. Nice place to visit just could not live there. Blackie |

Was a washing machine for sure .. BIG lump with the wind holding it up, made for near impossible conditons on the beaches I stopped at. Headed North with every intention on giving it a go up towards Pico and Simeon but hung a right back over the hill instead. And in all honesty Blackie .... There have been days that I have switched from the GULP to the old standard and it turned the day around the next cast. I also switched to the 4" FAT SANDWORM NERIES (usualy in CAMO) and break it in pieces. Perch derby .... been there done that, I think I won the most empty beer cans the last few times...... But kinda hard to remember |

Wind was pushing 15kts plus offshore at 7am this morning. Gave it a go anyway .... Surf up, wind and dirty water pushed me back into the truck by 8am. As for drying GULP: Did it often fishing the tourny circuit for bass.... rig up 3-5 hours prior and had GREAT results. For perch ... I dont know, I truely dont think it matters. I have had Motor Oil plastic outfish GULP in the surf 10/1. But, play with it ... GULP is a great bait!! |

We did make the run up to Moss and except for a fast drift early the water and weather were fantastic. We fished the canyon north of the jaws for 16 humbolt squid and we probably lost that many. Most were caught in 800' of water but after the first hookup they came up and we finished the day catching them on the drop at about 150'. I still need to perfect the cooking prep though. They need to be rinsed often in fresh water before cooking. Thanks for the help cleaning them Hugh. |

Hello friends and fisherman <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/photo-gallery/category/7-boat?lang=en> It has been a while since I had a chance to send you all a report from the Royal Charlotte Bank. I have arrived back in Canavieiras with the Camargue <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/boat.html> , a 39.5 ft Cabras Mars, and we are set up for fishing with a new operation called Majestic Marlin Brasil. This is a family business that will provide you with organized and private fishing trips, weather you are chasing the large majestic blue marlin or a day light tackle and jigging. <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/photo-gallery/category/8-accommodatio n?lang=en> Lea and myself know what fisherman want and have provided you with a larger more comfortable boat that will make fishing here a memorable experience, accompanied with Casa La Ma <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/accommodation.html> , our private accommodation, this will make it an unforgettable trip. We had the Annual Marlin Fishing Tournament on the 19th and 20th of November, with 9 boats participating. Fishing aboard the Camargue was Catarina Zanaga, husband Eduardo Costa and son Tiago. We had great fishing but no luck catching. <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/photo-gallery/category/10-2009-novemb er?lang=en> The first day we raised 5 blues had 3 bites but jumped them all off, two where in the 500 and 650 lb range; we also saw a large blue marlin tailing down sea, the fish was around the 1000 lb mark, we got the baits to her but she would not bite after 5 mins of baiting her. Most of the boats raised 3 or 4 marlin and Roberto Costa & friends fishing on his boat Dodo IV were in the lead with one blue released and one weighing 453 lb or 206 kg. The second day out Camargue raised 8 blues around 300 to 400 lb, we got bites from 3 and Eduardo released 1 around 300 lb. Most boats raised 2 or 3 marlin the second day, Rafaela caught one that weighed 498 lb or 226 kg and Dodo IV released two more blues to win the tournament. Pitleo came second and Rafaela third place. Mauricio Pettoruto from Switzerland was here to try marlin fishing for the first time, we raised 3 blues, caught and released all 3; the largest was around 450 lb the other 2 were around 300 lb. <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/photo-gallery/category/10-2009-novemb er?lang=en> Dr Sergio Cordoni and friends from Foz do Iguacu where here to try marlin fishing for the first time. The first day out was slow for most of the day, at 3.30 a large marlin came up on the short lure and turned and attacked the other short lure, it massive head and shoulders came out of the water, this was a marlin around 1000 lb; it went down and turned north and stayed down after 1 ˝ hours, we had the double out of the water, the fish was 40 ft away and there was a lot of colour under the boat, but this was as close as she was coming. We fought her for another hour and then she made a run deep and died in 600 m of water, the southerly current pushed us back on the edge and cut the line on the bank. The next 2 days the weather was a little rough and the boys opted to take it easy and not fish. Rogerio Andrade and family where here to try their luck marlin fishing, with 3 days fishing we only raised 4 marlin, had one bite and no luck catching it. They caught some Dorado and Wahoo. <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/photo-gallery/category/11-2009-decemb er?lang=en> <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/photo-gallery/category/11-2009-decemb er?lang=en> Charles and Bev Holloway were here to fish on their new boat, fishing a couple of days Charles and Bev raised a few marlin and released one around 300 lb; Bev was kept busy catching Dorado and Wahoo for dinner and tuna for sashimi. <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/photo-gallery/category/11-2009-decemb er?lang=en> <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/photo-gallery/category/11-2009-decemb er?lang=en> Bruno Vincintin was back in Canavieiras and the first day we went to the drill platform and had good fishing. Bruno got a bite early and we had a very acrobatic marlin on, unfortunately the fish got the leader around its tail, dove deep, the fish was now being pulled backwards which drowned the marlin; it weighed 375 lbs. We raised another marlin soon after around 500 lb but no bite. We did some jigging close to the platform and caught lots of big eye tuna around 15 lbs. Later in the afternoon we raised a fish around 800 lb but once again no bite. The second day the current slowed, the water temperature went up and the fishing slowed at the platform so we went jigging on the edge; caught Dorado, Wahoo and Amberjack. The last day we fished the Charlotte Bank, the current had stopped so this was not good for marlin, we did not raise a marlin but Bruno caught a bunch of Wahoo and Dorado. <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/photo-gallery/category/11-2009-decemb er?lang=en> Tim Thomasson was back to fish the Royal Charlotte Bank over the new year; the first day out he released 2 blues one around 400 lb and the other 300 lb, we had another bite from a fish around 500 lb but no luck staying hooked. The next day we fished the bank, raised 2 marlin and 2 sailfish but they were just slapping at the baits, not hungry. The 3rd day we fished the platform again and raised 2 blues, one around 500 lb attacked the short lure but didn`t stay hooked. The last day was on the bank again and the first day of the New Year. We raised 3 blues and a sailfish, Tim released 2 blues, one with no Bill, around 120 lb and another around 250 lb; Tim got another bite from a fish around 500 lb but did not stay on. We raised a sailfish as well that day. As you can see I started the season late this year and have not seen a run of marlin that we are use too, they might have come through in October but no one was marlin fishing here. I believe we will have good fishing over the next 3 months, raising up to 3 or 4 marlin a day and most of the fish are over 500 lb at this time off year. The weather has been good most of the time here with calm to moderate seas. The bottom fishing and jigging has been good on the bank as well for those of you that like to jigg. <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/photo-gallery/category/4-canavieiras? lang=en> Please check out our website http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br and give Lea or myself a call to put a package together for you to come and enjoy our great fishing on a comfortable boat, the Camargue. Relax for a while in tranquil Canavieiras <http://www.majesticmarlin.com.br/getting-here.html> and let that stress just disappear. Lea and I hope that everyone will have a prosperous new year. Tight lines to all.Capt Shawn Wallace. |

WELCOME LADYANGLER Rosy rocks are the rocks that are right in front of the outlet of SANTA ROSA CREEK in Cambria , on moonstone drive. There is a parking area with a restroom, fresh water wash down for your gear, and access to the beach via stairs The very best time to fish is the last two hours of the incoming tide , and maybe an hour on the outgoing. I fish strictly the two inch gulp bloody and the camo , both worked fine yesterday , I buy the buckets , seem to last longer than the packs . Good luck with the name of MICHELLE you gotta be a great fisherwomen, maybe we will run into each other some time on the beach. Blackie |

DRAGON I like you never left the state , but did do 22 years in the mountains , above SONORA , and I was missing the ocean also , being born and raised in the bay area , fished all the time in the oakland estuary and off flyshacker beach for them stripers in the surf , then moved to the delt and was a live aboard for 18 years, so I would have to have the ocean of some sort close . I must be reaching the grouchy old fart era of my life because the , gross mismanagement of our fisheries is just going down hill at a steady pace , If we want fresh SALMON were gonna have to get them from ALASKA for now they have not stuck there head in the politicans asses , If the gov could figure out how to steal there water he would do it , I got no problem with vegetables but fish need water to. I dont know the solution , but you know the saying , THEM WERE THE GOOD OLD DAYS , Well guess what they sure in the hell were. |

AMEN!!! Blackie... Its hard to stay positive with our State Leaders selling us down the River, As Darby so eloquently put it "Awhore'n"... But I will say this... I was Calif. born & raised... And I have left the state 2x in my adult life for the very frustrations that we hear on this board... I Can tell you, Im back and won't be leaving again... I missed the Ocean to Much... The grass is always greener... Untill you spend some time in that Greener grass... But I know your pain... East Cape?...Costa Rica?...Maybe????? |

Salmon didn't make the big fall comeback in Central Valley rivers that anglers and nature lovers yearned for, raising the likelihood of a third year of fishing restrictions. Some areas saw more fall-run chinook return from the ocean to the Sacramento River and its tributaries. This includes the American River, where the state's Nimbus Hatchery spawned about 40 percent more salmon in 2009. But the run as a whole seems likely to turn out the same or slightly smaller than in 2008, which was the smallest year ever recorded. "We are really upset," said Dick Pool, president of Pro-Troll Fishing Products, a Bay Area manufacturer of salmon fishing tackle. "Every appearance is the fall run returns this year (2009) may set a new record low." The Central Valley fall chinook is arguably the most important salmon run on the West Coast. It makes up virtually all of the commercially harvested salmon in California and Oregon. The run's poor condition led regulators to ban all commercial salmon fishing in both states in 2008 and 2009. Recreational fishing was banned in 2008 and severely limited in 2009. The cause is likely two-pronged: • Poor ocean conditions, which reduced food supplies. • Problems in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, where young salmon contend with pollution, water diversions and non-native predators on their migration to the sea. Studies have estimated only about 8 percent of young salmon released in the rivers survive to reach the ocean. The biggest disappointment in 2009 came on Battle Creek, where the number of fish spawned at the Coleman National Hatchery was about 35 percent less than in 2008. Coleman is normally the biggest single producer of salmon in the Central Valley. The hatchery releases young salmon in two groups each April, 10 days apart. Few of those released in late April of 2007 returned in 2009. "Overall, it was a pretty poor return. The expectation was we were going to see more fish," said Jim Smith, project leader at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which runs the hatchery. "Unfortunately, we can't find what I would call a 'smoking gun' to tell us what caused the differentiation." There may be more worrisome news in the numbers. Early analysis of new tagging data suggests the fall run consists mostly of hatchery salmon, and that wild-spawners are a small share of the modern-day population, said John Williams, a consulting hydrologist in Davis who has analyzed the initial data. This finding could result in the fall run being protected under the federal Endangered Species Act, which could halt fishing permanently and add another layer of limits on California water supplies. The fall run is the only Central Valley salmon species not already protected by the act. "What it looks like, really, is hatchery fish are not supplementing naturally produced fish; they are replacing them," said Williams, author of a comprehensive scientific review of Central Valley salmon. Hatcheries were built to replace salmon production lost when dams excluded fish from historic upstream spawning areas. They succeeded for decades in producing bountiful salmon populations. But more recent studies show that hatcheries gradually weaken a species, producing fish with less genetic diversity that are less able to fend for themselves in the wild. State and federal fisheries managers in 2007 began tagging a portion of hatchery salmon to track their success. Each fish had its adipose fin removed and a tiny coded wire tag inserted into its nose. When the fish is caught, the missing fin is a prompt to recover the coded tag, which records where and when it was bred. A full review of those data won't be done until later this year. But after an early look, Williams surmises hatchery salmon now make up 90 percent of the fall run. "At this point it's clear that if you didn't have the hatcheries, you couldn't have a fishery," he said. Doug Obegi, an attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council, said no one wants to see the fall run on the endangered species list. His group successfully sued to impose stricter controls on Sacramento Basin water management to protect salmon. He said the new rules could help salmon as they begin to take effect this year. But the rules are being challenged by water users who fear cutbacks in their supplies. "The fall run has become the backbone of the state's fishery and it would really become a disaster if it was allowed to fail and be listed under the Endangered Species Act," Obegi said. "I really hope we haven't gotten to that point yet." There were two bright spots in the 2009 salmon run. First, the salmon that did return seem to carry more eggs. As a result, the hatcheries appear likely to meet their production goals for young fish. Second, the number of 2-year-old fish returning to spawn, called "jacks," was better than in 2008. Most of the run each year consists of 3-year-old salmon. But some are 2-year-olds, which often indicates how many 3-year-olds will return the following year. "Hopefully that's a good sign for next year," said Anna Kastner, manager of the state Department of Fish and Game Feather River Hatchery. __________________ I vow to fight the AG misinformation. |
