Has anyone tried for salmon out of MB lately? I'm going to be doing a lot of halibut fishing in the next 3 wks, and trying for squid/seabass too, so I'm trying to decide whether to stow my downriggers for the season. |

Mercury News Aug. 4, 2004 Marine protection program revived FOUNDATIONS STEP IN TO HELP STATE SET UP RESERVES By Paul Rogers Mercury News In a decision cheered by environmentalists and marine biologists, the Schwarzenegger administration has decided to restart plans to create the nation's first network of protected marine reserves off California's coast, eight months after shutting the project down for lack of money. ``We have a responsibility to act to try to improve the health of our oceans,'' said California Resources Secretary Mike Chrisman in an interview Tuesday with the Mercury News. ``This is a high priority for us.'' The first area scheduled to have specific maps for such ``no-fishing zones'' -- with a draft plan now due out by March 2006 -- will be the central coast, Chrisman added, which is generally described as the area from San Francisco to Hearst Castle. Chrisman said he will name a ``blue-ribbon panel'' to oversee the issue by next month, along with a 25-member science advisory group. They will hold public meetings and study the biology and economics of reserves, with the goal of putting them in selected areas across all state waters out to three miles offshore by 2011. The plan was required by a landmark 1999 state law, the Marine Life Protection Act. It has been cited by marine biologists as a national model -- and perhaps the best hope of arresting the steady decline of dozens of types of fish in California waters. In January, however, Chrisman sparked controversy when he confirmed the state Department of Fish and Game would halt the plan, saying the state lacked the $2 million needed to finish it by a 2005 deadline. One Stanford University biologist described the move as ``like not making a car payment because you can't afford the stamp.'' Now, however, a public-private partnership has brought the program -- which has drawn lawsuits and protests from some fishing groups in the past -- back to life. Details are still being worked out, but several private foundations have pledged roughly $2.5 million a year over the next three years to pay for scientific studies, public meetings and other costs. This year, that money will be augmented by $500,000 in state funding. The contributing foundations are the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, in Los Altos; the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, in San Francisco; and the Homeland Foundation, in Laguna Beach. ``California's oceans are in trouble,'' said Michael Mantell, an attorney for the Resources Legacy Fund, a Sacramento non-profit coordinating the donations. ``The foundations care a lot about the oceans' future and want to see sound science brought to bear on their long-term management.'' Less than 1 percent of U.S. marine waters are off limits to fishing. But several major studies, including a 2001 report by the National Academy of Sciences and the 2003 Pew Oceans Commission report, have recommended reserves as a key tool in reviving ocean species depleted by pollution, overfishing and other threats. ``Historically, we have managed resources on a species-by-species basis,'' said Mark Carr, an associate professor of marine ecology at the University of California-Santa Cruz. ``We realize now that you just can't manage for one species.'' The Pew report, for example, found that studies of more than 100 marine reserves in the past 15 years show that allowing whole sections of the ocean a rest from fishing usually results in more and larger fish, which produce more larvae. ``This is common-sense stuff,'' said Warner Chabot, vice president of the Ocean Conservancy, an environmental group in San Francisco.``Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mike Chrisman are giving us an ocean ethic that people will remember 100 years from now,'' he said. Some fishing groups said they will oppose any effort at banning fishing along the state's 1,100-mile coastline. Experts have estimated that perhaps 10 to 20 percent of state waters would need to be placed off-limits. ``There's not enough science. We need better and more thorough data,'' said Bob Strickland, president of United Anglers of California, a sport-fishing group in San Jose. ``We don't want closed areas. We don't think they are necessary. ''Strickland said tougher rules on commercial fishing such as bottom trawling would accomplish more, and that costs to patrol no-fishing zones would be prohibitive. In 2002, the California Fish and Game Commission approved new rules declaring 175 square miles of state waters around the Channel Islands off Santa Barbara as a protected network of marine reserves. The largest such ``no-fishing zone'' on the West Coast, the move was designed to give endangered white abalone, rockfish, kelp forests and an array of other species a chance to recover from years of fishing. |

That is a home made job using the SSTs from CoastWatch (I think that is where terrafin gets theirs too) and forcing them into a free program called GPS track maker. You have to capture the coastwatch shots, edit them to define the lat/long, then crank it into track maker. It is a little complicated to get it all set up but then it is not too bad. It is handy because they can be posted without any infringments. I still vote for Terrafin, their program has many nice features. |

Now that the wind is up ..Looks like there is blue water from the tip of the donut up and out. Hard break that was outside the 1908 looks to be pushing in. If the weather comes down after the weekend we will run midweek. Coverage?

Harrell ... My email is locking up because its full with the information you wanted. Tomorrow morning I will either post it here or get it to you via email. Also some very good information concerning the green on the SeaWifs as to what it means and how to determine if its "good" water or not. I'm glad Harrell got us all to start looking at this information because I truely believe that its going to help all of us in the longrun. There is a big thank-you going out to a member of Allcoast web site that is helping us with chart overlays for our area with the SeaWif information. This information will be shared with whomever wants it, just shoot me an email. Good things coming ...... I feel it! Dustin |

Nice fish Stacey! Got the SeaWifs image this morning and the water in our area is much cleaner than the last shot. No "red" at all and much less "yellow" but there is still "green" out to 60-70nm. Still not sure how dirty/clean the green scale is. Info for rockfishing; F&G site says 180 ft is ok for the month of August. |

More on SeaWiFS; As Bob said we got good SST's last eve/night and now we need a good color picture which should happen today. Just checked the visible satellite and the fog has cleared out early and we should get a SeaWifs pass in about an hour which will be in a later Seawifs post tonight or tomorrow. The Seawifs satellite is a sun syncronized noon scan which means we need clear skies at around noon in our area in order to get a good shot at ocean color. Looking at the SST; the closest and best (imho) break is at 35:35 & 122:05, about 60nm. The area SW of the 1908/1978 about 5 miles has good potential and I will be watching to see if it is coming our way. Now the bad news ! The computer models show 15-35 kts of wind starting tuesday for most of the week. |

Virg's caught 11 albacore over 100 mi out. The weather was rough today on the outside. One boat out of Monterey caught 3 albies 35 to 40 mi west.We got a good clear SST picture and it looks like 50 mi west of Morro Bay has a decent temp break but I didn't get a water clearity picture so can't tell if the water is green. I'll be rockcod fishing Sunday. Bob |

Graylight, I applaud your efforts and your long run to prospect for the lft. We turned around early and didn’t push the 60-70 miles that you did. I tried to call you on the radio, but was out of range. It seems that there are a few of us that are willing to expend the time and fuel to go search for the albacore. Most people operate on the “second mouse gets the cheese” method of fishing or don’t have the range to fish outer waters, understandable. I wish more people were on the hunt. The availability of bait is a factor for those of us that prospect for lft consider when making a trip. We need to keep them in business/happy for people to look for the fish. Please be generous with them. A tip of 10-20$ is not unreasonable, more if you can afford it. I’ll be fishing Leffingwale this Sunday for rockfish in the little aluminum. I hope to hang a big ling or hali. I’ll post. Stacey

yeah, we would rather fish outta Morro Bay and live at home instead of Camping on the boat in Moss landing. Hope that water turns blue and a harder break forms. We sure like fishing at Winchells instead of the Davidson, Rod, etc... the help you got last year was probably from Jocelyn. He was second ticket on the Ichiban last year. late. cm. |

Also thank you to Darby and Virg's landing as well as the captain of the Princess last Saturday for sharing info. Something to be said about our area up here when the sport boats and privates can work together. Lets hope that water cleaned up for the weekend and it busts wide open! Dustin

The temp break almost due west of Monterey is killer. Not like the mushy stuff down here. We have been mooching salmon on the Ichiban with mixed results. Just aching for tuna cause we're hearing jigboat chatter on the radio. It's seventy miles offshore to the area where the jigboats are fishing, but the tempbreak is only about sixty. I hope we have tuna on the donut this year, but if it's like last year, we're gonna stay in Moss Landing (where the fish are!) Good luck to the party boats and skiffs goin tuna prospecting this weekend. late. cm. |

Jay: Here is the link. Just set the zoom and click on the area of interest. The image can be changed from "chlorophyll" to "true ocen color" but the true color image is not much use because of the resolution. The chlorophyll is much better but still the scale, even at 64 zoom, is pretty wide. So it is difficult to get an accurate lot/lon. On 64 zoom the image is about 100 miles square but with a scale and a bearing overlay you can get pretty close. On the chlorophyll image the colors range from purple = deep blue and crystal clear to red = green and dirty. Based on the observed inputs that I received over the weekend my conclusions are that the yellow/red areas indicate "dirty" water and the blue/purple areas indicate "clean" water and green is probably a greenish color but fairly clean. This is all preliminary and as time goes by we will get better at reading the images. The term "dirty" really means a high concentration of phytoplankton which in reality is a good thing because that is what feeds the bait fish. http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi/seawifs_subreg_l2.pl The color scale is from purple = .01 mg /m3 to red = 50mg/m3 with green around 1mg/m3 Let me know if you need anymore info. |

We went out of MB on Saturday for the Halibut and ended the day with three fish. We were just north of Cuyucos in 40 feet of water. Both Virg's boats were working the same area and I heard that they had four fish on one boat. At least there is something to catch until the rock fish are open again. Hope the tuna move a little closer soon. Thanks to all who are keeping the updates comming on the LFT. Fuel is much too expensive now to run a bunch a zero trips for tuna. |

Follow up on the SeaWiFS chlorophyll and true color images. I have heard that there is a commercial site like Terrafin in developement for this data that will be available to us with much better resolution. Based on the images and observations that I received this weekend, I feel even without the better resolution it is a very good tool. It won't tell us where the fish are but it will tell us where they are not ! I posted that the water at the 1908 was green and later found out that it was clean. Green water would have contradicted the data on the SeaWiFS image but clean water would have confirmed it which it did. There were reports of water color in the Monterey area that were also in concert with the chlorophyll images. I will be watching the images closely from now on to see if, when and where the water cleans up before our bigger "September" albacore get here ! Thanks to all the guys that went looking and for their inputs. |

We will be running for LFT early Saturday morning. Hoping to be on the grounds at daybreak, Depending on what time we get bait. Dustin, I will try to make contact with the bait guys on Friday and I’ll shoot you a call or email to coordinate coverage. Harrell, I would certainly appreciate any input you might have regarding our hunt as I still haven’t spent the time to learn how to extract/interpret color data from the seawif site. I’ll shoot you a call with a report on our way back in (when we get back into cell phone range.)

Follow up on the SeaWiFS image. The scale is from .01 (purple) to 50 (red) milligrams of chlorophyll / cubic meter of water . The green area is about 1,the yellow area about 3 and the red is 10-50. I spent some time comparing the Terrafin SST to the SeaWiFS image trying to get a lat/lon comparison. The plume of warm water on the SST overlays almost exactly with a green area on the SeaWiFS image that pushes into the yellow/red areas. So my conclusion is that the plume of water coming in from the donut is probably reasonably clean. Need onsite observations to verify if it is. Like Dustin says the weather still looks good for Sat. |

Guess just hoping that the plume of water that extends towards the PSL bouy heats up against that leading edge when the wind stops. Diablo forcast just lowered the wind for Sat-Sun to light-variable. |

I'm as anxious as the next guy, but this SST just doesn't excite me very much. While the water may be warm, there is no well defined break. |

http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi/seawifs_subreg_l2.pl This is the SeaWiFS site. There is an excellent picture of our area this morning. Go to the site , set the zoom factor to 32 and click on our area. Good clear picture of pretty dirty water !! On the color scale blue is clean and red is dirty, I think ! |

Terrafin just posted an SST image taken at 5pm today that really looks promising !! Especially since there has been 20+ kts of wind on it all day. There is a plume of 60 degree water starting about 20 nm out of Avila that is connected to the donut, the 1908 and probably all the way to China. Waiting to see the SeaWIFS chlorophyl picture to get a reading on how clean it is. This is just about what the SST looked like last June (03) when we were catching albacore. The UCAR computer models show the wind coming down friday so there should be an opportunity to check it out this weekend. Avila will be crowded due to the halibut derby. |

Fished out of PSL today for halibut. Had great 4-6 inch chovies, no wind and great weather, but no fish. We fished from the bay down to Shell beach for not even a pick up. The water was pea green with 1-2 feet of vis. Tons of bait everywhere. Dustin, Going out of town this weekend, but would be ready to go tuesday. Good luck if you go on Sunday. best fishes, steve |

Latest SST looks promising ..... with the NW winds coming down after wed that 58-59 degree water that is wrapped around the PSL bouy could be warming up. As Harrell mentioned no real "hard" breaks ....but 60 degree water on the donut .... wind down to 10kts by sunday. Will make the call night before we leave ....any coverage this weekend? |

Was planning on making a run outside towards the donut for a look around on Saturday. With the wind still in the forcast may have to make a change of plans. Are the squid boats still up north towards San Simeon? Possibe look around for WSB if I have to call off the outside stuff. Dustin |

SST/weather/albacore Pretty good SST last eve but still no hard breaks. The elbow area looks the best at about 60 miles. The water is warm enough with a lot of 60 + but don't know if it is clean enough out there. The reports this weekend indicated green water out to 25 miles and beyond. The wind is forecast to blow until fri-sat and then it looks good into next week. Never heard anymore about the carcasses at MB so figure it was San Diego or elsewhere fish that were just cleaned there. Albacore are being caught from the guide north with Oregon wide open. Our albacore will probably show up in September when the wind and upwelling settle down which is usually what happens here in normal years, if there is such a thing "normal". |

Going up North this weekend for salmon, wanted to know if it would be better to go out of Moss or Santa Cruz? And also what are the hot setups to use? Maybe even some headings to take? |

Thanks Dustin She has some experience but is new to us. I really liked my last boat but just couldn't pass up the deal we go on her. This will be a lot better boat for taking my kids out in a couple years. She has twin AQ125's and 280 outdrives. Not my favorite gas engines but they do sip fuel... 2nmpg at 20knots. That's close to what my little boat got and this one weighs twice as much. Still have a bit of refiting work to do on her but she's going to be sweet! Can't wait to get tuna blood on her! Let me know if you want a ride some time. Good luck Sat! -------- Eric --- Tyee ---- Farallon 25 |

Josh The bechold bait rotators are a relativly new product available directly from Jerry Bechold here: http://www.fishcatcher.com/FishCatcher/fishcatcher.html#BULLET_BAIT Great, easy to use holder that gives the bait a fantastic tight spin. Puts out lots of flash! I used the medium size saturday and it is perfect for medium chovies or herring. Color didn't matter much but the orange and the clear got bit a little better. These things are hot! Give Jerry a call and let him know I sent you. I was able to get a great discount on 5 of them ( about the price of 2 RSK's) Will be ordering more!!! -------- Eric --- Tyee ---- Farallon 25 |

Moss limits for 5 Sat Long day... woke up at 12:45 am for the tow over. First fishing trip on the new boat. Arrived at the ramp at 4:30 to find a 1/4 mile long line and discover we left the chovies in the freezer at home. Line went quick and the guy at the ramp had some nice 5-6" herring so we were in business headed out the jaws into the fog by 5:30. Crawled out to 49/49 and dropped in on scattered bait had scratch fishing for 4 fish by 8:30 trolling up to 49/50ish. Decided to troll down to the south canyon wall and discoved the fleet parked about 2 miles out in the middle of the canyon. Continued past to the south edge and followed the edge toward the stacks. Found a nice concentration of fish about 1/4 mile inside the cans and had a steady pick of low teens. Devil fish came on a tripple hook-up at 11:00. 10 fish to 16lb dropped a few. Nothing big but nice for the first trip with a bunch of rookies. 1 fish on watermelon apex 3 on red RSK and 6 on the Bechold Rotator... nice rig! ordered them late monday afternoon and had them in the mail tuesday. Thanks Jerry! Great day on the water! Best way to break in a boat! ------------ Eric --- Tyee ---- Farallon 25

---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Want to fish moss and need to know directions and if there is any motels close to stay. Josh, to get to moss landing from San Luis, take hwy 101 north to hwy 183 in salinas. Take 183 thru castoville to hwy 1 go north on 1 to moss landing the launch is 1/4 mile north of the bridge and the power plant. The line for launching runs along the South bound shoulder. There is a packing facility a couple of miles north (and on the left) with a wide turn around area. There is a machine for launch tickets near the bathrooms. The closest hotel would be the holiday inn express in watsonville (parking would be tight with a boat.) Your best bet may be the Best Western Salinas valley inn (not the bestwestern john jay which is within a couple hundred feet) Both hotels are on the North bound Market Street exit near the in-n-out burger. Make sure you lock up your gear if you decide to stay in either town. good luck, Stacey

I went looking for albacore on saturday south about 45 miles towards the Rodriguez with no luck. I was relying on thursday's SST which was unfortunately outdated by Saturday. Terrafin had a good shot on friday night, but for some reason didn't post it until sometime saturday. Yesterday's and today's satellite shots show a broad area of promising water (60+ degrees) parallel to our coastline. It's about 50 miles out off Morro Bay and all points North, but extends in from the Donut towards Avila within easy range. The view is partially blocked, but it looks like if you left from PSL towards the donut, the water is showing 59 degrees as close as 20 miles and 60 degrees at about 30 miles. I'm not sure if that water is connected to the outside, but it definitely is connected at about 45 miles out to the donut. Someone needs to check this water out! |
