Good you didn't go out, those storms were bad.

Dan, this time of year, great Flukin' on the Staten Island side of the Bug Light. Depending on the tide, just go past the light and start your drift, not long ones. One day Sal and I caught 75 Fluke two keepers.

I also caught a lot of Fluke just inside the harbor, by those white buoys, need a weekday or a bad weather day, because of all the boat traffic.

My choice of bait is Gulp 4" natural shrimp.

If you feel I am telling you how to fish, let me know. Just trying to help.

Thanks Giorgio, I was on the spot there. It is the area where the channel splits. One goes to the Ambrose and the other wraps around that light house. I didnt make it out last night. Clouds and thunder. Planning on sat afternoon till the eve. Will work some fluke then in the eve try for bass.

Dan, the 17 can use to be 13. Two years ago they added four more buoys, so that made 13 17. When you come up on the light stay to the right, go east you can't miss the BIG GREEN BOUY and 17 feet is the depth I like over there.

We went out Friday night for Jamaica Bay Bass, nothing. Went out yesterday Flukin', we got 11 Fluke with only one keeper. The keeper was 21 inches and that's my second keeper of the year so far, two keepers out of five isn't bad.

Mike, you still out there?

Giorgio,

Is that 17 buoy off of west bank the one on the channel closer to the light house? Because right over there you have the channel splitting into two channels. As per the chart there is 17 ft water between the two channels. Last wed i gave it a shot between that 17 buoy and the light house.
I won't be going out sat. I will be out sun morn and hopefully mon. The high tide is at 1030 am sun.I have been trying to fish the incoming tides.

Giorgio,
I think I will be out sunday because of a Jersey function sat which I am trying to get out of. If you look at my sons pic you can see the water churning with the bunker behind him. We just got lucky, right place right time. We took the pics after catching our limit. As we were heading in we passed a bunch of boats anchored off the bug light. The fish were only a short distance from them but who knows if they ever knew.

Wed night report. went out about 3 pm with my son and his friend Frank. Hit west bank first, blue fish. Move closer to VZ, nothing. Started moving closer to GK when about 7 pm ran into a large school of bunker between GK bath house and new dorp about 1/4 mile out from beach. I started snagging bunker and started live linning them which I never did before. First fish on boat was a big blue, then WAM !! I boated a 23 pounder just shy of 40 in. We kept at it, the bunker just kept staying in the area. I was snagging bunker and they were bit in half by the time they got to the boat. Now I had to get into fish for my son and his buddy and wam! 2 more at 36 inches. It was getting dark and being new at boating was scared to drive in the dark so we headed in after 8 pm with the action still on. My biggest bass so far and first time live lining.
Giorgio, cant get out today, took the day off yesterday because of the root canal. Will be going out again probably sat. I will send you my cell # in your listed email. My email is k901nyc@yahoo.com.

Dan, Bunker, live if you can get them, if not chunks, the fresher the better and put out at least one head. Use clam if you want too. Me I like the last two hours of incoming and the first three hours of outgoing.

Nice looking boat.

My preference, I don't like CC, just for that reason.
My cousin had a CC, I never needed a shower, not fun when the water gets cold.

Thanks Giorgio,
I might be going out wed afternoon with my sons. At the west bank do you have a preferred tide, in or out? Bunker or clam this time of year?
MPB I should have known, I am originally from bklyn. The reason I bought my boat was because it has a new Etec 225 installed in 2006. I would have preferred a walk around but was scared with the older motors so I jumped on the CC. Great for fishing, plenty of fishing room, but no where for a potty for the girls and we get wet sometimes.

Dan, the Radar pier is in Jamaica Bay, Kennedy Airport, MPB is the Marine Parkway Bridge and I use Gulp Alive Shrimp (natural) for Fluke. Killies, Spearing and nice strips of Squidd are good also. I don't use anything but Gulp now.

My boat died last year, engine went. I wasn't going to give them $8,000.00 for a new one, not counting labor. Seven years ago I did a rebuild. I had a 357 I/O.

I have friends, one keeps his boat in Tottenville, Sal and Lloyd keep their boat in the creek at Lloyds house, at the farthest end you can go in Jamaica Bay. I kept my boat at Nichols.

We called our three boats, the fleet. We fished off each other's boat all the time. Now there is only two left in the fleet. See picture.

Will def hit west bank next time out. Might go out this Wed after a root canal??? This sat or sunday weather permitting. I had that in mind and remember you telling me about it. It was a little windy sat and depending on the direction my boat gets pretty wet. A couple of questions if you dont mind.
Where is Radar Pier?
MPB ?
Bait you used for fluke?
Where do you keep your boat?
Thanks!

Dan, you need to anchor up at West Bank this late in the season. This late Old Orchard will be all Blues, maybe a stray Striper.

Yesterday's report from Jamaica Bay:
We hit the Radar pier looking for Bunker, no Bunker. We bought five, then I grabbed three live ones. Got a runoff on my live one, cut in half by the yellow eyed demon. Right after that, Lloyd got hit and pulled in a nice 35" 14 lb. Striper. After a couple of hours we shot out to Floyd Bennett to Fluke fish, nothing, but my first Rockin' Robin of 2010. Lloyd wanted to go by the MPB, so I suggested we go on the other side where we use to Fluke fish. Bingo, hundreds of birds and Blues. So we chased blues for a while, picked up nine cocktails ( 2 - 3lbs.). I usually throw Blues back, but a friend wanted them for Shark bait. Then it was a Flukin'. The first drift, I grabbed a nice fat 22", 4 lb. Fluke.

So all in all, it was a pretty good day.
Sorry no pictures, Dolores took the camera to Florida and I forgot all about my cell phone camera.

Mike, If your coming from Tottenville, make a right on Cleveland Ave, go to the water, make a left and you can't miss Michael's, it's on the left. if you are coming from New Dorp, make the left on Cleveland. Joe is the owner and Dino is who I deal with. Don't forget Great Kills Bait shop right on Hylan, one block before Nelson, Paul is the owner. I think he has the best Killies if you want them for Fluke.

Dan, Fluke fishing for us started on Saturday, go get them.

Not going to Florida, she's going with her sister.

No drift. Anchored. looking back we probably should have stayed at Sandy hook. We caught a couple of big blues and probably would have eventually caught some bass. But you know what those blues do to your leaders. Man, there were a lot of boats at the hook. We anchored up right outside of that rip by the VZ at about 12 pm. Stayed there for about 3 hours for those 2 bass.
Both on clam.

The Weaks are starting to make a showing in Jamaica Bay, reports are from friends who have their boats there. A lot of the bait are coming back with fank marks.

I might be heading out to Jamaica Bay this weekend to try for, Stripers, Weaks and Fluke.

Saturday opens Fluke season.

Good luck this weekend to everyone who will be fishing, that's Mike, Stan, Dan, and everyone else.

I know the spot, I call it the RIP. It goes from 9' to 20', not many keepers though. If you want action that's the place to go. We run a drift between the islands and the Ambrose, big fish there and in Sept., big weakfish.

My daughter in law caught a 7.5 lb. 27 in. fluke off that bug light. There is a hole between hoffman island and the beach, shows shallow water on the map but is actually 20 ft or better. caught a lot over there but the only other keeper we got was off the channel aproach to the VZ past swinburn island.I am having a blast with the bass. Last year, my first boat season I didnt get any.

Thats Ok. scared me there a second. I am very conservation minded. Only keep what I will eat and hey, how much fish can you eat, right? I even cut my line on gut hooked fish. The only regs I have a problem with are the fluke at 21 inches. I caught and released so many 18 inchers last year and ended up with only 2 keepers for the season.

Thanks Giorgio. Because of your last report we anchored up in old orchard off the bath house yesterday afternoon. Took the day off from work because weekend weather looks bad. We had a great day. Snotty water though. We caught at least 15,stopped counting at about 10, with 3 keepers biggest at 33 in. Only 2 made it home because my buddy Vinny threw back a 30 incher thinking it had to be 31, arghhh! I got a hydra sport 24cc, I keep it at Mansion. Expensive there but I live in Dongan Hills so it is easier to get to and slips are really nice. I am gonna try that spot next time out, I have yet to get a really big one.bass

Dan, do you know where the West Bank Light is? If you do, find buoy 17 (green channel marker, was 13), come in off the buoy towards the light and anchor up right away in the 17'- 20' range. If you have live bunker, live line and chunk. I have always caught big fish there this time of year. I caught my 38-lber there.

Hey Dan, they aren't talking in code, all they are doing is just letting THEIR FRIENDS where they are. It's when you hear, call me on my cell, that's when they really don't want anyone to know where they are. You might hear phrases like the round house, the flats and things like that, but that isn't code that's just fishing spots. Me, I don't care if anyone knows where I am fishing. The reason I don't care is, FISH SWIM, here today gone tomorrow !!

Dan, my friend Fred might be out today, give him a shout (68), the boat is Living A Dream. Just tell him I (Capt. George)told you to give him a call. Where is your boat, or do you trailer it.

Mike, are you and your son gonna hit the conference house? As I said in my report, they were right up on the beach.

If I can get off from work I will be out tomorrow (fri)afternoon. Will be on channel 68. If anyone else goes out and wants can call me. More eyes out there at different locations better we might do. I hear guys talking all the time in code updating each other.

Went out yesterday and today, total was 4 Stripers, biggest 24 lbs, 10 Blues which were all returned. All fish were caught anchored off of Old Orchard on the incoming tide. Jack got two Stripers, Fred one on Wednesday, Richie got one today and me 0, just Blues!!!

Today the conference house was alive with Stripers, Blues feeding on tons of Bunker. Were on our way in and saw the action.

Mike, when you go to the conference house, go down to the beach, go to your right and you will see a big downed tree or a log on the beach, walk to it, look straight out and you will see the red buoy.

Mike, when you go there, go to the left and walk down to the red buoy and cast right there. I've anchored up there and caught Bass and Blues. The beginning of incoming and the start of the outgoing (two hours for each), they like moving water. Bunker is the usual, try clams.

My Son went out to The Conference House with
a couple of his friends and grabbed a decent sized Blue, He said it was about 15 inches, but he didn't bring it home, He released it
He told me that he didn't see anyone else catching anything, so I guess he got lucky because I wasn't there!

I am new to this and boating. 24 hydra sport CC. This is only my second season on the water and still learning. My son and I got our first bass saturday off of GK opposite the bath House. We worked the incoming tide and for 2 hours had no bites. Stuck it out because I saw some boats in the area pick up some shorts and reports the BA at GK was hot. Well we stuck it out and were rewarded. Between 1630 and 1830 hrs we landed 6 bass 27 to 33 inchers. Kept one for the table and released all others. All on clam. I would appreciate also receiving good information from you guys.striper

Went out on Saturday- 5 blues and 5 skates near Romer. The bite died right after the tide changes.

Is anything being done about the channel markers coming/going into GK?

The red can is almost on the beach.

Fished with Fred today, hard time finding Bunker. At the tide change, the Bunker showed up with Bass all over them, nothing, not a thing for us. Will try tomorrow, closer to NJ.

Bulkhead Road in GK is closed for fishing and crabbing til further notice
Apparently that Radium discovery awhile ago that closed the ballfields was spread over towards BK Road and now the NPS is running scared

As posted by the DEC, our Fluke REGS, - Summer flounder (fluke) 21" 2 fish - May 15 - June 15 / July 3 - Aug 17 as of 03.17.2010.

I just read in the New York Outdoor News on April 9, 2010, that the regs for the months to fish have been updated to May 15, 2010 through September 6, 2010.

Lets hope that's true, at least we can fish in one stretch, not split up.

I just checked the DEC again and they still have the originals posted.

Has anyone else heard about this change?

Mike, it's warming up, if you are looking for Stripers, go to the bath house in Great Kills. They are starting to pick them up on clams. A lot of schoolies on the clam, but if you can get some Bunker, use the heads.

That was last year, do not know what he's doing now.

Brian sold it to some kid who didn't know how to run a business. I went there twice to try and get bait, I knew then the place was done. The store never opened up on time, was always on the phone and wouldn't get off to wait on his customers.
