Subject: Fishing Report For October 13, 2000
Blue marlin fishing over the last month has been very steady with some good size fish tagged and boated.
We recently held our Tonga international billfish tournament in Vava'u at the end of September and the 5 boats taking part experienced good fishing.
This tournament is held over 5 days and is always popular with the anglers that participate.
While it is based mainly around tag and release there is also a section for the heaviest marlin for the tournament and the highest scoring billfish.
Heaviest blue marlin weighed 169kg on 37kg line class angler Sam Mossman.
Highest scoring blue marlin weighed 137.4 on 15kg line class angler Carl Angus
Highest scoring team tagged and released 3 blue marlin.
Kiwi Magic team took out the highest scoring blue marlin, the highest scoring angler, runner up in the heaviest billfish section the heaviest mahi-mahi and the highest scoring team in the mahi-mahi section.
Early this week a first time angler tagged and released a blue marlin while fishing on board Kiwi Magic estimated at 250kg.
Unfortunately two of our three F.A.Ds have come to the end of their engineered live span and have broken free and drifted off taking with them large numbers of mahi-mahi skipjack and small yellow fin tuna. The good news is work has started to replace these two F.A.Ds as well as constructing three shallow water sub surface F.A.Ds.

Subject: Fishing Report Vava'u
A consistence Blue Marlin bite has been the highlight of fishing in Vava'u over the past two weeks with all boats fishing getting their fair share of the action.
A memorabile days fishing was in store last week for a first time angler on his first day when the tally at the end of day ones fishing was, a Short Bill Spear fish at 24 kg, a Blue Marlin of 244kg, a 20kg bull Mahi-mahi and two Yellow Fin Tuna at 15 kg.
A good introduction in most peoples book and one I am sure he will remember. "Real beginners luck".
The F.A.Ds continue to provide great fishing with large schools of Mahi-mahi, Yellow Fin and the occasional Wahoo.
Trolling bridle-rigged skipjack in the area of the F.A.Ds has also produced a steady bite from blues and lures also continue to fish well.
Weather conditions have also been very favourable with light trades and calm conditions most days.

Fishing has been great is the best way to describe the fish action over the last two weeks.
Although we have had a mixed bag of weather conditions with windy and wet days we have also had the glassy calm, hot and balmy conditions with the fish on a hot bite.
Blue marlin have been plentiful most days and range in size from 50 to 200 kg with bigger fish reported lost on the strike either popping line on the initial strike or pulling hooks. Mahi-mahi are also present in good numbers with some very nice size fish landed, up to 20 kg.
Our three F.A.Ds are still producing excellent fishing for Yellow Fin Tuna and Mahi-Mahi, a long with great light tackle opportunities for the light tackle enthusiast.

Weather conditions have been unfavourable over the last three days for the off shore angler with strong S.E winds and rough seas. Early in the week the fishing was hot, with all sport fishing boats experiencing good catches of Yellow Fin Tuna, -Mahi-mahi and Blue Marlin. The F.A.Ds are still producing the best fishing, with very little action out wide. Drifting small live baits 70 meters deep on the Fads for Yellow Fin has been a very effective and has been producing almost a instance bite. Keith McKee.

Subject: Fishing Report Vava'u Tonga
Yellow fin Tuna fishing has been particularly hot this week with most days on the water producing 6 to 10 Yellow fin per boat the best of these weighing in at 63.8 kg (140lbs) a very nice condition fish that gave the angler the usual tough work out that these fish are renown for.
The F.A.Ds are continuing to provided the greatest fish action, with Mahi-Mahi and Yellow Fin the predominate species.
Blue Marlin were hard in the early part of the week but the last two days has seen a strong bite return with some nice fish reported lost on the strike and some smaller fish been tagged. Heaviest Blue weighed for the week tipped the scales at 145 kg (319lbs) and the heaviest Mahi-Mahi weighed 21kg (46lbs)
Weather conditions have also been very favourable with light trades and warm sunny days on the water.

Subject: ”Great fishing”
”Great fishing” are the words the charter fleet is using this week and phrases like “this is how it used to be back in the early 90s”, is the best way to describe the fishing in Vava’u. The weather and fishing has been exceptionally good with all the charter boats fishing experiencing excellent Blue Marlin, Mahi-mahi and Y Fin Tuna action. All three F.A.Ds are holding large numbers of Rainbow Runners, Mahi-mahi, small Skipjack and Y Fin Tuna with the Y Fin ranging in size from 3kg to 50 kg. Along with these smaller fish are a good number of Blue Marlin and although most of the Blue Marlin are small males 60-90kg, there are also some nice sized female fish out there. Live Skipjack or small Y Fin has been the preferred method for catching blues, but some days the preference is plastic and the only thing they will bite. Last week saw two first time anglers tag and release their first Blue Marlin while fishing on board Kiwi Magic. Keith McKee. For Kiwi Magic Charters, P.O. Box 153, Neiafu, Vava’u, KINGDOM OF TONGA. Subject: Fishing Report - Vava'u Tonga
The last week has produced some great fishing for first time anglers, a husband and wife team fishing on board Kiwi Magic for three days, while holidaying in Vava'u Tonga.
Day one was flat calm with no wind, bright sunshine and glass off conditions. "One of those days when the fish would not cooperate".
Day two dawned with fresh S.E Trades of 15-20 knots with choppy sea conditions. However the sea state was quickly forgotten when arriving at one of our three F.A.Ds a reel screamed with a hook up of a good size blue marlin, which 3/4 of an hour later in the fight pulled the hooks.
This action was followed when trolling resumed by two more marlin strikes that did not connect. But the end of day two had produced 8 x good sized mahi-mahi, 2 x small y fin tuna in the 10 kg range and anglers with a taste of Blue marlin fishing and a greater understanding of these as a sport fish.
Day three the wind had freshen over night and changed direction. This had not effected the fishing as both anglers brought a blue marlin a piece to the side of the boat estimated at 80 kg and went on to land 8 x 10kg y fin and 6 mahi-mahi. The biggest fish weighed this week weighed in at 158kg and was landed by a first time angler fishing on board the charter boat Hakula.

Subject: Fishing Report Vava'u, Tonga
Early in the week bad weather and high winds 30 knots and gusting to 40 knots kept the sport fishing boats in port, but the last 4 days has seen the weather shift back to S.E.trades in the 10-15 knots range producing good fishing conditions. Some nice size yellow fin have arrived in the last few days 60-70 kg. These fish have been spotted jumping clear of the water, but to date they have managed to elude fisherman as none have been brought to the scales. Also the hump back whales have arrived in Vava’u this week. They will spent the southern hemisphere winter giving birth and mating before returning in late November to the Antarctic for the summer months to feed on krill and plankton. These mammals provide a spectacular sight and are an added attraction for the sport fisherman as we encounter them most days on the water at very close quarters when fishing. Mahi-mahi fishing on the F.A.Ds has been excellent with good size fish and good numbers providing some great light tackle angling. Blue marlin and sailfish are also present and providing anglers fishing on board Kiwi Magic with some exciting fishing. Keith McKee.Kiwi Magic Charters, P.O. Subject: Good Fishing Action in Tongan Waters
The last week has produced good fishing action with most pelagic species available to be caught in Tongan waters on the bite. Blue marlin and sailfish have been steady along with good numbers of mahi-mahi and yellow fin tuna although the size of the yellow fin is still small 10-15kg. A visiting angler who was targeting dogtooth tuna was delighted when he landed a dogtooth of 45kg-99lb, which he has now mounted as a trophy catch. Weather conditions have been user friendly for the off shore angler, with light trades and warm weather. Keith McKee. Kiwi Magic Charters, P.O. Box 153, Neiafu, Vava’u, KINGDOM OF TONGA.
