i went fishin today and used a sabiki rig to catch some live bait
on the sabiki i caught 2 yellow spotted trevally at once.

i used them as bait and when trolling i saw some birds diving and chasing my bait haha

but then i anchored up at a point and casted out the live trevally on a freeline rig.

so the trevally was swimming around prbably 5 - 10 feet under water and then i got a hit

i reeled in after a while to see if my bait was fine and it was sliced clean right in half...clean cut

on the other half of the body that was still there i saw 3 shallow slash marks about 2 inches long as if someone got a knife and cut it

what do u think happened?

Hi KD,

Have you heard of /seen people catching fish in that area? If yes, than you may go ahead. else, my suggestion will be to try some other places. Try some breakwaters in and around dubai and you will surely catch something. Remember in angling every aspect is important and should be studied carefully. Angling is an ART not a SCIENCE. Patience is what you need. You are lucky to own a kayak. Look at me I dont even know how to swim. Leave alone the kayak. If you dont have patience then you should give up angling. Some one some where is catching a 27 kg cobia from the shore. If this had to piss off the rest of the anglers in UAE there would have been no anglers left. Read about angling and try and make sense out of it. One day for sure you will strike a big one and thats the time you will realize how good this sport is.

Cheers mate,

DeZZ

Ive been browsing the forum and have seen many people catching fish in ankle high water from the shore.

When i dock from the beach on my kayak, the water is very clear till about 40 meters out from the shore. When i look down i see sandy bottom with some random seawed and little rocks on bottom but water is very clear. I see small 2 inch baitfish though in about 1/2 a foot of water. I am at jumierah 1 open beach. There are several piers but i want to know if i can catch fish from the shore bottom fishing live bait and working lures, plastics, and jigs?
Can I?

The water is very clear till about 40 meters out and the depth is goes from ankle high till about 5 meters deep in terms of casting distance.

Can I?
remember, jumeirah 1 open beach, id be at the far left where almost always no people are swimming.

KD, I understand what you're going through. I've been there myself. Could you please provide more details about your tech and your gear ( Lines, rod, hooks, etc) how you are hooking your bait? the size of your hooks? you might be using a stiff rod and can't feel the bite??? provide all the details and maybe we can help you.
One last thing, Have you fished for LM Bass before? do you know the dog days where you see on the screen and they are not biting? you have apply the same or close fishing tech, think like a fish to catch a fish and dont worry about others. Your day will come.
Thanks
Rami

KD,
Have you asked the poeple the you've seen catching fish how they are cathing theirs? I fished in UAE and fished in US (Salt and freshwater). Like King said, observe and see how they are doing it. Sometimes, the samllest thing can make a whole lot of difference, Maybe you need to downsize or upsize your lures, or use different lines, etc ...to find find your magic formula and confidence to have a working system to catch fish, once you have that system figured out you can later imporove on it. That's all I can say. Keep going at it.
Thanks
Rami

Hey KD,

chill pal. Looks like you have been trying too hard. Sometimes you feel like nothing works, but you just need to be a bit more observant & as the saying goes "In Rome do as the Romans do", the same goes here.

Relax & enjoy your fishing, sooner or later something big will strike. Just keep at it, go through the basics of fishing & your luck will change.

Ive personally never caught a kingfish in Dubai, only in florida

The people i see though catching kings are on the jumeirah 1 open beach left breakwater/ pier. they cast out needlefish with weight and everthing and dont get snagged and catch kings but i go like double their dustance and all around where they cast on my kayak and get snagged in rocks 24/7 so i dunno i guess im bad luck. But ive also seen people spearfishing at the left pier who catch big trevally and kings as well. Ive fished all around where they fish and have used jigs and live needlefish and troled skirted ballyhoo and worked all kinds of lures but cant seem to pick up anything
ive been at this spot every weeknd at sunrise and dont catch shit. i think im gonna retire fishing and rack up the rods.

Hi KD,

Congratulations on catching lots of fish with garfish. I need to learn from the master. Perhaps one day ...... :o)

Monocle bream is ok to eat, but not that great too.

If you do catch a small one, let it go. dont kill it or waste your time catching them. Garfish are much easier to catch & good bait too. (something that I need convincing about).

till then I'll stick to ballyhoo, lures & jigs.
Abdul should have been around here. He has had a very high success rate with catching kings with jigs.

Btw, the lures that you mentioned are deep diving / trawling lures.

Fishing king, needlefish (garfish) is amazing bait where i have used it in florida

ive caught many large 2ft + ladyfish and catfish on live needlefish and the man next to me in dubai used a live needlefish and caught a kingfish

a barracudas ultimate favorite meal is needlefish and many lures are made to look like needle fish such as the strike pro needle, rapala sliver, and tube lure

so im pretty sure they are good bait but is the black streaked bream good for bait?

Apologies KD. Fishing king is right with the identification. It is indeed a black streaked monocle bream. dont think anyone uses it as a live bait though

Hi KD,

The striped one looks like a terapon (TERAPONIDAE FAMILY). Have hooked them quite a many times. You will find them close to the sandy portions of the sea. the other one is a juvenile sha'ari (sherry).

Cheers,

Needle fish = Gar fish (Teeth in upper & lower jaw) Useless to use as bait fish

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Needlefish

Ballyhoo = halfbeaks (used for live baiting here in UAE)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballyhoo

First pic shows sherri & next pic is a black streaked monocle bream.

the one with the black streak on its back got from a little bigger than the one in the pic all the way down to about 2 - 3 inches which is very small. I caught a lot of them which i released but are they good bait for bigger fish?

The other one was a little bigger im not sure what it is but too big for live bait.

i am really interested in what they are called and if the one with the balck streak is good for live bait???!!!!!

Yes they are from the same family. but the needle fish is the one that differs totally. If the upload thing on this forum is not working try uploading it on imageshack or facebook and then post the link.

Will try and identify

Hi KD / Amir,

Ballyhoo, Halfbeak and Garfish are one and the same. They have a longer lower jaw and a short upper jaw. The lower jaw is comparatively soft as compared to the needle fish. Needle fish is the one that has long pointed jaws and and sharp teeth that can make puncture wounds and may grow from 90 to 150 cms in length. Ballyhoo on the other hand can grow a max size of 39 to 40 cms. "Ref: fishbase"

Hope this helps.

KD,

U are absolutely right. The needlefish u are catching is garfish.

Ballyhoos have smaller beaks. I havent seen a ballyhoo, however I know tthey are different from gar fish.

For trolling live bait, i suggest you use the smaller ones. to get get the smaller gar fish try trolling hooks with shrimps on them but with any sinkers attached. You should also get them near the shore,

Oh and ive seen a lot of people on this forum say that needlefish is ballyhoo but im pretty sure it is not.
Ballyhoo do not get big dont have teeth and have a long upper beak and no bottom beak
needlefish (gar) get bigger and have 2 long jaws filled with very sharp teeth.
I am catching needlefish not ballyhoo just for clarification. (You would think im insane if said i caught a 2 foot ballyhoo) lol
Thanks again, and PLEASE ANSWER

Ok, thanks for the info, but ive got another question

I catch a lot of needlefish which i catch on topwater lures and they are pretty big as in 2.5 feet and above.

So i think that is a little too big to hook whole for live bait bottom fishing. (i prefer to bottom fish with live bait)
Should i just use the whole thing whole even if it is 2.5 feet + or should i cut it into chunks?
(I will be bottom fishing not trolling)

Shahzad,

You really hit the right spot!

Kd,

The only other better live bait than those mentioned by Shahzad (in my honest opinion, through our experiences here) is live prawn.

Shari/sherry is not particularly very attractive UNLESS its injured/bleeding thus we usually intentionally make it bleed when we use it as live bait.

Ciao!

my friend kd,
my opinion sherry is not good bait for predator fish. try to use sardine, mullet or needle fish(ballyhoo).these r best.

Live baiting is using the bait fish alive. trolling a dead bait fish will not give you the desired results.

Freezing and deforosting the fish would take away the fish odour which acts as an attractant. Therefore I would not use frozen items as bait. Incase you want to use dead bait then its better to get them from the fish market.

Ok i think this will be my last question

Soemtimes it is even hard to get lots of sherry so i wont be able to predator fish as much as will be catching the sherry for bait. If i dedicate 1 day for sherry fishing and freeze it properly will it still be good to fish the next weekend?

I know how to freeze bait so that it stays limber and flexible, my question is that will the frozen sherry do any good at the predator spot or must it be live or fresh?

Probable the area you are getting sharries has no predator fishes. I think the sharry's would survive till the time u reach the spot. Trying out a spot which is not giving result and hoping that it would give u a result is a waste of time.

ok well the place i catch sherry is about a 15 min paddle or more until the place the kings and cudas are.

My tank well is very small due to space constraints because of my kayak, i am sure they will die by the time i get to the spot. So, i was wondering if they would still be good as live bait in the same area that i caught them. I was wondering if the spot i catch sherry could only contain sherry or could it also hold other predatory fish?

in short......will live sherry as bait work in the same place that i caught it?

Could not understand you question.

Sharrys should last for till u get to the spot. They are good fighters and survivors.

What you are mentioning is called live baiting. Try using the small sharry as live bait around the area where you had seen people cathcing the kings and barracudas.

You have to troll the live bait even slower that the lure and the line should be kept lack enough to ensure that the live bait can swim freely on its own.

OK PEOPLE I HAVE A CRUCIAL QUESTION THAT NEEDS AN ASNWER

a common spot i fish around on my kayak is a pink buoy. Around it i have caught small to medium sized sherry every time i went, which is about over 20 times. I have used many different rigs and baits but have only picked up sherry from that spot. if i go again and catch a small sherry and hook it whole as live bait and drop it down again where i caught it will i catch bigger fish? Does that make sense that there are other fish around there even though i have never caught them? Or is it possible that the buoy i am fishing at only contains sherry?

PLEASE ANSWER
I AM DESPERATE

KD

For bottom fishing, I prefare using swivel, hooks and the sinker at the last.

For trolling via kayak, crystill minnows are good, however as the water temperature is still not very cold therefore the fishes are still deep down. Try trolling the rappala CD 20's but stay away from the rocks.

Also try lures which are small in size but dive deeper such as the strom lures.

Use a rod which is around 7 feet or above. Your line and reel seems appropriate.

Generally the results in and around the bouy is good as they provde some feeding stuff for the fish.

i use 2 basic rigs, the first is a carolina rig where i have a sliding sinker then a swivel then leader and hook

my second is where the weight is on the bottom and the hook is on a seperate leader above the weight

Lures:
i have used topwater lures, mid water yo zuri crystal minnows of different colors, rapala midwaters, and rapala deep divers, ive jigged with jigs that are pink, ive worked soft plastics on the bottom

ive trolled with skirted squid and shrimp and bottom fish with it too

i fish in jumeirah 1 open beach around large light posts in the water that ive seen people catch trevs, jacks, kings, cudas
i am spooled with 10 lb test, 14 lb test, and 20 lb test on different reels. my leader ranges from 60 lb monofilament to thin wire
i use size 1 hooks and size 2/0 hooks

Hi KD,

I have never fished from a kayak. May be your tackle set up is not right therefore it is not attracting any fish.

What tackle are you using i.e. rod lenght, line class, leader, and lures. If you provide some details may be I could give you some input.

you may call me if required on 050 8553820

Hi Abdul,

Hope that you are doing well.

Yah, i did check them out. The ones they have can only fit in lure up to 12 inches. I have some CD 30 and some biiger then them which would not fit in on of those boxes. Thinking of making one myu self by getting a tool box an having some PVC pipe lure tubes in them.

THanks

After wasting 22 days in Karachi by not being able to fish earlier during my vacations this month, returned back to dubai. Me and Shan left shore at 7:15 and reached the spot by 8:30. Started trolling near the wreck but no action there. So moved on further. after 15 minutes the reels started to scream. Plenty of bait fish activity as well but only managed to get yellow tail barracudas. Caught around 7 of them on 20-25 lb line while trolling. No signs of kings and cobia so far. Majority of the fish were caught on a Rapala minnow used with a down rigger.

When we had enough for the table then we stopped trolling and went back to the wreck for some jigging.

Did some vertical jigging for half an hour and caught around 6 yellow tail barracuds ranging between 2-5 kgs which were released back to the waters.

Returned back by 1:30 pm.

Unable to post picture. Pls help

Shrimps works better BUT not as long lasting as squid.

The scent of shrimps will be act as attractant to most fishes BUT can easily be peeled away from your hooks.

Even sardines are as effective but also very soft this can be peeled away. So inorder to thoughen the sardines, some would put salt and semi dry the sardine to make it more resilient.

The main species around where ill be fishing is trevally, jack, and kingfish.
For bottom fishing for these species, do you think squid or shrimp would work better?

For Groupers, just do bottom bouncing or short strokes close to the bottom/sea bed otherwise if you are targetting other species which are highly predatory like kingfish, queenfish, barracuda, amberjack and trevally... you will need to continuously jig with short strokes till almost the surface.

These techniques worked well for me.

I was on my way right now to go buy a jig and i decided to check the forum before i left. Do you vertical jig?
I am hoping to get some grouper off the rocks with some long vertical jigs. I now the basics of how to work them, any tips youve picked up through time on vertical jigging?

I had seen people catching Kingfish from the rock . It was at the mouth/along the canal leading to Hamriya port between Sharjah/Ajman.

I too had ever got my lure (a small 4in, topwater popper) taken by a kingfish when fishing at Ghantoot canal BUT my line snapped. It was initially following my lure right up to just a few meters from where I was standing!!!!!

All of the kingfish I had ever caught were all through jigging ONLY.

Ciao!
