Don't have a lat/lon grid for the central coast image below yet. Like that scale better because it sees the water further west and less cut and paste.

Ran up to San Fran and fished a 26 ft skiff today, got limits of salmon at Muir Beach, 8 miles north of the Gate. Bumpy ride but worth the limits! Check out www.fullspeedfishing.com a good site to find out what is going on up there (Albies out of Santa Cruz today, one bluefin).

Harrell: Thanks for keeping us abreast of those enhanced images. Just wish I had a Cloro picture one before my latest run 110-miles offshore to the San Juan Seamount for zip. Navy stopped us short of the break by est 8-miles. Clouds prevented any shots prior to our run but I'm hearing rumors of fish being caught today. Thinking 80-plus miles. Wind will be up for the next few days but if anyone can join forward an e-mail. moorefish@hotmail.com

Wow, nice fish Melvin.
Fished PSL today for halibut. Caught nothing N. of the lighthouse for 6 hours of fishing, but saved the day with a nice 30" 'but in the bay on our last drift. Had a couple of other raked baits in the bay, but nothing outside. Glassy ocean until about 11, and then the wind started to crank. Looks like she's going to blow for a few days. Maybe the albacore will magically appear once it lays down!
best fishes,
steve

Friends:

I know that albacore fishing has been slow this year ... but a bunch of local guys had a great time on a 5-day trip out of San Diego on the Spirit of Adventure. First day we got 283 albacore for 27 fishermen (all nice size fish). On second and third days we picked up 133 fat yellowfin and a couple dozen yellowtail.

1/3 of the the fishermen on the boat were from our area ... and yet we took the top 4 jackpot fish. Attached is a photo of Charlie Cabassi, John Roffoni and Mike Stanton with their jackpot winning fish. Mike Stanton caught the big fish again with a 133 pound yellowfin (on the kite). Was a fabulous trip. Makes up for the disappointing fishing in this area ...

I've been away from my home computer and checking things on the web the best I can. I see that fish are being caught up in SC, here's the link for those that don't know http://www.baysidemarinesc.com/
I took the Aluminum out of Leffingwell on Sunday. It was a beautiful day. I have to admit I was out-fished by my friend John that was with me for the day, He must have had hooked up 10 times before I did. Our catch was mediocre. we caught&released 3 seatrout. The rockfish were a little sensitive this weekend, I think a lot of them came in from deeper water within the day. Crating seemed to be the better method of releasing them. later, Stacey

Bloody Decks were the rule for the NEW boat, got most of the Electronics mounted SAT thanks to the help of my oldest son that came to give us a hand, Sun the three of us limited on lings and big reds, big ling was 14#, caught five legal ones , went back on Monday with all three sons and a youngster limited out , no keeper lings some real nice reds, the big one caught by Blackie JR weighed in at 9#.
Hope to get after those Albies next, need to hook up the rudder positioner on the auto pilot and get a tri ducer installed.
If anybody has any pro or cons remarks on the installation of the tri ducer , weather it works better with a thru the hull or a transom mount I would like to hear them, OK you guys scare up then longfins and we hope to be out there soon.

Rpt 9/06 Legacy from Ventura Harbor: Fished out to "110-miles offshore" to the highspot on San Juan Seamount for zero. We were just shy of the blue water outside the Juan when a P-3 O'Ryan chased us out. Frickin beautiful deal. Covered nearly 300-miles of water and all I found was green water lacking any decent sign, bait, birds, etc. Also fished the Escarpment and 311 areas. Found some big bluefin chasing micr-baits on a small paddy that refused to go. Major bummer. Fresh reports say the big albies are slightly north of the Cortez.

Congrats on your catch yesterday. Just heard that Pacific Horizon is catching fish at the Davidson this morning.

I ran out for albacore today and started at 35:00 122:10 where the color was blue and the temp was 62, the coldest water we could find. From there I trolled on a 300 degree heading and about 15 mi up we saw some large grey dolfins that looked like flipper. As they came up to the side of the boat, two jig lines got hit. We threw some 3 inch anchovie in as chum and used the 6 inch sardines to flyline with. We imediately hooked two 40 pounders. Between the three of us we got all four fish in the boat. Then we heard from the K Lynn who had broken down some 20 mi south of us. We were 75 kt mi out and they were 70 out. We contacted the Coast Guard for advise and they decided to run out there and tow the K Lynn in. We quit at 3:00 pm never seeing another fish.

I'll be out looking for tuna in the same area we caught them Saturday tomorrow which is 35:00 122:10 65kt on a 237 heading from the rock. The conditions have remained exactly the same. The Admiral caught zero today as of 3:30 but they went to the 1908 and the donut where there still appears to be more chlorophyll. I hope to see some of you out there.

0-fish,
On the average, dependant upon tide, you’d have to drag your boat 60 feet across the beach to launch. I have a 14’ Klamath and it’s the heaviest of all my friends boats and it can be a bear. We usually lay down 8” water pipe on the sand to serve as rollers and have a couple of guys pushing. I recommend taking your 12 footer as the 16 is much too heavy.
There are a couple of rocks close to shore, check them out and remember where they are!
I just checked out the noaa forecast and Sunday looks prime. I don’t carry a radio on the little boat and will be out there tomorrow. I have an “ECV” sticker on my motor , If you see me give me a shout.
Hope this helps, Stacey
If you have any other questions feel free to email me.
Budking, you don't need downriggers right away. Sorry about being cross with my posting to you, as I don't know your skill levels. shoot me an email and I'll try to help you out.

Stacey,I have never launched at leffingwell, but have put in a 12 footer at san simeon. I was wondering how large an aluminun you think could be launched at leffingwell (I have a 16 foot bay runner style, sans console, which I normally take out of morro). Would like to try it some time either in the 12 or 16. Any info is appreciated.

check out the dfg site for information it will be a while before you see any maps as they have not yet defined the bounds of the "central coast", the next targeted area. you also might want to do a search for MLPA.

i think the picture is getting clearer money is the basis for the regs and limits that are being enforced. ive never seen the big fish and game boats, localy, so often ever. the so called experts are being funded by the very people that want to close the fisheries, seems like the only way they can guarantee employment is to make it seem like the fisheries are in trouble and to spend money on there bogus bull plan. guaranteed they will gain alot of ground and hurt alot of buisneses and the future for our children. its to bad that money and greed rules our world and its also to bad that the sardene crash in montery way back when is used as an alabi for this misrepresentation and misuse of our government

New SST shows an edge remains intact where the albies were caught recently at 35.00 and 122.10. This edge extends down to 34.40. Very hard edge is located outside Cape San Martin Buoy at 35.40 and 122.10. Both areas are about 65m from The Rock. New water clarity chart is hard to read so perhaps Bob or Dustin could provide more insight as the clean water appears to be 70m offshore. I may need experienced crewman for the weekend so e-mail if interested.

Posted on Wednesday, September 01, 2004 - 11:40 am:

I just returned from fishing for two days on my friends 1 day boat the New Lo-An. He runs it out of Pt. Loma. On monday we had great fishing on 25-40 pound albacore. The boatlanded 93 that day, I landed 4 (busted 1 off) with my biggest albacore ever at 40 pounds. All were bait fish. It was cool to watch him motor around looking for fish on his side-scanning sonar, turning on a school, the crew starts to throw bait, and we can watch the fish come up on the fathometer. Very educational. Can't wait to try some of these techniques up here.
Yesterday was also a very educational day, but for the wrong reason. We fished the same areas that he had boated over 200 albacore the two previous trips and we caught 6!!! And he was high boat for Pt. Loma!!! It was crazy, he said the fish were down (he thinks they'll go down several thousand feet) and the schools we did find wanted nothing to do with the jigs or bait when we threw it. He could see them run away from the boat, whereas the day before they ran to the boat. Very interesting. What was frustrating, was that the 1.5 and 2 day boats started getting them @ 4 pm, just after we started heading in. He says that there is no doubt that there is a greylight bite and an afternoon bite.
It was a great trip and I learned a ton. I highly recommend a trip on one of these boats. My friends' boat is a good one and he has the highest fish counts for all the 1 day boats out of SD (www.newlo-an.com).
Hopefully the albacore will come in a little ways so I can try some of these methods out.
best fishes,
steve

Thinking of going out of MB on Friday for the long run. Really don't want to do that with only one boat - anyone else interested?

Bill, ...Blue water is 60 miles offshore. There will be at least 4 or 5 boats running offshore on Saturday and Sunday. The fish are there, if your willing to put in the miles.

300lb swordfish....not with only 3 feet between the fins, thats more like a 150lb swordfish. I used to work on a harpoon boat and spotted and cleaned many fish over three hundred lbs, still a good rush though, you were probably near the Santa lucia escarpment, which is a great place for swordfish!!! A nice big humbolt squid might of induced a positive strike for you..good luck.

Yea ... left it out of my post on Allcoast on purpose. Way to much political stuff on their at times. We did bait a swordy about 55 miles from the rock. Front dorsal was a good 2 inches thick ...front and rear fins were about 3ft apart, estimated at around 300+. Tossed sardines at him, slow trolled them in front of him ..finnaly gave up and threw a megabait 1ft in front if his face just to have him thrash his sword at it and sink out. One of the most memorable days on the water I can remember .... soo much life and even played with the porpoise on the way in on the bow. Would hang my hand out ...they would pop up spray me with their spout and bang my hand with their head over and over. Hope to do it again this coming weekend.

Just a short post to thank Bob Hather for his effort on Saturday out on the grounds. Had a fuel issue and was good to know he was behind me if we came up a mile or two short. Clorophyll pictures worked great, Blue water was exactly where the charts said it would be. We only put two fish in the box and had to turn for home ..called Bob in and was happy to hear he was hooked up as I motored towards the rock. We will do it again next weekend.

John with 9 guys on the Fiesta yesterday scored 11 large albies fishing 65-miles SW of the rock. Depending on what develops, there's a chance I may be looking for experienced crew for the coming weekend fishing into Tuesday. Will fish long and late, if necessary.

recreational and commercail fishermen need to stick together. if we fight against each other we become devided and loose some of our strength, not to mention the lost time and energy lost. recreational fisheries are allocated the lions share of the optimum yields for the fisheries as it should be as there are just a few commercail guys left and a great number of sport fisherpeople

The suggestion that the recreational fishermans take should even be compared with the take of commercial fishing is laughable. This comparison shows the ignorance of these people. Guys, this is serious. Get ready to fight to the end for your right to sportfish. Can you imagine the thought of not receiving a fishing license because the fishing license quota had been met? This is how these people think. Now is the time to act and become publicly vocal.

Well, it looks like we are under attack again by the left wing environmentalists and tree huggers that have never wet a line or fired a shot in their lives. Yet, they promote themselves as experts in hunting and fishing methods of take. The latest nightmare, Felicia Coleman, a PHd. from Florida State University, claims that "recreational" fishing not only damages local fish populations but fish populations "around the globe."

These are the same type of people who, when the Hearst family heirs offered 82,000 acres (minus home sites for family members and land near the San Simeon pier) to an environmental group for about 150 million dollars less than it was appraised for, said they were unsatisfied with the deal. If hearst were still alive, I'm sure he would tell them to "pound sand." You see folks, these people don't want a little, or some, or most of the land and sea we use for recreational purposes...THEY WANT IT ALL!!! And nothing satisfies them until they control it and force their ideals on us: Humans are bad, animals are good, plants are good--period! Instead of reasonable ideals: Humans are good, animals are good, plants are good; and God gave us lemons, so let's make lemonade AND tunafish sandwiches!!

Felicia Coleman is not new to the environmental crusade. She has written many articles against recreational fisherman and is currently listed on the Yahoo! News of the Day list with her latest attack on us, and if you do an Internet search you'll discover she is not the neutral researcher she'd lead us to believe. In truth, she is a left wing political hack who bashes the Bush administration any time a newspaper will publish her opinion. And let's not forget this is her opinion. These so called environmentalists that tell freedom loving people that they can go on a particular part of land and sea make me sick. Locally, in MB,CA, on the sand spit, envirnmental extremists have covertly, w/o any public input roped off from end to end the sand spit. It's this kind of arrogance and disregard for people to enjoy their surroundings that angers me more than anything.

In closing, I, for one, am going to vocalize the fact that our rights to enjoy the Earth and Sea are being systematically chipped away in the hopes that reason will prevail, and recreational fisherman may continue to enjoy the freedom and harvest the sea offers.

We caught five albies at 34:59 and 122:09 which is 64 kt mi 238. When we got to 122:06 the water turned blue and was 61 degrees. We caught 4 on bait and onr on a green jig. The weather was perfect. We saw more fish jumping that we left for the rest of you. The fish were 25-35 lbs. Dustin on the Fucawee called us on the fish and his biggest was 42lbs.

Fished PSL today for halibut and got the big helmut. Only caught two short lings all day. No raked baits. Very slow. Not sure what was up. The swell was big and there was a little red tide. Oh well, keeps me humble.
Hope you guys found the tuna today!

Here is yesterday's chlorophyll image. Couldn't get the high resolution MODIS data so had to use the SeaWifs 4km data. It will give you a good idea of the water out where those guys are chasing tuna today. IF anyone wants a larger copy with a lat/lon overlay send me an e-mail.

Budking,
You might want to stick with Virges for a while. Buddy up with some people on the boat that have their own boats and learn the ropes so to speak. I’d hate for you to do something unsafe.

I have a place in Cayucos and finally got a boat to go out in, 18 ft inbd/outbd, good enough for relatively calm days. I would like to fish the bottom or kelp beds. Do I necessarily need downriggers and any other tips? I have done the party boats out of MB so I have most of the gear. Also, any good charts I can use.
Thanks in advance.
