May bump out in the morning depending on reports from today. Would start looking at terrafin a little more closely now that the water seems to be cleaning up outside the donut. And those that dont have the range, I would be working the temp break just outside the bouy in that semi-green water. There was a lot of good signs in those areas earlier in the season, and now that the clean water has pushed in, you may see those larger models coming from that area. Time will tell .... hope those out there today kill a few. Dustin |

A little better shot yesterday. Due west of MB and the donut look the best. Should get some reports today on the water color in the green areas since I don't have it pinned down yet.

I heard from Jack Scarborough on the Valhalla. He got a late start so didn't go further than 25 mi. He said the water he traveled going up to the CSM buoy was green and no fish. Read my post below as to where it looks like the good water starts. Bob |

Just called Virg's re live bait. They have a 60/40 chovey/dine mix and the receiver should be open around 5am. Avila is rumored to be sending a boat out tonight. Calm seas upon us. |

It looks like the water clears up at 27 mi out. There is also a slight temp break there. From about 6 mi past the PSL buoy all the way up to the CSM buoy looks like good water for the albies. No one bought bait early today at Virg's so I'm not sure if any one went out. The bait is medium sarine. I think both landings are running tuna trips tonite. I'll bait up 6:15am and be on 68. Just a reminder for those who may not be aware, the Morro Bay harbor festival is this weekend so it might be kind of a mad house in that area as it gets later in the morning. |

With no updated shots from Terrifin we will use what we have. The plan is to head out on a 260 from Morro until we find good water(probibly around the CSM buoy). We will stay on the water over night probably at San Simeon, so we will not be able to post our findings before Saturday. I will try to raise eveyone on 68 first thing Saturday. Bob, if you e-mail me your number and I will call after we fish tomorrow. Maybe save everyone some fuel. |

Fished MB harbor yesterday for halibut. Got a huge 1/4 scoop of great bait and drifted around the bay for 6 hours for nada. Spoke to some guys on their boats (moored) and they said it had been slow for the past couple of weeks. Anyone been getting any halibut lately? Planning a trip to SD in October if we don't have any tuna around here by then (I'm not going to be holding my breath). Anyone else interested in going down? I'll be fishing on the New Lo-An. They are going to be having 1.5 day trips in October. best fishes, steve Avocation |

Good effort Chris, We have done three trips so far this year outside the 50 mile mark for only two fish. Been a tough year, but not giving up complete hope as of yet. As Harrell has shown ...The blue water on the chlorophyll shots continues to clean up south of us ...and has slowly been pushing up this way. With the strange year we have had with a massive algea bloom and lack of upwelling our water has continued to stay ugly. I believe we may see some clean water here shortly and may have a chance at those late season big boys we are use to in October, November. Once again, great effort and lets hope it happens for all of us soon. Dustin |

Not with the day we had 3 guys 23 reds to 8-9 pounds 7 olives 3 legal lings to 23 pounds 3 legal lings released 15 shorts between 20-29 inches. These fish were healthy full of food and still on the chew. Here are a couple of photos hope they come out. The rest are on www.myfishpictures.com

Fished 9/23 and 9/24 from Ventura targeting billfish and paddies. All the paddies were dry excpet for baitfish, small greenies. Worked the heck out of the Osborn, SBI, 17-Fathom, Ridge, and Footprint all for nothing. No tailers, sleepers, jumpers, breezers, knock downs, short bites, etc. Not even a shark. Worked the binos hard in blue to off-blue water averaging 66 to 69-degrees. Burned 82 gallons to cover 185-miles. Very frustration outcome in the wake of my previous run 110-miles offshore chasing green water, ghost tuna. Next attempt will likely be south to SCI/Cortez/Tanner. Post or e-mail if you can crew or wish to join in the hunt. It's getting late and that latest NW'r did some damage. M/Moore |

No Chlorophyll shot in our area because of the marine layer. Clear south and east of the channel islands all the way to Mexico with all blue water except for a couple spots of off color water. The wind came up here and north so I suspect nobody out prospecting today. They are still catching some LFT out of Monterey/HMB/SF but mostly out 70+ miles in not very good weather. Chlorophyll discussions/observations: AS most of you know I have spent a lot of time and effort trying to get a handle on this new satellite data available to us. I have tracked a lot of reports and received a lot of inputs from people out chasing Albacore up and down the coast. I am personally convinced that this tool is as valuable as the SST and based on what I have observed in the last few weeks, if I had to choose between the two I would take the chlorophyll ! Terrafin is working on adding it to their subscription service. Hope they have it available by next season. It would be nice to have the accurate lat/lon, distance and bearing tool that comes with Terrafin. I have received no reports of any albacore being caught in the "dirty" red/yellow water. The majority of the fish have been caught in the blue water close to the "dirty" water and in coincedence with a temperature break. The jury is still out on the green water but I have a theory based on what I and others have observed over the last 7 or 8 years chasing LFT, ie; albacore being a "sight" predator prefer clean blue water but will go into the green water to feed. We have caught a lot of fish, mostly bigger fish, in green water but never very far from the blue water. Many times "trolling home" we have caught fish after leaving the clean water. We have had a lot of upwelling and dirty water as the result all year long. This is probably what kept the albacore off shore and drove them north. Now we have a tool to watch this early in the season next year and a much better idea where to prospect.

Friends: Bob Hather had an important posting (a few messages below this one) CCFCC is working hard to protect recreational fishing rights along the coast. This community has been wonderful in its support of our cause. The media has been deplorable in their unwillingness to print the truth about our healthy nearshore fishery. They will print absolute garbage from leftwing environmental groups, but not the truth! I have written letters-to-the-editor telling them factual information about our healthy nearshore fishery, but they refuse to print them. The Tribune printed on their front page a quote (obtained from Resources Legacy Foundation member) that the Fish & Game Commission is MANDATED by the Marine Life Protection Act of 1998 (MLPA) to enact a series of Marine Preserves up and down the state. THAT IS AN ABSOLUTE FALSEHOOD! There is no such language in the statute. The Act mandates that the Commission evaluate EXISTING MPAs up and down the state to see how they can be better-managed and improved. It does not contemplate NEW MPAs. It mentions that new MPAs are a POSSIBILITY, but only if science and research suggests they are needed. Environmental groups do not want CDFG to do the necessary research to discover the true health of our nearshore fishery because they know that it is better than it has been in the last 25 years. They want to keep the CDFG ignorant about our nearshore fishery. The Resources Legacy Foundation wants to impose "NO FISH ZONES" along the Central Coast without any science or data suggesting they are needed or necessary ... to the detriment of all fishing interests on the Central Coast. I have relayed our concerns to CDFG and the Commission. Sonke Mastrup, a deputy director at CDFG agrees that there has been much false-information about this process and agrees that CDFG and the Commission should have a press-release clarifying the duties of the Commission. These duties and obligations certainly are not what is printed in the paper ... or what the Resources Legacy Foundation claims. Another example of the willingness of the media to print environmental propaganda is the spate of recent articles about this claimed researcher, Felicia Coleman from Florida State University .... Who claims that she did a 22 year study of recreational fishing catch compared to commercial fishing catch along the coatline of the U.S. Along the West Coast she says that recreational fishermen caught 59% of the tonnage of fish species that are "overfished" such as Bocaccio and Ling Cod. This is totally false again! There is no such data by individual species over the last 22 years. NMFS has only been gathering this data for the last few years ... and that collection of data was by the Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Survey (MRFSS). The reliability of this data is condemned as faulty and bogus by every group that has ever looked at it. Even the Federal Government agrees that this data collection system is unreliable. It was only after commercial fishermen stopped fishing for bocaccio (salmon grouper) many years ago (because it was not economically viable any more) that NMFS started gathering data of catch by recreational fishermen on a species-by-species basis. ....But the media will print this garbage because they want the public to believe that our nearshore fishery is "overfished" and depleted. All of you who rockfish regularly know how healthy our nearshore fishery is. Yesterday I went out with two friends on my boat and we had our limit of 30 rockfish in about 2 1/2 hours ... all nice fat, healthy fish. The blue bass, olive bass, and red rock cod are so fat and healthy ... I have not seen this in 25 years. Every trip going out of Patriot Sportfishing or Virg's comes back with limits for every fisherman. WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS TRUE?????? Because there are so many fish out there. I ask you to be a SPOKESMAN for the fishing industry. Tell all your friends the truth. Tell them how healthy our nearshore fishery is. Tell them that the media is hoodwinking them. Tell them from your own first-hand experience. The media won't tell the truth. You have to be a spokeman. Support the "Right To Fish" group, the CCFCC. We are committed to fighting for the rights of recreational fishermen along the coast of California. We want to get the TRUE DATA into the hands of the CDFG and the Federal Government. That is why we supported the Cal Poly on-board survey last summer and are trying to get the favorable results of the study printed in some reputable scientific journal. That is why we support Fred Otti's rockfish enhancement program. That is why we are fighting the Resources Legacy Foundation proposal to impose a no-fish zone all up and down the Central Coast. You will have more opportunities to help us ... we will keep in touch. It may be true that there are parts of the world where there has been overfishing .... BUT ITS NOT HERE ON THE CENTRAL COAST!!!!!!!!!!! Mel. |

LAT/LON grid. Bob: Not sure which image you are referring to. I just checked the 09/20 cencal image. Granted the overlay is approximate but the lon lines are pretty close ie: 120:30 runs through Pt. Conception, 121:00 runs through Pt. Estero, 122:00 runs through Santa Cruz, 122:30 through HMB and 123 runs through Pt. Reyes as they do on the charts. |

I want to keep you up on a couple of things CCFCC is currently working on. First, we are supporting a prososal for a rockfish stocking program designed by Freddi Otte of Central Coast Salmon Enhancement. The Water Quality Board is working on midigation proposals for PG&E's larva kill from its discharge. The Resource Legecy Foundation has been pushing for a complete fishing closure from Arguello to Point Sur. This would be a disaster for us but is staff's first choice. Second, we are trying to get the DFG to adopt a policy with regard to any proposed MPA that all areas within a certain distance of a port be left open for fishing so as to protect fishing communities as well as the fish. Third , we are looking forward to getting the fish stock surveys done by Cal Poly and co sponsered by CCFCC that indicates the fish stocks are healthy published soon so we have acceptable data to counter the flawed MERFS data that has been responsible for the current fishing restrictions. There is a lot more in the hopper I'll leave for later but be assured that CCFCC has become an important advacate for fishermen. Bob |

It looks like Saturday might be fishable out 70 mi. The way I see the chlorophyll it has remained the same all month. The closest blue water appears to be in the same spot we caught albacore on the last two trips. Thats 35:10 & 122:10. I plan to try on Satuday. I did see some jumpers in the greener water at 55 mi. Late in the season the tuna could be anywhere, we just need to get some boats out there looking. Harrel, I think your grid is too far west. I checked it against the grid on Terafin. Bob |

Blackie Jr.---There is a great Terrafin shot from the 21st. The area Harrell Kimball suggests has a temp break, approx. 32 nm west of Morro. I think the chlorophyll map carries more weight than the Terrafin right now. |

Bob, I don't have any idea where to start. My Terrafin subscription expired so I don't have any shots of the water temps. It sounds like the chlorophyll shot might be the more reliable option for finding the fish. Maybe Bob Hather can give us an idea if there are areas that might be holding fish within 75 miles of M.B. The weather still looks a little questionable for a real long run but maybe it will lay down a little more as we get closer to the weekend. |

Here is yesterday's image. Lots of dirty water in our area. The blue water is way out but the green water west of Morro Bay outside the 121:30 line might be worth a shot for bigger fish. If any one wants a larger image shoot me an e-mail

Blackie Jr., I'm thinking of tuna prospecting on Saturday as well. I have good range, wondering where you're thinking of going, chlorophyll shot doesn't look too hot at this point in time, but the fish have to show up somewhere, sometime. If weather/conditions look OK, count me in. |

I wonder if the "experts" that come up with the numbers of all these poor fish we are murdering consider the weather as a factor. I bet none of these 100 payload boats with all the super electronics were out this weekend. Hope the weather lays down a little before another emergency closure is enacted on the bottom fish. The new boat is all equipped so I would like to team with some others on a tuna prospecting trip if the weather lays down this weekend. Let me know. |

Stacey,I read Felecias article and one her quotes was party boats with 100 people or more,I wonder where she was talking about, I have never heard of a west coast party boat even capable of taking 100 or more fisherman out in a single trip, she says the fish have no where to hide ,lets build some off shore oil rigs and when there tapped out sink em like in the gulf and provide more man made reefs for the fish to hide,i do beleive that Mel De La Mott posted something awhile back that said the baccio were in healthier numbers than beleived ,so appearntly Felecia has brown eyes if you get my drift |

Fished PSL today for halibut. Fished south down to Pirates. Not a sniff for 6+ plus hours...then, off Avila, I hooked some kind of monster that peeled off 100 yards of line, wrapped me around some kelp and broke me off. This is the fourth monster I've hooked out of PSL...sure would like to get a look at one. No other take downs all day (except for a few tomcod . Heading down to Gaviota this weekend to fish/surf the ranch with my bro. Does anyone have any suggestions on fishing that area? Are there white sea bass, YT, calicos in that area? thanks, steve |

Just recieved the latest Chlorophyll picture from yesterday. Still ugly pretty much up and down our coastline. One promising area is the south side of the donut. If anyone is going to get out in the next week or so, I would watch to see if that water continues to clean up. |

SO easy we forget. There was a huge dry spell here and Diego in the late eighties early nineties. I guess those years between 97-02 made is forget that its not always wide open at 15 miles. I still think we will find a few hogs in late October early November. Pacific Queen is heading up mid October and you know Cavinaugh will put in the time. Dustin |

If memory serves me right, I don't think hardly any Albacore were caught by sport boats off the Central Coast from 1987 to mid '90's. Isn't that right? Seems to me that the big El Nino we had about 1994 set things off. David "Windstone" |

Probably about 30 miles out of Bodega ! Locally ?my guess would be at least 80 miles due west of Morro around the 35:15 line. |

Harrell, So how far out is the closest tuna water? Tomorrow's weather is looking pretty nice. Can't believe there is no tuna in the warm plume coming into the weather bouy. This is killing me!!! Meanwhile, my old fishing buddies in Oregon are still killing them, getting 30-40 fish a day from 25-40 pounds! My friend Marty got 32 last week casting swimbaits and jigs into jumpers. I may have to move back!!! Come on last season albacore. steve |
