If anyone needs a crew member tomorrow, please give me a ring (489-8578 or cell: 459-3609). I'm a good deckhand, fisher, fish cleaner, boat scrubber, and happy to share the costs. With our bait tank difficulties, I don't want to take our boat out again. Much appreciated.

Took a buddy with me yesterday (Monday) and Brought home TWELVE 12, Albies. All were over 32lbs and five were 40-43lbs. The Bite hit HARD at 9 o'clock until we left (noonish). We had to stop fishing cause we were soooo tired and trere was no more room For fish on my 19ft Bayrunner Baja. There was only two of us so ya had to be quick puttin the lines out so you could get those double/triple hookups and if you wanted to rest don't put a line in the water. All were caght on GRN/YLW/ORG feathers They did not hit anything dark in color. 49 nand 15 were the magic numbers or a 210 heading 36-38 miles, that's how big that bait ball was, at the least, 2 miles.
The only chumming that I was doing was my bilge.I don't know what else to say other than it was the CRAZIEST thing I had seen out there with fish Jumping out of the water everywhere the whole time that we were at those #'s
Thanks Rich, for opening up early for us!

Fished out of PSL today. They had bait today, but not much. I don't think they'll have bait tomorrow (sea lions ransacked the pens last night). Plus, with the low afternoon tides, you have to be at the launch by 3 or 4 to get your boat out. We pulled out at 3:30 today and it was getting skinny. I'd go out of MB.
We fished a little S of Bob's numbers along with the rest of the flotilla. Picked up one fish on the troll; 20# bluefin on cedar plug (just ate some...yummy:-). Picked up one 30# albacore on a nearly dead bait. Had a couple of other pick ups, but no other fish on. Our bait was nearly dead once we reached the fishing grounds, mostly due to a crappy bait tank. Going to put a Kodiak on the swimstep this winter. Got into a couple of dissapointing wide-open bonito bites...we thought they were albacore until we got close.
Some boats killed them, others scratched a few, and some got 0. I heard of a few with 15+.
Nice day on the water. A little wind all day, but very pleasant. Ran at 20 knots on the way in.
Hope you guys get them tomorrow.
best fishes,
steve

Possible trip out of Morro on Thursday - anyone else contemplating going out that day? What's the current drill to get bait early in the am? Last time I called the number posted on the dock I think it said it was disconnected (or something like that).

Hey guys,
I'm hopin to killem tomorrow, And with any luck/skill we will do well.
When I was in Hawaii a couple of years ago I purchased some soy sause with the name brand of "San J" wheat free. It had a blue sun on the bottle and the only contents were soy, alcohol and salt. where the other san J soy sauses contain soy, alcohol, salt and wheat. These sauces have a red sun on the bottle. I've searched a number of oriental markets locally and in the bay area and havn't been able to find the wheat free soy sauce. Any info would be appreciated. stacey.

OK here are the #s. 35:58 121:24. There were miles of fish. Today there were five boats, Waverunner, Seeker, Respect, Princes and me working the area within 3 mi of these #s and we all were bendo at the same time. Our 11 fish to 40+ pounds came on bait by jumping from boil to boil under the birds working. Form 9am to 1:00 we we almost allways pumping a fish. We had lines break and a hook break as the bite was wide open at times. Mike More could use a couple of passengers for Wednesday so call him if interested at 805 469 2879.

I would like to thank Michelle and Matt (of the Billy Boy) and others that work for Virges that went out and found the Albacore for us this year. You’re the hero of many of us. Thumbs up to Harrell for the chlorophyll mapping while I’m at it. He has saved many of us hundreds if not thousands of dollars in fuel for his efforts. I also appreciate the effort for those that explored but didn’t find em. I know how that goes. Fuel prices aren’t good. Well, I hope to hear positive reports from Hather and the boys out there today. I think we’ll be out there later in the week. My boss reads the board so sick days are a little tuff.

Good luck in the morning Bob and Mike call me if you are going to make it up .... may be some coverage on Monday. Think everyone is watching and waiting at the moment to see what Virg's does tomorrow to make the call. Trying to decide if I need to pick the boat up tomorrow and start getting things ready for the week.

The weather for the next few days; not good at all tomorrow, coming down Sunday with Mon, Tues and Wed looking very good with Tues/Wed looking the best. The area where the albacore were reported today was clear around noon so we might get a color shot tomorrow and the SST showed a good break in that area with the plume coming up from the San Juan/Rodriguez which is a very good sign. Like they say "it ain't over till it's over"

Since the weather didn't look good for this weekend, I took the day off and looked for tuna in the same area as Salty Doc saw fish on Tues. It was 23 mi on a 260 heading from Morro Bay. The conditions looked the best I've seen all year with bait every where, sealions, porpoise, birds and whales as well. At 12 mi the temp goes from 59 to 60. At 18 mi the abundant life begins. Water color was good with some large kelp paddies holding tons of bait. The bait from Virg's was a perfect mix of huge anchovie and med sardine. The weather was calm. I trolled for three hours and soaked baits for an hour. Only one problem, I didn't see any tuna.

Bob, would make one last run with you... but taking the wife south for the weekend. Thanks again for the effort this year, was tough but was good to have a few put the time and effort in. Hooking up with our Santa Barbara / Ventura guys for a night of cocktails and talk about the hopes of next season this Friday. Going to be trying out some Thresher fishing off Pt. San luis in the coming weeks .... that and maybe some late fall flattys if we get lucky.

Went rock fishing for limit of very nice quality reds at the light house. I decided to run offshore. Water was 61.7-62.3 at 23 and 18. Water as smoke blue. Lots of bait and birds. I saw a small pod of jumpers bluefin / albies? By the time I put the jigs on the rods they went down. I trolled for awhile in that area for nada. It was getting late so had to head for the barn.

After going through two sets of brakes on my truck, two sets on my Pacific trailer and spinning two bearings, I switched to disc. They work great. I never realized how much different they were until I changed over. Great investment. Davis Boats converted my over and did a great job.

The Legend out of San Diego picked up 32 albacore 100 miles south. Several boats in the Monterey area were looking over the weekend with no reports of any tuna. No chlorophyll shots lately.

Bob, tell us about your Mag Bay trip !

I just got back from some great wahoo fishing at Mag Bay today and see the weather is good for tomorrow. Virg's has live bait but call Matt if you plan to go early. There is a one degree break about 5 mi past the weather buoy thats looks interesting but I don't think I pull a trip together unless we have any firm reports of fish out there. I heard some bluefin were spotted in the Santa Barbara channel which I'm trying to confirm. Please post if you have any more info for tomorrow.

Paul;
Those are nice fish, lot better than we did this year on the salmon, yes the new boat is REAL NICE ,Buying the Diesel and the Alaskan package was also a good move.
now if it will just calm down so we can get some more fishing done before they drop the hammer.
I think the Radon is going to go to O P YACHTS in Ventura to be sold, there is a better market around the islands for that type of boat

Blackie,
I saw you at the launch ramp a month or so ago when you had your old boat there. It looks loke a good boat, but I'm really not in the market right now as I am about to add a second story to my house. I already have one boat, a restored 1962 Bartender 19', but it's just not big enough to go tuna chasing unless they are maybe inside 20 miles (yeah right!). It's a great salmon/halibut/rockfish boat though, and I did pretty well on the kings last season with it (see picture). I guess what I'm saying is that in the mean time I will have to live vicariously through others who are better equipped. Hope you enjoy your new rig. kings

Wow, the anonymous poster really got under some skin! I am an avid reader of this page, and I must say I am impressed at the way you guys went to bat for Harrell. Good to know there are still some stand up guys around. I also applaud the efforts of all the die hard longfin chasers this year... what a bust of a season! Unfortunately I lack the proper boat to make the tuna runs, otherwise I'd be out there with you. I know sometimes some of you need "crew". I am very qualified, although not well known in this area... I moved here 2 years ago... so send me a message on the board if you have a trip planned. Meanwhile, good luck, and screw you "anonymous", you're of weak mind and poor character.

Wow guys. When I read that guys post, I didn't take it the way everyone else is. Harrell, I don't know you personally, but I am sure we have met before. Thank you for all of your dedication to the sport of fishing. I thought anonymous was complimenting you by saying you work really hard to get us information and how do you find time to fish. But if I am wrong, then anonymous, please post a message letting us know what you meant. Lets not jump to conclusions anymore guys.

Hey anonymous, you better stay anonymous if you don't want your a## kicked. I been at Santa Cruz chasing albacore when one other boat showed up and it was Harrell. (This was not planned either.) Another time, my family and I were at the East Cape and met up with Harrell. He provided my 2 young sons and myself a skiff & motor to catch sierras in front of the house. I have fished with him in his boat for salmon and had great success. I live in THE valley and depend on Harrell's information before I go fishing. Before any tuna or salmon trip, I call Harrell to get the scoop and I know I'll get the truth from him. I have his numbers on my speed dial on my phone I call him so much. Harrell, thank you for all your effort and advice and keep up the good work. You don't need to respond to morons like anonymous, we your friends will cover your back.

Den, thanks for the support ! If anonymous wants to send me an e-mail I will be happy to tell him when, where and how I fish including my first albacore 10 miles out of San Pedro in 1946 or catching albacore out Morro bay in a 17 ft boat when our GPS was a compass and a portable am radio with a directional antenna.

I do plan on running out to look for some late tuna in our area. If you check the Bayside Marine site you will see that there are still some big fish out of Santa Cruz and their temps and chlorophyll are the same as ours. When they were getting the huge bluefin a few years back the fish were in cold green water only 11 mi out. The weather is predicted to be great this week so I hope some of you go out looking. Based on the satilite data I would go to the San Luis Buoy and watch my meeter and look for any bird life sitting on the water. The soonest I can get out to look is Sunday unfortunately.

Den:
Today's chlorophyll image shows some blue water in that area but I didn't process it for lat/lon info. I will if anyone is thinking of going down there to check it out. Let me know. Just based on this season's history for our area I doubt that there are any albacore there but maybe bluefin.

Steve, never put a pot in, so am not speaking from personal experience, but have heard from commercial fishermen friends that the dungies do occasionally pop up around here. They are highly migratory (hundreds of miles), but do not always show up down here, and when they do they are usually in relatively small numbers and hard to find. Your best bet would probably be to find a commercial crabber and pick his brain a little bit - if you can find someone willing to share that information. Good luck!

Local Dungies???
I recently moved back to the area after living in N. Cal and Oregon for the past 12 years. I used to do a lot of crabbing for dungenes crab and thought I would miss out on it down here.
However, I recently read a F&G biological report on dungies and it says that their range extends down to Pt. Conception and they fish for them commercially out of PSL and MB.
Does anyone crab for dungeis around here? I'm not looking for spots, just curious if they are around in enough numbers to go out and target.
thanks,
steve
