If you do fish the buglights you might get a keeper and a lot of short Blackfish.

If you do, throw out a chunk, the Blues and Stripers are around.

I'm taking off work on Friday (10/22) and want to go wreck fishing. I was planning on hitting the Rockaway reef or SH reef but right now it looks like its going to be too snotty. Are there any porgies by the GK buglight or the rock pile by Lemon creek?

Nick you might be getting this too late. I dont troll. I have a downrigger and some umbrella rigs and like a lot of my must have tackle it doesnt get used. I would anchor up at the mouth of GK harbor and chunk at sunset. The other weekend I got some slammer blues like that and was hoping for stripers. It lasted about 20 minutes and then was over. We boated 3 big ones and lost a couple.I plan on targeting sunsets from here on out depending on weather etc. Looks like I might not get out untill sunday. Oh. Kmart on richmond ave had the panther shad umbrella rigs. That was a couple months ago.

Would def be willing to do that. I wish we had more fisherman of this area on this site. We have a great group now but this community is very small. I wish we had a modern VBulletin Raritan Bay forum Hey, maybe ill make one in the winter.

May be heading out for sunset, its too nice out there and thanks to jury duty this evening I have the night off and I cant waste it!

Really want to get into some blues, I cant believe im having a hard time with them...

Also looking to pick up an umbrella rig, where are some gods spots to troll it?

Sorry to hear that Nick. You must have burned a tank of gas. I dont run around that much anymore.Knocks the heck out of me and I have an open boat. I hit a couple of spots pre planned and thats it. It would be nice if a couple of us were out on the same day hitting different spots and then call by phone or radio to let each other know how we're doing. That way more water is covered. Anyway Nick next time your up the Hudson try the old navy peir pilings.

Out all day and all over from 0800-1600. fishing was extremely slow. Started at the back of GK Harbor after getting gas, no dice. Ran to Old Orchard, nothing going on. Headed out towards the Hook, one sandshark. Decided to run to Breezy Point, on the way ran into some diving birds, fished there for a while throwing metal, poppers and soaking bait, no action. Nothing when we finally got to Breezy. Fished past the VZ off of where the Alice Austen house / Edgewater street is, nothing. Headed back to my trusty old rockpile by Lemon Creek and grabbed 6 or 7 short tog.

It was a bit cloudy with patchy rain this morning but it cleared up and the water smoothed out after noon-ish.

Dan, I don't eat them either, I usually toss them back. This one was gut hooked, so I asked if Sal or Lloyd wanted it before I cut my hook. Lloyds neighbor eats them, so that's where he went.

Target was the yellow eyed demons and the striped ones.

As usuall she got the larger one. Not bad for local water. We had 3 shorts and a lot of misses. Conditions were real nice out there. G, nice blue! I wish I liked to eat em.

Dan GREAT GOING. Keep an eye on the back of the harbor, Stripers will be there. I use to tie up to the mooring buoys just off the ramp in around 30' of water. If you can find the hole where it goes to 50' do it there.

Great BLUE !!!!

I am not hearing much, so I can safely say, not much going on.

The Blues should be tearing up the place by now, nothing?

Do any of you see PNUTZ?

We hit Breezy yesterday looking for Albies, Blues and Bass, NOTHING, but nice 5' to 7' swells.

Went back into the bay after a few hours to catch the following, four short Seabass, one Kingfish, four short Fluke, one was the smallest Fluke I have ever caught, three short Weakfish, two rockin' Robins and a bunch of Porgies, which nine were kept for Sal and Lloyd. Caught one double header, Weak and Porgy.

All fish were returned safely except for those unlucky nine.

Dan, to answer your question first, before I post my report from yesterday.
The spring is the best time for fishing south (towards Old Orchard) and North (towards the harbor). You catch Blues and Bass all over. The Fall, I find staying North (towards the harbor) better because of the PNUTZ and the bait fish get caught in and around the harbor. I have always caught big Blues around my favorite, West Bank, anchoring and chunking.

I hope that helped you out?

G

I just talked to a friend of mine and was told the Albies are all over, especially around Breezy. He was out yesterday by the islands and they were flying all around, but he couldn't hook up.

Will be heading to breezy tomorrow and try to hook a few.

Nick, great catch. I never heard of them being by the islands, good going.

This time of year, I usually catch my big blues anchored up just off of Ambrose by the West Bank Light. Go off the channel until you hit 25' of water and anchor up. You will get a ton of sharks this time of year also.

Might be heading out tomorrow for Weaks and Albies.

ALBIE ALERT!

Wow, what an AMAZING fish, great balance of beauty and power.

Caught this guy near Hoffman on a 1/2 oz deadly dick. They were breaking water. Even had one jump out of the water no more than two feet from my stern, do a half barrell roll, look at us, and take off. Awesome! Im addicted to albacore!

Aside from this guy we caught about 7 sandsharks, 4 searobins, a fat 17" fluke on a piece of bunker (!), and a skate. Saw a ton of life in the water todayu but none of our target species, bluefish. Where the hell are they?

Anyway as of 1300 its really rough out there, NOAA said it would be fine until this evening, yeah they were wrong.

Giorgio- Michaels gas dock is the one that has the flags outside? I think the pumps say Statewide gas or something along those lines, right?

That is the only place I stop for gas. the guy at Mansion is never there. I stopped going there last season.

Nick, sorry about the break down. That is a real bumer and ruins a planed day on the water. Hope it all works out with the repair. Get it ready for the fall stripers. If you noticed the water was between 65 and 68 today.

I passed the hook about 8.30 heading out to the scotland grounds, probably a few minutes too early or late. I could have used a blitz. I also hit the sandy hook reef. All we got for the whole day were 3 just barely keeper sea bass. Minus about 8 rigs and about $75 in gas. Water was nice, fishing slow for us.

Nick, outboard or I/O? Did you hit something or bottom out? You might have stripped the hub if you have an I/O, i've done that. The kit costs about $25-40.00. Take off the prop and it's the plastic insert, just slide it out and replace it. That's for the I/O. There is a reason they are made of hard plastic, SS props don't give like alum. ones do, so instead of ruining a $400 prob, spin the hub.

Outboards, not sure with that, might have stripped the spindle?

Hope that helps a bit.

Headed out around 0830 or so and ran straight for the hook.

Ran into a blitz and hung around for it. A nice blue bit off my Hopkins jig, and also grabbed a small sea robin. Not sure what the birds were diving for as they were very small, probably some sort of tiny baitfish.

Was on my way to the mud buoy (only 4 miles out!) when all of a sudden the engine roared and we stopped...

I wirte this post from my cabin as I'm being towed in by Boat US. I think we spun the prop, need to figure out how to fix this!

Be careful over there, I got water in my gas a few times, plus it's citco gas. I do not by gas from chavez. I started getting my gas from Michaels when they opened up, brand new tanks and no water. I don't know if they still do it, but 10% off if you pay cash.

Just talked to a friend of mine and he told me they are picking up big Blues with an occassional striper in the mix (stripers real early in the AM), in the back of the harbor. You can do two things, find a spot and drift a chunk or tie up to a mooring buoy and chunk.

Out today from what should have been 0900 but turned into 1010 since the gas guy at Nichols who was out for "breakfast" never came back. Guess who else is never coming back? Me. Good job losing my business.

Anchored near Old Orchard managed only one decent teen blue and 2 sandsharks. Came in around 1330.

Will be out there again tomorrow hopefully will have better news to report!

They have been jigging them up around Breezy, you can also anchor up and chunk by the Old Orchard Light, tie up to a mooring buoy in the back of the harbor.

What Red Tide? The water around Breezy and in JB were clear. Maybe just brownish from the storm surge.

Dan, not a mackeral, it's long, gray in color with little light stripes or lines. You can't target them, they are so few and hard to find. The bait would be the same as a Porgy, clams, worms or both. I caught mine on a Gulp Shrimp, the same as the Weak.

GOTTA LOVE THAT GULP SHRIMP !!!

We use to catch them in the OLD DAY'S when I was young, now just now and then. They are really good eating if I remember correctly.

Now if and when I catch one, back it will go. That was my second one in three years.

Nick
Just to let you know when I passed over the VZ this afternoon, (Tuesday) The water around the Bridge had a purple tinge to it and it looked to be heading out to sea
So maybe it won't be that bad for us with the
winds supposedly coming out of the NW starting
on Wednesday!

Red tide in NY Harbor

Anyone have any further information on this?

What impact, if any, will this have on fishing this area?

I made it to the rockaway reef today. Fishing was slow. The fleet was there. After boating one small keeper sea bass we moved over to the scotland grounds. 2 small keepers and one keeper fluke and we called it a day. Nice day on the water, fishing was slow. Winds seemed to kick up about 1.30pm.
