Got an invite from Jason to go surf fishing for Barred Surf Perch; however, since I got to go major bendo on the Perch this past weekend, I opted to do a quick evening fishing trip after work, with Jason “jscrib” aboard my 15ft aluminum “Red Drum”. Got on the water in Marina Del Rey harbor at 5:30pm and fished until the sun went down.
The fishing wasn’t wide open, but we still had a fun time. The highlight of the evening for both of us, was getting humbled/broken-off by a couple of wide shouldered and structure savvy Calico’s that sawed us off on 20lb test. Ouch! I hate when that happens. After licking our wounds on those two incidents, we vowed not to let those big bad Calicos embarrass us again. Unfortunately, we didn’t hook up with another Bull Bass.
We did manager to catch 4 Calico Bass, 8 Brown Rockfish and 1 Opaleye.

Did a quick evening trip with surf fishing specialist Jason "jscrib" aboard my 15ft aluminum skiff "Red Drum". Fished some misc, rockpiles in the Santa Monica Bay for a slow pick on Calicos, Sandies and Sculpin from 6pm to 8pm. Then between 8pm and 9pm the bigger Calicos went on a pretty chew. Here I am with my biggest Calico of the evening at almost 22 inches. The next drop I nailed one at 21 inches. Nice grade of Calicos for sure.

Here I am again with one of the many Calico that really started biting good around 8pm. I was loving the nice size of the Calicos we were catching. Many in the 17 - 20 inch size with the beautiful gold noses.

Here I am with my first ever Peacock Bass that I caught last Friday while I was on vacation on the island of Kauai. They are probably the hardest pulling and most acrobatic freshwater fish I've every caught. Caught 8 of them and 2 Largemouth Bass at one of the many ponds/lakes on the Island Kauai. Can't wait to go back to the island again, it was awesome.

The water temp in the SMB last night was around 70.5 degrees and the winds were light. Can't wait to do another evening Bass trip. HOOK-UP!! |

Santa Monica Bay Report 4-24-2004
Went fishing with Jason "jscrib" Scribner aboard my 15ft Duroboat "Red Drum". Left Marina Del Rey around 6:30am and waved to John "Flomar" Collar as we past the Inseine Bait dock.
With only one tide for the day, a low tide at 7:33am, I knew it was going to be a tough catching day. The first rock pile we fished gave up 2 Triggerfish, Jason's first (darn I wish I would've brought my camera) and a legal 23inch Halibut that Jason caught. For a second I thought it might not be too slow of a day, but unfortunately my first assumption was correct. The fish were never on an aggressive chew, just a slow pick throughout the day.
Ended the day with a total of 1 Halibut, 2 Triggerfish, 1 Calico Bass, 4 Sand Bass, 2 Sculpin, 7 Olive Rockfish and 2 Blacksmith Perch.
We did see quite a few areas of really strong red tide. I sure hope it doesn't last as long as it did last year. Had a fun time fishing with Jason and look forward to getting back out there again in the near future.

Isn't life great, especially for Southern California anglers, considering we can "just about" fish 52 weeks out of the year. Got to love that, in a big kind of way, if your as addicted to fishing as I am.
Got lucky enough to fish 4 times this week which added up to a whopping total of 72 times of fishing/catching for me this year. Yippee! I've already broken my record for fishing in a year and there are still 71 fishing days left in the year.
This will be a tough year to beat.
Fished Sunday 10/12 out of Channel Island Harbor for an early morning potential White Sea Bass bite near Port Hueneme canyon with Steve Babcock and Dave Burgis for nada. Saw one 30lb WSB caught and then decided to leave once the Sporties started to leave. We then left for Santa Rosa Island for limits of Rockfish and I caught my personal best Lingcod of 16.5lbs. Sweeeet!!
Fished Wednesday 10/15 night again with Steve Babcock aboard my 23ft Seaswirl Striper "BIG DRUM" at one of my favorite rock piles for limits of tasty Lobsters to 5 pounds.
Both Steve and I burned vacations days on Thursday 10/16 and fished out of Marina Del Rey between 11am and 2:30pm. We called Dave who had just finished up with a business meeting and he couldn't resist the invitation to come fishing with Steve and I for a mid-afternoon quickie. We ended up having a great trip when I got lucky enough to find an awesome natural rock pile in 170 feet out in the beautiful Santa Monica Bay.
Here is Dave "Speed Reeler" Burgis with one of the twenty plus endangered and oh so smelly JS Bocaccio's that wouldn't leave us alone. I still can't believe how fast Dave can reel Rockfish to the boat, those Rockfish probably never knew what bit/hit them.

Fished Saturday 10/18 with Joe Kocrak and his girlfriend Nancy aboard "BIG DRUM" at the Horseshoe Kelp area. Launched out of the Queen's Way ramp in Long Beach and did a B line to Bill's bait receiver at 5am. Anchored near the receiver and caught 84 Mackerel within an hour and twenty minutes. Headed out to the Shoe area around 6:30am; We first fished Atlantis, Lobster and Herb Curley Rock for nada and then we moved out to Bull Kelp for again nada. Then went to Tom's Rock, Near Tom's and NW Tom's for finally 2 keeper Vermilion Rockfish, 1 keeper Whitefish, 1 gazillion Cinnamon Rockfish, 4 Sculpin, 1 Sand Bass and 1 baby 12lb Mako Shark. Then I made a move to the Big Rock/EE Bubbles area for a 14lb Yellowtail Jack that ate a big Mackerel on the dropper loop. Made it back to the ramp 10 minutes before the International Speed Ski Racing Contest began at 12:00am.
What an awesome week, can't wait to get back on the water. FRESH-ONE!!

The Slayer, Slayed'em. Last month I took my boat out (The Halibut Slayer) and we FLAT SLAYED'EM. There was three of us and we all limited out (Largest 20pds, the smallest was 8pd. I have to say that was the best halibut fishing trip I've ever had. They were hitting constancely all day, from the first drift to the last. We were fishing outside the Long Beach Breakwall, near the lighthouse. If you get a chance and you want to nail the butts (Please go, you won't regret it) |

fishing sucks lossers. just messing with you the cabrilo beach has very little fish don't their. the ventura pier has good sharkfishing going on because of the heat wave. |

On Sunday,June 3. large numbers of White Sea Bass were being caught outside of the marina del rey breakwater.They were aprox.1/4 mi out from the flag pole located at the end of the marina.The bass were from 20 to 60 lb.Live squid was available in the marina.Most of the private boaters had limits With barracuda and sand bass thrown in.The white sea bass were most active between 5-9 am.A second wave of fish hit around noon. |
