Good day today for us on the albacore. The bait was large anchovie, the water condition was good, the visibility was so good that we could see the channel islands. The warmest water temp was 57.5 and was a little green. We saw fish breaking at 30 mi on a 230 from Morro Bay and bait fished for four nice ones over 40 lbs. Later we caught one more on live bait by spotting the birds for a total of 5 by noon and then we came in and finished with some good rock cod fishing off Buchon. The #s were 35:08 and 121:27. Excellent letter Chris!! You hit the nails square. I would also send your letters either directly to or copied ("cc") to Honorable Congresswoman Lois Capps, 1707 Longworth House Office Bldg., Washington DC, 20515. She is the Representative that covers the coast here. Back in '99 the PSL, Arguello, and Santa Barbara channel buoys were all slated to go away. But thanks in part to a massive outcry they all got re-funded. When I contacted the buoy people back then, they said to write your Congressional reps, as they control the funding. So make sure that both the buoy people and Capps get your letters. Our letter is going out soon... Eric Endersby Chief Harbor Patrol Officer MB Harbor Patrol |

Hi Folks, Here is the letter I sent off to both NDBC Deputy Director Dan Henderson and Director Paul Moreorsdorf. Dear Mr. Henderson, Last week the offshore weather buoy, off of Port San Louis, California, was de-commissioned and taken out of service. This buoy was instrumental in the lives of many people who live on the south and central coast. The buoy provided vital weather information that was used to determine the safety and well being of the many people who work and recreate on and offshore of Central California. The impact of removing this weather buoy is far reaching. Many recreational and commercial fishermen would monitor the buoy to determine whether or not to take their boats offshore fishing. Without the buoy, people will have no way to know what the offshore conditions are and many lives will be endangered. The removal of the buoy will cause unnecessary offshore rescues for the Harbor Patrol, The Coast Guard and other boaters. Off shore rescues are not only dangerous for those being rescued but also for the rescuers. People who use the beaches and stay close to shore also depend on the data provided by the weather buoy as it is a leading indicator of what is to be expected later in the day as offshore conditions move onshore. The weather buoys along the coast of California together provide an offshore safety net and valuable, potentially life saving information for many people, public agencies, private citizens, tax payers and voters. Please help us re-establish the Port San Louis weather buoy and continue the funding for California’s offshore weather stations. The well being of many constituents is on the line here. I welcome your response and am ready to help to get the San Louis Weather Buoy back in service. Sincerely, Chris Heimlich If anyone has e-mail addresses and or mailing addresses of other government officials who should hear from us, please post them. Chris Sur Reel |

As Mr. Bill would say, "Ooooohhhhh nnnoooooooooo!" The Cape San Martin buoy is just as important as the PSL buoy. It tells us what is coming down the pike folks! All these buoys are both vital forecast tools and real-time indicators of what is going on. With all due respect Bob, please don't suggest to rob Peter to pay Paul by swapping one buoy for another. Because they just might take you up on it. Suggest that an array of buoys spaced along the coast are vital to boating safety, because they all are! The next buoy up the line is at Monterey, and that is just too big a stretch of coast (from Monterey to PSL) to not have a buoy. We at the Morro Bay Harbor Patrol depend highly on them all, and the PSL buoy now leaves a gap. Don't move the gap, fill it back in!!! Eric Endersby Chief Harbor Patrol Officer MB Harbor Patrol |

I will put links at the top of this page for the two weather buoys Arguello and Cape San Martin. Maybe our letters to NOAA should suggest they save money by replacing the two buoys with the old PSL buoy. I plan to run for tuna tomorrow as the weather looks best then.I'll post the results in the evening. Bob |

Well I sent my letter To Mr. Henderson about the San Luis Buoy #46062 The 14 Mi. Buoy is very important to all of us that go fishing out of PSL or MB When I plan a fishing trip I will start checking THE 14 MI BUOY The first part of the week and follow it to the week-end then I have a good idea weather to go or not. I think as sport fishermen we are being challenged on all sides I feel that if we let this go with out a fight, we open the door to all the tree huggers that are trying to stop us from fishing. And enjoying one of the pleasures of life, and sharing this with our kids, and grand kids. Jim Chandler/ Onporpoise Jimnorm1@msn.com

Got a cloudy cholorophyll shot this morning but you can see a lot of blue water starting at 121:15 which is where Waverunner got his fish yesterday. Sent out a bunch of images but if anyone else wants a copy send me an e-mail. |

The waverunner fished at 35 04 and 121 14 and got 5 hook-ups. The first was a troll fish on a Mexican Flag and once we got the bait in the water, it took off. Lost one bait fish. Fish came in between 33-40 pounds. Bite fell off mid day probably due to full moon. Water was a bit bumpy but fishable. No swell just wind chop. There was a .5 temperature break. Water color good. |

Since we lost our buoy may have to use other sources for a while. Here is what the satellite wind map looks like. I haven't used it enough to know how good it is but will be watching it. No useable cholorophyy shot today. If you look at 11-24 1:22pm Terrafin you will see that all the water outside the 122 line has dropped to 57 degrees. Better hurry to get those big inside albacore!!

The Port San Louis Bouy was an excellent source of information for almost all of us who fish offshore of Central California. I checked the bouy often not only to determine conditions 10 miles off shore but also to see what is coming down the coast to the Santa Barbara Channel. Many trips to the offshore grounds have been safley made knowing exactly what weather conditions were at the bouy location. The East Channel bouy was removed several years ago and was re-instated after many letters being sent to NOAA, our local representatives and other interested parties. I encourage you all to take the time to let these people know how important this weather bouy and related information has been to you and maybe it will be considered for re-instating. On November 21st the Pt. San Luis #46062 Weather buoy was "dis-established" by the National Data Buoy Center [ http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46062 ] . This buoy was established in 1997 and paid for by the Federal agency Mineral Management Service (MMS); probably in support of offshore oil exploration (they wanted five years of weather data to determine the risks in drilling in that area?). Funding ran out and the buoy was removed (?) this past Sunday, November 21, 2004. Many boaters and fishermen used this local buoy to determine if it was safe to travel offshore for pleasure and/or fishing. The wind, wave and sea temperature were very helpful and provided good data to protect lives and property as well as help stimulate the local economy in the local fishing communities of Port San Luis and Morro Bay. The NDBC stated that there are other MMS weather buoys in the California coast which have been considered for removal, one such buoy is the PT ARGUELLO Buoy, Station 46023. The Santa Maria Buoy, Station 46011 is not currently being considered for removal, unless federal funding is cut further. In the late 1980's and early 1990's the federal budget was being cut and many buoys were in jeopardy of being dis-continued. With the public support the buoys were funded and are still in use today. Boaters are urged to contact there NDBC and your local representatives in congress to let them know the importance of this boating/weather tools and your support in continued funding. The National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) is taking comments on these matter and which may be sent to: NDBC Deputy Director Dan Henderson at: dan.henderson@noaa.gov The NDBC address and phone number is: Paul Moreorsdorf, Director National Data Buoy Center 1100 Balch Blvd. Stennis Space Center, MS 39529 228-688-2805 A good National Weather Service comment page would also help is you want to make detailed comment see: http://weather.gov/survey/nws-survey.php?code=ndbcsp Jay Elder, Harbor Manager Port San Luis Harbor

NDBC 46062 This is my first attempt at posting a message on the board, hope it works. I contacted Steve Collins at NOAA about the buoy and they tell me the buoy has been retrieved. No realtime data will be available any longer, however the historical data will still be available for that station. The next closest buoy is 21 NM Northwest of Point Arguello Station 46011 34.88 N 120.87 W. You can check Diablo Canyons but it has limited data. Remember to strike 46062 off of your old paper charts and note a waypoint on your GPS for the old buoy. |

"Disestablished" usually means that the buoy is going away for lack of funding. If it were going down for maintenance, or had broken free, it would say so. Disestablished is not good. For a little background, most of the original weather buoys were funded by the Minerals Management Service of the federal government. They were used to predict the travel of potential oil spills from oil platforms. Over the years, the NWS and other weather-oriented agencies such as the National Data Buoy Center have taken some of the buoys (and funding) over. I have absolutely no idea where the PSL buoy got its funding from, or why it may have been cut, but I know some folks in NWS and the Buoy Center and will start asking tomorrow. The PSL buoy may continue reporting until they actually come out and take it away. What can be done? If it is going away, the best thing to do is to play the "safety" card and contact your federal government representatives. Lois Capps being #1. Only Congress can maintain or re-establish funding. Several years ago, the Cape San Martin buoy was successfully re-funded due to an outcry of support for it from users like you all and agencies such as ours (The Morro Bay Harbor Dept.). We'll see what we can do, but let's find out what exactly the buoy's status is first. |

Tried to get out Sat. for the LFT but the weather keep us up north for some quality limits of rock cod. Left early Sun. morning on a 220 heading. Got out about 15 miles and saw a hugh flock of birds and porpoise on the water. We headed over and fished it for nothing. Continued out to about 46 miles off of Morro Rock and hit 61 and 62 degree water. Metered some bait, not much life, only had one boat near us catch one tuna on a blind jug strike. We also boxed area for awhile and then headed in due to a long drive in and back to home. At least we got to put some salt water on the new lures we bought! Didn't hear much of anything. It was a beautiful day on the water for us and we even saw a couple of killer whales. |

Went out of MB on Nida Marie. Picked up one nice LFT on bird activity 30 miles out on a 210. Forgot the numbers but called them out on the radio for all to hear. No other chatter of fish caught or numbers called out. Proceded outside to 50 miles on a 210 but no more hookups. Pretty bumpy and sloppy, hope the wind continues to lay down or tomorrow could be real uncomfortable. |

Launched from PSL today, bit of a late start getting the last of Deke's bait. Took a 220, started fishing @ 50 miles out to 60 & turned west. We were in good water, but no life. I think we saw more freighters than birds, pretty sloppy all the way. Started kicking up a bit more @ 1:00, headed for the barn. Thanks Harrell, you put us in the clean water, but nobody home. Happy Thanksgiving all. Oh, I figured out today, trim tabs are a godsend. |

Weather/cholorophyll; Well the weather is not as advetised ! Blowing 20-25 at the Santa Maria buoy and more at the San Martin buoy. Did get a wide open cholorophyll shot though that shows the blue water at the donut/elbow/1908 areas. I sent out a bunch of copies but if I missed anyone or if anyone wants a copy send me an e-mail. |

Dont think I would bother with the CSM bouy. The break that was there a few days ago is gone and just scattered water holding all in that area. Either go out at a 230 and run the 57 miles to the outside break below the elbow or run at at a 210 towards to the donut where the break is holding at 47 miles from Morro. Scratchy at best, but the last place the blue water was holding was both of those areas. Good luck to those that run. On the sidelines for the weekend with boat work and family stuff. Dustin |

The Waverunner tried to get out this morning. Got out to 20 miles and gave up as the wind was blowing 20-25 and the seas were confused. Harder getting back than going out and could not run. The wind waves were contrary to the swell so threw lots of spray. Water temp was 59. I didn't hear from anyother boats so no idea how it was farther out. |

fished the 35 + mile spot on wed. with John and Michelle Rowley on the Admiral/Virg`s.We had 9 bluefin in the #20-30lb class (all on bait),and 70+/- on the nicer albies with only one or two "peanuts".Only 2 troll fish. All the action was a slow steady pick on breaking fish under birds and drifting on metermarks. They tell you to use the heavy string but #20-25lb with little or no weight clearly got bit better even with the large healthy sardines.Using artificials,I got 1 slide fish on a fishtrap and 1 lost opportunity at gaff on a silver megabait, the rest on bait....Live bait is the clear choice on these finicky fish...go get `em!!!!...jeff |

Here is the skinny on the boat on the rocks Wednesday morning. This is Eric Endersby of the Morro Bay Harbor Patrol. About 0500 on Wednesday morning the Davis Cortez 22 "Ashley Ann" somehow got disoriented leaving the harbor. I have heard about 4 different versions of the how and why. It was pea soup fog, 2-4 foot seas. Somehow the boat was driven onto the north jetty, about 100 yards from the tip. They radioed a mayday, which was replied to by the Coast Guard. The CG responded with a 47' motor lifeboat, and we in the Harbor Patrol were also called-in as we were off duty at that point. Once we started to respond by boat, the Coasties made verbal contact with the three aboard and determined that everyone was OK. The boat had come to rest upright in a rock pocket, and the three scrambled off and over to the bay side. My partner and I picked them off of the jetty on the inside and brought them back to shore about 0530. At first light we dropped an Officer on the jetty on the bay side, who went over and attached a tow line to the stern of the boat (at some risk to his own hide I might add, as the boat was being constantly pounded back and forth where it was stuck). We got lucky and towed it off and back to the ramp. The outdrive leg was gone, and the boat was pretty badly holed, but we managed to keep up with the flow with the help of the Coasties and got the boat back on the owner's trailer. Folks, please please please be careful out there. These guys were very lucky to all go home alive. Had the surf only been a few feet bigger, or had they hit the jetty at full speed instead of at a slow bell as they said, the outcome would probably have been far worse. Know your boat, know your harbor, know your ocean. Go out on clear days and practice with your radar and chart plotters. Go out on a calm clear night and get oriented in the dark. It is a totally different world in the fog and dark, and the time to learn is not when it is critical. And don't rely entirely on your elecronics. Get a paper chart and learn how to plot positions and courses. You guys all know the numbers when you are out there chasing tuna. What happens when the plotter goes south? You had better know how to use a paper chart and a compass to get home. Practice it. On a foggy day go out and sit offshore and drift. Try to figure out which direction the beach is from the seas and swells without looking at your plotter or radar. And don't ever hesitate to ask us or the Coast Guard questions. Not everyone has the local knowledge that we do, and we'd be more than happy to pass it on. The only stupid question is the one not asked. I didn't bring all this stuff up to say that the guys on the Ashley Ann didn't know it or somehow blew it. Who know what happened Wednesday. Accidents happen. We know, just come down to our office and ask us about our screw-ups! Be safe out there, and maybe I'll see you out there this Sunday if things look good. |

Jim, The boat that was on the rocks was a small open boat. The guy who saw it happen said it was a Whaler but that is not confirmed. We went out just after the coast guard picked up the three boaters from the rocks. There were no injuries and the boat was so far on the rocks, that none of them went in the water. It was wednesday morning at about 0600. We saw the boat as we went out and it was on the outside of the jetty about 200 feet from the point. The boat who saw the incident said the boat in question passed him in the harbor mouth and was moving pretty fast. He turned north after clearing the harbor mouth and went on the rocks. The fog was sitting low on the water. Good thing no one was hurt. |

Weather/chlorophyll; Pretty ugly out there this morning but the forecast indicates good weather saturday and better sunday. On the latest chlorophyll image our area of interest is covered with clouds but the areas that are visible are about the same as the last picture. |

I talked to Gene on the Malena, 27 ft Raddon, and he just got back from bouncing around out there today. He was as far as 62 Miles at about a 215, and had 4 for 8 up to 45 LBS. The fish were on a temp break where the water went from 59 up to 62. 3 on the troll and 1 on bait. He had three guys who had never been out for tuna before who were chumming when the bite was on or would have had more fish. Rough weather though and he was glad to back on shore. He talked with a couple of other boats who did no go quite the distance and reportedly did not have any luck at all. The Admiral had 30+ today. Hopefully they will move back in a little closer when the weather settles down this weekend so those of us with boats that can not quite go that far can have a shot at them. Chris Sur Reel |

I just wanted to thank all of you that are willing to share, from some one like me who doesn't get to go much, all the great fishing info. Some friends and I are going to try and get out this weekend for tuna after a 2 year dry spell. It makes a huge difference in heading out and not wasting so much time and fuel. I got stuck in last year due to some health problems and this board was a sanity/reality check for some dreary days. I'll make sure we get some kind of post out at the end of the weekend. Thanks again. |

I was on the Admiral Wednesday. I don,t know the #'s but we left to go home at around 5pm and hit the dock at 8:30PM. I think we were doing about 14 knots that should get the distance. Fishing conditions were perfect, just enough wind to make the drift right. Slow morning bite then from about 11AM to quiting time steady fishing on 4 or 5 bait stops. The most action around 5PM......only 2 or three jig fish the rest on bait. Fish didn't like the iron. Most fish were metered 60 to 150 feet. Long soaks and weight were the ticket. All the bluefin on the long soak. Didn't see the jumpers, maybe that was the key to stay out of the boneheads and skippys? THE FISH WERE COWS!!!! I hope this helps.......I will be out next week in my own boat(tues or wed)if the ocean lets me? There were at least a dozen private boats in the area around the Admiral maybe they will report and have better info for you guys. |

The guy your talking about with the bft bite was John on the Admiral. You can expect him to call out those numbers do you? He would have 100 boats on him. He was out another 20 miles from you. I heard you on the radio as your were not pleased. |

We were out with the crowd on wednesday also and got a ton of boneheads but no albies. There were a lot of people on the radio who were sharing info but I think most were having the same luck. Heard some guys on fish that were talking between themselves and were tight lipped with any location info. They switched to the "santa Barbara Channel", whatever that is, so they didn't have people hearing where they were catching fish. One of these guys was also on a boil of BFT and would not say where. I'm sure it was not the people who post here that were part of the "no say nada" crowd. For those of you who are part of that crowd, thanks for nothing. Nice to hear all of the people willing to help BBQ with the mechanical problems they were having. We may make one more run if the weather will allow this weekend. We fished in the 34/58 area and worked that area all day. Nice day on the water. Chuggar D , Thanks for the drain plug, you saved our morning. |

Fished out of MB for 11 albies, to low 40's. I had some talent onboard so that helped alot!Caught fish over a very wide area. Took a chance and ran away from the fleet all the way up to 35.04 (dead and no life) but water to 61.5. The Bp cedars worked best on 60 FC for 4 jig strikes. I farmed one on a natural cedar. Yes, I live in Ojai, lol! Also got impatient and busted on of at gaff. These are tough fall fish gang, I hung one on a TlD 30 that took 3 100-plus yard runs! Final est weight, 36-lbs. Water is pushing north. Stopped at Gaviota on the way trailering home and put up the atenna. Spoke with a friend out on the Rodriguez at 9 am but they were still 5-mile shy of the bankand running hard. Thanks Bob Hather for the help looking for crew. Also, to Dustin and Harrell for the overviews. Fog is dense. Keep it off the rocks gang. |

Monday was more than decent! I had never seen it like that before. but everybody (I think, cause I notified everybody on the radio after I had 8 in 1 1/2 hours and ended up with 12)thought that I was joking when the bite was ON at 49&15, nobody wanted to believe me. It was all you can eat and more. I had to stop because my boat was FULL! So the fish are in. I know, easy for me to say, but it was so outrageous that nobody believed what I was going through, those fish wore me out!

Another tough one for us. Tell you what, this year has about killed me with running the distance time and time again for no real numbers. Monday was decent ...but since those bone heads moved in about 12pm on Monday afternoon its been all downhill since. Some good numbers up and out from the donut area, three privates got into them pretty good. We stopped short since we made a late decision to run out there. Oh well ...always next week. Dustin |

Good news and bad news! Good news is there is a lot of albacore out there and the bad news is they are pretty far out. The party boats did great today but they were out 60+ NM . The sporties did not do very well. I was out 50 SM for nada and that was the rule of the day for most. Deke has great bait ! I didn't have any bait roll all day, not even a bloody nose.I slushed it before I got home and bagged and froze it and it looks like premium tray bait. Deke will have bait for a while now so if you can go the distance do it ! |

We ended up heading out on Tuesday for a total of 5 (40,38,35,30,28) and tons of bones. Trolling was out, bone city, but rubber core 1oz dropped on any mark..including a single return work for us. Hot bait on the drop were the only ones hit. We were 5 mi short of the nut. Break was really mushy...hard to find..warmest water was 60.5 Started around the numbers below and worked out. Thanks all for posting info here! Dave |

Fishing was really good today...for bonito. We probably caught 50 of them little bastards. We worked out of MB about 45 miles, a little N of the fleet to start the day. Water was full of life, but a little off color @ 06 and 35. We headed S for wide open bonito bites, then headed W to the only fish number's given all day (thanks BBQ), I think it was 56 and 24. Guess what...more wide open bonito action. Saw one fish at the ramp, they were 48 out on a 210. Probably 50+ boats out today and I only heard of a handful of fish caught. Tough day of fishing. The up side was I got to fish with Gary Grahm on the Aluminator...the sweetest ride I've ever been on. It is a 28' alum boat with a 10' beam!!! Diesel powered and acres of deck space. It was a fun day and the crew was well trained practicing on the bonito. Good luck to those heading out tomorrow. best fishes, steve |

I was at the MB launch ramp at 3:45 and three boats returned with only one albacore. One boat lost 2. The fleet was out further today at about 50 mi. They said you could catch all the bonito you wanted under the birds. The Princes had about 20 fish. Lets hope the reports from the other boats improve. Bob |

New shimano trinidad 30 for sale $325 - bought last year - used it twice. I didn't like the drag and I'm not into changing it myself. I sent it into shimano two months ago, and they serviced it and said it is "fine" - I'm switching to AVET Jim Nailen 545-4049 or 235-6474 |
