Fished hard sat april 28, weather was ok big bump short periods, started at the gap and down to the three rigs and to arco and back up. Not much on the meter as for bait, water color was a nice green and blue, fished all depth and lines were clean all day! The fleet was about 5 boats not one person had anything . I did stop on the way in about two miles off Montecito on a huge bird school and bait ball, boxed the area for nothing. I did hear that there is a huge break out 6 to 7 miles out in the the deep water with birds and bait, who knows. Another day but no love looking to head up north next weather break to Avila.

Hey Guys,
Slipped out on Sunday early morning to not so nice of weather, but it all turned around after 9 am to sheet glass. Started out off carp in 135 feet of water and down towards Rincon/Arco. Buddy called me said he had one in the box off of Rincon. As soon as I got into the area I was on! Fish put up a good fight and extra fun because I was by myself. Fish went 17lbs 34 in. Seemed to meeter some small marks around 60 to 75 feet down and that's where I got bit! Water is not blue anymore like last week nice and green salmon water. Hope to get back out there soon!solo

Long day yesterday trying to find life and some salmon. Left the harbor at 5:30 and headed to the gap and down and out several times. We worked it form 160 up to 230 as we herd some guys got them in the deep water for nothing we boxed the area for 4 hours, not mention that i did not see any bait. There was about 4 boats out there and did not hear much, i did hear there was bait down by arco but in shallow and nothing home. I made the move up the coast after fishing the area hard, fished light house 150 to 210 for a few hours for nothing! I must say there was way more life up there with birds crashing and bait on the meter. It was such a nice day I cannot complain, might have to head up north very soon!

Bayside hasn't posted yet today, but said yesterday that the commercials were seen working off the point. Any one else have any contacts up there that can help confirm?

Owen, the only thing I've heard of lately on the salmon front was two off the light house a couple of weeks ago. I heard the Arguello reports too, but that was before the winds. Maybe those Arguello fish will show up in PSL. Good to hear that the Ooblies bit localy. Good luck on Fri. I'd give it a try this weekend, but I'll be out of town. Look forward to your report.

Fished out front around the 4 mile and down by the armpit for limit of rock fish all really good fish. Didn't meter too much bait out there but I did notice a commercial guy and few guys trolling down by Rincon and Arco. Has any one herd of any of late? I did talk to a commercial buddy who was fishing up at Arguello and had almost 50 fish for 3 days. Either way Im going to give it a look on Friday!

Salmon fished Monterey Saturday and Sunday. Caught 3 on Saturday on the mooch from 40 to 150. Fished the west side of the Soquel hole for one and the north edge of the canyon for the other two. They went 8 to 15 lbs dressed. Zero on Sunday. Oobaly fish Sunday afternoon for EZ limits near soldiers club. Caught two big reds (6.5 on the digital scale!) Lots of canary rock fish up there which look like reds at a glance but are not legal to keep. Luckly I had a local on board that knew what to look for. Canarys have smooth skin on their lower jaw where as reds have rough skin. You all probably knew that, but thought I'd give a heads up. LOTS of F&G up there so watch your Ps&Qs if you go.

Made our first trip of the season out of sb. Fished out by the rigs for salmon. 1 short.
Lots of dirty water and krill on the inside around 150 ft. Fish came on a green croc 90 ft down on the wire.
Beautiful day, 80 degrees and no wind at all.

Kyle, the 311 is about 25 miles south of Santa Rosa Island, it shows on TempBreak.com as the Santa Rosa Buoy. I fished about 15 mis. west of there today and found 60 degree blue water but no LFT. The water was good, but there was no life there, oh well, nothing ventured nothing gained! I was the only boat in the area so who knows if the entire warm water plume was sterile or just where I was.

Fished off of Goleta Pier yesturday(5-3-10) with fairly good action. Started at 9am fishing off the end of the the pier for bait, and caught about half a bucket of mackerals and spanish mackerals in about an hour. I was using fish skin hiyabusa rigs. I then fished mid-pier in the kelp for rock fish with mackeral strips. The action was slow till 4 pm, that's when the sardines showed up. With live sardines I caught three rock fish, one guitar fish, a large banjo, one ocotopus, and one keeper calico bass. No halibuts or salmon seen caught, but many small sharks swimming at the shoreline.

I fished off of Goleta Pier this monday and it was just too full of bait fish to catch anything big. With a whole medium live sardine, I caught a 20 pound bat ray(released), two small shovel nose sand sharks(released), and 4 rock fish(cooked). You have to fight the sardiines, jack smelts, mackerals, and spanish mackerls just to get to the bottom. The west side is best, but lost two set ups to snags, so bring lots of weights and hooks. No halibit seen today, and ur bait won't last long on the bottom with all the small crabs on the sand. Fishing mid pier was best, and west side was better because of less bait fish, but the 50 miles per hour wind was in ur face.

I am camping at Gaviota Beach on Easter Sunday. Is it worthwhile to surf fish from there? What will I catch-what should I use?
Thanks!

Hey Dave, not much action on this board.
for SB charters call Sea Landing 805-963-3564
they do Tuna trips occasionally, but not this time of year, wait till Fall for the Albacore.

Rockfish is the only game in town right now, maybe some Bass. with warmer water temps the Bari's and Bones may show soon

www.stardustsportfishing.com has daily counts

Anyone know of a good charter in the Santa Barbara, Ca area? We would like to go out for something other than Rock Cod. Maybe tuna or something else.

Thanks in advance

Hows the fishing been in SB? No new posts? I went out last week off Leadbetter and caught a few small jack smelts and a perch fishing in about 15 feet - nothing too exciting but fun anyway. This is the first time I have been in a while and the bait tank didnt work so I had to use Squid.

Gull Island and the Potato Patch produced some great reds along with lots of whitefish today. The closure areas must be loaded!!?? Pretty nasty conditions though, even compared to PSL waters.

surfrunr, there have been some Salmon caught here. Nearly all of them have been caught between Rincon and Rock Island in 130-170 feet of water, anywhere from 70-100 feet down. Majority of fish have been caught on rotary killers behind flashers. The grade of fish has been nice as well, about 16 lbs. on average with the biggest going 28lbs! Go get 'em.

3 confirmed Salmon catches as of 12pm Sunday. My friend has a 15lber, the other 2 were caught by a local PB and went 14# & 18#. The latter also had a 3rd knockdown. These fish were caught over 150-170 feet, 100 feet OTW just outside and east of the row of 3 rigs (Henry, Houchin, and Hogan, west to east). All fish were caught on rotary killers. Very little bait presence in the area apparently, but we'd rather catch salmon than bait right?! Let's go get 'em.

Went King Salmon fishing with Steve "sbabcock_20", Dave "night8hawk" and Jim "salmonlurker" aboard Steve's luxurious 20ft Trophy "FISH ON IT". For a boat that is less than one year old, that friggin' vessel has been a very cost-effective fish catching machine.

We launched out of Santa Barbara at 5:30am and went out in about 190ft of water off the Lighthouse. We were using two Cannon Uni-Troll downriggers that we borrowed from Mr. Gracious aka Brad "NoLDR". Thank a million Brad for letting use your gear. I still had the gimbal mounts for the downriggers that I bought 2 years ago when we had the last good run on Salmon in the northern SoCal Bite. We started trolling with 2 rods on each downrigger. One downrigger had a red salmon rotary killer at 155ft and a White Flutter Spoon aka "Danny Special" at 110ft. The other downrigger had a 2.25 oz White/Green Mackerel Kroc set at 160ft and a chartreuse salmon rotary killer at 100ft.

After trolling for 1 1/2 hours we finally got a double hook in 160ft of water on the deep rods. I grab one rod and Steve grabbed the other. After a short little tussle we got both the fish in the boat. Steve's fish weighed 14.75 pounds and the one I pulled in weighed 19.5 pounds. That was Steve's first time to catch a Salmon. Congratulation Steve!! It's just a shame that he opted not to eat the heart of his first King Salmon. Hopefully the Salmon gods won't put the "Mediocre Salmon Catching" jinx on him for the next 50 years. LOL!!

Jim did the honors of taking the pictures. Jim works at Olympic Boats in Canoga Park, give him a call if you're in the market for a new or used boat. It's shameless plug I know, but he's a nice fellow with integrity who will go the extra-mile to make sure his clients get the best value for their dollar.

Here are the pictures of the double hook-up Salmon that we caught. Yumyum!!

http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshots/MomentOfFame/l78194.jpg

My Salmon became very restless and anxious in the next photo. He put up a good shake.

http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshots/MomentOfFame/l78195.jpg

We trolled the rest of the day until 3:30 without catching or hooking another Salmon. We talked to the vessels "Bait Some", "Blue Duck" and "Grey Light" while we were out trolling. We spoke to Stuart on the "Greylight" and he caught a nice 19 pounder around 1pm off of Goleta Pier in 200ft of water at 90 ft down on a salmon rotary killer. Good going Stuart. I also heard Cpt. Dave Bacon on the "Wavewalker" talking about a big fish that he caught off Mora Mesa in 175ft of water at 150 ft down.

Had a great time on the water even though we didn't get limits. Can't wait to give it another try in the near future. I sure hope more fish move into the area before the water gets too warm. Tight Lines!!
