Hey Bill, Big ol' lump to 13ft on friday and not spaced out very well either. Dooable unless that 20kts they are calling for starts early. I have to leave town so going to miss that one last run ... or I would be there. Good Luck and look forward to seeing you around again next season. Dustin |

Anyone think there's a chance for Friday (last opportunity for RC for a loooong time)? I'm of the opinion that even if the weather and water conditions are ok, there's going to be a problem with runoff. Maybe deeper water? |

Does anyone have any info on the Patriot tournament held today. Who won? Weight totals? Payouts? I fished the Virgs tournaments in the 90's and they were a blast. Keep me informed. Thanks. |

Went out of Morro yesterday with two other boaters - all headed up to Cambria. Weather was great - fished most of the day in just a T-shirt. No shortage of fish - as usual the blues were out in full force - probably threw back at least 60 - 100 between my friend Rob and I. Caught and released around twenty lings - two over 30" and four over 24". Kept a limit of reds and "Johnies". Trip back in was at 32mph, so you know how nice the water was! Hope to get in one more trip before the end of the year, not sure it could get any better than this one - ah yes, central coast fishing on Christmas eve. Merry Christmas to all! |

Went out Wed. and I think only 3 boats were out fishing. Headed down to Pt. Buchon and was in the same area as the Minnow. Hadn't fished there in a while. Four of us caught some nice reds with the ever common blues and other rockfish. Had dolphins play in front of the boat heading out of the bay and then had 3 whales surface about 50' away from our boat while on a drift. Talk about a rush hearing those big animals breathing next to you. We had a great day in the sun and we got to go fishing. |

We may be on the water in the morning for a bit before pulling out to do the christmas eve thing. If anyone is out tomorrow give us a yell, we will be on 68 and dragging the bottom for the last of the reds before closure. Dustin |

Me and a buddy went out of Morro Bay for Rockfish this week. Fished by the Ab Farm, Pt. Estero area tues. in windy/small craft like conditions, but fishable. Caught a mixed bag, including a limit of Reds, and a 40lb Angel Shark (released). Fished Calm seas weds. by Pt. Buchon and Diablo area for a limit of Reds and assorted rockfish. Both days produced several Lings between 22" and 29". Nice to be on the water before the closures. |

Well it's official. The 2005 Bottom Fishing Regs have been posted. Only 10 more fishing days left for Rock Fish. Next day is May 1st. 120ft to 240ft of water. Guess they don't want us around the rocks to much. Isn't it all mud at 240 around here? Here's the link: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/bfregs2005.html |

Took kids out of MB on Saturday at about noon, ran all the way up off of San Simeon for rockfish. Tried numerous drops all the way back down to Point Estero, finally ended up keeping a few blues just to have enough for dinner. Beautiful day on the water, but pretty slow. Anyone have any general areas to share that might produce a little better on the next trip? Thanks, Pete 528-4270 |

We fished the warm blue water from 15 to 20 mi out of MB today for tuna for nothing. There was sea life everywhere, but lots of sealions were under the birds so it was tough to live bait fish. Water was flat and 58.5 degrees. We got the last live bait of the season so I guess the fat lady has sung. On Thursday a commercial caught a few albacore in his gil nets off of Arguello Canyon. We tried for rockfish on the way in but there were no quality fish, only blues. Bob |

I am planning on rock cod fishing this Monday. The weather still looks pretty good then. Depends if the storm speeds up. If anyone does anything on tuna we'll head out for them. Only a few more weeks before it closes. I've looked at the DFG site and I haven't found how long the closure is going to be from the first of the year. Anyone else with that info? |

It may be worth one last attempt for albacore on Sunday as the weather looks perfect. The water out about 25 mi on a 230 from Morro is 58 degrees. There is a somewhat high chlorophyll content out there but no worse than where we've caught fish this year. Bait is still available. Post if you plan on running. Bob |

For those of you that care, the Diablo buoy washed up in Cayucos on Saturday. They retrieved it with the help of State Parks. Hopefully they will get it up and running again soon. No word on the final fate of the Point San Luis buoy yet. A lot of letters of support went out for it, from the Mayor of Morro Bay to the Harbor Masters of ports up and down the state. Keep your fingers crossed and letters flowing. Eric Endersby Chief Harbor Patrol Officer MB Harbor Patrol |

For those interested: The new Sport Fishing License Fees have been posted. It looks like we'll be paying $33.35, up from $32.80 in 04'. For fishing below Pt Arguello the "Ocean Enhancement" stamp remains @ $3.70. For a list of all the fees, go to: http.//www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/permits.html Haven't seen anything yet on the 05' regs. |

We passed on the tuna fishing due to 17 knt winds at the buoy so we caught some reds at Buchon and a lot of lingcod. Matt still has bait for the tuna fishermen. Terrafin shows a cold plum of 52 degree water entered the area for about 30 mi out. Beyond that its 56-57; still warm enough for albies and blufin. CCFCC will try to do a dinner at the Avila Yacht Club this Feb. I hope every body can make it. There are a lot of issues to discuss including the Diablo settelment where the water quality board is trying to set up a no fishing preserve from Arguello to Piedras Blancas and the new MLPA. hey social (so-cal) idiot, Big Bait=Big Ling. There out of season now. I generally fish with plastic (unless blown off from albacore fishing where i have live bait). My biggest lings have generally have been hitch-hikers or larger lings following up other lings that I have brought aboard. This upcoming year we will be faced with fishing in deeper waters (120-240). Beyond 80-90 feet color is no longer an issue due to light properties at depth, Purple being the most lasting color. with this said, use a 4oz lead head with a large white scampi tail. If you would like, shoot me an email and I'll give you alternate methods. Mike, I've been a lifelong Republican but the chances of Arnold "squelching" purchases is unlikely. Look at who bought the F&G boats 5 years ago. Recent SST's still show 59-ish water backed by upcoming good weather could yield results out near the Donut and beyond (1908 or 948). Maybe even closer. Also, very recent rpts of 60 to 100-lb bft can't be ignored. |

Mark: normally that kind of thing goes on the auction block, and sold to the highest bidder, dont know what the process will be for the bluefin. Its a nice boat and seems to have had the best of care, Stacey may know where the auction site is on the internet , and you never know the new GOV may squelch the new boats, talk to the guys that run the boat they will tell you whats up with it , the LT is aboard most of the time , stop by and talk to him. Gotta have a big gas card to fill that puppy. Blackie/SR |

Eric: I hear ya! Yes, the local Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB ... a bunch of idiots who know nothing about fishing) have jumped into bed with an environmental group (Resources Legacy Foundation) and have decided that the best use of your PG&E remediation money is to set up no-fish reserves along the central coast. Problem is ... they had already been told point blank by the CA Dept of Fish & Game that this was not going to happen. They were told to look for some other use of the money. There is existing legislation (1998 MLPA legislation) that is looking at MPAs up and down the coast. The local RWQCB disregarded the admonition from CDFG and went ahead with plans to seek marine preserves. Our group, the CCFCC, alerted CDFG about the outrageous behavior by the local RWQCB and got an e-mail letter from Fish & Game telling the RWQCB that these reserves are not going forward and they will not enforce these reserves. That e-mail was presented at an open meeting of the RWQCB by our representative (Bob Hather) and the RWQCB panel reluctantly put the issue on the back burner for "further study". We are watching the process, but the staffers at RWQCB and the Resources Legacy Foundation are still pushing their evil scheme. We will stay on top of the situation. I agree, Eric ... PG&E does not deserve the bad rap you have received from some writers below on the fishing issue. Melvin de la Motte President of Central Coast Fisheries Conservation Coalition (CCFCC) |

John: First, Diablo Canyon PP and PG&E had nothing to do with the security zone around the plant that we can no longer go into. Thank the Federal government "bastards" for that. Here's a little productive tip for all your energy: PG&E has been made to pay $14 million in mitigation money for the fish that they suck up. The central coast Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) is in the process right now of figuring how to best spend that money to "offset" the fish loss. To date, RWQCB staffers have come to the conclusion that setting up marine protected areas, "reserves," is the best mitigation plan. This would be in the form of funding the newly revitalized Marine Life Protection Act with the $14 million. RWQCB is in the public input process RIGHT NOW on this matter. Instead of raging against the machine, write a letter, or better yet, show up at a RWQCB meeting like I did (on behalf of RFA) and have a say at what you think of that plan. Then give them some better ideas of how to spend that money, such as artificial reefs, hatchery programs, cleaning up the water, etc, but not to keep fishermen from fishing. That will do alot more good for your fishing opportunities that holding the buoy hostage. Eric Endersby |

Speaking of buoys, the Diablo Canyon waverider buoy broke loose this morning and drifted off to the northwest with the southerly wind. They have a spare that they will deploy, and will hopefully be going out ASAP to recover the wayward one. If you guys out there see it, try to recover it if you can. It's probably pretty heavy, so if you can't safely get it aboard, note the latitiude, longitude, wind direction and speed and report it to either us at the MB Harbor Patrol, or the Coast Guard. Diablo would love to get it back, and we need the buoy info, as it is one more link in the swell forecasting/reporting chain. I believe that the buoy is yellow, round, about 2 feet in diameter, with a little antennna on the top. Thanks. Eric Endersby Chief Harbor Patrol Officer MB Harbor Patrol |

We fished off vandenberg that day but personally I like the cambria area better. Gonna jump on that fast boat the fiesta Friday for some more action. Good luck . Blackie/Sr KILLER Bs

What you dont know BILL SMITH is that boat the BLUEFIN is going to be sold and they already have NEW boats being built so they can enforce there bullshit regulations for the four or five months that we can fish the ocean, and if you figure the weather in the mix how much of that time CAN we really fish, Hope the bouy information bites them in the to. If our new GOV wants to save some money get rid of all the dead wood in that department if we cant fish than we dont need policing. Go get them while you can its going to be a long four months Blackie Sr |

Every time I leave Morro Bay and see that $1 million+ DFG boat tied up at the Coast Guard dock, I think of how my taxpayer $ are sitting there, wasting away, while beneficial aspects of gov., such as the Pt. San Luis buoy, disappear. Who authorized the purchase of this boat by a state that has a deficit in the $billions, a boat presumably to enforce the ever more nonsensical fishing regulations, a boat bigger than the Coast Guard's 47321, a boat built out of state, and a boat presumably too expensive to operate with 600 HP engines. How is it that every decision that DFG makes seems to be posterior backwards? What was wrong with the previous small boat they used? Seems to me that's what they still use but now carry around the small boat on the big boat. A fairly expensive dry dock I'd say. How many bouys could be operated with $1 million; bouys that make fishing and boating safer. The fact that the bouy system and DFG are different agencies notwithstanding, it's mismanagement of taxpayer $. |

Well, one of the friends went out Friday to find the fish and hit that terrible water and got beat up. We went by the harbor patrol in Morro Friday afternoon and the guys there were very helpful. Virge's was also a big help in deciding on whether or not to try outside. So, we decided to go up the coast after some rockcod. We bought some great bait from Matt. Everyone caught some big fish. I even caught a 13lb. sheepshead on a lead head jig. Didn't know we had them up here. Also caught some nice ocean whitefish. Biggest red was about 9 lbs. We listened carefully to the guys fishing and didn't hear about any tuna being caught. A little offshore wind going up and southernly coming back but very manigible. Winds never got over 10kts and we had a great day. The Little Tuna fought something real big for a while before it broke off. It sure was nice to see the sun and catch some great fish. There were 3 or 4 other boats up there as well. When coming in we noticed all the festive boats for the Christmas Parade on water and had a few launch while cleaning fish. We were glad to be in early. We'll try and go a few more times before the season ends. Hope to see you out there. |

Wanted to fish for halibut yesterday out of PSL, but Deke didn't have bait and we tried in vain for an hour to make bait. We did cast lures over fishy sand flats for about an hour for nada. Decided to fish for rockfish the rest of the day off of Pecho Rock. Caught a bunch of small rockfish, a few nice 2-3 pound blues and olives, 4 nice cabezons, and about 15 20-28" lingcod. Absolutely perfect day on the water. Glassy until 2 p.m. Fished in shorts and T-shirt most of the day. Spent 10 days in Bay of LA over thanksgiving. The weather was nice and the yellowtail were biting well. Here's a pic of a nice one we caught on live makerel. lat, steve (Avocation) |

Here is a version of my letter to NOAA and Rep Bill Thomas. I encourage all of you to take a few minutes and do the same. Dear Mr. Henderson For five years boaters of all types from the two Central Coast ports, Morro Bay and Port San Luis have relied on the valuable current weather observations provided by the Port San Luis Weather Buoy. Data from other buoys is not representative of sea conditions off our ports. This week five boats left Morro Bay searching for albacore of which I operated one and nearly didn't make it back to port because of the high wind gusts encountered off shore. The Cape San Martin buoy 60 mi to the north and the Santa Maria buoy 40 mi to the south both indicated winds at 4 knots. However, we found ourselves in 40 knot east winds. The recently dismantled Port San Luis buoy would have warned us to the dangers we encountered and deterred us from entering the unsafe sea conditions. On behalf of all the boaters on the Central Coast, I ask that your agency please reactivate the Port San Luis Buoy. This decision could result in a matter of live or death. Iwould not go out with swell building to 11 feet outside. It is tough to say the least according to CDIP charts. I love the central coast tuna fishing, but thats nuts. My prayers are with Steve or John if they went. |

Looks easy to read and understand as a forecast tool. WE use it or a similar site before we go to the channel islands for both wind and wave data. No real time or historical info though. I have found the UCAR data to be the best forecasting site but nobody called yesterday's "event" ! |

I was in contact with one of the boats out there early yesterday and watching the all the weather sites most of the day. The satellite wind map did show strong winds off shore but not in the area where the boats were fishing. This site can be a usefull tool but has it's limitations. Here is the description of the data: Satellites can determine the winds over the surface of the ocean to a degree of accuracy rivaling moored buoy measurements. Because the satellite used crosses the poles as it orbits the earth, it passes over the same location only twice a day. Therefore, no more than two wind estimates each day are possible for any specific location. To find the time of each image, look at the bottom of the map, and you will see one or more times in GMT (or UTC). These times are when the satellite crossed the lowest latitude on your map for that pass. All winds shown on the map are within two hours of that time. Note that there are breaks between the passes, so the coverage is not continuous in either space of time. Our web site knows about when the satellite passes overhead, so we try to pick the most recent map of surface winds for your area If you look at this site this morning you will see that all the strong winds are gone off shore, in our area, and the buoys are down. It is probably much better out there this morning than yesterday. Tonight/tomorrow will be another story.

SORRY; To bad the weather was so bad, was looking to the fleet that fished today for a big fish report. We decided to leave it to to the Experts my good buddy Tom and I jumped aboard the Fiesta with John as our skipper, and eleven other hardy souls, what a day , John took us down South and we had a super day , the water was FLAT all day and the fishing was great. Cambria fishing club President caught a monster Ling, of course it went back ,Was a great day on the ocean, Thanks John and Calvin, Oh yea Tom won the jackpot. Good luck tomorrow to those who give it a try. Blackie/Sr |

Chris H: In your letter in support of the PSL buoy, use exactly your example of how it was out there today. Explain exactly how the decision for a go/no go can be based on one buoy report alone, and how important it is for that buoy report to be pertinent, not 50 miles away! I almost took my buddy's 18-foot center console Scout this morning based on the CSM and SM buoys being what they were last night and this morning. I went surfing instead. Based on what you said and Bob experienced, it would have not been pretty had I gone fishing. The City of Morro Bay has drafted a letter in support of the PSL buoy which is going out next week, as has the Calif. Assoc. of Harbor Masters and Port Captains, and many of the port authorities up and down the coast. But a bunch of letters from guys like you are needed too, with first-hand accounts of the ramifications of a decision to go to sea with improper or incomplete weather information. Done by 9am due to major offshore wind event. Ugly! Yes, it blew very hard today and we all took a major pounding and salting. I also spun a prop. The remaining buoys were of no help or indication of the stiff wind event. On the flip side of coin, it was great working with all the boats today including Bob Hather on Windfall. Also, thanks Matt on the Billy Boy for the incredible bait! Not one dead bait in the tank even after the major pounding. Water was a cool 56.1 degrees. Nice working with everyone and thanks to my crew and the guys who left phone messages trying to make it happen for us. |

Planning on giving the albies a shot Saturday pending last minute weather. Anyone else heading out? I am thinking that offshore wind may have settled down around noon today based on the wind direction change at the bouys. Virg's has a boat scheduled to run per their recorded message. Bob |

Bob, Now you know first hand that I was not fooling when I said it was nasty out there. Even though the buoys all showed little wind. It did lay down down towards the end of the day though and that's when we found the fish. However-here is the exact reason that we really need to rally the troops here and let our Congresswoman and NOAA Reps know how important that San Louis weather buoy is. Cape San Martin and Sanat Maria showed calm winds. The PSL buoy would have told us how it really was out there. If there were people who just listened to the weather and the other buoys, they could have taken a small boat out there and may not have come back. Guys if you have not written about the buoy, do it now. It will just take a minute and could save your life (or someone else's) some day! If you do not want to write you own, cut and past one of the ones below. It takes less than a minute. Send it by e-mail or US mail to Louis Capps- http://www.house.gov/capps/ And the NOAA directors below. Your vote does count! Chris Surreel

The bouy's are still reading 5 to 7 knots as of 4:30 pm - Holy Molie!!! Glad you all pulled the plug! While they are dismanteling bouys, we need another one out further. Are there any other ways to determine what the outside is doing? |

Today there were five boats that ran out about 30 mi. The thing that was unbelieveable is that the buoys were reading 4 knotts of wind but on the outside it was rougher than hell. Mike Moore said that his wind gauge was reading 40 knotts. The wind chop was so bad that we all decided to quit at about 9:00 and for the first hour returning home we could only travel 5 knotts heading directly into the slop. We all took a major pounding on the long trip home. No fish were caught. The top of the water had cooled to 56. We worked a 5 mi radius around the #s Chris caught his fish yesterday. Bob |

Went out yesterday and finally found fish under birds at 25 miles on a 238 at the end of the day. Worked out to 45 miles but the fish were on the inside in the 57 degree, green water. Bob Hather on the Windfall and Mike Moore on the Legacy are out there today. I am sure they will post results later. Chris |

I don't know about Patriot Sportfishing being sold (I will let Steve Moore respond to that), but I do know that no sportfishing landing will be able to survive on the Central Coast when the idiots from Fish & Game and the Federal Government only allow us FIVE MONTHS ROCKFISHING in each of the next two years. We are having the best rockfishing in 25 years ... and these idiots are like ostriches that stick their heads in the sand and refuse to gather necessary fishery data to stop these repressive fishing regulations. However, Fish & Game will gladly take money from outside special interest groups to further limit fishing be creating no-fish zones up and down the coast!! Your governor said he was pro-fishing, but his conduct shows that he is listening to his wife whispering in his ear ... and she is feeding him the usual environmental crap ... that our oceans are in dire straits and there are no fish left out there. So ... if Patriot is being sold ... it is just part of the environmentalists long range plan to shut down all fishing along the Central Coast. Mel. |
