This past week aboard Kingfisher Charters included Hickory Shad and a whole slew of big Striped Bass that took them like candy. Thursday and Friday morning, Ed Cambell and wife Dawn as well as Rick Gavin and son came out from Long Island after seeing our TV show. They were both treated with great trips. After picking up some Hickory Shad both groups easily limited out in about an hour and a half with fish from 37” to 45”. Needless to say we will see them both again next year. Fri. afternoon George Chase and friends started off fluking with slow action but still managing 6 keepers; early evening switched over and got all the shad they needed to score 8 Stripers from 37” to 45” with a few blues mixed in.
Sat. morning Wilf Kalback and crew picked up shad and set a Kingfisher record with 8 large Bass on one drift. All fish were above 36” with two topping 40 pounds. The rest of the trip turned into a catch and release fun trip.
Sat. afternoon/evening brought John Medina down from an anniversary present from his wife (now that’s a good wife). The bright sun pushed the Hickory Shad down deep but John did a good job getting a few shad which resulted in two fat 38” bass. Switched over to trolling and caught about 15 bluefish on parachute jigs in The Race.
Finally, Sunday morning Sean McQuade’s group included a couple younger anglers (10 and 12) Richie and Stacy Cochran who tangled with the large bass around and held their own by landing fish in the 37”-40”, 30 lb. class. Sean landed the biggest of the day with a 44” 40 pound cow. All in all they brought 12 fish from 37” to 44” aboard with a couple hammer blues mixed in. The fishing was red hot on Stripers the whole weekend; fluke was very slow though for this time of year. Anyone interested in a trip should call us at 860-573-3614.

Fishing Report from Kingfisher Charters in Mystic, CT
This past weekend Bruce Lawrence brought out his wife and grandmother to catch a few sharks. We’ll Bruce did the catching while the women took the pictures. The weather was perfect for the seasoned shark fisherman but a little rough for the novice. We also had to contend with the armada of boats out fishing from the snug harbor shark tournament. With all that we still had about a 250lb. blue shark on in the first half an hour, another half an hour later we had a thresher take a bite out of two baits but decided to leave the hooked part. It was exciting to the group just to see that tail come out of the water as it dove down to the mackerel bait. One more blue shark for the group and they had enough. Trolled up some bass at the Montauk rips to finish up the day.
Sunday, Wade High and friends came out for stripers and fluke. Started out looking for Hickory Shad to live line to some big stripers but they were missing in action. The day before, you could see shad working over bait for acres. It won’t be long before they take up residence for the summer and become easy pickings for our Live Bait trips. With no shad we went to plan B and trolled parachutes around Fisher’s Island. Started picking up bluefish right away with the occasional 28” or so bass. After putting everyone on a couple fish apiece we decided to look for some bigger fish. Our next stop the fish were stacked up on the uptide side of a local hump. Again everyone enjoyed fighting a couple fish apiece but this time the fish ranged from 34” to a real nice 47” hog caught by Wade. They finished up with a few good sized keeper fluke and a mess of skates. Beautiful weather, great fishing, and I met a bunch of really nice people. It doesn’t get much better than that for me. The last two weeks of July historically have been our most productive trips fishing with Live Bait for big stripers. Our weekends are filled up but we still have a few weekday trips available if you would like to get in on the action. Give us a call at 860-573-3614 or check out our website at http://www.geocities.com/kaiser11/kingfishercharters.html

What an incredible weekend for the Kingfisher. The excitement started for our charters Thursday, and didn’t stop until Sunday. Thurs. I took out a group from Vermont, a late father’s day present. The two boys were great. Everything was exciting to them, especially their battles with stripers and blues. We tried for some live bait to drop down in the race for stripers but only caught blackfish instead of porgies, so we decided to troll instead. As soon as the first line went out, fish to 36” were taking our umbrella rigs steadily for the remainder of the trip. Friday, we ran a fluke trip with the Silvio group to the south side of Fisher’s Island. We set up by the eastern point in dense fog with a slow bite of skates. Picked up quick and ran to a couple more spots before camping out at one that bent three rods and a missed hit all within 20 yards. The rest of the day consisted of working back and forth over a 50 yard area and limiting out on fish from 20” to 27” with the latter weighing in at 8.75 lbs. Fri. night a group from Derby began by hammering fish on the troll during slack tide. One after the other for an hour and a half, the tide picked up and the bite slowed but we got one of our biggest stripers just before we left. A bonus 30 lb. fish at a hump outside the Thames on the way in put the tally at 10 stripers, from 30” to 45”, and a bunch of blues.
Capt. Mark on two trips saw the same action, slow but steady pick during the middle of the tide and hammering them during slack. Sunday, an afternoon trip saw a limit of stripers come aboard from 30” to 42” and a bunch of throwbacks. The Gerianos group needless to say was busy all day. Stripers and blues were caught on umbrella rigs with sassy shads and parachutes, fluke on bucktails tipped with squid and sand eels. All in all it was a stellar weekend aboard the Kingfisher. If you’re interested in getting in on some of the action give us a call at 860-573-3614.

Took the Kingfisher out last night on a scout trip for Hickory Shad. It wasn't long before we found a school working over bait. We grabbed about 10 and headed out to several local reefs towards Watch Hill. First couple reefs didn't look like they were holding any fish. Not much showing on the fishfinder so we move on. The third reef was the ticket as I pulled up fish were stacked up on the back side of the reef. The first two Shad went over board with double hook ups on identical 30 pound stripers. In 5 drifts we used up our shad on fish from 34" to 46". Needless to say after last evenings success we will soon be starting our Live Hickory Shad trips that run into Sept. If your interested in a live bait charter for big bass, give us a call at 860-573-3614.

We had Tommy T. and the boys out tues. night for some Misquamicut fluke. Drifted a few areas with not much to show but a few skates and a few stolen baits. We kept heading east trying to find where the fluke we more concentrated. Well, our efforts paid off as we found what fisherman like to refer to as the honey hole. In about 45 feet of water the fish were stacked up on and around a small reef in the middle of nowhere. As we passed by the reef dodging the pots the guys could barely get their baits down before they either had a fish or had a hit. Tommy even scored a double header on one pass. A 23" fish took the jig and a 19" fish took the teaser. All in all the guys had plenty of action and plenty of fresh fillets for the freezer. Richie even caught a 26" striper we thought was a monster fluke. Also, I marked loads of fish and bait on the fishfinder at watch hill point on the way out. If your interested in a trip on the Kingfisher in Mystic, feel free to email us at kingfishercharters@yahoo.com or give us a call at 860-573-3614.

Took out the boys from Nebraska this past Sun. morning on the Kingfisher. Coming from Nebraska fishing they were only used to Hybrid stripers so they were expecting grand things from our waters here in Eastern Long Island Sound. Trolling at The Race it wasn't long before they hit their first striper. A fat 36" linesider took our parachute jig and the boys got their first battle. Like clockwork they preceded to hit keepers until the tide became too strong to effectively troll. Decided to finish up tube and worming along the outside of Fisher's Island without much success. Some very big stripers patrol the outside of Fisher's and it shouldn't be long before that area heats up. Fluke have been showing up in much shallower water which demonstrates the fluke season is in full gear. We are running our combo trips now so if you want to get in on the fluke/striper action give us a call we still have a few weekend dates left.
P.S. We had a cancelation this coming weekend so call us at 860-573-3614 if you are looking to battle a few stripers with us down in Mystic.

Sunday we had a Montauk Fluke Trip for a Group of guys from Trumbull aboard the Kingfisher.

We Started out in the Race hoping to grab some Bass in the ealr A.M. Within 5 min. of getting the first line out we had a 40 inch bass in the boat. The next pass yielded a 43 inch 30 and change pound bass . We quickly got three more and the guys decided they had enough Striper meat and wanted some Fluke fillets.

We zoomed over to Montauk in some dense Fog. We started out in front of the Radar Tower with the fleet and picked up two fluke and a couple shorts and a whole bunch of skates. We pounded that area for a couple hours when Capt. Mark said guys , "it's just time to make a move." We headed a bit east closer to Montauk Point. Right away we started nailing them. Double headers were the norm and the group limited out in short order. We scored a fish that weighed in at 9.85lbs and was 29inches, another that was in the high 7 pound area and a bunch of 3 pounders.

What a great day. All and all the lesson was that the fluke migration is petering out, but there are still fish to be caught if you can locate the bait. Sometimes that takes getting away from the fleet.

We used Sandeels, Squid, and the two doormats came on Fluke bellies for bait. The Hot rigs were bullets Bucktails in 6 oz. tied to a Chartreuse dropper. We would start are drifts in nearly 70 feet of water and drift up to close to 35 feet.

For the Bass it was the old realiable parachutes with porkrinds down between 30 and 40 feet.

The Mcquaid group kicked off the season aboard the Kingfisher on sat. May 15th. With 49 degree water temps fishing turned out to be pretty slow. Last year on May 7th we hammered the stripers and this has been a warmer spring, go figure. With water temps 51 degrees today things should pick up dramatically in the next couple weeks. We did manage to pick up a couple fish. A fat 34" striper caught by Richy Rich trolling a sassy shad umbrella rig in the Race. Sean Mcquaid scored the other fish, a 22" fluke off Fishers Island. Signs Hickory Shad have began moving into the Mystic River this week. Things look good for our Livelining Hickories trips this year. Last year are top fish weighed in at 52 and 54 pounds. I wouldn't be surprised we top that this year with more and more bigger fish being caught every year. If your interested in a trip give us a call at 860-573-3614, we still have a few weekend dates left.

Took out the Collins family charter on the Kingfisher for Blackfish Sat. the 25th. Fished the west end of Fisher’s Island, caught the tide just right and limited out in 2 ½ hours with the biggest going 8 lbs. They were taking half a green crab and sandworm combo more readily than just the crab. We finished off the day jigging stripers and blues around the race. Landed two keeper stripers, and a bunch of hammer blues. The blackfishing this year has been phenomenal, probably won’t put the boat away until December.

This past weekend the Kingfisher (Mystic, Ct) entertained the Tuller group to a mixed bag of Stripers and fluke. All the stripers were caught on live Hickory Shad, with the biggest measuring out at 39 inches. The flukin’ is slowing down but you can keep busy on dogfish and skates with a keeper fluke here and there. Blackfishing has started to really heat up. Looks like it will be a very good season for blacks. Weather permitting, October should be a great month with stripers looking to fatten up for there migration and the excellent blackfishing this year. Get in on our striper/blackfish combo trips while you can.

The sun shined on Bobby, Jamie, and the rest of the guys all the way from Indiana this past Sunday aboard the Kingfisher. The race was hot early on around the slack tide. Trolling parachute jigs and sassy shad umbrella rigs took 12 stripers from 32” to 38”. As the tide picked up we drifted the middle race but the pick was slow. Still, we managed a keeper and a few shorts. Finished up, trolling another small reef on the way in to add a 25 pounder to the bag. The striper and blue fishing should only get better from here. We’ll be heading out to the Watch Hill Reefs this week to chase some birds and hook some fish up on the fly rod. We have a rare open date this coming weekend, if you would like to get in on the hot spring striper action check out our website at http://www.charterfishingconnecticut.com or give us a call at 860-573-3614.

The Kingfisher took out the Kijak group Sunday to Montauk for fluke. Conditions were really tough with the wind against the tide and 3 to 6 footers, but we still managed to pull in 12 keepers with the two biggest tipping the scales at 8+ pounds. If you’re fluking try bumping the motors against the wind to help give yourself a drift or pick up a drift sock. It makes a huge difference with wind against the tide conditions. We will be doing the rest of our fluking along the CT and RI shoreline. Look for them on the north and south side of Fisher’s Island as well as Misquamicut. Stonington up to Newport has had a big run of squid and the fluke are sure to be right on there tentacles. Let’s not forget about the stripers, they are there as well. From The Gut and Race to Montauk stripers have been moving in, in big schools, the key is to be there at the right time and day and you’ll be into them. This weeks, long’ awaited warm weather should turn things on even more. Look for more frequent blitzes showing up in the next week or so. This weekend the Kingfisher will be running full day striper trips with groups on sat., and sun. Look for next weeks report at www.charterfishingconnecticut.com.

The Kingfisher took out the Marchese charter Sunday for some Millstone schoolie striped bass action. Small sassy shad’s and fin-S-fish were the ticket. Everyone had a blast catching about 60 fish. This weekend look for fish from the Hudson to move into the Race and Plum Gut. Try umbrella rigs with sassy shad’s or parachute jigs for trolling and bucktails or small diamond jigs for drifting. Also, reports of fluke have shown up along the Montauk shores. We will be heading out there this weekend to get in on the action. Last year this time one of our charters scored big with 22 keepers with a 13 pounder mixed in.

Even though we are in the middle of this frigid winter it’s time to start thinking and planning for the hot fishing to come this year. We are already preparing for the upcoming season that starts May 10th for the Kingfisher. Once again we will be targeting the doormat fluke off Montauk and the early run of ravenous stripers arriving in May. Locally, fluke and bluefish will arrive in strong numbers in June, providing opportunities to compliment your striped bass catches. Offshore, sharks arrive in numbers in late June for those wishing to tangle with something really big! (Best shark for us last season was 350lbs.) July marks the arrival of our good friend the Hickory Shad. Following them are large numbers of big bass in shallow water that feed on the hickories (this can be truly amazing fishing). August and September includes consistent fishing for all the above species as well as porgies and the fist arriving bonito and false albacore (we tied the state record for false albacore last year-15 lbs.) Oct. and Nov. bring in the blackfish which was the best season in years last fall. Also, we are one of a small number of six pack charters that offer weekday night trips for stripers (if you have never tried one it is a truly unique experience). Look for us at the Springfield Sportsman Show Feb. 23rd, and appearing on the television show “Adventures in Fishing with Capt. Ray Kelly” in March. Trips are already starting to be booked so call early to reserve your prime fishing date.

Looking forward to seeing you again this year, Capt’s Mark and Scott

Subject: Fishing report- Western Long Island Sound

Things are beginning to break out all over in this part of the sound. Good to excellent fluke fishing can be found in several locals. One of the hottest at the moment is right outside of Port Jefferson harbor. It doesn't take an expert navigator to find the spot, just look for the fleet of drifting boats! The spot is doing best in and around the 25-30' mark. Once you get deeper, the bight seems to go off.

The smaller blues have shown up in mid sound. You can take them trolling the top if the water is calm or down around 20' if wire is on your reels.

Plenty of schoolies around the rocky spots, we havn't seen much over the 5 pound mark yet.

More to follow after this weekend's trips.

Subject: Coastal Connecticut fishing Report

As winter rears its ugly head, here in the Northeast, some fishermen are still getting out and taking fish at some of our local hydroelectric plants. In Connecticut and Long Island, we have a number of hydroelectric plants with warm water outflows. These outflows provide haven for Striped Bass that winter in our waters. Sinking lines, and chartreuse and white Cloussers seem to work best at low water. The CL&P plant in Norwalk, UI plant in Bridgeport, Millstone power plant in Niantic and Northport power plant on Long Island NY, will offer the bravest of fly fishermen the opportunity to take these fish throughout the winter. Fishing can be quite intense at times, with water temperatures as high as fifty-five to sixty degrees in and around these outflows. With winter water temps stabilizing in the low thirty’s, these warm waters make an excellent haven for fish that did not make the migration south to the Hudson or Chesapeake.
I would like to thank all my customers that fished with me this past year. The fishing was good and so were the conversations. Coastal Connecticut had an exceptional year for False Albacore; it started the first week of September and lasted until the second week of November. These fish showed up in large numbers throughout Long Island Sound and southern Rhode Island. The hottest fly in the box, was a white, lavender and blue Deceiver about two inches long, fished on a sinking line. My next fishing report will be in April 2001 Thanks for reading Coastal Connecticut fishing reports.
Good luck fishing

Coastal Connecticut fishing report
9/19/2000
Capt. Bob Turley North Coast Charters

The fishing in western Long Island Sound has been excellent, from the Norwalk Islands to Branford. Large schools of Bluefish, feeding on the surface, have provided fly fishermen with some pretty intense sight fishing. Southport Harbor, Black Rock Harbor, Penfield Reef, Long Beach, the mouth of the Housatonic River and the Milford coast line have all been producing fish at different times of the day and tide. Sunday morning the false Albacore and Spanish Mackerel made a spectacular appearance in the mouth of the Housatonic River and Short Beach.

Good luck fishing

Subject: For The Week Of July 10th

For the week of July 10th: fluke are everywhere, loads of shorts but if you keep at it there should be no problem making the limit on keepers. Long Sand Shoal is a good spot as well as most of the harbors. Bass are also numerous and being caught in the rips on jigs trolled on wire. Night fishing is great with live eels with many large fish being caught. The East Rip seems to be the favorite along with SouthWest Reef. Big blues are yet to show up but lots of “cocktail blues” on umbrellas trolled with mono or wire.

Subject: Report for the Week of July 3rd

For the week of July 3rd - Lots of stripers being caught on parachute jigs in the rips off Clinton. Both the East and West rips have been good at either incoming or outgoing. Long Sand Shoal around the “W” can has been producing decent fluke as well. Blues are few and far apart at this time but can only get better as the month progresses.
