Normally, the full moon time of the month is not exactly the best daytime fishing, but overall, the charters I have had this week have turned out pretty good, especially on the mid-day super high tides of 2ft or more. Starting off early, artificials like gold spoons and Mister Twister Exudes worked pretty good on some nice redfish, ranging from 15 to 24 inches. Snook were on the small side up to about 24 inches, but we couldn’t find any real concentration anywhere, that held anymore than a few fish at a time. This was in the afternoon, when the water was a lot higher.
Usually under these type of conditions, the fish will cruise around and through the mangrove roots, back into places that there would be no way you could get a bait to them, but by using live white bait, we were able to coax them into eating, but only if you would cast right to the mangroves or into the shadow line.
Redfish made up the bulk of the catch, along with a few snook. On Wednesday, Bob Barber of LongBoat Key and Chris Benton from Bartow managed snook, trout, and redfish. On Thursday, Fred Damianos from Bradenton and Bob Watson from New York caught mostly redfish up to 25 inches. On both days, we fished mangrove shorelines and oyster bars using Exudes and live white bait.
Water temperatures continue to warm up, but the bait is still spotty on the flats, except for the standard “bait spots”. Water clarity can also be a problem when trying to get a hook up. Crystal clear water may give the flats a Florida Keys look, but the “down side” can be that the fish are very wary of anything out of the ordinary, like the shadow of a bird flying over, a bait or lure landing to close or people making noise in the boat. All of these can sometimes chase a red or snook into the next county.
Redfish supposedly have bad eyesight, but in real clear water, they can be as spooky as a quiet bonefish. Under these type conditions, a stealthy approach and a long cast can improve your chances for success. A 7 or 7 ˝ ft medium action rod will allow you to make a nice long cast. I prefer a clear or green line and fluro-carbon leader line, when I’m fishing in clear water and as we warm up the water will take on a soupy, murkier look and things will get back to normal in the back country.
