FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 7, 2002

JUNIOR ANGLER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP UNDERWAY

The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) has announced the start of its new Junior Angler World Championship Tournament Series. Existing tournaments around the world have been selected as qualifying events, with the junior angler winners invited to compete in the IGFA championship in the summer of 2003 in the Florida Keys.

Currently there are 20 qualifying events in eight countries and territories and more will be added in the coming months. The first qualifying tournament to take place was the Torneo Tropic Star at Pinas Bay, Panama in December.

Mike Leech, president of IGFA, said the purpose of the Junior Angler World Championship is to get youngsters under 17 involved in fishing and keep them interested so they don't get distracted by less desirable activities. Fishing also promotes closer family relationships. The junior championship is the latest addition to the IGFA junior angler program that recognizes separate world records for boys and girls for 120 fresh and saltwater fish. IGFA has members of the Junior Angler Club in approximately 50 countries.

Tournament directors of junior tournaments or adult tournaments with junior divisions are encouraged to contact Chelsea Krezmien, Junior Angler Coordinator at (954) 924-4247 or ckrezmien@igfa.org for complete details on how to become a qualifying tournament for the junior championship. Parents who fish in tournaments with junior divisions should notify tournament officials of this exciting new opportunity.

Subject: IGFA Considers Rule Change

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

IGFA CONSIDERS RULE CHANGE

The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) has long been the accepted source of ethical fishing rules worldwide. They set the standard for which all world records must comply in order to be officially certified. This includes saltwater, freshwater, fly fishing and even junior angler world records. IGFA rules are also accepted for most saltwater fishing tournaments and many freshwater tournaments as well.

The trustees are now considering a change in IGFA rules that will effect fly fishing anglers who pursue big game fish. Currently IGFA rules do not prohibit the use of a fighting harness when fighting a fish on a fly rod. As anglers attempt to catch ever larger gamefish on fly such as marlin, sharks, tuna and tarpon, some anglers have used harnesses to ease the tension on their arms.

This practice has been called into question by some fly fishers who contend the use of a harness is not what fly fishing is about. They feel fly fishing is supposed to be difficult and the use of non traditional aids such as a harness should not be allowed.

IGFA is seeking the opinion of interested fly fishers as to whether fly rod harnesses should be allowed when attempting to catch a world record. Fly anglers should send their opinions by e-mail to IGFAHQ@AOL.com or write to IGFA at 300 Gulf Stream Way, Dania Beach, Florida 33004 (954) 927-2628 Fax (954) 924-4299 Website: www.igfa.org

Subject: Certified Captains Program

IGFA PROGRAM CERTIFIES CAPTAINS

The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) has announced a program to certify professional charter captains and guides who meet certain criteria. The program went into effect in April, and some well known captains have already been certified by IGFA.

Charter captains are part of the lifeblood of the recreational fishing industry, said Michael Levitt, Chairman of IGFA. We started this program as a benefit to captains who demonstrate a certain level of knowledge and professionalism.

Several of the benefits available to IGFA certified captains include the fact that they will be authorized to use the IGFA name and logo in conjunction with IGFA certified captain in promoting their business, listing on IGFAs website, and in the IGFA museum interactive display, referrals to IGFA member inquiries, discounts on ads in the World Record Game Fishes Book and IGFA merchandise, free IGFA membership to their best clients, quarterly updates from IGFA headquarters, e-mail news on hot items, official hat, decals and embroidered patches and more.

Mike Leech, president of IGFA, said The IGFA certified captains program will be a big benefit for our thousands of members in over 120 countries and territories. About 85% of our members travel to fish, and IGFA members will have access to knowledgeable captains at many of their fishing destinations.

In order to qualify as an IGFA certified captain, they must pass a written test, provide references, and pay a processing fee.

Some of the newest captains accepted by IGFA under their new program include Andrew Mezirow-Seward Alaska, Jose Campos-Puerto Rico, Michael Potts-Montauk, Long Island, Allen DeSilva-Bermuda, Ron Hamlin-Guatemala, Fran OBrien-Kona, HI, Kdu Magalhaes-Brazil, Michael Kirkpatrick-Jacksonville, FL, Mark Maher-Fremantle, Australia.

For information on how to apply to become a certified captain, contact IGFA at 300 Gulf Stream Way, Dania Beach, Florida 33004, phone 954/927-2628, fax 954/924-4299, e-mail IGFAHQ@aol.com.

IGFA is a 61 year-old nonprofit conservation and recordkeeping organization with representatives and members in about 125 countries and territories. The associations headquarters are in the 60,000 sq ft IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum in Dania Beach, Florida.
