We joined the quest yesterday and decided to take the northen western plum and see what was there. Dropped lines in at 35.0/ 121.43 trolled to 34.50/121.50, then across to 34.47/121.38 for nothing. The water was not even what i could call green, it was a clear grey. Usually means no life in it. We did not see any bait fish, we always see lots of bait everywhere. Did not see an once on the way out. Never saw a whale or dolphin. I think mother nature sounded the bell to head west for our long fin friends.I believe the fleet covered every corner of the warm water plum, not to say that their are no fish out there, but I think Huegh had the right idea. Nice batch of reds. Time to fish rock cod, now that we can for the next two months.Have fun at the PSL BBQ, can not be there, have to work on Saturday. Last note for every one that was on the water as the sunset yesterday. It was probably the most beautiful sunset and calm water on the ocean as i can remember, just spectacular. One shout out for the man upstairs on a fairwell salute for the Tuna season! |

Left MB on a 210 heading spun around the donut and came back. Smooth seas! The only jumpers we saw were schools of sea lions and small sun fish. Being on a fly bridge sure helped us identify what we saw jumping. Ed's "jumpers" and later "splashers" sure sounded better that what we got to see. I am still waiting to see these things jumping. Maybe next year. Put lines in at 9:00 and trolled until 5:30. What a way to spend a day. Amazing sun set. Thanks to captain and crew of "You Lie". |

We fished the north end of the warm water today 18 mi west of the Rock for zero. The sea life sure looked promising. 15 knott winds at 9am made us decide to troll back and fish for rock cod. Two of us caught about 15 lings; almost all were legal and the 4 we kept were in the 8 pound range. We fished in 70 feet of water. The other two tuna boats went almost 30 miles south to 61.5 degree water. No tuna were caught by 2 pm. |

I remember in the 90s that we would see cabezons, boccacios and lingcod babies all over the pier pilings in cayucos and avila. i would catch them often as I was catching shiner perch for bait. Does that still happen...I live south now and it doesn't here in SB PS After reading all these posts..some people need to stop being so tunnel visioned and accept the fact that everyone has different opinions, don't put people down for it, this is a forum not a DEBATE |

Dave, it is open season on Lingcod. Anyone can fish for them. The tourney will be the same as any other day out fishing except a few fisherman will congregate at one area and brag about the fish they caught. If you are not interested, dont come. If you want to release your fish, go for it. Go fish or Go home. Simple! |

just go by the f&g regs and quit trying to be a backyard biologist.two hooks and 6 hrs. on the water by next year there wont be any fish left! I cant wait to see what the off season brings to this board. this chat board is so out dated there needs to be more sub forums so people can read fish reports or poast crap like this in general chat. I think this forum came out in 1990 when all we had was AOL. moderator please update this board it can only help. Rant over goimg fishing. |

http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/fishwatch/species/lingcod.htm Read up. I always do what I can for a fishery, but only when there's necessity. The lingcod fishery will be fine after this one day of fishing. Sounds like somebody can't handle the facts. Personally I have filleted over 10 lings already the last few weeks, none of them were carrying eggs. Sounds like the odds are fine, just fine. Go buy a Prius..... |

and as for the party boats. i believe those captains know how to fish thier spots. not to pound a single spot, but to work the fields. i think they know that it IS possible to hurt an area. they also know that this is a business. they have a season to fish and they do it well. then the waters close for the fish can recoop after the season. i would only hope that they as well, want to keep the fishery strong for the next season and so on! |

I don't see the big deal on the lingcods they are everywere I've been catching them forever doesn't seem possible a day tournament is gonna mess up the lingcod population. David Hugh right now their migrating in not spawning. Also if its that big of a deal say something to the party boats! They do more damage than this one day tournament will plus u can bring it back live than let it go at the port it will find a new home. It's more for people who arnt going after halibut or is their a problem were r fishing them also. You to seem like party poopers Debbie downers. This one day contest will have no effect on the population. What we gonna catch every lingcod out there. Anglers anoyomous is gonna help the future for fishing I think this a great idea. Thanks peg leg for all the work u put into this. |

Mike you can use my my Avet HX Raptor it's loaded with 500 plus yards of 100 lb spectra on a Super Seeker 2x4. Very few Bluefin if any in CA waters big enough to give you a problem. I always hear the stories but you think someone somewhere in the state would have boated a decent size one in the last ten years. Ya here come the one that got away stories or the 200 lb jumper stories with no pic's. Yes I am a skeptic. I know a few guys up north that are specifically targeting Big Bluefin Tuna for the last few years with no luck. Don't get me wrong I would love to see someone get one over 100 lbs. I don't think were going to see it happen.I dream of owning a Nordhavn as well, I think the odds are about the same. Maybe better on the Nordhavn! LOL |

Hmmm, Thanks to my time on the water (and a little help from science) I would like to say that lingcods start spawning in December and usually end around April. Eggs are deposited on rocky areas in 30ft of water or less, most of us wont fish rockfish in that depth range anyways. Luckily the lingcod fishery is doing quit well, I mean our size limit when down, how often does that happen? Damn those tasty thriving bottom critters. Either way, you are entitled to your opinion David.... safe voyages and such. Save the seals! |

hey pegleg. don't have very many ideas to keep fish alive and then return them, especially at the end of the day, when usually, the winds come up! not sure who would go BACK out to release fish. hope there could be someone to do that. please understand, i love to fish, let alone just being on the water, but there has to be some sort of restraint coupled with respect for the health and survival of OUR fisheries. seems this thing is gonna happen. all those pregnant fish with babies are DONE! if you go back a little in history, we thought we could never hurt the herring population. we were wrong! fair winds and calm seas to everyone. |

David et al. Being the people pleaser that I am. I am willing to work with anyone who desires to have their live ling weighed in and then put it somewhere it may survive to live and breed. It is possible to put one in the bait tank, bring it in to our official scale to be weighed by our staff, take a photo and return it to live and breed again. Maybe you can help us figure out the best way to do this to insure the safe return of the fish. I do not have nearly the experience you do but have noticed these to be very hearty fish and have had them still alive even after driving home to AG and being on ice or in the bait tank. So, my little experience tells me there is a possibility this option could work. Let me know what you think? I knew we wouldn’t be able to please everyone when I endeavored to put on an event like this. |

just thought i had to put my 2 cents in. i have been fishing san simeon and port of san luis waters for 14 years now. caught lots fish. seen a few things on these great waters. i noticed there is to be a tournament on the 17th. i have to say this. most adult female lingcods and cabezons are SPAWNING. i know this because of my years on the water. do we really have to go after these fish in tournament style. can we hold the contest in a non-spawning time for the fish. we all know what i am saying. we are busy just trying to keep the waters open. but we also need to preserve our great fishery. we kill mama fish, especially with eggs, we hurt our fisheries. this is NOT an endless supply of fish. with respect to all and thanks for reading. |

Just an FYI, I was at the MB ramp and cleaning station today at 3pm and there were at least two Tuna carcasses in the nearly empty dumpster. I unfortunately did not pay close enough attention because I do not know if they were Albies or BFT. There was also an assortment of Reds and Lings. I will be fishing inshore from MB tomorrow on my skiff but will have a radio and listen in. Hope to hear some reels screaming!!! Good Luck guys!! |

Not looking good for a chloro shot today. I checked all the sensors that are available to the general public and didn't find any useable shot for our area. Terrafin might post one later. My WAG for tomorrow would be to go to 35:00 and 121;00 set the gear and troll slow (4kts) and deep with Rapalas. straight down the 121:00 line until you hit the cold -4 degree break. Then turn west and work both sides of the break around the 34:50 line. Traditionally this time of the season the fish are big, deep and scattered and will feed in the colder greener water. This should work for Bluefin also. |

Latest weather forecast is building High through tomorrow and then SE Winds later tomorrow night so lets go see if we can find some Tuna. Latest Terrafin and Tempbreak both show the warm water expanded. We are going to try the outside break down toward the Donut. Hope we have lots of company and lots of radio calls for "FISH ON"s. Being a near full moon, may be like last month-late day bite so we are not going to get into a hurry to get out there, maybe even try to get some squid on way out. Not out, Down. Gonna start at 120* heading and put them in the water at about 8 to 10 miles or when water gets to about 61 or 61.5. Hope the trash is gone. Sounds like no one went out today??????? |

It will give detailed forecast for location. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=35.05248370662468&lon=-12 1.9537353515625&site=lox&unit=0&lg=en&FcstType=marine |

Thanks Hugh, great info to educate us and good potential ideas for the next event. We hoped a halibut and even our old friend the TC's would win the second category. The non lingcod wording was chosen just in case no flatties or other sport fish species were caught a nice vermillion could have a chance. The kayak community is included in this event. Registration and weigh in positions have been filled. |

I don't ever want to be #5 on a 21' boat. Even 4 sounds crowded. Is it a cuddy or center console? I used to fish 3 guys on my 21' cuddy and that was enough for me. |

What's the thinking on the breaks at this point, fishing the inside breaks at 8 to 9 miles or the outside ones out and down toward the donut? Don't forget the moons gettin bigger too and may be a late day bite as it was 3 or 4 weeks ago---if there is one! |

Newsletter of Water4Fish.org November, 2011 The Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) Now Poses Great Danger to Fisheries A government Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) has recently given the San Joaquin Valley and Southern California water contractors near complete control of the BDCP process. Salmon and other fisheries are now at great risk unless the plan can be put back on track. The peripheral canal has been put on fast track and fishery concerns are being ignored. The action also excludes the fishery agencies from key decisions. We need to fight back with letters of protest. Please go to http://water4fish.org/write-letters-to-legislators/index.php/id/.215/ and use the model to write to Interior Secretary Salazar opposing the MOA. Send the letter as an email to BDO@usbr.gov. The salmon industry and the fisheries and environmental groups are all writing letters but individual letters can be a huge help. Salmon Industry Targets the BDCP Habitat Conservation Plan as “No Help” In testimony before the Assembly Water Parks and Wildlife Committee, the Golden Gate Salmon Association charged that the BDCP Habitat Conservation Plan will fail to rebuild the Central Valley salmon runs as required by law. The BDCP plan is restricted to eight habitat restoration projects that take place only in the Delta. The plan’s $3.7 billion cost is unfunded and most of the projects take forty years to complete. The salmon can’t wait that long. The plan also ignores the impact the peripheral canal project would have on upriver salmon losses. Approximately half of the salmon problems occur in the upper river as a result of the excessive pumping from the Delta and its impact on reservoir releases, temperatures and flows that destroy the upriver spawning and rearing habitat. You can read the GGSA testimony at http://water4fish.org/res/pdf/BDCP_Testimony.pdf Bureau of Reclamation Provides a Major Boost to Mokelumne River Salmon Production On October 4th 2011 history was made in the Delta and in the Mokelumne River. The Bureau of Reclamation closed the Delta cross channel gates for ten days starting the 4th. This allowed the adult salmon attempting to return to the Mokelumne to locate the river by smell. When the cross channel gates are open, the flow through the gates is so heavy that the salmon miss the smell and swim through the gates. They end up as strays in the Sacramento system. The result of the closure was dramatic. Return records were broken. The Mokelumne hatchery will run at capacity this year and there will be a huge natural spawn in the river. The result will be over 100,000 additional adults in the ocean when they mature in three years. You can read the report on the success of the closure at http://water4fish.org/res/pdf/Gates_Report.pdf . The photo on the left shows GGSA thanking Don Glaser and Dave Gore of the Bureau for their leadership. Thanks for your continuing support. 80,000 supporters have now signed our petitions demanding |

Chuck, Sorry to bail last minute on the buddy-boating but we took a few too many looks at the weather and decided against getting our butts kicked (especially with a 6 year old on board). Hope you get them, we'll be fishing halibut and rock-fish out of Morro Bay. Let us know how you do out there. |

We have been over this before and some of the landings have enacted a policy of releasing the large lingcod. A female LINGCOD 76 cm long and weighing 4.5 kg has about 60,000 eggs, and another that is 92 cm long and weighing 11.1 kg produces about 518,000 eggs. I was thinking we should put a target size to the ling cod for the tourney. closest to the target without going over wins. Also halibut may want to have its own side pot. if not i would be pretty sure that if a couple of boats targeted them ,a halibut would win the non ling cod division. making it a mute to fish rockcod. |
