Salmon conditions are looking better. There is lots of bait in front of the Rock where the Princes boated 5 today. Many of the sport boats had a fish aboard. Water temp 54, green water, lots of birds working the bait and a few whales and sealions. Bob |

Eric, Oh, that was you that suggested the thermal vent. Sorry Harrell, thought a read that in your thread. |

Eric, Didn't see any whales but I thought about that. I discounted the possibility of whales since the event was still occuring the next time we past over the area 20 minutes later. We stayed at least 150 feet south of the buoy to avoid snags on Souza. The charts show the rock north of the buoy if the charts are correct. I'm with Harrel, maybe some kind of thermal vent or something. Didn't think to take note of the sea temp over the spot. That would have been interesting. |

Put in six hours of trolling today for salmon out of Morro Bay for nada. Only fish we heard of was caught on the Princess (an 8 pounder). Oh well, there's always tomorrow. |

Gary: The most likely culprit for your bubbles were humpback whales. A little early for them here, but maybe with the warmer than usual water offshore they are here early. Last year I experienced the exact same thing out of Morro Bay. Couldn't for the life of me figure it out until later I saw the whales. Although I never saw them in the exact same spot as the bubbles, short of some Morro Bay Triangle or an sea bottom thermal vent, it is the only logical answer. Humpies have been well documented to "herd" baitfish by circling them with a curtain of bubbles, then coming up in the center and scarfing down. They usually break the surface when doing this, but not always. Did you see any whales in the area? Eric Endersby Morro Bay Harbor Patrol |

Anyone know what was happening opening day, just S/E of the red and green gong, straight out from PSL? Scared the heck out of me. Depth sounder telling me I'm in 114 feet of water and then all of a sudden within 60 seconds on the troll the screen fills with what looks like bait, from the surface all the way to the bottom and it's saying I'm in 5 feet of water! Look into the water and see millions of little bubbles. Ran over the spot again a little later and got the same thing. What's up with that? |

Purdy slow down in Ventura as well however a 22 pounder was caught, pic on allcoast under Valkyre post. Did not fish myself, waiting on more favorable tides and less boats this week. Seems the whole coast was slow-must be the tides thing. |

So what do you guys think, were the salmon out there but just not biting??? The bait sure seemed to be balled up pretty good. Also, what's up with all the little fish? Is that standard opening day? Thanks Mel for working so hard for us...especially us small skiff owners. Thanks, steve |

What is an FBR? Flasher Bait Rig?? If so A color or style would help. Dodger or Flasher Red Green etc. What a great day you guys had. 6 any day is great but with a slow bite I'll say your FBR herring worked. I got two yesterday on a purple haze 44" leader behind a green hotspot. I have been doing better with hootches with a longer leader. The hotspot was the 11". Coach Mel, Thanks for your tireless work it will be rewarded.Coach John |

Fished PSL in the skiff today (Avocation had some troubles). Fished 2 miles in front of Light House in 130 feet of water. Lots of nice bait balls. Had 3 take downs and landed 1 22" salmon. Small, but it will eat better than bait. The bait was there, but the fish weren't??? Hope they show up. It seemed like folks started getting fish later in the morning, but then the wind started to blow. best fishes, steve |

Fished with Dave Hudgens on Pipedream today straight out of PSL in 145-160 ft for 6 salmon. 2-12# and 4 small fish. All fish came on FBR's with herring tray bait, mostly 75-90' down on the wire. 2 go home fish came on a quad with 2 other shorts as we were trolling through a nice haystack. We were done at 11:30. Good Luck Gary Foster |

Hey, those aren't Central Coast salmon are they????? Bob is right about a nice big salmon getting away. He jumped out of the water and rolled over ... and that old hook just slid out of his mouth. There is an empty feeling when that happens. Guess Mike Stanton and boys are doing better down by the equator. Mel |

Thanks for the report Bob. Was looking for some better news, but I have a feeling it will turn around. By the way, rumor of 70 Albacore caught within one day range of San Deigo yesterday. Still not confirmed, but if true .... that water out by the donut may be holding already! On that note, Thanks again Mel for your and Steve's hard work and getting us that shallow water to operate in. Was not looking forward to having to dedicate my mornings to Halibut before pushing off to fill the fish taco meat. Thanks again and hope to see you all at the CCFCC dinner in Morro. Dustin |

By 10:00am salmon reports were very slow. Mel said he had a 15-20 pounder within 15 feet of the boat and lost a second on that was decent. There are a number of shakers reported. Virg's has one and Patriot has only had one stripped bait at this time. One fish was caught in front of Pecho. Between about 50 boats out of Morro and 35 out of Avila have probably less than a dozen salmon total. Halfmoon Bay was also bad and boats returned early because of poor weather. I heard Monterey had some fish but was not hot like was hoped. Maybe it will pick up at the tide change due in an hour and a half. Bob Hather |

Friends: A few points: 1. Here is the update on rockfish in-season adjustments. They were talking about going back to the 2004 season ... which would mean no rockfishing in July. Steve Moore (Patriot Sportfishing) and I spent an entire week tag-teaming the guys at CDFG trying to get back July. They were threatening to take away July. You cannot believe how much time Steve and I spent whining and sniveling and complaining and cajoling. We finally got their attention ... So, here is the "unofficial" results. I have been told that I cannot say it is "official" until CDFG makes the public announcement. We will get fishing in May-September (including July) from 0-40 fathoms. You small skiff fishermen and kayakers better be hooting and hollering because we got you from zero to 20 fathoms back ... which you didn't have. Concerning October to December, CDFG has promised me that they will take a look at the total catch based on CRFS data to determine if they will give us additional fishing in Oct-Dec. We should know how the numbers are going sometime in August. If numbers are below quotas, then we might get additional fishing in Oct, Nov. or Dec. But for now ... we should be happy that we now have rockcod fishing from zero to 40 fathoms from May to Sept. You kayakers can go fishing again because of the efforts of the CCFCC. 2. TICKETS FOR CCFCC DINNER ARE NOW ON SALE. $40 per person. Steak Dinner. Morro Bay Community Center. 6 p.m. APRIL 16, 2005! Door Prize, auction, raffle items. Support the group that fights to support your fishing rights. Get tickets at Virg's, Four Season Outfitters, Patriot Sportfishing, or call the CCFCC office at 544-2424. 3. Salmon Fishing: I have had my hooks checked many times. If you have made a diligent effort to bend down the barb, they will not hassle you. If you have done a poor job on it, they may tell you to make a better effort to bend down the barb. However ... if you have been an _ _ _ hole to start with ... and you have given them grief ... then you can expect them to give you no slack. I have found these CDFG guys to be okay if you treat them with respect and deference. They are just tryng to do their job. If someone gets a ticket that you feel is completely unjustified ... give me a call and I might defend you pro bono (for free). However, I find that most people who get tickets ... deserve them. Good luck to everyone tomorrow... and remember to buy those CCFCC fundraier tickets for April 16, 2005 at Morro Bay Community Center. I'll be on Channel 68 tomorrow with call-name of "The Spirit". Mel. |

After you put your line out estimate the angle of the line. At 45 degrees the depth will be 70% of the length of the line ; 100 ft of line = 70ft deep. An angle less than 45 will be less depth and greater angle will be deeper. |

Question for you pros. This is my first year at trolling for ocean salmon. At 1 to 2 knots (gps)dragging 1-1/2 pound lead w/ 9" flasher on a sinker release. How much line do I pay out to get the bait down to about 35 to 40 feet? |

The F@G will run their finger over the barbs and if they feel any burrs they will get crazy and probably tell you to file them down. So if they break off then better get the file out and smooth them over real well. I always get boarded so I carry a file to appease any problems with the boys. Also make sure your license is filled out and signed as they gave me a ticket once for not having a signature |

Steve, I have heard of the cotton ball trick. They say if the DFG officer pulls out a cotton ball and you have the slightest burr left on the hook, your'e had. If you're using the hardened hooks where you can just squeeze the barb and it breaks off, they don't file very well. I have an old chainsaw sharpening tool that clips on to a 12v battery. It works great for grinding down the rough spot. Some guys are using the Dremmel tool. But I would make sure they're clean to stay out of trouble. Use the cotton ball yourself before you go out. |

Would someone who has the regs dialed in want to run through them. Hate to see someone get busted out there. For example, will they run cotton balls over your hooks to check for barbs? I pinch my barbs, but they usualy break on gammi's which leaves a 1 mm bur. Would I get busted? Looks like the weather will hold for saturday a.m. After that I'm not so sure. We'll be fishing out of PSL on the Avocation. As always, I'll share info if I've got it. thanks steve |

Harrell, those are great images. The water temp has changed for the better in the last couple of days. We now have some cold upwelling 51-54 degrees along our coast. The Terrafin image looks great for tuna now as well. There is a good break about 15 mi out and the donut is 60 degrees. If there are no salmon we can fish for albacore. Bait is sparse in front of the Rock. I saw no sealions and very few birds over the weekend when the water temp was 56. The water is fairly clear. Avila may have a few more bait balls. The dredger was working today so there may be no problem returning at low tide. Check with Del at 595-7214. Monterey has had numerous reports of salmon. Weather is improving for the opener. Bob |

Here is a tide graph for the salmon opening weekend. The pink highlites are times above 2 ft which is what I need at Avila. The steep outgoing slopes will be fast moving water at Morro Bay and the south dock is the best for launch and retrieve unless you have a real light trailer. I have seen them swept under the dock.

Some of us with smaller boats may need to hide in the harbor on anchor if the wind is up around noon. Don't think the launch can get us out of the water mid-day due to a minus tide. Hope it lays down enough at least until we can get our limits. Sounds like there's going to be plenty of fish. 04/02/2005 Sat 03:08AM LST 4.9 H 11:17AM LST -0.6 L 06:47PM LST 3.6 H 10:44PM LST 2.9 L |

I have an Avet Pro-EXW 4/02 Silver reel for sale. This reel is only 1 year old and is spooled with Spectra 60# with a topshot of 60# Blue Izorline. The two speed gear ratios are 4.0/2.0. It is being serviced in L.A. as we speak, so when you get the reel, it will be boat ready. I have the box and am ready to sell for any reasonable offer. I bought the reel new, but don't use it. This reel has only fished one day in it's life. So make me an offer. |

Rob, I don't have a JX. I have an SX, MX, LX and an EX but not a JX so I can speak from experiance on the particular model. As for the rest of the reels and the company, I have been very happy with all of the reels. I think I like them better than the Accurates I have which are twice the price. The SX I had was the first run and didn't have sealed bearings which caused me some trouble after about a year. They replaced all the bearings, free of charge. Hope this helps with your decision. Only a few more days till salmon season, see ya on the water. |

A incourageing article. Hopefully this means that there are salmon holding around Morro/Avila. The coming salmon season has a chance to be the greatest in a generation for the Bay Area coast. The same is true right now for striped bass in San Pablo Bay -- the best fishing in 25 years. While environmental news is dominated by doomsday stories, those in the field and on the water can see the best of times on the bay and ocean for striped bass and salmon. It started two weeks ago when striped bass roared by the thousands into San Pablo Bay. "It's astronomical," said Keith Fraser of Loch Lomond Live Bait in San Rafael. "One guy comes in and says, 'I had 35.' The next boat comes in and they say, 'We had 47.' We're seeing people catch and release 20 to 50 bass in a few hours." Field scout Sushi Bob, for instance, said he caught and released 67 striped bass in four hours. These are not the big adults, now staging in the Delta to spawn in April, but hordes of what are called "schoolies." Most are 3 to 7 pounds, with about 1 out of 10 ranging 10 to 13 pounds. Like all bay fish, striped bass bite according to tides. Next Saturday (at the Golden Gate), a low tide of 0.7 feet at 5:34 a.m. is followed by a high tide of 5 feet at noon, and then a low tide of 1.1 feet at 5:30 p.m. Add about 90 minutes for San Pablo Bay. This is how to fish these tides: At first light, head to northwestern San Pablo Bay, roughly from China Camp to the pumphouse to catch the big incoming tide. Anchor and use ghost shrimp and grass shrimp for bait. At 11 a.m., pull anchor and head to the Marin shoreline to catch the top of tide and the first two hours of the outgoing tide. Troll the San Rafael shoreline, Red Rock, Marin Islands or San Quentin, using half-ounce Worm-Tail jigs (chartreuse is the top color this year). Have you ever caught 10 striped bass in a few hours? How about 15, 20 or 50? You now have the chance. Here come the salmon Meanwhile, the salmon season opens April 2 for the Golden Gate Fleet, as well as for anglers out of Monterey, Half Moon Bay and Bodega Bay. What they will find, according to state and federal scientists, is that the ocean is full of fish. Each year, scientists project the number of adult salmon in the area, with the typical forecast about 600,000 to 700,000 salmon. These annual estimates are conservative, and in 13 of the past 20 years, the actual numbers, and the quality of fishing, was better than projected. The lowest forecast for salmon was 452,000 fish in 1992. The highest was just over 1 million in 1998. Last year, a good year for Golden Gate Fleet, scientists projected 831, 000 salmon, and the actual numbers came in at 871,000. So get this: Scientists are predicting 1.67 million adult salmon on the Bay Area coast this year, a mind-blower. That's right, more than double the number of salmon from last year's forecast, and nearly triple the number of fish seen in a typical year. The time is now to book your first trip of the season, spool up new line on the reel, and start dreaming of heading out the Golden Gate at dawn for your first hook-up of the year. Double opener: A twist this year is that Monterey Bay will open for salmon on the same day as the Golden Gate Fleet. In the past, Monterey opened two weeks early, and you could often get a jump on what to expect. No more. The salmon season will likely open on the first Saturday of April from now on. Baitfish are in: Capt. Mike Gaddis, who has been running trips for giant squid on the Superfish out of Emeryville, said he stopped near the Farallon Islands last weekend to scan for baitfish activity. "There was a lot of bait offshore and clouds of bait marking (on the fishfinder) near the Farallones," Gaddis said. "Life, everywhere." Backdrop of El Niņo: One side story is how this winter's mild El Niņo event will affect the summer fishery. The consensus is "not much." Craig Stone at Emeryville Sportfishing Center, responded: "We've had a lot of southerly driven rain with south winds, so it's not unusual to have somewhat warm water out there this time of year. That is typically turned around by some howlers out of the northwest, cold air and strong winds right out of the Arctic. It's 56 degrees out there now. We could get a big blow out of the north and drop it down to 51, 52 degrees." The spring northers: Wind out of the north in the spring also set off upwelling, which brings cold, nutrient-rich waters to the surface and also starts the marine food chain. Overlooked: Amid the excitement over striped bass and salmon, sturgeon in the Lower Delta and San Pablo Bay are off the radar. A big snowpack in the Sierra and the resulting meltoff will increase freshwater flows into the Delta into June, so the peak sturgeon season this year will likely be in April and May. Bay baitfish: While the commercial herring season was bad in the S.F. Bay this past winter, the problem was not the number of fish. Actually, the word on the docks is that herring were plentiful, but they were too small, below the mesh size required by the commercial netters. Meanwhile, anchovies are expected to make their annual entry into the bay in mid-April and, in turn, attract halibut in from the ocean. Mailbag: I received a lot of mail over my column last week, which was originally titled, "A Teenager's Lesson," which described how through sports, coaches, mentors and the great outdoors, kids can learn that success comes from within and from their own efforts. OK, fine, right? Nice little feel-good story. Well, apparently not so fine. A number of teachers sent me angry notes, several expressing outrage, feeling they had been personally criticized, that I was a teacher basher, etc. for not crediting them with teaching success. Actually, I support teachers, my wife has teaching credentials, and I believe that teachers face a difficult challenge, have a critical impact on youth, and yet with unfair compensation.. The TV show, "Great Outdoors With Tom Stienstra," airs at 6:30 p.m. Sunday on KBHK-44 and Bay Area Cable 12. E-mail Tom Stienstra at tstienstra@sfchronicle.com. Page F - 7

Hey Bodean, this is my first season to fish for Salmon. You mentioned getting bait from Deke. Can you be a little more specific. I'm new to saltwater fishing and I don't know anyone yet. How do I go about getting the bait. I just bought a 7ft casting net with 1/2" mesh. Never thrown one before. Thought it would be safer to buy bait first time out. |

Friends: During these slow days, you might want to follow another fishing trip on-line. Mike Stanton, owner of Gus's Grocery in San Luis Obispo and local fisherman ... and member of Board of Directors of CCFCC is on a 21 day long-range on Royal Polaris out of San Diego. He left a week ago and they are already into some big tuna. Go to RoyalPolaris.com Next go to "News/Schedule" and scroll down to "Current Conditions" Click here They have a little summary of each day. If you look at March 27 (Easter Day) and click on photo #3, you will see Mike with a big tuna ... Mel. |

I was on a harbor cruise in Morro this weekend and the coasties boarded us for a safety check. All went well, however there were a few items they could have ding us on. Our flares were 8 months old, coasties require flares to be within 6 months. We did not have a "do not dump oil" placard, the coasties provided us with one. After the recent incident in Morro you can bet the coasties will be out in full force. Be Safe. Carl |

O. K. lets start over. Other than the halibut draggers which can fish inside of 900' but must stay out at least 3 miles, (altough they rarely fish outside of 200') all other forms of dragging must be done in depths over 900'. It is in the regs and it is very clear. Being that the halibut draggers are never in 500' of water and the rest of the draggers cannot fish inside of 900' I seriously do not believe this to be a valid report. Besides the fact that as the drag gear is on the bottom who is actually going to go out and catch those fish. And yes John, drag gear does occasionally catch a salmon |

too funny, i can't imagine one salmon getting caught in a drag net... let alone 7......about as much chance of that happening as there is anonymous posters giving up thier identification |
