Port St Joe Area still holding lots of bait and where you find the bait you can find a fish . Warren Bayou although catch and release is the rule for this steam plant canal is stacked up with fish. So if you head over that way remember catch and release. The oil docks is a good spot for trout with a white grub landing as many as you want to pull in. Most of the trout are small but you will have many keepers. Remember to file down that barb it makes release of small fish much easier and less stress on the fish. The Gulf County Canal continues to produce keeper fish. You can expect to catch enough to invite the in-laws over for supper. Your best bet for a sure catch is live shrimp , fished on the bottom with a large enough anchor to hold you down. Apalachicola trout , redfish and blackdrum can be caught along the rivers and bayous using live baits and grubs. With a strong sheepshead bite around the bridges with shrimp. St Marks river still holding redfish and sheepshead in fair numbers if you fish just past the steam plant. Off Shore for gag and flounder most anywhere in the area and you don’t have to travel far. Christmas is just around the corner, if you see Santa please tell him I need a good pair of fishing pliers ! Good luck and have a safe trip Captain Gary (Red) Goodrich |

Port St Joe area still has plenty of fish on the flats. Today we found good redfish and trout on the west side of the bay and large schools of jack in the 30 lbs range on the east flats near butlers. But the canal is the hot spot for trout , redfish and flounder. Jig heads tipped with shrimp are bringing lots of fish to the boat , but live mullet or bull minnows fished on the bottom are the ticket for a fish fry. Live shrimp is catching sheepshead and drum. Apalachicola area is holding tons of trout and good size fish too , fish close to the mouths of the creeks and bayous with live mullet or a pink and white grub . Lanark area has some good reds and trout with live and dead baits around docks , but a red and white grub will also bring them to the boat. Off Shore fishing is strong with a good grouper bite in and around 50 feet. Pinfish for the best bait . Lots of big trigger fish out there right now and they will take squid quick. Lots of mullet , and full of roe, if a belly needs to be filled you cant go wrong . We have seen tons of large schools from west pass to the cape and all the fish are those big ones. also the canal in gulf county is teaming with jumping and flipping mullet they were everywhere. Good luck and have a safe trip Captain Gary Goodrich Apalachicola/Port St Joe |

The St Joe area bite has picked up, with larger trout being taken off the grass flats on the west side of the bay. Spanish are moving around the oil docks in good size and numbers, so if its off the beach your looking for, then head to the oil docks. Tarpon can still be landed from the beach using a mullet free-lined off the oil docks. Flounder are coming out of the Gulf County Canal and you can catch them from the beach at the Tapper bridge using bull minnows and grubs. With fish on the move around the beach, it makes for good family fun and at the Tapper Bridge, there are restrooms on the west side. |

I didn’t expect to be catching the amount of fish we have this early in September , but I have never been one to complain . Fish on !! Wow I love those two words. Port St Joe area has been holding good numbers of Trout even if there not gators they do cook up just as fair. The Redfish are holding tight to the school and there are plenty to be found . From Crooked Island Sound to the head of St Joe Bay you are sure to find the Redfish in the slot and over. Off/Near shore we have had lots of fun . We have landed good kings, Spanish, small Triggers , Black snapper and a ton of Dolphin. Apalachicola area the Triple Tail are still there around structure and markers. We have landed many good ones with the largest ( my personal best ) coming in at 17 lbs. The Tarpon in west pass are still taking crabs and mullet although the hookups are getting fewer. The big Jacks are stacked up in the 40 foot holes . And you can expect them all over the 12 lbs range . Just fish a mullet on the bottom and hold on. Off/Near shore we have landed Black Snapper , Lady fish , Blue fish and the Spanish. Dog Island Reef area still holding Trout , but the Flounder have slowed. If your that way the Redfish and Black Snapper are stacked in the pass at the shrimp boat. You will catch the Ladyfish and Spanish along the beach most anywhere.. Well that’s the areas I have hit this past week . I hope everyone gets in on the good September fishing have a Safe trip and I wish you all the best of Luck. Fishing the St Joe Bay this time of year is not as exciting or productive as others ,but you can catch fish. With March here I can still find schools of Redfish although small they are still in the slot. The Trout are on the move as this week we have found small schools of 5 to 10 fish along the edges of what will be grass soon. The sheepshead are plenty. You will find the sheepshead in and on the grass , but if you go sand bottom 5’ to 8’ feet you will catch all you want. The flounder are moving in on a fair scale . You can also pick them up when the sheepshead bite slows on the deeper sand bottoms. The best bait this week has been a white and red grub with a long tail and fiddlers fish finder rigged. With March here its time to have all your ducks in a row. The fishing is really heating up. Go through all that gear and the boat ,make sure you are ready so when the time comes you just head out. Don’t forget the trailer ! I have had two blowouts this winter , both out of town ,both times I had to buy new spares . I hate changing a tire on the side of the road. Good Luck as always and Have A Safe Trip. |

Hi all Captain G here, and yes I know there is only so much you can report on the Gulf County Canal , but if you are wanting fish for the table then head on over and fish the canal. However be prepared for the amount of ladyfish that have moved in. If you fish a carolina rig the ladyfish will leave you alone, but a light wire jig fished with shrimp will bring them to the boat almost every cast. The Stripers , White bass , and Black Drum have slowed with the Sheepshead bite picking up. And if your lucky you will catch a new taramar rod with a new sprois4000 reel spoiled with 12 lbs power pro high vis yellow line lost over board . Lost by a customer that set the rod on the deck with the bait in the water while picture taking. Don’t forget No Trout February is here. The bay has let us fish a few good days. The Trout again closed for February are in the deep area channels or cuts and so are Slot Reds. The Lady Fish and the Red Fish are both hitting gold spoons pulled across the pot holes, or with live shrimp on a jig head pulled along the drop offs. Did find some good Redfish Action on the outside of the cape using a stretch 25 casting to a school on top. Good luck and have a safe trip Captain Goodrich A Bay Charter 1-850-Bay-Fish |

Port St Joe Area Report What nice weather the New Year has started with here in Port St Joe. Temps into the mid 70s , clear sky’s , and calm seas. I have fished hard all week, Meet some good fisher folks, and have seen many fathers and sons becoming better connected thru fishing. This past weeks fishing was special , I had 4 trips with fathers and sons. Special to me because it brings memories back of the many quality times that I have spent with my own two boys fishing. One Father and Son hadn’t spent much time together in a few years , Another Father and Son was just spending another day together fishing .The one Father and Son that made the most memories for me was a Father wanting to spend some Extra Special time with his Son that was leaving the next day to Iraq. Did we catch fish? Sure we did. We landed good Trout up to 24 inch’s, we tore up the Black Drum population , put a hurting on the Sheepshead , Gave many warnings to the Red Fish although one or two did make it into the box and didn’t mind the tug of war with the blue fish. I fished the St Joe Bay and the Gulf County Canal. We used dead or alive shrimp and tossed a few hard baits with the rattle trap landing the most from the array of artties we tossed. The dead shrimp was bait of choice with live coming in a close second place. We landed the better Trout From the bridge to the power lines and the better Drum closer to the Tee with all others landed equally thru out the canal. Have a wonderful year! Its getting towards the end of November and although the weather is turning cold the fish bite is heating up! We are catching good trout , redfish , black drum and sheepshead. This past week we landed a good amount of keeper trout and slot reds. We also put a hurting on the sheepshead population. We did catch a few black drum too. The black drum although not huge were in the 4 to 5 pound range and will make those lucky fisher folks a pot of chowder to warm them up on these cold days. The trout were landed on shrimp fished on the bottom, white curly tail grubs and root beer colored grubs with a red flake. We also trolled with both the white and root beer and did equally well. The sheepshead and blackdrum were landed using shrimp and minnows on the bottom. The red fish were landed along with the sheepshead and black drum. We fished inland creeks and bayous with water temps around 50 to 58 with the depths from 6 to 25 feet. Good luck folks and have a safe trip. Captain Gary Goodrich A Bay Charter |

Hi everyone Captain Goodrich here, Its into the second week of November and I’m still seeing the signs of “Red Tide” in St Joe bay. We are catching fish along the flats and deep holes (10‘) in and around Crooked Island sound. Also catching fish in and around the Appalach East bay area. Fished Cash Creek mouth and areas in and out of the bay. Most of the fish are legal , but small. Did catch a few 3 to 4 pounders in the trout. The reds were small , but mainly slot size. Also a few flounder. We are using white or green grubs , fished slow along the bottom and my all time gold spoons. We did Pensacola and the bull reds are thick .We landed fish in the high 30 inch size along with a good bunch of flounder. We fished cut bait for the reds and flounder drifting the Pensacola Pass. Good luck and have a safe trip. Captain Gary Goodrich A Bay Charter www.fishingportstjoe.com |

Here it is middle of October already, its the time of year many have been waiting for. The bigger redfish make their run along the outside with the bulls pushing the school. Fishing the passes with live bait , cut bait or a good artificial will do. Good live bait will be a large croaker or a 5 or 6 inch mullet .For cut bait go to mullet and for the artificials its good to keep something heavy for those long cast but be prepared for those toothy Spanish .For your shorter cast a good gold spoon . For trolling you just cant beat the stretch 25. Slot redfish can still be had on most any day on the flats here in Port St Joe bay , Crooked Island sound or the Apalachicola bay area inlet mouths. Use a good gold spoon or mullet for a sure hook up but other baits will also land you a good redfish. I know shrimp and lys are still putting them on the table. The trout bite is picking up for us and we are using top waters in red and white and grubs in green or white with a red tail, water around 3 foot deep to shallow cast to a foot. Although a lot of short trout will be caught in search of that biggen when supper time comes around it makes all that work worth while. Just be consistent and you will be rewarded with some nice trout on your table. Flounder are hitting good on a fish finder rigged bait. Use a smaller mullet 3 to 4 inch’s , lys , bull minnows or cut bait fished hard on the bottom. On your fish finder rig try shortening your leader to around 6 to 9 inch’s. It has been helping our hook ups on the last few trips. The big Spanish are along the beach , live bait works good but if you are willing to make a few cast use a heavy silver spoon, the heaviest you feel you can cast well .If your wanting a king use a mullet free lined , along the beach and with this north wind tie a balloon on your line it will get your bait out a little further and keep it out longer. Good luck fishing this month Captain Gary Goodrich A Bay Charter 1-850-bay-fish www.fishingportstjoe.com |

Here we go, its October and the fishing is just terrific. This week was redfish, trout, bluefish, and Spanish and along with those throw in a few ladyfish, hardtails and flounder not to mention the small grouper you will pull out of the grass. Have seen a fair amount of bait and mullet , but we are still throwing the artties. Come on down and jump in the fishing is getting hotter. With all the storms, red tide, and lack of work do to cancelled trips because of Mother Nature I have fished September away , and have already made plans for September 2006. I have done well this past September in spite of the storms , red tide and cancelled trips. Landed lots of good fish, spent a good deal of quality time with my Sons Captain Justin and Ryan and played for days on end with old friends , nieces and nephews . I have done many upgrades to our home here in Port St Joe and sweated through many days of yard work. I sure will miss September . It was as productive as it was fun. I have learned many new fishing tactics the past 30 days and the biggest reward has been more hookups. I would like to share one of them with you . I have learned that I need to see my retrieve . I will start with my line, I went to Power Pros Hi Vis Yellow this helps me see where my line is at all times. There are many brands and colors of mono and braid and I use a bunch of them . Find the one that your eyes see the best and stick with it. The fish we targeted the most in September were the redfish although the best month is here now for this hard fighting , tasty fish . We used gold spoons to get there attention , tied with a double loop or canoemans knot direct to the ring . If you try this make sure you check you line every other fish. Check it for ware ,because you now have done away with the stronger leader material you have relied on in the past. If this works as well for you as it does for us remember were you read it. Port St Joe in September, wow the summer is fading fast. The redfish and trout are still hitting hard on the flats. Cast a good gold spoon and your there. We here at A Bay Charters use a Capt Mikes with the green sticker, but most any gold spoon will work in a pinch. Big pin fish are also working well for redfish and trout and you can catch the pin fish with the gold spoon too. Scallops season is about to end so I hope everyone got their share. We would love to put some back for the winter but with all the storms and loss of power we know better. Large blues and Spanish are still willing to take what you have to offer so don’t be shy cast away if you want to put one in the boat. The blues and Spanish also love that gold spoon. Today’s fish were all landed on red and white top waters and gold spoons except one we used a live pinfish . Good luck and have a safe trip. Capt. Here we are early August and the fishing is terrific. Good trout, redfish, Spanish, blue fish, lots of flounder and a limit of scallops can top off your day. The jacks have moved into the flats and can be the fight of the day. The schools of jacks not only raise the water but your blood pressure too. They love my gold spoons and have taken them on many cast that was meant for red fish. The sharks are still hanging around in good number and we have landed some monsters. The tarpon are still here, but its hit and miss with more miss than hit, If you go after tarpon only bring your lunch as it is sure to be a long day. The gold spoon is still the ticket on the flats or sling your mullet under a cork. Have a safe trip Captain Goodrich |

The bay is on fire! Fish are everywhere in St Joe Bay. We have done well all month fishing for redfish, trout, bluefish, Spanish, flounder and pompano. We have even boated a few cobias around the flats. For redfish I use a gold spoon or L-Ys . The bigger trout have been on top water spook jrs bone colored and live Pin fish. The pompano on small yellow and red jigs tipped with red fish-bites. The flounder have been on L-Ys and the cobia on Pinfish. The Spanish have been hitting all baits live, dead, and tossed . The bluefish have been the same as Spanish with their bite. Hope all have a safe trip Captain Gary Goodrich |

The spotted sea trout has a more common name here on the panhandle of Florida ” speckled trout” and in many fishing circles its known simply as a “speck”. The speck with its white flesh and terrific flavor is a valued food and game fish found in the shallow sand flats around barrier islands. I hope after reading this you will have a better understanding of the speckled trout and that you will be enjoying your fishing time more and you will take a look at your fishing habits so you can find better ways to protect what we have. Description to 36 inches ; 16 lbs. Elongate fusiform, moderately compressed dark gray upper with bluish iridescene and black spots that extend onto the dorsal and caudal fins. Its spiny dorsal fin is a dusky color with other fins being a pale yellowish with silvery below. The dorsal fins are separated by a deep notch. The soft dorsal fin is unscaled with its base much longer then the anal fin base. Caudal fin is truncate or emarginated. The specks mouth is oblique; it’s lower jaw projects beyond the upper jaw and extends beyond the eye. The upper jaw has two large curved canine teeth; the scales are small; there is a lateral line that extends to caudal fin tip. However my specks average 15 to 23 inches and somewhere around 1 to 4 lbs. Habitat of the specks range from as juveniles hanging in the estuaries, tidal mud flats, grass beds and salt marshes. Larger specks like mostly shallow coastal waters over sand. Specks are found here on the Panhandle year round. There range can be from Cape Cod to Florida; In the Gulf of Mexico in West Florida to Laguna Madre Mexico. They prefer an area with low to medium salinity of coastal waters. From the bottom to the top of the water the speckled trout is a voracious predator that will lay in ambush and feed on most any animal it finds. It will feed on most any fish, but the main diet seems to be mullet, menhaden, croaker and pin fish. They also will take shrimp and crabs as well. I have found I can catch lots of small trout on shrimp, but my larger fish come from fish baits such as the mullet or pi fish. So when fishing for the specks I like to set out a good mullet to soak in hopes of a big trout, but I will at the same time fish shrimp under a cork or free lined. I will also toss top water lures such as the mirrolure top dog with my favorite color being bone. Others will be a plastic grub and my favorite color there is green with a red tail. I will also fish the DOA shrimp under a cork or all by its self. And for trolling for specks my favorite is a mister twister green with red tail. Specked trout have a life span of about ten years. With the fish aged 1 to 10 years will have an average length thus being 8, 12, 15, 18, 22, 25, 27, and 30 so a fish 15 to say 22 inches will be a fish 3 to 5 years old. These fish will mature between their first and third years of life. Now that May has arrived a lot of us will be fishing the shallows. So let’s watch out for the bottom and be careful not to do any prop scarring. It’s a good time to pull your boat up anchor out and try wading the flats. You will see the difference in the amount of fish you catch and you will be assured your prop does no damage to the bottom. Good luck and safe trips, Captain Gary Goodrich. |

Today’s Trip was out of Pensacola what a wonderful place. The weather was just right; the water was clear along the beach and with the north wind blowing it made for good fishing hugging the coast. The crew had partied at the Flora Bama all day Saturday, but was ready to fish Sunday. Each of the crew members tossed a mullet from Alabama to Florida on Saturday along with pouring bushwhackers down, so I wasn’t sure how they would handle a days fishing but these guys know how to party and how to fish. We started slow trolling about 4 knots with hurricane gold in color and a tree rig. After about 20 or so bluefish and as many Spanish they were ready to fish. We headed out along the beach trolling to the west and started catching big bull reds on the gold hurricane so I hooked up a gold stretch 25 and it was bringing them to the boat as well. The crew was having a ball with the big reds. About the time we made it to Pensacola beach we spotted a small pod of cobia reeled in the lines and threw a blue and white jig and an eel one small fish turned on the jig, took it then his buddies followed him to the boat and a good fish took the eel. Two on, hooked up everyone screaming telling each other how to fish. I was cracking up these guys had me rolling. They kept no fish, they fished hard landed a good amount and went back to the dock happy fisherman. |

Took off today from downtown ramp. Headed up into the bay searching for big trout in water 3 to 5 feet. I ended up with about 30 small trout. Got board with the trout so headed out towards the point. Trolled a hurricane gold color and took one nice king right away. Put out a tree rig with the hurricane and the battle began. Spanish of all sizes 3 and 4 at a time. Got board with the Spanish as quick as I did with the trout. Put on a chrome hurricane to troll with the gold. Hooked up on one more good king and as I was landing her something cut off the chrome hurricane or the line broke. It may have even been a bad knot tie up. The water temp 66 SE winds 10 to 15 and back at the dock by 10:00 am |

Fishing today was as good as it gets. I started at 8:00 am eastern time. The wind was light out of the north east. Water temp started out at about 67 degrees. I started out fishing a gold colored top dog on the flats. It was inhaled within the first two cast. A keeper red could not resist the action I had presented. Threw a few more times and decided to let a small peter size mullet try to attract a fish. I hooked him behind the dorsal fin under a 12 inch weighted cork slipping with a bead. I thought I would let him soak while I made a few more cast with the dog. As soon as I put the soak pole in the holder and picked up my dog I saw the water explode about 6 feet from the cork. It took me by surprise. I set my dog down hard grabbed the mullet and pow, there it was a nice trout in the boat. I rocked on throwing the dog and soaking mullet. As I did this I was catching plenty. Both ways worked well soaking mullet, shrimp and green backs and tossing the dog. Both seem to work well but that live bait thing is easy. So I put the dog back in its pen. After a while I was getting board watching cork slingers so I decided to give the fish and fisherman a rest. I trolled the rest of the day for the Spanish. We ended with a few good ones a few small ones. It turned out to be a good safe trip fishing the bay. |

It was one of those days.Charter didnt arrive so I headed out. It was blowing, cold and choppy.I wanted to troll but just wasnt right so I took a pannzey trip up the gulf county cannel to hide from the weather. It was the first time I have got to sit and fish in a long while. I had 4 dozen shirmp I almost saved them for supper, untill the red fish started up. They began eating all at once must have been a family of them . They were of grammer school age although a few may have been barly legal. I also hooked a few small trout and a few big crokers. Its been awhile, but crokers were allways on the table when growing up .So I saved enough for Suzie and I . Well after a couple hours fishing I thought how nice it was for them folks to arrange it were I got to fish. When I got back to my truck there was a note with an apology . It turns out they were on central time !! |

The waters getting right for lines getting tight !!! just wanted everyone to know im here for ya . The fishing here is good to say the least. Trout, reds , flounder and a few blues cant hardly wait for the rest of those fishey familys to swim by. Cobia, spanish , smoker kings.Wow what fun we will have not to mention table fair. I just would like to make enough this season to get electric lights in the house. I know its (at least not for me ) not all about a pay check , but boy it sure comes in handy !!! As much as I enjoy putting folks on fish I also enjoy eating under electric light. And that brings up this, when I get electric lights who wants the candels. Candel light suppers get old. |
