Fished today out of M.B. for 1 #15lb salmon and one slightly larger fish that made his escape at the net. Both fish were hooked in 220-240ft depth on the downrigger @ 120ft.The early hookup came on a purple haze hoochie/ green flasher and the one we boated was on a watermelon Apex.We also had a couple bait stealing short biters on the red rotary killer/bait combo w/flasher trolled at 50ft.It seemed like the fish turned on for "the fleet" between 9:15-10:30 and then fizzled....I`ll be back this weekend...jeff |

Probably a dumb question but where is the "red light" and what's it's relationship to the "entrance buoy"? Portside marine's compass bearings indicate the red light is 1.5 miles from the entrance buoy. The only thing I see is a red nun buoy in about 60 ft of water at 35 09' 22" N 120 43' 51" W. Can anyone help? |

The weather was great today but the bite slowed. We started at 8:30 in 200 ft of water in front of the rock and had three hits in the first half hour, boated two 15 and 9 lbs and had no more hits until we quit at 2:00. Some of the boats had zero. Bob |

Just wanted to thank Mel, Darby, Harlod, Mike, and all the others that worked behind the scene to provide one hell of a wing ding party. Had a great time. I knew there was going to be a lot of good news out of the club but the news exceeded my expections. The beer was exceptional, A fine American brew, full bodied. Mel, I see you can join the club or make donations on line. I'd like to throw out a couple of suggestions. Post a link to "Right to Fish" above. Advertise "Right To Fish" at the landings. A telephone message could sound like this. Central Coast rock cod season is now open an extra two months due in part to the Right to Fish Club. If you are interest in joining this club or would like to make a donation contact _____. Just food for thought. Carl |

I have been watching this weather site for a few days now and so far it has been pretty accurate forecasting the conditions in our area for salmon fishing. All the other forecasts indicated this morning would be like yesterday but this site indicated good conditions which it is !! http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecasts/graphical/sectors/loxMarineLoop.php |

Mel and I got a little salmon fishing in this morning before our CCFCC dinner tonite. We fished in a fleet of about 20 boats on a 240 three miles from the rock. All the boats had fish. We caught three 9-14 pounders and farmed a good one that was in our net twice which sheds light on our netting skills. The ocean was nasty. Hoochies and green falshers worked well. When we left at 10:00 the Princes had 7. Some of the fish were over 20 lbs. Hope to see you tonite. Bob |

Friends: 1. Look at today's Tribune sports page (last page). Very nice article by Wayne Shaw about the CCFCC and our upcoming fundraiser dinner. Also talks about the revision to current rockcod fishing regulations. 2. We are going to have a big crowd (I think) for our steak dinner fundraiser at the Morro Bay Community Center on Saturday .... SO PLEASE HAVE PATIENCE ... YOU MAY HAVE TO WAIT IN A LINE GETTING IN THE DOOR. Might pay to get there a little early. 3. I will be on Dave Congalton show (920 AM KVEC) this afternoon from 4-5 p.m. talking about fishing and the upcoming fundraiser. Mel. |

Gary, Trolling from the red light to the Pismo Pier is what most Avila fishermen call Salmon Alley. Josh, How long a leader do you use from the Apex to the Flasher? I assume it is a 11" Hot Spot. Thanks John |

I looked around to find out why UA was proposing this and found some information which Granite Grouper posted on the Coastside Political Board. Hope no one get's pissed at me for cuting and pasting but I thought this information was valuable to all and I coundn't have summerized it any better than Granite Grouper. Why are they advocating making California one big MPA? There are two main advantages for recreational anglers. First, by putting everything under the MLPA the DFG will be forced to have stated objectives when they impose any restriction on fishing. Under the MLPA each restricted area MUST be reviewed at least every five years and changes must be made to improve regulations. How many rules have been on the books for years without any one reviewing their effectiveness? The second is that the terms MPA and Reserve have been thrown around recklessly and interchangeably. They in law mean two different things. Recreational angling is allowed in MPAs (in fact so is commercial fishing). Reserves are no-take areas. By declaring the state an MPA, anyone wanting a reserve is going to have to make it very clear what they are doing. The way things are currently handled, it may be far too easy for them to spring a reserve on us when then have been talking about an MPA. We need to keep them honest and prove that reserves are needed and that there is no other way to meet the fishery management objective. As a practical matter, all of southern California is already regulated. We are losing nothing in a designation as an MPA. Also under current law, the Commission has full control of recreational fishing but some types of commercial fishing are still regulated by the legislature. The Commission needs to be in full control. There’s going to be lots of claims about this but think it through.

Salmon Alley? Someone told me one of the best areas for trolling (according to this source) is the area south of Souza Rock buoy and parallel to the dunes. He said it was known as Salmon Alley. Anyone here of the area called that? Forecast for Saturday looks pretty good. A little breezy but swells about 5 to 7. I picked up some FBR's and I'm dying to try them. Any preference on color? Clear, Blue or Chartruese? Flasher, Dodger, Green, Red? I struck out opening day. Any help would be mostly appreciated. |

Fished out in front of the rock near the Princess most of the day. Only caught one, but it was nice at 28". According to Michelle on the Princess, bait w/ salmon killers was the ticket. I think they ended up with 9 fish on board. Water wasn't the best, but certainly "fishable". See you guys at the fund raiser. Bill |

Friends: I NEED YOUR HELP ... SERIOUSLY! Last year we thought we had sold about 175 tickets to our Morro Bay fundraiser and planned for possibly 200 ... and 300 showed up. Luckily we had plenty of extra fish and Sharon Rowley had made plenty of desserts. This year everyone knows that we sell tickets at the door .... and nobody is buying tickets in advance. WE NEED YOUR HELP! It is impossible to plan the food and beverage and tables, etc if we have no idea how many are showing up. SO ... PLEASE GO TO VIRGS'S OR PATRIOT SPORTFISHING OR FOUR SEASONS OUTFITTERS and buy your tickets ASAP so that we can have an idea how many steaks to buy. Two years ago when we had steak dinners, we ran out of meat and had to run down to Dorn's and get some more beef. Or, at a minimum, call the CCFCC office at 544-2424 and leave a short message of your name and how many tickets you want us to hold at the door for you. Somehow, either buy your tickets or get info to us on how many will be attending. Please... we need your help on this issue. Remember, its next Saturday, April 16 at Morro Bay Community Center ... $40 per ticket ...nice steak dinner. This is our biggest fundraiser each year. Show your support for the group that fights for your fishing rights. Mel. |

During a long and fruitless troll at 150' in 300', 6.76 miles straight out of MB and close to the Princess, I encountered the bubbles you guys are talking about. My sonar went from 300' to 50' and scared this poor novice. I drove over this area and the sonar went down to 300'. Big bait ball? I don't remember anything like it in 40 yrs. of fishing inshore. |

I hate to rain on everyones theories about the bubbles but they defineately are not from whales..cause the humpies blow a CURTAIN of bubbles to crown the bait, not a big area of bubbles like you describe, but a big RING OF BUBBLES... more likely it is a area of natural gas leaking out of the bottom like here in Santa Barbara where there is about ten of those bubble areas just boiling out of the bottom. Also it seems to me that there are oil wells in the area because I've seen the tanks on the hill and Price canyon has all kinds of oil wells. I say its natural gas vent!!!! |

TACKLE TIP: If you don't use super glue on your knots you should ! Was testing some knots this am. Tied a dropper loop in 30 # mono and tested it. It broke at 20 #. Added super glue and it didn't break at 30 # . I almost always use super glue on my knots but had not made a before-after test. |

Bubbles...Isaw bubbles all over near mussel point in about 100ft of water and it lasted all day long. It freaked me out. There were no whales in the area, bait, nothing and my sounder was freaking out...so I was not the only one. They were tiny bubbles but they were everywhere! 50yrds. in every direction. |

I found this report from the Fresno Bee Fishing Report. Salmon It's a slow and steady bite on salmon to 18 pounds trolling glow hoochies with gray stripes at 50- to 80-foot depth range 2 miles out of Morro Bay.

Carl and other beer guzzlers: Okay, I'll talk to the brewmaster and order some Firestone. When I use to drink beer, that was my favorite. In fact, I should probably blame Firestone for "why" I don't drink beer any more. Got too FAT! I will look into donations on-line. Carl, hope to see you at the dinner. Remember folks, 6 p.m. at Morro Bay Community Center on April 16, 2005. Get tickets from Virg's, Patriot Sportfishing, Four Seasons Outfitters, or any CCFCC board member (Harold Davis, Darby Neil, Steve Moore, Bob Hather, Mike Stanton or myself). Or call 544-2424. Mel. Just read a report from a boat out of SD that caught some albacore 125 miles south of SD that also included the water color as deep blue. For those of you that have a copy of the last chlorophyll image that spot is at the bottom of the image just to the left of the 0 km on the scale. This is the first correlation of an onsite observation vs. the new images. Terrafin indicated they will be up and running with chlorophyll in a couple of weeks. Looking at the latest chlorophyll image I would bet that the water 60 miles west of Morro Bay is blue and almost warm enough for albacore |

Mel It's a long shot that I'll make it to the dinner but wanted to throw out a suggestion. Last time I went to the dinner there were no good beers for us beer drinkers. Bud, Coors, Mexican Beers, or Canadian beers don't cut it. I'd suggest a fine American brew with full body like Firestone, Sam Adams, or the like. just my two cents. I'd like to throw out another suggestions while I'm at it. make it possible for folks to make online donations, its just easier. Mel, you are a relentless crusader for our right to fish, Thanks. Carl

Friends: Get you tickets now! Dinner is next Saturday (April 16) at 6 p.m. at Morro Bay Community Center which is right in the middle of town at on Kennedy Way. It is right down the street from City Hall. The attire is "casual". It will be a great time. We are shooting for 300 people. Should be a nice steak dinner with nice auction and raffle items. Tickets are $40 each ... and the money goes to a great cause. BY THE WAY .... IT IS NOW OFFICIAL We have succeeded in getting our fishing (rockcod fishing)from SHORE OUT TO 40 FATHOMS (240 feet). The regs had us fishing from May-Sept. in 20-40 fathoms. This meant that kayakers and some small skiff fishermen were out of business. You also would not be able to fish the kelp beds. But our arm-twisting paid off. We convinced CDFG that it was dangerous to force people to fish that far from shore or the protection of ports. So, we now have fishing from shore out to 40 fathoms because of efforts of the CCFCC. I also have a promise from CDFG top officials that they will look carefully at the "catch data" after May-July ... and if the numbers are low enough, we may get additional fishing in Oct-Dec. We'll see. See you all at the big dinner on April 16, 2005. Mel. |

Bubbles: Ok, we probably beat this thing to death and nobody seems to know for sure what it is, but I can find no Geological evidence that the area around Souza rock had any geothermal or seizmic activity on opening day. I think the charts show an effluent line (sewer) running out south of the Pismo pier but it doesn't go that far off shore. I checked the USGS for seismic activity in the area for the past week and there was no occurance on April 2nd. If anyone is interested heres the link. http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/ The only reasonable explanation would be local whale activity "hearding food" although I hadn't heard of any on that day nor did we see any around the buoy. One thing for sure, the salmon didn't like it because we came up empty handed that day. Fished till noon and then ran for port due to the wind. Fair winds and tight lines to all! |

Mel - two quick questions about the dinner. First, what is the appropriate attire? Second, where exactly is the Community Center? Thanks, Bill PS: When I bought my tickets at Virg's I forgot to ask - duh! |

BUBBLES .5" IN SIZE,AND OCCURING OVER A PERIOD OF TIME IN THE SAME LOCATION. TO BIG FOR BAIT AND STAYING IN THE SAME LOCTION IS A PROBLEM. THERMAL VENT(S) HOPEFULLY AREN`T THE SOURCE OR THERE COULD BE ALOT MORE IN THE WORKS. WHALES USE BUBBLES TO CORRAL BAIT FISH BUT THEY SURFACE TO FEED, IVE SEEN THEM RECENTLY FEEDING IN THAT MANOR |
