John & Friends:

I like your suggestion, John. The description in the DFG handbook is not very helpful. Some pictures of real fish would be better. I like the idea of colored flyers handed out at launch ramps.

Tomorrow I think we will travel north up above the lighthouse and if I catch a canary, I'll take pictures of it. Then I'll take it to Kinkos and make some flyers. The smooth chin is not a very good indicator, but when combined with the color which is more of a yellowish-orange ... and usually a gray stripe ... usually are best indicators. Also, "when in doubt ... throw it back."

I'll get back to all of you on this subject later.

I got my two salmon.
On the Canary Rockfish: Don't bring them in.
Does anyone have a photo of a Canary to put on this site?

any print shops donate to the cause? i'm pretty sure del wouldn't mind handing out a flyer to every boat launched..i think the same bean counters at the dock in the afternoon should be handing out flyers in the morning with a good pic of a canary and a red...better yet, the dfg should quit spending a fortune on patrol boats and get back to good old field glasses and a green pick-up truck..i think the crew it takes to run a patrol vessel would be of better use on the beach..........ok, end of rant.

After reading melvins report on the mistaken I.D. between the canarys and the vermillion it is a easy mistake to make.A lot of fishermen do not have access to the internet or lack the experience to know that you need to feel the lower underside of the jaw to tell the difference. A lot of hard work has gone into trying to keep the fishing open now maybe we can put some effort in trying to educate the casual fishermen on the no retention fish. How about a color baord at the ramp to help with the ID. I was checked a couple times last year fortunately I was good to go,and on one occasion I suggested this to the game wardens. They informed me that they to felt the average fisherman needs help and had suggested it to Sacramento. The reply from the boys above (it is your job to write citations) and I quote.

Friends:

Now that I have finished my lecture ... maybe we can see some nice rockfish. This ling was big enough that I could have kept him last year with the 30 inch requirement. He'll be nice eating too.

Saw a lot of nice big reds today and some fat salmon....

Friends:

It was a fabulous day on the water. Flat calm, warm and the fish were cooperating.

Now the bad news! We have got to protect our right to fish. I saw some disturbing things today. I saw the CRFS inspector at the launch ramp and then later at the cleaning station. He was showing a fisherman that he had caught an illegal fish, a canary rockfish. He was trying to point out how to identify a canary. These CRFS workers are not law-enforcement, but they pass on this information to their superiors. Later I asked him how many canary rockfish he had counted today. He said about 20! He said that about a half dozen boats had canary rockfish and some had 4 or 5 on the boat.

THIS IS AN ILLEGAL FISH. YOU CANNOT TAKE CANARY ROCKFISH!

This is the one species of fish that is likely to get us closed down early. I realize that there are more of them being caught ... but you cannot bring them home in your bag. The CRFS guys use these illegally caught fish and extrapolate these numbers to the whole state. They probably concluded that as much as a TON of canaries were caught in California today!!!!!

There are some other facts you need to know about rockfish angling. When they ask you how many fish you released, I would always keep it to a low number because they assume 100% mortality on released fish. It is not illegal to release a bunch of fish, but if you tell them that you release 10-20 fish ... they count it against the statewide tonnage quota. Also, don't ever say you released any canaries ... because that will be used as part of the quota for canaries because they assume the fish died ....

So, here are my suggestions:

1. Get to know your species of fish.
2. Don't be exaggerating about the number of released fish ... in fact, I would keep it to a very low number;
3. Don't admit that you released any canary rockfish ... and certainly don't bring them to the launch ramp.

Fishing is going to be fabulous this year ... and we need to protect our right to continue fishing. Use your heads ....

Mel.

Fished Leffingwell today with Stacey for some pretty slow rockfishing. Ended up with 3 nice reds, but no keeper lings. Everyone else we talked to did about the same. Not sure where the fish were??? Lots of whales cruising close to shore...Wow!!!

The salmon fishing was ok today. When I left at 9:30 some boats had three, most had at least one. There were a number of fish over 20 lbs. We had a double for some excitement. We fished in 190 feet with hoochies at 150. Perfect weather, lots of whales and bait. See you out there tomorrow in front of the rock.

Dave,
If the water continues to warm and it stays as clean as the Chloro pics are showing I think we will be running outside during the Cayucos Safety Meeting! Back from Vegas on Tuesday and will start boat work and packing. Will be in touch with details. Salmons, Albacore, Halibut and some toad reds ... this could get epic.

Hey Michael,
If you're fishing this weekend good luck!
I'm taking my three kids out to Rosa...the seabass have been on fire, but it all stopped yesterday. Still, there are some big reds going off and I want some.
Will possibly fish Morro next Sunday. Got skunked last Saturday and am feeling beaten! Did get two at Moss opening day, though, so all is not lost.

It's all so confusing isn't it? I think mhahlbeck was in reference to the pre season reg changes where we could only fish from 120 to 240 ft. That would have made it illegal to fish any other species in less than 120ft of water with rockfish on board. The regs now let us fish for rockfish 0 to 240 ft. thanks to the efforts Mel and CCFCC and others. My three sons is on target there. We need to find a shorter handle for mhahlbeck, how about Beck? That's a hard one to type. LOL

Better re-check that about fishing salmon after rock cod. There was an article about rock cod fishing a few issues back in Western Outdoors, and it said it was illegal to fish anything after rock cod. It was the Q & A with the warden.

My message was just to be on the up and up with F&G. Why stir up trouble if you don't have to. If you're doing things right, they will have less reason to mess with you out on the water. Give them a reason for suspicion and they will hassle you every time you go out. I was checked on the water opening day for salmon and I was following the rules. They approached me again on my next outing and only asked me if I had fish, which I didn't. They wished me luck and was on their merry way. I would assume they remembered me from their first visit. Good bunch of guys if you treat them with respect. We're all trying to do the right thing out there and have a good time doing it. Arguing about having illegal set ups and a possible citation and time in the courts is not my idea of enjoyable days on the ocean, doing what I like to do. Best of luck and hope you catch your limits, wherever they may be.

If you are lucky enough to catch salmon and then go rockfishing just use single barbless. It is not illegal to have a barbed hook unless it is in the water. Having a barbed hook on a pole is not illegal unless the warden sees you fishing with it. A barbed hook on a line was cited last year and the judge ruled if it was not in the water it was not a violation. It's in the books if you need it. My advice is to just use a single barbles and avoid the hassel.

Gary, I believe that at least south of Conception that "no fishing after rockfishing" reg went out the window. It is now ok to target other shallower species after rockfishing down here. Good luck!

Heads up! F&G will probably be out in force Sunday with the rockfish opener. Beware if you are fishing for both species, you will have to target the rockfish first as you can not have salmon on board while fishing for rockfish with barbed hooks on any rigging. Ok to have the gear in the tackle box, it just can't be on any rods or lines if I understand the regs. Harrell is right on on the Lings.

You might want to check out the regs before Sunday's rockfish opener. For example: Lingcod is 2 at 24" or more. That 30 " size last season was tough.

WE scratched up one salmon out of Morro yesterday.

Fished Morro today. Weather was interesting, had a bit of everything! Flat and sunny, then rain, white caps and 4' chop, then nice and sunny with leftover chop. Trolled from 9am-3:30. Ended up with only one but it was 20lb. so, not bad. Straight out in 200" on a green rsk/chovie 125 on the wire about 12:30.

One note... AWAYS double check that the crew (even if the crew is your boat partner!) didn't un-hook the bow before backing down the ramp with a roller trailer!!! disaster narrowly averted...

Hey Eric on the Tyee...that's got to be funny...trouting with the Farallon! Every now and then i get tempted to do the same with mine...guess I'll just get a tin boat and throw the kicker on it. Hope you do well at Morro; don't give up on Moss yet. Half Moon was good until the front hit this morning up there.

I hear ya on the gas prices. Planning on being on the water 6 or 7 days in a row. Cant imagine what the gas bill is going to be if we decide to run offshore more than a few times. Probably will just fish Salmon and the big reds on a few pinnacles around San Simeon. If weather holds thinking about running up towards Pt. Lopez for some of the primo Rockcod areas.

Hell just happy to have the house with the steps to the beach for some Perch fishing every night.

Dustin

I hear yah... I've been looking real hard at the break north along the 20/20 line. Was 58ish and blue according to terrafin and connected to the warmer water south. It's only 25or so mi out. If only gas wasn't $2.75 and it was oh, late may/early june? Still, very tempted to run out just to see the color, stretch the boats legs a bit. Poor boat has only had salmon and trout on it so far. Trout fishing with a 2000lb fishhold is just WRONG! It needs a washing in tuna blood.

Harrell, Looks like we'll be going out of Morro. Will be monitoring 68. Vessel name is Tyee. Farallon 25.

And Harrell. If we decide to run offshore next month while at the rental I wont have a computer. So will call you with water conditions, maybe get an idea of water color compared to Jeffs new Chloro shots. Weather and time permitting.

The red/yellow is probably the best for salmon and light blue and blue/purple for Albacore. WE will need a few onsite reports to be sure.

Heard of a couple salmon caught near the red light out of PSL today. We will be out there tomorrow.

Good luck tomorrow Eric. If those Salmon dont cooperate, take that new rig offshore and see what that clean water and temp break is doing around the donut area. We will be staying at Cayucos for 2 weeks in a beach rental next month. So plan on doing some exploring offshore to see what its looking like. Once again good luck tomorrow, and look forward to seeing the new boat.

Good Karma

Thanks for the report. Plan on fishing tomorrow but can't decide where to tow to. Morro is a lot closer tow for us than Moss and it sounds like Moss has been dead for the last few days.

Anyone else out of Morro/PSL today?

Fished out of MB this morning from 7:00 until 10:45 for 1 #12lb fish which we caught right outside the harbor entrance as we were pulling up the gear.We caught that fish in 140 ft depth @ 120ft on the wire on a watermelon crocodile behind a watermelon Seps flasher...There was TONNAGE of bait out in the 220-245ft area where the fleet has been fishing but we had no biters in that area.I marked 9 separate large baitballs in that area on my GPS.Several other boats fishing tight to the beach inside of 165ft picked a few fish also.Generally slower fishing today...jeff

Friends:

Another big thank-you to everyone who generously supported the CCFCC at our big Morro Bay fundraiser on April 16. These funds are helpful in our battles to protect fishing rights.

Here are a couple photos from the dinner. In one photo you might recognize Sharon Rowley and her daughter, Captain Michelle.

Fished from 6:30-10:00 Sunday from MB for a big zero.It seemed a bit slower for all of the boats than last Thurs when I did OK....The boats that caught fish all seemed to be fishing their gear a lot deeper, like 150-180 down the wire.We hooked one good fish yesterday on the watermelon Apex down 120` in 200ft depth, but got cut off on the other downrigger cable.Overall quality of the fish seems to be improving.I will be out again on Tues. so an update today would be appreciated...jeff

Fished Morro Bay Sunday. Beautiful ocean! Lots of big bait balls from 180' out to 220'. Got an 8 and 15 pounder and threw one short back. Had about 6 other knockdowns. All hits were at 175' on green croc's. Saw two salmon swimming on the surface. Coasties and F&G were out but very friendly and easy to work with. Worth fishing tomorrow but work says no way.

Went out of Morro Bay Saturday. Took my friend Bill Romer and his son PJ.
Bill caught his first Salmon ever, 33 inches 19 LBS. What a great morning, we went in about 1:00
I heard Bob and Mel out there, sounded like they were having a great time, as we all were.
Just want to thank Mel and the group for the fundraiser last Saturday evening. We had a great time. Jim and Norma Chandler/OnporpoiseBills Salmon

The salmon bite picked up a little today with two thirds of the boats returning with fish. There were some quality fish caught as well. I heard one boat out of Morro caught 4, we boated two and boats out of PSL did about the same. The weather was great, quite a surprise.

Fished PSL yesterday in the skiff. Fished 5 hours for 2 nockdowns and no fish on. They looked like shakers, but hard to tell. We were fishing in 100-130 feet of water in front of the lighthouse. Both hits came on an RSK/red flasher at about 60'. There was scattered bait, but no good balls. We talked to Sal on the Patriot who came back from the Pt. Sal area with 11 fish. Said they got into a hot bite with 10 fish in 1.5 hours. Hopefully they'll be showing up at PSL.
It is great to see all the reports. Keep it up:-)

steve
