Yesterday around 10am an offshore wind blew for about an hour in Cayucos, which also kept the onshore wind at bay. Totally contradictory to the forecast. Then in the late afternoon when the strong NW onshore did kick in, locally on the beach in Cayucos it was a south wind onshore. Often the NW gets "eddied" into a S wind in Cayucos. Don't ask me how.

In 20+ years of living here, I have often noted unusual and often contradictory wind patterns. Some days the NW onshore is blowing 25+ knots three miles off the beach and kicking up all kinds of whitecaps, while on the beach it is glassy or slightly offshore. The NW gets "backed-up" by a bubble of warm offshore winds.

So in defense of the weathermen, an area-wide forecast will never be able to always accurately predict localized patterns that are affected by localized topography and such.

Here's a pretty consistent indicator in Cayucos and MB for NW winds: if your decks, patios, lawn furniture etc. are very wet with dew in the morning (and it isn't or wasn't foggy), chances are very good that it will blow hard to the beach. This morning, for example, my deck chairs were dry. The buoys are almost 40 knots right now at noon-thirty. Yet it's nearly glassy on the beach, with moderate whitecaps 3-4 miles out. It probably ain't gonna blow, except maybe late late this afternoon when the bubble may burst and the NW gets thru.

Weather:
After piloting aircraft for 15 years, and fishing the ocean for 45 years, I believe in the old airman's rule, gather all available weather information concerning a voyage or flight and make your own "go or no-go" decision.
Weather services, including The National Weather service seem mostly unreliable.
I am hoping that if and when the tuna show, that some of you experienced tuna fisherman will feel sorry for me and let me tag along when you venture out. I don't think I will slow you down, and the added safety of two or more vessels would be prudent and comforting when going 20+ miles out, plus,,,we could cover more ground...... I want a tuna.

some weather folks we have, as dustin and I stood on the beach pondering why we were there, and the ocean was flat, there was a great onshore breeze big surf but it was fishable, oh well had a good time relaxing and shooting the bull with Dustin , the perch were not cooperating but who cares just a good day in the sun and warm sand,,, the folks in the east would kill for this weather.
Next weekend the weather WILL be nice;;;;;;;;
i hope

Interesting observation. The Cape San Martin buoy is reading wind 27 kts gusting to 37. Seas were 10.5 ft every 7.5 sec. But I just spoke to my friends rockfishing by Hazard Canyon and they said it was a little bumpy but no wind and very fishable.

What happened to these 12 foot seas we were supposed to have? I'm looking at a fairly flat sea with the "Billy Boy" out gathering bait this morning.
What about the water temperature?

Fished Wed. out of MB for 1 legal salmon in the afternoon on a watermelon apex on the downrigger @ 90 ft in 168ft off the ROCK.I had nada except a 19 incher in the AM between 7-10 but the Salty Dog had a Quick limit of 4 legals, fishing right next to me with the same gear...I went in to take care of some business and came back out @2:30 to get my fish by 3:30 and call it a day.The water was almost 5 degrees warmer in the PM and there was no bait anywhere near the Rock.Weather permitting I`m going to try the salmon up north near the Cambria "Motels" on saturday..jeff

Today's salmon bite was the slowest yet. By 1:00 I heard of only one 24" salmon caught. However, as we were comming in from 280 ft of water to 160 ft in front of the rock we had a triple strike at 80 ft on various baits and out of that I brought a 15 pounder to the side of the boat. I just couldn't risk breaking my eight days of not boating a keeper, so I pulled just hard enough to dislodge the hook before we could net him.

What time do the perch turn on? Incoming tide I suspect. Have not fished for perch in years, but I enjoy it. I live in an old house on Cayucos beach that I am attempting to repair, and would like to catch a few perch while I am here.

Just talked to my dad who is fishing out of Morro and they have none in the box. They did have one hooked up about 30 mins ago but it popped off.

Now for the bad news. He had our spoon box laying on the back of the boat and forgot to put it away before he took off out of the harbor. Off it went. They didn't realize it until later that it was missing. They do not remember whether or not the box was open, so not sure if it floated away or sunk. It is in a flat gray rectengular box with all of our spoons and cable bait hooks. Lots of money in the water now. If anyone happened to pick this up or saw it floating around somewhere, please let us know. Either through email or reply on here please.

Out in MB by 6am today, got 2 infants by 9am. These 25" fish aren't anything like 2 weeks ago, when we were catching 20+ pounders. Fun though. No complaints, no fish lost and no undersized.
Trolling deep,(both salmon were on the bottom at 150' in 180')) I brought up a baby halibut on the apex.

Friends:

Let me add to Bob Hather's comments. I checked in with Bob and Steve Moore when we rolled out of MB harbor at 7:30 a.m. this morning. They both said the bite was off for salmon and that my partner and I would do better going for rockfish. We took their advice and headed for our honeyhole's down by Pt. Buchon. We pulled out our favorite killer swimbaits and dropped down expecting to pull in a limit by 10 a.m.

Well ... it didn't work out that way. Fishing is not what you always expect. We did not pick up a single keeper rockfish in the next three hours! We were despondent and started looking around and trying new rigs. WE THOUGHT WE MIGHT GET SKUNKED!

At 11 a.m. the bite started ... and we nailed some big reds and keeper lings. You all know how great the weather was ... we had a nice limit of big reds, johnny bass and a couple big ling cod by mid afternoon. Turned out to be a lovely day on the water. At the cleaning station we saw some pee-wee salmon ... hope most of you did better.

Mel.

Salty Doc, you're the man; 4 keepers by 7:30. For the rest of us it was scrachy. I kept my record going for 7 straight trips for zero keepers. Like me most of the boats releasd a half dozen shakers today. A few boats had 1 to 4 fish but nothing big fishing in front of the rock today.

Clark,
Don't plan on a long day of fishing. The wind has been coming up between 9:30 and 11 am.
Tide will be good for launch at 5am. High tide at 7 am. Launch on the right side.
They have been catching some. I am toying with the idea of going tomorrow. You probably won't see fog, but no gaurantees. Don't wait too long to decide to come in. Watermellon Appex has been good for me at 100'.

Clark, Check the Diablo Cyn. report which is linked to this site and also the San Martin Bouy at http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46028. The combination of these is a pretty good indicator of the conditions. The ramp at MB is pretty good but check the current by looking at the direction of the boats in the harbor, at times the speed of the current can cause some difficulty at the dock. The harbor mouth can be a little scary during a big swell. The other thing I would suggest is to have a GPS and mark the harbor mouth. The fog can come in within a really short period and without a GPS it sucks looking for the entrance of the harbor. One other thing is a must, VHF radio. Good Luck, Tight Lines, Hope this helps.

Rick Hanks, the BLM’s CCNM manager, and Jim Martin, west coast regional director of the RFA announced that the organization will be working as a collaborative partner to help the BLM and its other partners in the implementation this unique national monument.

“We are delighted that RFA will be bringing insight and expertise to the long-term protection and management of the unique resources of the California Coastal National Monument.” Hanks said. “Their participation during the public comment period brought to light important concerns of the recreational fishing community, and helped us modify the draft plan to address these issues. Their help will be important as we work to implement the monument’s Resource Management Plan that will be completed this fall.”

”If there is a problem with coastal resources, recreational anglers want to be part of the solution, said Dr. Fred Hollander of the RFA. “At the same time, we want to preserve our coastal fishing access that Californians cherish.”

The California Coastal National Monument, established by presidential proclamation in January 2000, includes more than 20,000 rocks and small islands stretching the length of the California coastline. The monument includes rocks and islands from the mean high tide line, out 12 nautical miles.

“RFA members were concerned about some of the language in the draft management plan for the CCNM that may have impacted our freedom to fish around the exposed rocks and reefs along our coast,” reported Martin. “As the BLM discovered during a series of public meetings up and down the coast, RFA members are well-informed and dedicated to preserving public access, and they are ready to turn out in force when their interests are at stake. At the same time, we demonstrated that RFA members are eager to discuss how recreational fishermen can help protect natural resources and cooperate with federal agencies when real problems are identified.”

The BLM works in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Game and Department of Parks and Recreation in day-to-day management of the monument. In addition to RFA, other collaborative partners include the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and PRBO Conservation Science.

Hanks said that in the future more collaborative partners will be added to help implement particular aspects of the monument. The CCNM’s collaborative partners are agencies and organizations that have specific interests and expertise that, when linked with the CCNM, enhance both the monument’s purpose, as well as the mission, goals, and purpose of the collaborative partner. Additionally, local governmental organizations and entities with ownership and management responsibilities for specific portions of the coast that adjoins part of the CCNM will be invited to serve as stewardship partners.

The BLM will be releasing the Proposed Final Resource Management Plan/Final Environmental Impact Statement for the CCNM later this spring. A 30-day public protest period on the document will begin upon release. For more information contact Hanks at the California Coastal National Monument Office, (831) 372-6115 or email by at cacnm@ca.blm.gov.

Salmon fishing in front of the rock in 160 feet of water today prduced a lot of shakers and a few good quality fish. We had one on for ten minutes today that was the biggist I've seen in a long time. It made numerous jumps two feet out of the water then went straigt down stripping 30 lb line all the way to the bottom. We gave it our best until the the hook pulled. All three of us got to fight it for a while.

Salmon fishing was excellent yesterday out of MB...We had 3 #20lb class fish plus 2 just legal fish trolling Croc`s and Apex lures in 135-160ft just outside the harbor entrance and north toward Hwy 1 and toro Creek rd.We also lost 3 nicer fish at boatside to pesky seals. Our first fish was at 7:30 and last was at 10:45 when the wind started to come up and we called it a day...good luck...jeff

Well Dave,
Dragged the boat over on Friday so its sitting in front of the house. If for some reason "My Three Sons" decides to give you major troubles we can dunk mine instead. Need to hook up batteries and charge this evening and remount the bilge and we should be in business. Plenty of slabs for everyone .. we just need to work on the details of the perch tourny. I think the a drinking game for the girls is in order!
Salmon made a showing yesterday .. guess I should have got off the beach. Was just having way to much fun watching the oldest in the surf. Give me a ring later on this evening.

Does anyone know if Matt is planning on having bait anytime soon?

Perch are pretty much wide open each evening on the incoming tide. Released at least two limits yesterday and a few given away to a happy couple for dinner. Will be back fishing the surf out in front of 7th and Pacific in Cayucos if anyone wants to join in.

Looking for simplified version of current rockfish regs. Current understanding is ten fish limit, no take on certain specie such as Canary, Lings 24" min. two fish limit, Cabezon 15" min, etc.
Are there other limitations on number of specie such as blues, olives, yellowtail rockfish within the ten fish limit i.e. two each within ten?

Used to rockfish lots but gave it up entirely when they messed up the regs so bad; no time to get law and biology degees. Hope its a little simpler now so I can take my Daughter fishing more often. rc out

John,

Thanks for the compliment on my boat. One of the best things about it is that you can fish all day, I mean really, all day on 6 gallons of super unleaded! And you can carry an extra can "just in case. Yes, she is sweet in a following sea, and the more I look at the pictures of her, the saddre I am to sell her. Hopefully she will find a new home with someone who will appreciate a fine wooden boat.

Fished PSL yesterday in the skiff. Caught 3 nice halibut (24-28"). Deke had excellent bait; 4-6" chovies. Not a single bait rolled all day long. Also broke off a big fish, but think it may have been a nice ling.
Heard that the Patriot caught a few salmon while rocking fishing in 180' of water. There has got to be some fish out there if they are getting them on rockfish gear.
best fishes,
steve

Today was a very good day. On a spur of the moment whim I decided to go fishing in spite of small craft advisory. I decided to go south from the rock and caught a limit of rockfish. I decided to troll from buchon, lots of bait in 180 ft of water. I caught a 24lb and a 18lb salmon in 2 passes in 15 minutes. They were caught on watermelon apex. They were both caught 100ft down.

I have a boat for sale... A classic wooden boat. It's a 1969 Calkins Bartender 19', lovingly and meticulously restored by me. The double-ender Bartender series was designed by Oregon marine architect George Calkins specifically for rough water fishing. I hate to sell her, but I just bought a new 27-footer and can't justify keeping 2 boats. She has a Lowrance fishfinder/chartplotter, VHF, stereo, custom 3-sided canvas/isinglass top, Custom stainless downriggers, bait tank and 2 fuel tanks. The motor is a 2000 Suzuki 50hp 4 stroke, purchased new in 2000, and has only 240 hours on it and still has over 1 year left on the factory warranty. The motor is mounted in a well inboard, as the stern is pointed like the bow.
Also comes with a single axle trailer. Asking $9,500. Please call (805) 215-8862 if you are interested.

Thanks!
Paul

We went rock fishing today in 160-190 ft of water south of the Rock for limits of reds and lings in three hours. Three of the reds were 8 1/4 lbs. Best rockfishing I've seen in a long time. From the weather forcast I thought we would get blown off but the wind died down at around 9:00am and it was very nice.

Yea Jeff ... sat on the porch and enjoyed a cocktail at low tide last night. Once the incoming started I walked down to the water and it was wide open! Thought the one slug was a flatty at first .. never had a perch pull line like that. Good fun, usualy just release everything but will let the daughter eat a couple tonight.

Moe ..May or may not fish next Sunday. If I do and have room on the boat will give you a call before next weekend.

Thanks for that Stacey. Pulled on some HOG Barred surfperch last night just north of Cayucos. All fish released except 2 and one of those fish is pushing 4lbs. Daughter wanted to eat fish last night but had to hold off to weigh this hog tonight. Doubt its going to break any records but by far the largest perch I have caught locally.
Probably pulled a dozen fish in an hours time and all fish were in the 1-2lb range. All fish caught on motor oil grub, sliding sinker combo with floro. Great fun and daughters had a blad pulling on fish in the surf.
Taking the boat over tonight, should be on the water sometime this weekend and as well as next. Not sure if I plan on running outside as of yet, but if I do you can expect a report.

Dustin, Dave, et all;
Take a look at this Navy composite. If I were going to explore any where now it would be the arguello canyon area. I have always heard the same thing as Dustin ie; our fish come from the W/SW and are not the same group as San Diego.

With Deigo as slow as it has been and the poor report from up north around the Guide area I see your point. Although I still believe that the fish that we get early in the season are not the same fish from Deigo. Have had this conversation with biologist friends and the jury is still out on where these fish come from for sure.
I still believe WEST ... And conditions are starting to look similar to three years ago. And we all know how that season turned out. Time will tell ... just anxious.

Big D, I know of a boat that went out to the Guide the other day to fish what looks to be the same water...por nada. Granted, that's farther north than the Donut! Well, we can hope. Lack of any volume to our south right now (Sandyeggo) isn't promising for an early shot up here, but what do I know?!! Maybe they'll push in from the west and drive up the Escarpment. Still wouldn't mind big reds!
Go get those perchies tonight!

Well Dave its going to be a great time for sure. Just got done looking and overlaying the Chloro and SST from Terrafin. I think we should seriously consider making the run offshore depending on weather. The water that was outside the elbow area has pushed a good 15 miles inside and is CLEAN! Water just south of the Donut area is pushing up and in (typical as in years past) That water is also clean with a good temp break.

If it continues this inside push and the water clarity stays the same I say we should go take a look. Regardless going to to be a great Central Cal Safety Meeting. Will give you a call later on for a report. Going to hunt down some Surf Perch this evening ... need to pre-fish for the tourny! HA

John I know you have the boat out of the water for repairs. But if you get any on the water information outside Arguelo Cannyon it would be appreciated.

Friends:

Some of you saw that ridiculous "tiny fish" ad on television produced by environmental extremists. They imply that fishing is on the decline along the California coast. WE KNOW OTHERWISE.

THEY HAVE TO RELY ON LIES IN THEIR AD. WE HAVE THE TRUTH ON OUR SIDE. Take a look at the pictures below.

Andrew Amador (Age 12) came up from Orcutt today and fished on the Pacific Horizon. After catching a nice limit of fish ... he certainly doesn't believe fishing is on the decline. This was his first fishing trip on the ocean ... and he was a trooper.

The second picture is the office manager at Patriot Sportfishing (Roger York) and his friends and relatives who all caught limits of nice fish before 11 a.m. The fishing today was fantastic.
