Blackie,
Thanks, these do look like the little devils.
I am familar with Charkbait. You would think a good tackle shop could survive here wouldn't you?
I'll check out Higuera St.

Thanks,

John

John, I think you are taking about Tora Tubes which are rigged with a large egg sinker inside. I will try to post a picture from a tackle store in huntington beach where I have found some good deals. They have and a website at www.charkbait.com. I will probably take a beating for posting it but I'm just trying to give you the info to find them. I have seen a limited selection at the new tackle store in SLO on S. Higuera. Hope this helps, Blackie Jr.

Does anyone remember the tackle shop across from Virges that went out a couple of years ago? Know where he went? I can't remember his name, but he sold me some tube jigs that are dynamite on reds and the last two I have got hammered the other day by some big reds. Kind of silly looking rubber tubes with a leadhead inside. Maybe 8/0
hook, with skirts. Purple is hot, so is white. Where can they be bought now?
Also, where is the best place to buy a new kicker OB? 15 to 20 HP w/ elect. strt., and power tilt? Yamaha or Honda. Only ones with tilt, I think.

Sissy, furbags do take tuna. Down in Diego, I have lost Yellowfin tuna up to 40 lbs. to the furbags. They wait until you have the fish next to the boat before snatching the sushimi away from you.

I was only joking about the White and kayaks, but I feel that is what is missing in our oceans locally. A big seal eating shark. Unfortunately they usually are killed by some one, either for money or by accident. I enjoyed years of fishing by launching throught the surf and have fished along side of many large sharks. The waters had much fewer seals. The rocks in Cayucos are so full of seals that some wait in the water to get a spot. I see it every day. Take a ride to Cambria and take a look. I have just started fishing salmon this year, and have been fortunate to have caught 9 without losing one to a seal. That would be heart breaking after trolling for 7 hours to get the last one. The liberals in Ca. are not going to let us (humans) do the job, so why not bring in a pro? A nice big White? (Or two)
And to you Mr. anonymous: That is what dicussion boards are all about. We all have our opinions about things. We all have different ways to do things. That's the way we learn.
But, that being said, I want to warn all fisherman that we are not the only ones watching sites like this, and our enemies in the right to fish world do not need to see some guy holding up a baby lingcod with his fingers throught he gills and bragging about catching 1000's of fish in less than 120' of water. I have talked to the upmost F&G, and the right to fish 120' or less (for the sport fisherman) in in the balance.
We as fisherman are (in Ca.) way out-numbered by
enviros, and must use discretion when bragging about our fishing. (Or taking advantage of a site like this for free advertisement purposes).

Do the seals bother tuna fishing?

Long one huh?

The salmon bite in front of the Rock was fair today with a mix of shakers and 20 pounders. We caught one keeper and one shaker in the two hours we fished. Lots of bait and dirty water in 120-170 ft of water.

Give the guy a brake he,s just trying to make a living. And anyone trying to make a living off the ocean deserves alot of credit.

excuse me SISSY , but i hope he was or is looking to make a meal of the big brown salmon eater (sealion) that ate the best fish we had on all weekend , its kinda hard when you see a 20 lb fish jump 20 ft from the boat and then have about 150 yds of line peel out in a matter of seconds only to see buford swimming off with your fish safley tucked in his mouth , and then to throw salt in the wound , slaping away about 10 times slowley enjoying your hard sought after fish

Thank all of you who posted great info on the radios and safety issues. I am glad to see that others are concerned with the ramp situation at MB. The last time I went out a bunch of drunks let their boat turn sideways and not only ran their prop into their own trailer they hit my new boat, taking some gelcoat with them. They were so drunk they got turned completely around in the ramp while others stared in amazement and hit their own trailer with the OB prop. It seems to be getting worse every time. Always some junker for sale taking up valuable trailer space. Or the campers who are too cheap to pay for a spot. I am for fee (not free) usage of the ramp area, if it would include better policing. I realize our HP and Police are stretched out now.
It is that time of year.

And thank you to all the military personel, whether active, retired, reserved, discharged or dead, for making it possible for us to enjoy the benefits of a free fishing world.

And while I'm whining,,,,A young man informed me that he and a friend witnessed the appearance of at least one large Great White near San Simeon last week........No doubt was looking to enroll in the Kayak classes offered on this site.....

Gang:

I was recently emailed the following, and thought it might be worth posting my reply here. The question was:

"I have often went way way offshore in search of tuna with nobody knowing my target area, Do you guys accept float plans?
What is the procedure? I also understand that the HP will tow disabled vessels back to MB if they are within a short distance (fortunate to not have any trouble yet), what is the threshold?"

Yes, we accept float plans. However, in my 10+ years at the Harbor Patrol I can count the float plans filed with us on one hand during my time. Very few people seem to use them. If you do decide to file one with us, be advised that during the spring and summer we are only on-duty until 7pm, and during the fall and winter it's 6pm. So any float plan closing time has to be before then with us. Also, it's always a sound idea to file such a plan witth a good responsible friend or spouse as well.

As for our area of response, our legal jurisdiction encompasses a patch of ocean extending 3 miles outside our harbor, and south to roughly the south jetty and north to about the high school.

However, figure that for any non-urgent call to us for a tow within a 5 mile radius of the harbor mouth we'll get underway to assist. Beyond that, the Coast Guard will pick it up. BUT, for any emergency call for assistance we will almost always respond if it's anywhere between Pt. Estero and Pt. Buchon and out 8 or so miles. If we have "backup" boats and personnel to cover Morro Bay proper, we'll go. And in extreme circumstances we'll go even further, such as when the boat BBQ had the whale broach on top of her we were out all night long, at times off of Pismo Beach. I've gone to Cambria on other emergency calls. Between us and the Coast Guard, we pretty much race eachother to any emergency call within a half-hour run. We don't sit around figuring out whose call it is - we just go.

SALMON FLESH COLOR

This may seem a little technical but what the hell. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing !

Carotenoid pigments are what give all our pretty fishes their good looks. It seem there are about 600 of them that create the varity of colors in our favorite critters - FISH .

There are two in particular that give salmon flesh their red/pink/orange color. Astaxanthin (pinkish)and Canthaxanthin (orangish) with astaxanthin being the primary one for salmon. It also gives the color to shrimp, krill, lobster and etc. It is produced by ocean plants and algae which the krill eat and turn pink and then the salmon eat the krill and turn pink and we eat the salmon and turn ??
Fish farmers have been accused of dying salmon- not true, they just add astaxanthin to their food.

Fished PSL today in the lil' tin boat. Was fishing at the red light by 6 a.m. Trolled around for 4 hours for nada...not even a knockdown. 20+ other boats in the area, only heard of 10 or so fish caught, all of which were of the 24" variety. Saw nice bait balls, but the fish didn't want to play like yesterday.
Came inside and got a 1/4 scoop on nice chovies from Deke (called him on the cell phone and he came right out to give us bait:-). Worked some inside halibut spots for only one brown marlin. It pulled pretty good, but I busted it off before we could sink a gaff into it:-)
As per flesh color; the more finbait they eat the whiter the meat. The more crusteceans they eat (e.g. krill, shrimp, etc.) the reder the meat. That is why sockeye salmon meat is so dark red, they are primarily filter feeders of krill and other plankton.
As per Mr. Lingcod, if you are a marine biologist, how can you possibly be holding a lingcod up by its gills just to gets its picture...especially when it is a dink! That fish is as good as dead. Your business may do better if you quit posting on this site, you are quickly loosing credibility. If you'd like to know how to release a lingcod unharmed send me an email.
best fishes,

Hey "Mr. Lingcod",

That ling you are holding up in the picture definitely doesn't look legal-sized to me, so why are your fingers in its gills? Thats like holding you up by your lung tissue to take a picture of you. We all catch short fish, but if you are serious about the future of your business and our beloved fish resource, perhaps you should dig deep in your marine biology background and refresh yourself on how to release fish unharmed. I have to say I sort of agree with the Sissy about advertisement of business on this site... but I guess that is pretty much Harrell's call as site administrator. That being said, I am curious as to if you have the proper insurance to take people out on the ocean to fish in kayaks. A wavier of liability isn't worth the paper it's printed on, so you had better be sure about your coverage. I know as a former business owner that insurance for your type of activity is very pricey, which makes me even more curious as to if you have it. If you are above-board and totally legit, then my hat is off to you.

Meanwhile, I am planning to do an overnighter to points north for rockfish soon, spending the night in San Simeon. Also, I am game for an albie trip as well when things look right. Better searching with more boats, I think.

Sissy,Eric, et al:

My 2 cents on the DSC;

I have one and they work great ! Anyone with a DSC receiver within VHF range of a distress signal will receive it, hear an audible alarm and the position will be posted on the radio screen and your GPS chart if so connected. The DSC radios have other great features also ie; you can request a position from your buddy's boat or send yours, you can change the channel on your buddy's radio and talk on a "secret" channel without any prior announcement. I don't think they are much more expensive than any other good radio. Not difficult to install. I have a Standard Horizon DSC and GPS and they has worked great for two seasons now.

I haven't been out recently, but I thought I'd revisit the subject of salmon meat color: an aquaintance of mine has caught both pink meated salmon and white meated salmon on the same set. Last year there was speculation that meat color was related to kreel, perhaps it is genetic. Any thoughts?

Fished out of Morro Bay today and got limits (4 fish). They came between 140-180 feet of water between the yello buoy and 10E. They were all caught down 75-85 feet on green crocs. Two were nice, 12-15 pounds and were bright pink when cleaned. The other two were 8 pounds but dull pink in color. Great ocean. Lots of whales and wild life.

Blackie:

We've ticketed plenty of the squatters, and towed several of them off too. They just keep coming. And I'll admit that we (Harbor Patrol) probably aren't as hard core on the enforcement as we could be. Truth is, we put more of our time, energy, and resources into the boater assist and emergency response ends of the operation. That's how we've prioritized it, how we believe that the community and boaters want it, but one of the results is that our leniency gets taken advantage of.

As to pay to park, yes, your taxes paid for the construction of the launch ramp, parking lot there, fish cleaning station, and restrooms (almost exclusively fuel dock gas taxes - NOT gas station fuel tax. So if you're filling your boat up at the roadside gas stations you are NOT paying into the boating infrastructure system via the Dept. of Boating & Waterways and you HAVEN'T paid for our launch ramp). BUT, the ongoing upkeep and maintenance of these facilities is paid for by our department, which is funded about 90% by the leases on the waterfront, and 10% by slip and mooring fees. We get no property taxes, no sales taxes, no transient occupancy taxes (hotel "bed" tax).

As for the fish cleaning station, the vast majority of days it is totally adequate in size. While I agree that during good salmon and albacore bites it gets crowded, or during holiday weekends like this one, it doesn't make too much economic sense to build a giant facility that can handle every big weekend. Unless you want to pay $20/day to park instead of $5 or $10 like I would see as adequate. Haha!

The MBPD could start by issuing tickets to the SQUATTERS ,then post notice if they stay TOW them off. As to the pay to park, did not the tax dollars build the ramp and mantain, also why we are bitching they need to biuld more fish cleaning stations, Four just doesn,t get it at this time of year.

Saturday was a great day for kayak fishing in Shell Beach! Due to the small surf some big fish have moved cose to shore. We caught two nice lings and 22 other fish! The water was clear and we saw a bunch of dolphin and whales. Come join the fun and be in and out of the water in 3 hours with a ton of fish! We now have a nice display at Central Coast Kayaks. Come buy and have some fun!kayak fishing update

Plan B:

Ah, the old "we're not camping" rv-ers. One of the banes of my existence. If it's a lone RV in a long trailer stall, then they shouldn't be there at all. If it's an RV with a boat attached, they are OK so long as they don't camp. Which is what they always tell us they're not doing. Problem is, we're only on duty during daylight, so we as a Harbor Patrol have no way to bust them after 10pm, which is when "camping" technically starts.

So, we'll ask the MBPD to try and bust them at night. Some times they'll try, some times they don't. Unfortunately, it's pretty much up to them. The other problem is that these guys are generally pretty crafty, and when the PD comes knocking after 10pm, they're in bed lights off, and won't answer the door. Then, believe it or not, the PD can't do much. They really can't bust down the door.

I've asked my crew to remind the RV's that it's no camping, and to run off any lone RVs without boats completely. And we'll also request the PD to give the lot some more attention and try and catch some of them after 10pm.

Between the RVs and the guys that leave their truck-less trailers there like it is their own personal storage lot, we get pretty frustrated since we have to prioritize our time, and chasing off squatters is simply a pain in the a** and a big waste of our time. That said, we'll see what we can do. Personally, I think that the only permanent solution will be to charge for parking. I think that we are about the only ramp left on the California coast that is free. Maybe I'm wrong, and I hate to see that change, but I don't know how else to solve the problems without dedicating one of our guys to the lot virtually all day. Thanks for your patience.

resisted the temptation to fish salmon today and, instead, fished solo hard today for halibut with the live stuff from matt...looked at all the spots from pt estero to south cayucos for three legals. also picked up a 14 lb ling cod over some structure...saw a nice bait ball at the 10e on the way in so i dropped a flasher/hooch in for a minute and came up with a 17.5 salmon.lots of chatter on the radio saying the salmon bite picked up somewhat in the afternoon... hey eric is that a parking lot for boat launch users or a new RV CAMPSITE next to the ramp??

Fished out of PSL today. Intended to fish out of the Avocation. Got to PSL last night, 1st in line:-) The launch opened at 5:15! Slung the boat in the water and it wouldn't start. Tried to start it for about 10 minutes (just got it out of the shop:-(. Then the ignition breaks! The key just began to turn indefinitely in the ignition!!! Put the boat back on the trailer...head back to my house and change out for the skiff.
Back on the water and fishing by 8 a.m. Brought 5 to the boat, landed 3, all were 24" fish. Hooked all 5 fish on purple haze hoochie, red hot spot down 100-110 on the wire in 130' feet of water SE of the Red Light. LOts of fish landed today, but did not hear of one over 24". Flat and greasy calm until about 1 pm when a little wind came up.
Probably be trying it again tomorrow if the weather will let the little boat out again...if not I'll try halibut on the inside.
lat,
steve (formerly Avocation, currently Little Tin Boat)

John: to be absolutely honest with you, I don't know that much about the new DSC radios. We certainly aren't set up to receive the coded GPS signal, so I've never really looked into it. We'll get any vhf voice transmission though. The Coast Guard is set up for the DSC system, so I'll do a little research and get back.

John Costello: great way to go with the laminated card. Be sure to brief new people aboard about it and all your safety gear. If you get tossed over the side or are unconscious, everyone else on the boat should know what to do.

I've got to say that, in general, all you folks fishing out of MB and PSL are pretty squared away. The weather around here has generally weeded out the ill-prepared. Go down south and it's a circus some days.

eric,
good info...i keep laminated instructions taped next to my primary vhf just in case i'm unable to transmit..it all fits on a small card.

EMERGENCY RADIO TRANSMIT ON CH.16
1) mayday-mayday-mayday
2) location (GPS latitude/longtitude)
3) number of people on board
4) vessel name
5) location again

It is great to know that we have people like Eric and the CG here in case. Good job "Good Karma". I could hear Jeff and the CG, but could not hear Pete up in Cambria. Maybe I need a different radio? Just like the Boy Scouts "Be Prepared"
Eric, are the new DSC Vhf's worth the change? They supposedly report GPS location with the distress report when interfaced with the GPS.
Are we setup to recieve this info here in MB?
Thanks,

John

Great job Good Karma Jeff. No doubt you put some more of your boat's namesake into the bank. And glad Pete got back safe and sound. Both of you did a great job in bringing the situation home.

As a person in the rescue business, I'll use this opportunity to shed a little light on search and rescue ("SAR") operations and tips to help us and yourselves to bring urgent or emergency situations to a happy conclusion.

A: Be prepared! Be prepared to take care of yourself in the event of a dead engine/outdrive, fire, flooding, medical emergency, or onset of adverse weather. Obviously, some things can't be fixed or taken care of by yourself, and s*** happens. And know when "discretion is the better part of valor" and it's time to call for or accept help. We've all been there, and Pete did the right thing. If anyone wants any more information on this "be prepared" topic, we or the Coast Guard would be glad to help. Give us a call or stop by any time.

B: Be prepared to help others. This can be physically (a tow), literally (calling the Coast Guard in), or emotionally (standing by an emergency situation until the cavalry shows up). Again, right on Jeff.

C: When it comes time to call the Harbor Patrol or Coast Guard, there are 3 key bits of information, in order of importance below, that are critical to the success of a SAR mission.

1 - The first and foremost, more critical than anything, is LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! Without one (GPS coordinates AND a geographical description), we are sending our rescuers out into the dark. Maybe we'll find you with our other tools, maybe we won't. If you are in a boating emergency and you only have time to get 3 words out on the radio before jumping overboard, by all means make those words "mayday, your GPS latitude, and your GPS longitude." Location is the most important thing for a maritime rescuer to know. I can't emphasize this enough.

2 - The second critical bit of information for us SAR folks is your nature of distress. Are you on fire? Are you sinking? Are you lost? Is someone having a heart attack? You don't bring a knife to a gun fight. We need to know what to expect and what to bring, both equipment and personnel-wise.

3 - The third bit of critical information that we need to know is the total number of people on board ("POB"). If we know where you are, what the problem is, and all hell breaks loose before we get there, we need to know how many victims (and hopefully survivors) to look for. If there where two POBs and we get there and both are unconscious for whatever reason, we need to know whether or not to keep looking or to get the people we find to more advanced medical care now.

So when you or someone else is having an emergency, or getting close, you should be hearing us ask for, or you should be giving, those three bits of information in the order given. We want to get that info as quickly as possible because radio contact can be lost at any moment.

Again, great job guys, and safe boating.

Just wanted to say a quick thank you to Jeff on the Good Karma and everyone else who helped me out yesterday when I ran into mechanical trouble up off of Cambria. Coast Guard responded immediatley and were extremely helpful and courteous throughout the whole thing, won't ever forget how happy I was to see that orange boat speeding toward me. Again, appreciate the support and hope to see you out on the water once I get the boat up and running again.

Fished Wed. and thurs. this week with pretty good salmon action both days.It seemed like the hot action was early both days and of course i missed it by starting at 11:00 on Wed. and 10:30 on Thurs....I have been fishing my gear a little shallower(ie 30-50ft down the wire) this week.Interesting note...one fish we caught yesterday had "bright red" meat unlike the rest of the fish which were distinctly orange....jeff

Fished out of Morro today on our friends boat. Ended the day with 5 fish. 2 fish over 20lbs, 1 around 15, and the other 2 around 10. Sounded like we were the lucky boat as most had 0-2 fish. Most of our fish came around 170 feet just outside the rock and ranged from 70 feet to the bottom. There were some good bait balls that moved into the area around noon that went from top to bottom. Hopefully the big school moves back in since they have plenty of to eat.

Well Salty Doc made a trip to tuna water up by the Cape San Martin Bouy and found good bait sign and blue water that was 60.5 and trolled for 30 mi for nothing. Salmon was off today from yesterday's epic bite. We caught only 2 small ones. Some of the boats had zero by noon. We fished in the same area in front of the Rock in 100-130' of water. Lots of bait and fish marks.

Nice going Bob!!! Send some of those black-mouths down this way, Ventura. Fished the islands the other day and it was slow, even after making live squid. No trophies this trip. Water vis. was down to 6". Pretty bad when you can't see the other end of a piece of eel grass sitting in the water.

Hey guys, I've given dozens of interviews to the papers, and no matter how careful I have been with what I've said (and believe me I've learned the hard way), they invariably f*** it up. I've spoon-fed stories to the papers and, unfortunately, 99.9% of the time what gets printed will end up looking about 2% what you actually said. That's one of the reasons that I started the "harbor logs" in the Sun Bulletin; because they print exactly what I send them.

So I've learned that you can't believe what you read in the papers. The tragedy is that most Americans do, but I won't start that rant here. And TV is almost as bad. Your 10 word snippet will be so out of context with the story that you'll look like a complete moron.

So lighten up on Bob. And don't believe anything you read in the papers except for the classifieds (and the harbor logs!).

Carl,
Water color on that temp break at the CSM bouy is the cleanest offshore for sure. But after running 68 miles last year I dont think I want to push the boat to its limits again. Just a little out of my range. I predict we pull the fish before Deigo in numbers this year. Water color is already better than it was at any given time last season. Jeff at Terrafin is doing a great job with his Chloro charts, cant wait to see how accurate they are.

With all due respect Mel .."There's a trail of dead fish behind a sportfishing boat" That did not exactly put the recreational fishing community in a very good light.
I read the article more than a few times and completely understand the point Bob was trying to make. Just wish the point could have been made without sounding like we are scattering air filled bladders all over the water for seaguls to eat. Ocean is glass this morning .... would have been a nice morning for a run outside to find those first Tuna.
Will be out looking very very shortly.

Saw the article on our local Fish and Game wardens in todays Tribune.I was sorry to see that Bab Hather`s comments were construed to mean that all of the rockfish we recreational fisherman toss back have a virtual 100% mortality rate...This is exactly the kind of mis-information that is used to support anti-fishing arguments and fish stock rebuilding "conservation closures".We all need to be careful about how we conduct ourselves on the water and how we talk about our sport on land...jeff

Is this site for advertisement of personal businesses? What? Is this ebay? A boat for sale is one thing, but I think it is out of line to try to drum up business for personal gain.
Pay for a commercial site. Pay for one on this site. We could use the money for Right to Fish.
We all have kayak fished, we don't need to pay some one to teach us. Kayak fishing is one of the big reasons we almost lost the right to fish inside of 240'. Ask the upper F&G.

That being said, anyone heard anything about warm water? I want a tuna.

Just got back from Mozambique, Africa. I think I have found the best big game fishing spot in the world. They told me before I went out that it was a bad time of year, the currents, tides, moon & weather were all wrong. Because it was winter time, we would not be able to fish the banks nor would we get out to the "doggies"-dog toothed tuna-but we could fish behind the islands and they guaranteed me fish anyway. So I hired a car and drove four hours through the bush on some of the worst roads you could imagine passing several little grass hut villages to a smaller village called Cassanga.

After a night on an air mattress in the nicest house in the village, comparable to the storage shed in your back yard except it hadn’t been painted or cleaned since it was built 12 years ago, we set out for the harbor. The 30 year old 18’ cuddy cabin boat had twin out boards of which one ran pretty well and that is the only good thing it had going. Out of eight rod holders four worked. The Penn 6/0s probably never had the drags changed and the line looked just as old. I had seen the pictures at a hotel in the city of a 94 kilo wahoo o the hotel scale caught the week before and figured it was a scam but I had come this far and wasn’t turning back now. The tide was out and the boat was high and dry in the sand. This was intentional I was told so that it would be easier to load the tackle and fuel. Then about twenty villagers came down and pushed us out to the water.

Ten minutes later I had a twenty kilo “kingie” in the boat. We caught several more and decided to see how the fishing was outside of the bay! Immediately outside we saw crashing birds. As we drew closer I could see schools of 25 to 60 pound yellowfin, dorado, wahoo and other stuff crashing on several different bait schools. The wahoo were evident by the 20 to 30 foot peels of water that looked more like something a water skier would make than a fish. We filled the fish hold in the next two hours with mostly kings and yellowfin and many fish I have never seen before. We never did land a wahoo, they were huge and the tackle just would not allow it. Needless to say we lost more of everything than we caught and anything really big we never got to see. The big fish was a 60 pound yellow fin and we never went more than five miles from the harbor mouth.

There are real live aboard vessels that run out of Pemba with decent equipment and operated by South Africans. They go for about $400 a day, with a four party, four day minimum. I only got a few pictures because we were pretty busy. Stop by the store and I’ll show off a few.

Anyone for kayak fishing? I have started a kayak fishing class in Shell Beach and we are catching lots of fish!! I am a marine biologist and I also teach each client about fish movements, sharks, whales, seals, lobsters and ocean currents! I have caught over 1,000 fish off my kayak since 1995 and we often catch large lingcod, halibut and even a few sharks! Check out the new kayak fishing web at www.oceanexpeditions.biz or call 805-546-2620. Kayak fishing is quiet, exciting and we catch more fish than most of the boats do! Let me know when the boat is out of the shop Dave. I will make down as soon as your ready to go. Need to stick a couple WSB before the Albies show up.

Those water temps offshore are screaming Tunies!

Slabs is right...two of those perchies were personal bests...I have never seen 'em that big in person. I was buzzed on those big fish the rest of the day. Sandcrabs!
Fun times at Cayucos at the Casa with Dustin and crew.
Thanks so much for the hospitality and good eats.
Ready for the run to Santa Barbara? We'll go to Miguel...

Thanks for that added info Eric. Only one other time do I ever remember offshore winds lasting as long as they did on Sat morning. Stared and wondered all morning long why I left the boat on the trailer. Blew offshore till around 2pm. then swithced like Eric said and right when I thought the NW winds would kick it switched back offshore and blew hot air untill 6pm ..crazy stuff.

Thanks Mike (Blackie) for hanging out Sat ... you did not miss much Sat night. Swell made the perch fishing tough Sat with all the broken kelp and dirty water. Sunday morning it turned on for awhile with Dave (My Three Sons) taking the coveted first annual perch tourny award for 4 slabs before they took off back to SB.

FYI halibut. The halibut are in, but it is spotty right now. Caught 3 last weekend, but nothing today. Fished 6 a.m. to 1 pm for only 1 raked bait out of PSL. Got a sweet 1/4 scoop of med/large dines from Deke and drifted from the breakwater down to Pirates. Saw a few others fishing halibut as it was NASTY outside the breakwater. The beach weather was roasting...probably mid 90's. Thought I was in Baja!!! I'll be trying for halibut again on Wednesday. Hopefully it will be nice enough to run around the breakwater.
best fishes,
steve
