I have been contacted by a research group for DFG three times in the past several months (by phone) wanting to know how often I go out fishing, from where, for what , and now they want to have me fill out a log every time I go out with all this info to be mailed back to them every month. They also ask about lobsters. Anyone had these calls or any idea of how this might be used by DFG? I would hate to think that I am drilling holes into my own hull every time I answer their questions.
Eric, as far as the halibut go, we dive and fish for them evey year at PSL. I went out to look today and saw only one after three hours in the water. I would guess that they are starting to trickle in and should really get going in a few weeks. Best of luck! -

I am sadened beyond words at the passing of my friend Jody Giannini. I have just come in from a day fishing to pick up the paper and discover the news. The store will never be the same. Always there with friendly help, it was just a couple of days ago he called me to make sure I knew the parts I ordered were in.

OK. Looks like we're leaning heavily toward overnighting in PSL Sunday night. Will have my 2.5 year old daughter along so I'm not sure if we'll venture outside the harbor or not. Hopefully it will be flat calm and my daughter will be a trooper. She usually is. If not...

Good name , spent 12 years as a liveaboard in the delta at tower park , lots of good fishing.
Ok yea you can take them out on a virgs boat and you can expand your perch adventures to some other places , some of us guys have done real good north of the rock for the bigger perch.
I would say any where from the CAYUCOS pier to about sixth street would be a good bet, fish the last hour of the top of the tide , use them motor oil grubs , sliding sinker , go get em ,,, good luck , above all enjoy the special time with them kids

Spend a week each year in Oceano. Last year perch was great (last week in June) just south of ranger booth for dunes. any sugestions for better fishing? Have two 11 yr olds - want to put good memory in them. Headed there this weekend. Thanks in advance. |

The Fishing community lost a friend and all around great person,( Jody Giannini Jr. )he died at his home on June 13 after a battle with Cancer. Jody was the owner of Giannini's Marine service and a lifelong Morro Bay resident,I will miss him every time I walk into the shop...

Should'a been here yesterday seemd to be the words on the water today.
Went out of Morro Bay today and did ok considering how the radio sounded, and the game warden indicated when we came in (16 boats and 2 salmon counted prior to ours).
We were able to scratch up 3 keepers for 3 strikes, straight out in front of the rock in 185 Ft. out to 220 Ft. off Estreo Pt.
No real size with largest going 11# to a 23" taking the junior division.
All fish came on crocodiles.

Slip-wise, we are pretty much full, as most of our permanent slip holders (all commercial fishermen) are home. The few slips that aren't filled with the permanent guys are filled with others. But when you get the boat here, go ahead and call the Harbor Patrol on channel 12 and ask. You never know.
Option #2 would be to anchor out in our designated anchorage. It's at the north end of the permanently moored boats, immediately west of the channel line. Again, call the HP for directions. The first 5 days are free, so it's your most economical bet. And I guarantee you a great night's sleep with the sound of the water gurgling against the hull. Plus you get a little practice with your anchor gear, which is always a good thing for everybody in my book.
Option #3 would be to tie to our "floating dock." It's a 40 or so foot dock in our anchorage area. As of today, one side of it was wide open.
Option #4 would be to side-tie to another boat on one of our two commercial piers. One pier is right outside our office next to the Coast Guard. The other is next to the Great American Fish Co. restaurant on the water.
As for PSL, they have many guest moorings and a couple great places to anchor out too. And they'll have the gurgle-factor as well. Their Harbor Patrol is on channel 12 too.
But whatever you do, HAVE FUN with the family!!

Are there guest ties/moorings available in Morro or PSL? When I go up to Moss we usually get there the night before and get an end tie for $10. In Morro I have usually just spent the night in the boat on the trailer.
I'm taking my wife and young daughter out on the boat sun/monday. First time out for the little one. I don't really want to stay on a lake and troll for trout with the Farallon again but I do want to stay on the boat on the water with the family. |

Exploritory Tuna Trip: I tossed out the idea of putting together a small group of guys from this board to run outside the 1908 to have a little look around. I talked with Roger today from Patriot Sport Fishing and it looks like we will put something together but it will have to be mid week ie. Monday Or Tuesday. Looking to keep the boat load to a minimum (around a dozen or so guys) Cost will be kept down to cover fuel and the cost of the crew. This would be a great way to put some of the local private boat owners on the same boat for a day. If intersted shoot me an email, and like I said I will have more info on Monday. |

To answer your question about events which could affect chlorophyll concentrations... During the spring and early summer, while there is still significant wind and/or swell activity and the sun moves more overhead each day , there occurs a spring bloom of phytoplankton i.e. chlorophyll in the surface layers of the ocean in our region. The sun, as it "moves" farther north, penetrates deeper into the water column. Strong winds combined with swell activity increase the "depth of mixing", mixing nutrient-rich water from deeper in the water column into the "euphotic" or sun-lit zone. This is like adding fertilizer to a garden that has healthy plant populations and plenty of water, but a shortage of food. The result is a Spring bloom of algae and phytoplankton, which will show up on images like Terrafin as high chlorophyll concentrations. The good news is that these phytoplankton are the primary producers of energy for the rest of the food chain, and they are fairly quickly consumed by zooplankton. The water color will soon return to normal... maybe in as little as 1 week, but usually 2 weeks or so, and what is left is an abundance of zooplankton (shrimp, copepods, crab larvae, etc) meaning lots of life like birds, baitfish, etc... all the ingredients for albacore stew. Don't mean to spout off, but I earned a degree in Oceanography from Humboldt State and don't get to use it except in cases like this!
I will be ready to go whenever you good people on fisreports decide it's time to go looking. THe diablo forecast sounds really really promising!

Sorry to hear about the tough perch fishing Mike. Those fish have already finished dropping their live young from the fall spawn. Was not as wide open as a few weeks ago, but I did manage to pull a dozen or so working a little harder than normal. We are running outside for Salmon on Thursday and probably will run again on Saturday for either Salmon or Halibut.
For those that are still interested in an exploration run for the tuna, I called Port San Luis today. Will talk to Roger tomorrow and see what we can put together. I dont see that water moving in for another few weeks, so may have to support our local sport boats for our first run. John Rowley: I will be calling Virg's tomorrow to get prices for a charter with the guys from Fishreports.net on an exploritory. Usualy a crew trip, but thought we may be able to help each other out by taking the local Private Boat guys out for the first trip of the year. Lots of experience on this board .... could be a great way to put up some numbers for our local landings.

Picked up 2 salmon outside the rock this morning in about 190' and 65' down after hurling my breakfast in that confused crappy sea, nice red meat for the BBQ though. Went for the barn at 9:30.

went to the perch hole today took a couple of my fishing club members , I got a zero lots of salad in the water , one of the guys with me got two nice fish , the guy that lives in the little red house at the top of the stairs was fishing off the rocks, and caught 4 fish.
Lay down wind so we can get some of those fish with the long fins, saw a doc on the tube last night on tuna farming BLUEFINS what a trip, looks like the way of the future.

We all know that wind chop can create surface cooling that distorts the terrafin SSTs,
Do you know of any conditions which may effect upon the surface that would distort chlorophyll readings? Also, Dustin asked the question a couple of weeks ago about color designation of chlorophyll levels compared to last years homemade charts? If you have a quick answer I'd appreciate it.
As a side note, We still have plenty of room on the Baja trip to San Quintin in early July. Should be lots of fun. I'll try to add a few photos to the link at the top of the page during the next week or so.
Mark, you were right it was a head gasket, found degredation near the upper cylinder and a dreaded "hanging chad" blocking 90% of the water flow to the head. Motor runs good now. Thanks! |

Fished on Bushwacker Tom's boat today. Had limits of 4 fish by 7 just up from the yellow buoy in 185-190ft. Fish came from 70-100ft down. 2 on flasher/hoochie, 1 on watermelon croc, and 1 on bait.

Carl, The clean warm water is still 70+ miles from the rock. We will venture out if it pushes inside 50 ... until then its a waiting game. When the NW winds stop that water should warm up and move into range. |

Those perch have been a blast but its time to go find some flat ones for the dinner table. Still planning on trying to put together a charter if that water continues to stay off the 1908. If you guys are gonna go let me know, I fished more toward the pier D there was a wooden bench on the bluff above where i was catching the Perch, between two rocks also, fished yesterday on the KILLER/ Bs with three others caught a lot of big reds one keeper ling, weather was lumpy made the run to our honey hole in CAMBRIA,
was off the water by 1400 when it got real snotty.
There were quite a few Salmon boats out , but don,t know how they did.

Sorry John Roley, I just came to the wrong conclusion. Of course they didn't lay on the decks in the sun.
I must have got there after they were laid out on the deck. I stand corrected. There were still some put in car trunks and some laying out in the sun on a flatbed. I know Virge's would not let them lay. I should have thought about it more.

The salmon on Virg's boat did not lay on the hot deck for hours. They were taken out of the bait tank from regular cold sea water washes. When the boat got in they were laid on deck for a few minutes so they could sort out the fish who they belonged to. Hopefully some of the people got them on ice soon. |

Starter problems on Good Karma forced me to haul out for a few days,so I fished rockcod on the princess from virg`s last sunday.We fished swimbaits,jigs,and frozen squid, just north of villa creek in 230-240 for wide open action on big reds,white bellies,starries,and a few keeper lings.We had easy limits for 25 people in 2-3 hrs.Most interesting was three commercial salmon trollers looking real busy repeatedly boxing the same area.I`ve been kind of lazy this season and have not ventured far from the Rock in search of salmon...but will definitely check this area out later in the week when I get the starter issue resolved.If anyone ventures up that way sooner,please post results |

Fair looking bait at Virge's. Everyone on the salmon boat limitted out. Water will be rougher tomorrow, but the bite is hot. Can't believe all those salmon laid on the hot deck all those hours. Then people were just putting them into their trunks and going for lunch or something...
One guy just laid them on his flatbead and went off somewhere. What a waste.
One passenger said he was catching at less than 50'.
Anyone going outside this weekend?

The salmon bite was good today. I had to get off the water early but before we got one Harrell had at least four and others were doing about the same in 190 feet of water off the Rock.

Got tired of getting SH&*T for fishing the conventional, so had to pick up the light stuff. Same spot .... right and left side of that rock produced.
There are some guys running Friday offshore if the weather holds. I cant run until I get into the new house and get the boat situated. Let me know whats up for the week.
2 1/2 hour drive for 3lb Perch ...well not sure if I would call that desperate, but crazy maybe!

Was over at the Perch hole in Cayucos again yesterday for about 4 hours. Started slow then n the incoming turned on for about an hour and a half. Fished 4lb test stuff on a micro Fenwick and was a blast on the slab BSP. Pulled a SandShark (Angle Shark) that was hooked in the tail. Took a good 20 min on the light gear. About a dozen BSP and the one shark, all released. Wind was calm yesterday until about 3pm ..... heard the Salmon bite was good as well.

Must have been good salmon fishing today (Sunday). I was down at Virge's checking on bait (maybe tomorrow) and the salmon boat came back early with limits all around. (According to a passenger I spoke with.) He said they were using big green dodgers, but that is all he knew about it. Billy Boy will try again tonight for bait. Too rough to put the nets out during the day, they said. Bait is supposed to run $25/scoop, $8/1/4 scoop. I remember when it was $5/scoop. Guess that shows how old I am.

I found your fishing hole today , went over to your old digs and went north to all the rocks , caught the poop out of the big barred perch brought home my limit of them big dudes 3# changed my gear over to the fresh water spinning and the same setup you turned me on to , man they fight good on the light gear, water was rough but the wet suit makes it easy to fish those HOLES.
Hope the weather lays down so we can get after those longfins .

John; Lets see if I understand what you are saying; if I have a commercial license (which I don't) for a small boat that I fish both sport and commercial on I must have the permit before I can even fish sport. Is that correct? |

one more thing,...the permit is required by federal law...it clearly states that commercial vessels cannot fish untill they have the permit...these days, in commercial fishing, thumbing your nose to the feds is not an option....that is if you want to keep fishing |

some guys got it in the mail, i didn't...i had to fax in my info and i received my permit about 10 days later...more friggin paperwork! |
