If any one knows the weather that far in advance I would concider them a god. But I think there will be more of the same. lots of weather out there on the pacific both west and north west with highs and lows in the wrong places for a full day of fishing. |

Fished Morro Bay this morning and ended up with 4 keepers (#6,9,9 15) and one released silver. Hits were between 60-120 feet down in 150 feet of water on green hoochie and green croc. Not many boats in the morning but more by mid-day. Most hits for us were between 9:30-10:30. |

Fished PSL today in the skiff. Launched at 5:30 and headed out for salmon. Fished until 8 for not 1 knockdown. Came inside and got a 1/4 scoop of sweet large chovies from deke. Not one bait rolled all day!!! Fished all the usual spots for 2 keeper halibut and 5 shorts. Lots of buts around right now. Fishing again tomorrow. Give a call on 68 if you are out. Since someone asked a few days back about guns on boats, here is the skinny as I know it: According to the Coast Guard, as long as the gun is a State and Federally legal one, and as long as it's owner is legal to posess it, any such gun is allowed aboard a vessel. And it can be unloaded, or it CAN be loaded. And that is the same at the State and Local level. Unlike in a vehicle where the weapon must be unloaded, locked, and seperate from the ammunition, a vessel is more like your house where, if you want, you can leave a loaded weapon laying around. But, just like at home, if you leave a loaded weapon laying around and someone (a kid for example) gets hurt or killed by accident because of it, you'll be on the hook for it. As for the serialized ammo issue, one of our Senators, Diane Feinstein, I'm told has (and exercises) a permit to carry a concealed weapon. So she would be a good one to direct your concerns to as she may be sympathetic. Eric Endersby Chief Harbor Patrol Officer MB Harbor Patrol |

For those of you heading to Mexico to fish. I just got back from Loreto and the fishing was slow. The Dorado where out to far with the wind (45 miles) but the sails and stripes where about 5-10 past the islands. They where well fed and would only take live mackarel occasionaly. I would try making squid half way between the island and land and slow trolling that. Good luck. |

George, Concerning Fred Archers Book on shark fishing. I believe he is still down in Cabo running his charter business so the easiest way to contact him is by going to allcoastsportfishing.com and post your question on the shark or billfish boards. He answers there often and will give you an address to send money to if your interested. Also look on ebay ... they pop up on there every now and then as well. D |

SST/Weather Well we got good quality SST shots yesterday but I really don't like what they show. It is looking like a repeat of last year ! Our warm water/break is out 65-70 nm and it is on the beach in Oregon. Monterey has a plume of clean warm water about 40 miles but the best looking water up there is just below the Guide at about 70 miles. We have a good clean warm break on the 35:00 line a little outside of the 122:00 line. It's still early so things can change. Lets hope they do. The forecast still shows another week of this wind. Another thing on threshers; if you catch one and keep it be sure and clean it, remove the head and tail before even bringing it in the boat.Ice it down if you want good quality meat. One more thing..if you bring a tail hooked thresher to the boat with a Rapala in it's tail use EXTREME CAUTION OR YOU MAY WIND UP WEARING A RAPALA ALL THE WAY TO THE HOSPITAL !! |

Sissy, This may be my last post regarding firearms, as this isn't really the topic for this forum and gun laws really p me off to the point where I can't really convey my thoughts. I never carry any firearms on the boat. I don't see a need for it. However, I don't see a problem with doing so if you feel that is necessary. The 2000 round thing was from an assault weapons ban thing in the 90's, that was a total count of all ammo possesed. I think it also limited mag capasity to less than 10 rounds. There's been lapses in various laws to allow imports of certain things here and there. I don't keep up with that stuff anymore. Fishing is better. Will be leaving for baja in the a.m. I'll post the results of the trip. later, sdm |

Ammunition Registration SB 357 (Dunn, D – Santa Ana) would require the bullet in each round of handgun ammunition or box of handgun bullets for reloading to have a serial number that is registered to the ammunition or bullet buyer at the time of purchase. The idea is to trace bullets found at a crime scene back to the buyer which could in turn lead to the buyer being charged with a crime. Federal crime statistics show that approximately 90% of handguns used in crime are stolen. If SB 357 passes, most serialized ammunition used in crimes will no doubt also be stolen. It would be easy for criminals to avoid the provisions of this bill. Ammunition manufacturers report that they cannot incorporate putting serial numbers on bullets into their existing manufacturing process and that it would be prohibitively costly to even try. If SB 357 passes, ammo manufacturers state they will have no other prudent business choice but to abandon the sale of handgun ammunition in California. If SB 357 passes, it will without doubt be expanded later to also include rifle and shotgun ammunition! This bill is currently in the State Assembly. All SCI members should immediately contact their own district Assembly Member as well as other Assembly Members to ask them to vote “NO” when SB 357 is presented for hearings!!! Cartridge Case Microstamping AB 352 (Koretz, D – W. Hollywood) would require that semiautomatic handguns microscopically stamp, at the time of firing, information on cartridge cases that would identify the handguns make, model, and serial number so that it could be traced to the handguns registered owner. As in the case of SB 357 (ammunition serialization), AB 352 would be easy for criminals to circumvent. It is mostly the owners of stolen handguns and people who leave empty cartridges cases on the ground or at the shooting ranges who would be affected. This bill is also currently in the State Assembly and SCI members should also immediately contact Assembly Members to strongly oppose it!!! Removal of Handgun Ammunition from Store Shelves AB 996 (Ridley-Thomas, D – Los Angeles) would require that ammunition retailers not place handgun ammunition on store shelves where customers can have access to it. Instead, customers would have to find a store clerk that would go to a secure area to obtain it for them upon their request. This essentially would bring an end to comparison shopping, and the additional handling and storage requirements would result in higher prices! AB 996 is in the State Senate. SCI members should contact their own district Senator and other Senators and ask them to vote “NO”!!! If you have comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact Kathy Lynch or Angie Logsdon at the following information: Lynch & Associates 1127 11th Street, Ste 610 Sacramento, CA 95814 Tel: (916) 443-0202 Fax: (916) 443-7353 Website: www.lynchassoc.com PLEASE NOTE NEW EMAIL ADDRESS (lynch@pdqnet.com) " In the Crosshairs" is a free e-mail service to SCI members. 7-2-05 --- Port San Luis First time user and I want to thank those that offered great info on this site. Always good when someone offers a secret site or good location and what to use. THANKS! Saturday 2nd was a great morning - Water was calm, air was warm. Hit the walls just to the north of the main pier without much luck, trolled up to the big rock at the end of the rock sea wall in 10 ft of water using live chovies. Started hitting flatties in 8 to 12 foot water range but only 1 good keeper out of 9 in the boat. Hit 7 nice Jack's on gold hook with green yarn then headed South to the oil pier. Cruised up to Fishermans Beach then drifted back to pier. Landed 6 more flatties in 4-10 foot of water with one nice keeper at 34 inches. Got a hookup with what we think was a thresher in 4 foot water but only 12# test - 15 minute fight chasing it with the boat then back out of the kelp patch but it broke free. Been nice to at least see it! Try again in 2 weeks. Thanks All For The Great Info.. |

Don't put the salmon gear away yet, because the big fish wanted to play today.Left the harbor at 10:45 and headed southwest out to 200 feet before we put the gear in.The marks all appeared deep so we put a hoochie/flasher @150ft and a watermelon apex @120ft.The hoochie got bit first and ended up in a deep 20 plus minute tug of war before we saw color on a huge salmon which then spit the lure on a series of leaps. We then trolled back through the same spot for a double hookup from which I landed a FAT #23+ lb fish on the apex.We had 1 more knockdown on the deep rigger that did not stick and called it at 1:00.I'll be there on Sat. fishing deep...jeff |

The visible satellite shows that the area west of Morro Bay and north is clear so we should have some Terrafin shots tonight or tomorrow. At least we can see what the water looks like even if we can't get out there. |

Local threshers; Dustin is right all our local threshers are juveniles. When there are big schools of anchovies from Pismo to Pt. Sal in less than 100 feet then our area becomes a nursery for the pups. We have hooked and landed several on salmon gear but have lost a lot more. All my salmon reels are backed up with 300-400 yds of spectra which gives me time to clear the salmon gear and chase after them. When we target them it is usually with CD 18 Rapalas trolled at 20-30 ft deep at 4-5 mph. Threshers slap the bait with their tail first and 9 out of ten will be tail hooked which means you are in for a fun ride ! With rapalas I have never found it necessary to use wire. You can also slow troll mackeral but will need a short wire leader. Fred Archer has written a book on how to catch them which I recommend if you want to seriously fish for them. They seem to prefer white lures. In recent years they seem to stay below pt Conception so probably the best shot is out of Santa Barbara and troll north outside the kelp beds. |

Many reports lately of Threshers up around Monterey and Moss ... Tail slapped flashers and quick hook-ups only to be spooled on too small of gear. Harrell I assume most of our local Threshers are juvinile fish (less than 150lbs) I would still be trolling bait-o-matics, yozuris, with like a 12T or even larger reel, steel leader ... never hooked one but seen many jump around the coke plant area in the past. Last weekend twice while salmon fishing off Morro Bay, one (1) on Sat. and one (1) on Sunday, I was hit and upon retrieving my line found that I was cut-off leaving about 4-8 inches of my leader behind the flasher, losing a green apex one day and the other day a green hoochie. I have been told this probably was a thresher shark that hit. If so, is there anyone out there who has experience and success in fishing specifically for threshers? |

OK, I'm confused. The way I understand the regs, is that you CAN NOT filet Cabezon on a boat but you can filet Lincod if the filet is a minimum of 16 inches in length and each filet bears intact a one-inch square patch of skin. How can you tell the difference between an Cabezon skin and Lingcod skin if all you have is the filet? Aren't they very similar? Isn't the difference in the head and teeth, or lack thereof? |

Wind, Wind and more wind !! Just checked the computer models and it is forecast to blow (on the outside) for at least another week.We could have albacore right out here at 20 miles and never know it. They were at 90 miles straight out before the wind came back up so who knows where they are now. Pretty sure the water is clean at 20 miles or less which makes it even more frustrating ! Gentlemen, You need to read between the lines of SB357. If it passes it is very, very, unlikely that any ammo manufacturer will willingly comply with the law hence, effectively eliminating any flow of "legal" ammo into this fine state. It will be a Felony to possess non-serialized ammo so handloading is out of the question. Our legislators will have effectively eliminated our ability to legally shoot a firearm. This is serious business. What next.....serializing every lead sinker and swimbait? Maybe just closing our local fishery? |

Alaska was awsome, but we did not fish. Salmon were plentiful and we are planning a return trip. Guns: I have been wondering what the laws were relating to carrying a firearm on board a vessel? Laws affecting our rights have changed since the Homeland Security Act. Anyone know what the skinny is on this? And, is the 2000 round limit for each caliber or gauge of gun owned or the total rounds we may possess? John |

Jack, Don't worry about the serial # crap on ammo ,Stockpile now before it happens. I had to register with doj a few years ago for ar15's and such and never had an issue with them. Currently if you posses more than 2000 rounds of ammo, your guilty of a crime. Got more into fishing to avoid regulations on my recreation, Why???????????? |

Beware of a new fishing regulation. A friend cleaned some rockfish on his boat leaving the one square in. of skin on each fillet. His buddy cleaned a cabezon. My friend recieved a ticket for not leaving all the skin on which was a $150 fine and now for any fishing violation you have to go to jail and be finger printed and photographed and registered. His friend got cited for cleaning the cabezon which is now a $400 fine. The DFG is only required to give 10 days notice before any law change. The judge was asked what constituted a public notice and he couldn't answer. I guess only folks that have access to a computer can comply with the law. Friends, you need to get involved if you are to protect your right to fish. CCFCC is going to task on this one. This MLPA movement is another threat that needs public attention. Thanks Jack for the heads up on the ammo law. Bob Hather |

I know this is a fishing board but there is legislation that some of us should be very concerned about. It is SB357, this legislation that would require serial numbers to be printed on the bullets and cases of handgun ammunition. This information would have to be unique to each box and registered at the time of purchase. If you carry the unmarked ammunition it would be a crime. This has already passed by a vote of 5-2 in the Assembly Safety Committee. You should contact your State Assemblyman and tell him you appose this. The only number I have is for Juan Arambula at 916 319-2031 |

Fished Morro Sunday from 6-4:00. Slow morning. By mid-day, heard of 4 fish caught in 140 feet of water. Ran over there and had two hook ups but lost both. The other boat I was running with stayed a little longer and caught 3 between 4-5 pm. Definately a later bite than normal. The whale show is impressive but maybe a little too impressive. We had a humpback whale completely jump out of the water no more than 20 feet off our stern. We counted his freckles on the way by. Exciting but way to close. |

Fished early Sunday July 3rd for salmon out of Morro Bay, action very slow, only a few hits with no fish boated. The real action was the feed/whale/seal show. Have never seen so many humpbacks in one place especially here. Whales diving, breeching, spouting everywhere. Went rock fishing at Buchon for three easy limits all nice reds, olives, blues, etc. Ocean conditions perfect.- Happy 4th of July.. Gerard |

Three of us fished Moss 2 miles south of the stacks for a wide open bite. Had a triple twice in an hour, and got three fish one time and two another. Off the water by 8:00 with fish to 19 lbs, gutted. Bayside marine website doesn't talk too much about Moss because of all the action still in SC. |

finally off the injured reserve list to fish today.crew had some problems so i was solo. had two big salmon to the net in the morning tide swing but farmed both of them. not so bad if you don't see em and they pop off...but when there right there, after all these years, it still stings...the radio was quiet at about 11 so i got up to the point to make some halibut drifts for nada, nice hook baits from matt though..then made some drifts for a couple reds in 80'. i wanted to have a shot at the afternoon tide swing so i got back down in front of the rock in 180' and found a nice current break. 15 minutes later i was done. salmon went 12 and 13lbs. |

There are still a few salmon locally with some limits of mostly smaller fish. Moss landing is wide open on 14-25 salmon. Bob |

Fished for Rock-fish out of Morro this morning for early limits by 10:00 A.M. Made a move back to the rock and trolled for a double hook up on the smaller salmon. The two fish were 7 and 9 lbs and caught in 200 feet of water down 150 feet on the wire. Green croc and white hoochie. Bait balls were big and numerous. Great weather. |

Nice fish Bob!!!!....I love this website.I was sitting in my SLO office this morning and saw Cubano,s early posting about the salmon bite.I got out on the water by 2;00pm,and quit at 4:30 with 1 respectable king in the box and one heartbreak at the net.I also tossed back 2 identical #8 lb silvers. All the action for me was in the deeper water on the watrmelon Apex.Other boats caught fish w/ green croc's in that same 165-180ft area everybody has been fishing...jeff |

Just got in from fishing off the Rock, at about 8:30am the bite was on. My buddy and I put 2 fish in the boat, within 10 minutes then hooked up again twice within another 15 minutes, loss both. Unfortunately, had to return for business conference at the office by 10:00am SHARP! Bummer!! Anyway, fish were in about 170 ft, and fishing with black/white stripe and green hoochie what they hit on. Will be back out, by noon- |

I just got back from two days of fishing for salmon out of Santa Cruz. I took my wife and daughter. Easy limits of slugs to 30 lbs. The Soquel Hole is the hot spot right now. The water is warming up so it won't last long. Very nice facilities in Santa Cruz. |

Looks like the wind will be back up saturday and according to the UCAR models will be blowing all next week. We should get some temp/ clorophyll shots when the marine layer is blown away. It will certainly be worth checking that close water when the wind lays down, in the meantime stay close for salmon, rockfish and halibut ! |

We have some of the cleanest bluest water on the coastline right now pushed all the way to where the old PSL bouy was located. With the three boats that ran all the way to the 1908 and north without any luck its not probable ..but still possible that those fish are here, just not in numbers. Over the weekend if the weather is nice may want to bump out 20 miles and take a look at the slight temp break around the old bouy location. Worth a boat ride to 20 anyway. Dustin |

All caught fishing the motor oil grubs on fresh water spinning gear on the incoming tide . Lots of salad in the water got to pick your spots, and move up and down the beach , fish the rock pockets theres always a hole alongside them. May see you on the water SAT if the weather holds , have company and a full boat for the weekend . Goodluck this weekend on then fish. Blackie/Killer/B,s |

Harrell: No worries on posting my letter. The Morro Bay Commercial Fisherrman's Organization also sent one, so any more from organized groups (CCFCC, Cambria Fishing Club, PSL Fisherman's Org. are you reading this?) will help. But individual letters are needed too. Every little bit will help. Do you work with John or at Diablo? Just curious how you got ahold of my letter so fast. I just emailed it this morning to John! The salmon bite at Moss Landing was great. We had 6 quality fish by 9:30 and lost a few more to sealions and our own mistakes. Paul and Carl Domingos were also up there and they bagged a 70lb thresher along with 7 quality fish. The water temp up there was 60. I heard some guys albacore fishing at 28 mi but don't know if they were successful. |

WE saw a lot of surface bait on the way down to the coke plant but no bait balls. We were inside 70 ft so don't know what might have been out a little deeper. I did troll a little for threshers but with no bait balls there was no action. We had really great action on threshers a few years back but nothing much lately. June 29, 2005 Eric, I took the liberty of posting you letter to John so that a bunch of us fishermen could send similar letters to John to help persuade PG&E to make their weather observations available to us via the internet. John Lindsey PG&E Diablo Canyon Ocean Lab Bldg. 440 Avila Beach, CA 93424-0056 RE: DIABLO CANYON WEATHER DATA Mr. Lindsey: It is our understanding that PG&E is considering making its Diablo Canyon terrestrial weather observation data available to the public via the internet. As a coastal rescue, response, and public safety agency, the Morro Bay Harbor Department fully supports this effort. In recent years the number of real-time weather reporting sources has decreased, most recently with the removal of the Point San Luis weather buoy and the Piedras Blancas weather station. These sources were vital to weather forecasters to accurately predict weather events and ground-truth their predictions. In addition, commercial and recreational boaters alike have come to rely on data sources such as these to make their own planning and safety decisions regarding venturing out to sea. And finally, data from these sources is critically important to agencies such as the Morro Bay and Port San Luis Harbor Patrols and the US Coast Guard to assist boaters in distress with regard to real-time and on-scene weather information for search-and-rescue planning and execution. To these ends, the addition of the Diablo Canyon terrestrial weather observation data to the already available (and very useful) Diablo wave-rider data would help stitch back together a comprehensive picture of our local marine weather. We applaud PG&Es efforts to make public this data, and hope that they come to fruition. Please dont hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Faithfully, Eric Endersby Chief Harbor Patrol Officer |

Any good collection of bait Harrell around the coke plant area? Thinking of possibly targeting Threshers along that stretch this season. And has anyone heard or seen the squid boats around Morro yet? Last year there was a good collection of squid up around San Simeon. Time to start thinking WhiteSeaBass as well |

Went out of PSL today to check out the area off the coke plant. 60 degee temp but not very clean, about 6 ft visibility. Did scratch up one 10 lb halibut for two hours trolling. Then we went to Pt. Sal for some nice lings, cabazon, reds and etc, but we stayed too long and had to beat our way back to port in 20 + wind and waves!! Pretty nasty ! |

Fished this morning out of MB for zero salmon. If you can trust the radio, only 2 salmon were caught out in front.I did hook 1 thresher shark approx #200lb which nabbed my croc/flasher combo and made a mess of my starboard downrigger cable....While tying up in the harbor I saw a commercial boat offloading 91(ninty one) salmon. He was sort of vague(as the commercial guys tend to be)but did offer that he caught them yesterday between the Cambria Motels and the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse...Unless someone finds the longfins this week I plan to look for the salmon up near Cambria on Sat..jeff |

Did anybody make a run to the Donut or 1908 yesterday? We saw a couple of the "Big Boyz" with "Big Toys" that were still out when we left MB at about 5pm and given the weather conditions it would have been a pleasant trip out. |

Arrrghh, Thieves!! That's a darned shame, Bill. I'll certainly keep an eye out for that kicker. On a better note....what a day we had today!! The skipper didn't have the new downriggers completely installed so we put in at Morro Bay for a rockfish run. 4 sweet "legal" Lings, some huge Olives, a nice big Cabezon by late morning and filled in with a couple big Reds and topped it off with some big Blues after we shook off the little guys all day! The weather was just phenomenol as we're so used to being chased off by 11:00, there was no reason to come in! We stayed out till nearly 4:00 pm looking for our last two big fish to complete our limits. On the way in we metered and saw tons of bait and the Salmon were cruising 60-70' in 100-110 feet of water about 1.5 miles from the Rock. Attempted a little mooching and got bit but farmed it early in the fight. Gave up and headed in to start the clean up process. What a blast!! |
