George, Even if you go out with other boats, it's better to have one or 2 along with you. If only to cut the cost of bait & fuel. |

Michael, thanks for the added fishing trivia answer regarding how the long fin name came to be.. So, in getting out for LFT's (man, that feels good to say and understand!), if not an imposition, I am up to joining any flotilla running out for that aim. This excursion will be my first time in my private boat. Past experience fishing for albies have all been on charter boats. Any other like-minded fishheads, reading this post who would not mind a first-timer in an accompanying boat to run out with let me know- For what it's worth I am located in Los Osos. |

Thanks Waverunner for the clarification. Funny me, I thought LFT= Looking for Tuna and the SST= super-sonic transport (oK, this one I missed by a few galaxies) I feel like a better fisherman already! Again, many thanks |

As you can tell from my profile and postings I am fairly new member to this BBS and I just love it! Now with that said, I am doing my best to figure out some of the abbreviations and slang used regularly. I apologize for my ignorance, however two such abbreviations have me stumped, and would appreciate someone enlightening me to the meaning of LFT and SST. That's all for the moment- |

Hey Blackie, Virges' didn't go out. Not enough signed up. They're looking to get 12 people for next Sunday. 200.00 per head. What I was told is this trip will be limited to the 12 signups only. Would make for some great fishin' if'n they run into any LTF's |

Friends: Went out for a few hours of salmon-trolling this morning. One small salmon and a few take-downs that did not stay buttoned. Kind of nasty on the water today. I think there are still a few salmon swimming around out there. Mel |

Fished PSL today with my wife in the Skiff. Fished inside until high tide for not one pick-up. Ran up the Pea Patch. Caught 1 25" ling, 1 17" cab, and 1 30" halibut. Had two other raked baits, with no other hook ups. Playing Hooky was in the area and caught 1 short. Sounded like the salmon guys did pretty good today, maybe 1 or 2 fish per boat. One guy mooched 1 up. Someone else caught a 20+ pounder. Gorgeous ocean today, barely a ripple until noon. best fishes, steve |

I'm the "little old lady from Pasadena" (also a local SLO guy). I have a really nice 12'4" Achilles inflatable boat for sale. Model SG-124, it was Achilles' premier model in 1992 when it sold for $3500. DuPont Hypalon fabric (the best), 5 air chambers including keel, aluminum floorboards and stringers, fiberglass transom w/ protective motor clamp plate, fold down locking oar system, lifelines, holdall fitting points, practical color combo: black w/ gray interior and red accents... the deluxe features are too many to list. Ship is airtight, all seams are perfect. Spent most of its life in covered storage on a funky trailer that's included. For complete info and pix email me: brohan@charter.net Powered by an absolutely cherry 25 hp 2 stroke Yamaha that has probably less than 40 hrs of freshwater Sierra lakes on it, this is a killer combo for any task or sport. Other accessories include launch wheels, a very cool outboard motor carrier that bolts to your pickups's bed, and more... All for less than $3000. 805.773.4370

Hi Guys; Looks like the word about how a CANARY and a red DIFFER/has not reached everyone, while cleaning our catch at the rack yesterday some fellow fisherman had 5 of them birds, the fish and game counter was there , he is not a cop so therfore he can not ticket, and these guys were lucky THIS time, MY point is this is what is going to shut us down early this year so I guess the work has not got out to everyone. Waverunner; Thanks again for the location. We just got the one fish but the F&G biologist said it was the biggest one that he checked today. We also trolled for halibut from the 10E to almost Cayucos in 60 ft of water for nada but we did get a twelve year old vermillion. (6lb) |

Gary, firearm registration can be done by any gun shop and some police departments will do it also. any pistol must be registered to have them in your possesion shotguns and rifles are not requiered to be registered. as far as shooting a shark goes i dont see any problem with it the info on firearm registration was atttained through the arroyo grande police department |

Fished Morro Bay today for 3 salmon, all 7-8 pounds. Lost 1 fish and had 2 other knockdowns. Found some bait in closer. Fish were caught between 60-80 feet down in 140-160 feet of water on Green and White Hootchies and Watermelon apex. Heard of a few other fish caught but not many. Maybe a later bite as I had to come in around 11:30. Ocean was flat with no wind at least through 11:30. |

Another gun issue and I appoligize for posting on the "fish forum" but I need some advice. I have an old .38 special that was handed down to me many years ago. It was my late uncles gun where he was a Guard at a nuclear lab and Armored Car driver prior to that. I have done nothing with the gun but considered taking it with me while shark fishing. I guess the first question would be; can you shoot a shark after it has been caught by hook and line? Second; since I have never registered the gun in my name, can I even have it in my possesion? Or should I just bring a ball bat and a sharp knife? |

I've had a Honda 20 as a kicker on my Farallon for about two years now. It's been a great set up...very reliable, never a problem (uh-oh...hope i just didn't jinx it!). I use it a bunch for salmon and bounce balling halibut. I got mine from Eric at Specialty Marine (not that big a deal because I live in Santa Barbara, but I understand it's a long drive from the Central Coast!). Anyway...Eric is a great guy...as honest and helpful a guy as you'll find. Dave My Three Sons |

A honda mechanic friend of mine said he wouldn't own a 4 stroke honda less than 30 HP. I don't remember the exact details but he said they came into the shop all the time where he worked on them and the problems were design flaws. I would suggest you do the leg-work. Check out www.comsumerreports.com and compare the different brands. Dave |

If you guys want to know about the Honda 4 stroke outboards, go talk to some of the mechanics at the Coast Guard who work on them. They have twin 225 hp's on both their small boats. They are great guys and would be more than happy to chat. I'm a hard-core believer in Honda products (have ridden Honda cycles all my life), but I believe that they have had some problems with their outboards. Ask for Mondo or Jim Pond, or stop by my office next door during the week if you want an intro. Eric Endersby MB HarPat |

Blackie, I think the Honda is better also, but the Yamahas are good too. I am finding that the Yamaha is around a $1000 cheaper. I was just in Oregon on the way to Alaska and good deals are at Brown's Landing. And, no sales tax. I would love to buy local, but there is such a big difference in price and none are available. Hondas are hard to get warrantee work done here if you need it. You must go to Oxnard. (Unless I'm wrong, and most you guys know how wrong I can be) Is anyone fishing salmon in MB? Or is it over here. I haven't been fishing since I have been back from AK. John |

Josh and Den, Thanks for the input on the 8 HP Yamaha Hi Thrust. I have done other research and I am told it will out perform a 15 HP Yamaha kicker. I have decided to also get power tilt and electric start that is available in the 8HP. And,,,a Nautamatic kicker autopilot with remote steer. Gives a guy more time to fish. What about those Moss salmon. John |

Friends: We were supposed to travel with the "Davis Boats" group to Bodega Bay for some salmon fishing. We made a decision to shorten our travel and ended up at Moss Landing. The reports had been that it was hot in Monterey Bay. Well ... after trolling for about 3-4 hours on Sunday we were quite depressed. We had two small fish. Then in a flurry between 4:30-5 p.m. we picked up two fish over 20 pounds. Here is a picture of my partner Bob Wendt with a 25 pounder. Now getting ready for the big tuna season ... hopefully... Yes, I agree that a shark playing possum, no doubt is bad news inside your boat (course a big hali can wreak havoc as well)...I also have witnessed first hand how tough and resiliant even a small shark can be after being "bopped" with a 34" baseball bat many times over...I think the safer order of business is to "pop" a couple .357 rounds into the beast, before at least bringing up on the swim platform, and maybe even rope/tail drag before even that...In any event, thank you Keith and Harrell, I consider myself warned! Lastly, Keith I will post notice if I hear back from Fred or find a source for the book. |

Gentlemen, What we need is good weather and water temps; last season I rolled with Steve on the P.H. and saw good conditions and bad temps or the Bering sea with 62 degree water. I have chased LFT up and down Cali and your fish are the ----! How about an airplane to start things off to locate the schools of tuna? I have seen them scouting down here in So Cal for other species?? Harrel, is terrafin a pay site or can any one take a look and the swell site I recommended last season worked well as my 2 day was right on the money with good conditions. I have to say with shame that a tuna broke me off on 40 lb ,,,but it was ande not maxima. Jackpot hung ,,,,snap! F-bomb, beer tye on another hook and wipe the tear away. I love this BBS and keep after them guys and pray for temps and conditions, and maybe Darby or Steve will fire up their cessna and take us to the meanest, strongest, smokinest, thickest tunas known to mankind. the Idiot. |

Fished the kayak for about an hour this morning off Avila. I was trolling a rapala behind the kayak, when, about 2 hundred yards from the oil pier I got a huge strike. Then another....then the line began peeling out, and out, and out!!! It wouldn't stop. I put the rod in the holder and began following it in the kayak. It probably took out over 100 yards of line. It finally stopped and I began to gain some line on it. Played tug of war for about 5 minutes and had hopes of a monster halibut, but when it just got "stuck" on the bottom I began to have my doubts. Buttoned down the drag and short-stroked the fish off the bottom...when I finally got a look at it wings!!! It was a 25-30 lbs. bat ray!!! Wow, can those things pull. Anyhow, that was the only action. I have some friends up in Oregon that caught albacore 3 miles off of Depoe bay. This is no joke. They've got 65 degree water on the beach. I know the guys personally that caught the fish. Wow!!! lat, steve |

Beautiful ocean out of Morro Bay. Between 8-10:30 caught 12 fish but returned 9 because they were too small. The 3 keepers were #7,9 and 12. Ranged in depth from 50-110 feet with the majority coming around 75. Ran some bait today and everytime I did they were stipped but only one hooked. Green and white hootchie behind a green flasher was the best for us. Only had a couple of bumps between 11 and 3:00. |

George, can you let me know if you were able to get a copy of Fred Archer's book. I've been looking for several months. The sharks can really mess up the inside of a boat. A friend had to have some upholstery work done. Better the seat then a leg. Good luck on the book and be safe. |

Charkbait is pretty fired up at Shimano. You may want to check out charkbait's web page. http://www.charkbait.com/cs/csrs2.htm |

George; You really don't want a 100 lb + thresher wake up in your boat after you think you bopped him !! Especially with a rappala still in his tail. Been there, done that ! Only once ! |

Dustin, Somewhat belated however, thanks for the tip on the website in Cabo to post questions about shark fishing and the information to get a copy of his book. As a side, Harrell's post advising that the head and tail should be removed prior to putting a thresher on board has me a little puzzled. While I assume the reason for removing the head and tail may be for storage and ice down purposes, I don't understand why this would be done before pulling the shark on board, other than the bloody mess it will make, that of course could be remedied by having saltwater spraydown set-up installed. |

Not if you live in Oregon ! The water is only 13 miles out of Brookings and I saw a report of a salmon troller three miles off the beach that caught albacore. Also saw a report of a Dorado caught up in that area. For us it is looking like dejavu all over again !! But it is too early to write this year off yet. |

Just got in from San Quintin, There were a couple of boats that tried for tuna to only find dirty waters 30 miles or so out. Did get some really good RF, And had a great time talking with Uncle Dale. later, Stacey |

Mark, if you look at todays temp break south of cabo, it is creeping around the corner. East Cape is probably going off today. |

Chip, we've gone in late April-early May and done well some years and not too good others. I hear its best in Oct-Nov. Going on a 6 day on Apollo to Guadalupe in Nov. Should be good. Never know when wahoo and dodo's will show south. Heard Loreto/La Paz "sometimes" in June. |

Mark, regarding San Jose del Cabo, it seems every year, things go haywire about May till mid July with respect to h2o temps. Every year I go to cabo in August and it has always been settled down by then with 82 degree water. Sorry you had a bummer trip. You were a few weeks early. |

Just got back from San Jose del Cabo fishing gordo banks and coast.Don't bother going. Water is 72 inside 30 miles. Went for 2 boatrides for 2 little reds. Out of Cabo, it's not much better. Cruisers are running 25-35 miles out to warm and blue water. |

For what it's worth: I was taught to fish halibut by my old neighbor George. I was 25 when I came to Cayucos and bought the house next door to him. He was 55 then. He has passed on, but he was one of the best halibut catchers I have ever met. He taught me allot of ways to catch fish and here's a couple of things he was strict about. He would fish MB one hour before the incoming tide to one hour after. That's it. He always used live anchovies as large as we could get. He would hook them up through the jaw and nose holding the mouth shut. I could have died waiting for him to gently set the hook. George was a master fisherman. We caught more huge lingcod (25 to 40 pounds)on a handline than most people will ever catch with rod and reel. He instilled in me a love for the sea and I miss him. Old John |

Thanks for the Halibut tips. I haven't been using a trap hook, but I haven't missed that many fish either. Mostly, I just haven't had that many takers and that just leaves me questioning my choice of bait. Usually smelt (4"-7") from my cast net Of course tide and area are just as likely reasons to not find fish and I've yet to figure out the key in Morro Bay. I also take a 20-30 count, as agonizing as it often is. |

Remember that when you feel the halibut thump on the end of your line, he/she has just grabbed the bait. I usually pull just a little tension to make sure he's there then give full slack for 20-30 seconds for them to re-position the bait so they can swallow it. After that, slighty wind until tension is right there and set the hook strongly but not overwhelming (they have a soft mouth). If they miss the hook on the first take, they make have the bait crossways in thier mouth. If they feel even a little tension they will not let go as they think their prey will escape, thus the reason for full slack to up their confidence of bait death and final chew. |

Morgan, How big are the smelt that you are using? If they are > 8", you may be limiting what halibut that you can catch (probably fish > 30"). That would be cool, but may make for some slow days. I've been catching mine on 4-6" chovies or dines. I've been using a trap hook and have caught half of my fish on that hook, although I am still missing fish. I have not had a problem with shorts being hooked deep. I had quite a few hits on friday and think I learned a little bit on how they hit. I think halibut lunge off the bottom (they are ambush predators for the most part), grab the bait however they get it, and then glide back down to the bottom. Most of the time they stop and reposition the bait for consumption. Othertimes they will take off (feel the hook?) and set the hook themselves. I've been waiting at least a 10 count to tighten up on the fish, but probably waited 20-30 on a few fish. I'm using circle hooks for the front hook, so there is no hook set. I'm still learning, but, unfortunately, it seems the more you know about halibut the less it helps! best fishes, steve |

Took the skiff out for salmon today from M.B. Picked up one 26" salmon in 140ft about a mile west of the Rock around 11:00. Caught on a watermelon croc off a 2# drop weight with 60 pulls. Any advice on using smelt for live bait on Halibut? I've had mediocre luck and I'm wondering if anchovies are that much better. Thanks, Morgan |

Fished PSL again today out of the skiff. Not nearly as many pick-ups today, but we still managed to boat 5 fish, 2 of which were keepers (23-24"). Several other boats out, most got at least 1. Only heard of 1 salmon caught by the sport fleet. Sounded like there wasn't any bait out there (like yesterday). 1biglove, drop me an email about local fishing. best fishes, Steve (mini-Avocation) |

Good day out of Morro Bay. Got 6 fish in about and hour and a half between 9-10:30. Fish were running shallow, 60-75 feet down in about 160 feet of water. Hit green crocs and hoochies. One of the strangest was when I was bending over to clip my leader on the downrigger cable, a fish hit it on the surface and had to hand line battle it until I could get the deck hands to get the pole and clear it from the downrigger. Calm ocean but foggy with some restricted visability. |

Timothy: Well, I was hoping that as a CCW holder, Feinstein was a believer in gun ownership. But I guess from your laughter that that isn't necessarily true! I had figured that she might have been a hippocrat in this regard, but I had some wishful thinking and hoped otherwise. Thanks for setting the record straight. Eric Endersby |

Eric E, You're information regarding firearms on boats is pretty much spot on, thank you. You're also right about Sen. Fienstien and her CCW Permit status and I'm sure your comment was meant in sincerity and I truly mean no disrespect but I am rolling on the floor laughing about her "sympathy" towards us gun owners. That was for certain the funniest thing I have heard all day! Truthfully, she would prefer to see every firearm taken from every citizen regardless of its purpose. She is "Gun Control's" numero uno supporter without a doubt. Now, back to the fish forum....I was just compelled to comment and share my laughter! Here's to good fishing! |
