Sissy, I don't have a paper chart for the Mount, but you can see it here on "Maptech". Hope this helps a little. Click the "back" button to return to the forum or it will dump you off if you close it. Thanks for the info on the squid jigs. How long do the squid hang around in the Chinese? Can a guy tie up all night in the Chinese? John |

Gary I laughed at the same article. It is true the Oregon coastline has been out of wack this season as well as part of last season. Water temps up there are extremely hight compared to normal with Albacore being caught as close as 3 miles from the beach. But when they throw in the Central and Northern Cali comments along with confusing data numbers that have no backing its hard to swallow. Too bad we cant get Mel to sneak in an article or two about what is realy happening off our coastline! Nice to see the Cal Poly project is still operating. |

Has anyone read the article in the Tribune on Tuesday about "our mysterious ocean"? I don't understand where Mr. Sakuma is getting his data from. Here's a quote from the article: "And researchers counted the lowest number of juvenile rockfish in more than 20 years of monitoring in Central and Northern California -- fewer than 100 caught between San Luis Obispo and Fort Bragg this year, compared with "several thousand" last year, said National Marine Fisheries Service biologist Keith Sakuma." Am I missing something here? |

Went up the coast from Morro Bay about 40 miles yesterday with Bill Miller and Mike Carnes and it was like the old days. Caught a 32# halibut on the first drop, a 23# salmon on the next, and a 20# halibut on the third. No kidding! We scored many quality reds and olives and the weather was perfect. Life is good. Chinese is on the charts. It's right in the middle of Santa Cruz Island. One big bay. You can buy the squid jigs at Sport Chalet, Sportmart, or any local tackle shop in Ventura. Try Erics in Ventura. Sorry dont have the number. |

Tim is right ..those little small ganion type squid jigs is the ONLY WAY TO GO!! Those things have saved the day on more than one occation at the islands. The ones with the little red beads work best. |

Tim Mohawk, Where do you get the multi jig ganions for squid? And where is the Chinese? Is it marked on the chart? Never been to the islands before, but headed that way as soon as I get this concrete down in Cayucos. Also, has anyone had experience with the Nautamatic autopilots that steer your kicker? Thanks, John |

Squid is in Chinese in about 95' of water. You can make it during the day time. Do you have the small squid jigs that have 5 small jigs on one ganion? A must. Most sounders it shows as light blue color. Good luck! |

Well Mike, Bring the Legacy up here and lets go! Although the escarpment area may be holding, I think it would be a sure thing if we put in the distance up this way. Trying to get the boat and trailer ready for the run to the islands the weekend of the 12th. If your going over for the fisharama we will see you there if all goes well. With the winds coming down this entire week, I forsee that break moving in another 20 miles or so. Its about time!! Dustin |

Good weekend was had at the Channel Islands...things finally started to look up, daytime squid was easy to make. We made 50 pieces in short order, my top fish was a 32lb (handheld scale) flattie. Tons of true pig barracuda everywhere, and we've got a seal-munching Whitey on the prowl at San Pedro Pt. Seabass hot and cold... Off to the Eastern Sierra with my three boys for the next few days, the camper is on the truck and the gear is loaded. Back next week and I hope you guys will have tuna blood on the decks by then!!!! Dustin...you can crew for me if your boat is SOL!!!! Everyone be safe. Dave My Three Sons |

I dont care and Im sure noone else really cares how it's spelled, as long as they are finding fish. I want to thank Virgils, or is it Virgins, or maybe Verges, for taking the time to hunt down the LFT. In case the spelling is cornfusing, It stands for Long Fined Tuna. Thanks for everones work here and for all the info. Tony |

Went on a tuna chase today....no tunas today. Took a 243 heading from Morro Bay, at 47 miles hit a temp break from 57.2 to 59.2. Put the gear in thinking the warm water had moved in a bit, 15 minutes later, back to 57.2. Thinking we were near the edge we decided to continue on the 243 until we hit the temp break. Hit the break @ 60 miles, went as far as 62 & trolled the area for awhile. Water color was great, but no birds or sea-life in general. The ride out was pretty nasty, the afternoon was much nicer, making for a pleasant journey home. The last area we were was 35.07/122.02, 59.3 water temp. |

I understand that they are still having problems with people catching too many canary rockfish. I know that most of you are already clued-into the problem and know that you must toss back these illegal fish. Here is a picture I took of a canary caught on one of the sport boats this season. The color is generally more "yellowish" than the vermillion rockfish and the gray striping more prominent. Also, the forked tail is a clear difference from the straight up-and-down tail of a vermillion. Please get the word out that we have to avoid these fish if we want to keep our whole season of rockfishing. Mel |

We fished yesterday morning south of Cambria in about 135 feet of water for a dozen big reds. Bite turned off about 11 a.m. and the water started getting snotty. Headed in with a nice bunch of fish. Here is a picture of my partner Bob Wendt with 2 nice reds. The weather better improve soon or there won't be any trips out to look for the LFT. Mel |

Got out of Morro Bay late, 11:00Am due to work and fished the standard areas for no salmon today. I found two huge bait balls, one in 65 feet of water off Old Creek and another in 150 feet of water directly off the Rock, but no one was home on either of them. The DFG girl at the ramp said only one 23" salmon was caught all day. Bummer. Will on the Bait Ball |

Put a long day in at PSL. Fished salmon for two hours this morning out by the redlight. No bait to be found anywhere and not a single knockdown. Another skiff in the area caught 1 shaker. Pretty slow. Came inside and fished halibut until 4 pm. Probably had a dozen pick-ups, 8 fish on and 6 in the boat, for 2 23-24" keepers. Lost a hog near SL creek, never saw it, but it was heavy. The best bite was between 11 and 2 p.m., but we were getting hits pretty regularly. Had another nice fish follow the bait right to the boat and then grab it at the last second, missing the hook of course!!! Got a little snotty on the outside early, but was like a sauna on the inside all day. best fishes, steve (mini-Avocation) |

Here is the latest Navy composite SST, since we have not had a good Terrafin shot since the 12th. Looks like 35:00 122:00 would be the closest place to look for LFT ! There was a boat looking this morning at the "guide" which is about 50 miles west of Santa Cruz in clean blue 60 degree water with no fish reported yet. https://128.160.23.54/products/OFA/epdofa.gif |

John, thanks for the comeback. I did something real original - I called Pacific Trailer (duh!) and found out that if I give them the vin number of the trailer, they have all of the specs and if not in stock, they will manufacture the supports (and galvanize them). Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. We'll see how it works out. Thanks again. Bill |

Weather seems to be coming down, am considering a Saturday tuna run from Morro Bay-weather permitting. No terrafin shot for over a week, good edge about 60 miles then. Was thinking of heading 240/250 or so until I found some water. Any good educated guesses where the water could be now considering the wind we've had? Thanks, Bob |

Bill Miller, I built one of my trailers a few years ago and had the entire trailer hot dip galvanized at Moore galvanizing in Madera. The closest and best around then. He will expect it to be sand blast clean and delivered. They have done several of my welding projects in the past. Great people. It cost $1.40/lb. then, and worth every penny. John |

Does anyone have any suggestions for someone in the area that does trailer repairs? I need some of the bunk supports replaced (a little more rust than I like) and I'd rather have it done without having to "store" the boat. It's a Pacific galvanized trailer - I've looked in the catalog and I can order the saddle and the riser, but the riser would need to be cut to the proper height and angle, then welded on the saddle. Also, how does the gavlanizing fit in? They come galvanized, so do you just cold galvanize the weld or is there some place around that does galvanizing? As usual, all help is appreciated. Bill |

Went out of Morro Bay this morning into a foggy but nice ocean - at least in the morning. Got 2 salmon -12 and 20 pounds between 50-85 feet down in 190 feet of water by the yellow buoy. I metered some bait just before they hit. They hit between 8-9:00. Only saw one other boat out and had no idea how he did. |

Hello there Will Bateman - a name from my past! I ashamed to say that I didn't know that you were a fisherman - especially ocean fishing. I have a 22 ft Grady White and would love to have you fishing with me one day (since I'm retired, I usually go during the week). Give me a call at home - under Bill and Marjie. Looking forward to hearing from you. |
