April 2008 and the Mahi came in and out thick. Its now ONO running big at the outside FADS. Tuna have made a small showing but are keeping everyone at bay with 4.00 plus gas prices. We pulleda720 Pound Pacific blue in February. GOOD FUN! Kauai Still has it after all these years. Check out some tuna pics athttp://www.deepseafishingkauai.com |

Wow! not a whole lot of traffic here but i'll post anyway. 15, yup! That's fifteen mahimahi in one morning. It was pandamonium. The biggest was 30 lbs. We had six off at the boat. The pack was hungry. Kauai is still rockin as a fine fishing destination. Look at the location. It's as far from anywhere in the world as you can get. The fish love it and so do I. |

It's November and you thought it was over but it's not. The tuna are running late and though they are running fast if you are willing to run them down you can have one for yourself. We found the birds outside CK on the East side of Kauai. They were running and diving and siting and running again. It was madness. The action stayed on the surface for a minute only if not less. Ten minutes later it would start again a 1/4 mile away. No time to make bait. Just run and run some more. We picked up to a fast troll and popped the clip on our port outrigger. The reel peeled off line and it was on. Holding course and speed we let the fish get used to the new direction. Backing off allowed me to gain some line and it kept coming. Just like that. It's so easy sometimes. It helps that the water was calm and the sun was shining. But it also helps to have good people who have been to the rodeo a time or two. This was a fun one. Just me and pops having the day of our lives again. We have done it so many times together but there was still a big high five and a rappid beating of the heart as we made time getting the lines back in. It was a rootbeer jet that caught the eye of this 50 LB tuna. We only got 1 but today we batted a 1000. When you're ready to get serious with the old man check out the fishing action on Kauai and give us a call. Captain J, Deep Sea Fishing Kauai, 808 634-8589 |

Subject: Another Sh**y day in...
Otta day… on a ledge far far away…. With Wind Waves & White Caps Running Down the Sea…. Was a Summer month…Sunny & Warm…Morning Water Temp rite at Preferred 80 Degree…. We had the guys on Board, Anxiously Hoping for Their Fish…The Big Fish…. As Big as He… As we Watched the Big Yellowfin Slashing Across the surface Chasing after the Bridled Skipee…
Leaving the harbor, Watching the Sun Rise over the wind swept Blue waters to the East… the 30 knot winds on call for the day were over halfway there, as they had the been Blowing nonstop day & Night the last week. I knew in my mind the Deep waters that were Holding the Pile were in some Nasty big waters with white caps big as houses… waters the gentlemen down below were not prepared for, no matter how they said they think they are on the phone last night… As we came over the 40 Fathom ledge & the current pushed the head high waters into strait up & Down Walls of Blue & White…Could see in their faces & eyes that this Isn’t what they had in mind…though, they weren’t exactly Not liking it.
So there we were…just going over the edge, the bait rods bit simultaneously… Cool… Neptune likes me today… As the gents got the 25 class rods out & Started working the Small Skipjack tuna to the boat, I quickly reeled in the bigger 50’s that were out & put the lures away & got out the Bait rigs & needle. I ask the gent with the second Aku to just hold his off the corner as I rig up the first, I could see a deep Red forming in my palm from the Skippy as I gently put the needle thru the eye sockets & twisted the bridle to just the rite tight. As I worked the hook from the small feather that caught the Skippy, I could see where the blood was coming from…. I new this was not The bait we wanted, it will surly bleed out in no time….but that’s OK… the other one is lip hooked perfectly & not even a little light pink came off it while rigging the 25 foot mono leaderd 12/0 J hook to it’s head & gently dropping it back into the water to swim with us for a while….
Ahh…Perfect baits, just under two pound SkipJack Tuna…. One bleeding out slowly & the other Strong as could be.
The gents were liking this part, the boat slowly Idling down Sea, into the Deep waters, ¾’s a mile off the Cliffs… Watching the Short bait we put just off the rigger, just on the surface, swimming along…weekly as the blood was almost gone from it but it’s Shine was Still in Full Glow… it would get week & skip along a few minutes & then dig back in & swim a little, just enough so the cappy would let it stay…
The other, Much Healthier bait was out about 150 foot behind the boat Swimming along like a pet…a Scared Pet… By the angle & pull, it seemed very healthy… It was rigged to a rubber band off the transom with a 50 foot drop back loop in the line going back to the Rod that was set At Strike, Heavy Strike as it’s Tuna season & if it gits bit, it’ll be too fast to get the reel into freespool & feed extra the way Bigger Tuna often Grab the bait & Eat on the Run…
As the boat rides the swell into deep water, the Feeling on board is good, We Are looking Good. The guys are talking about how they are gonna pull in the Big Tuna or Marlin when it will Surly eat one of those fresh baits… the cappy is kina grinning inside knowing the gents have Never seen much less Pulled on Any fish over 30 pounds… & he looks at the 50 Wide Internationals attached to the perfect baits…
So there we were… Cappy says…`It’s getting Nervous & points to the long baits rubber, it was really stretching out & back as the little Skipjack was obviously panicking back there… The short bait most be able to see as it’s Swimming along looking as Healthy as possible for a wounded fish with a big hook attached to it’s head… LOOK AT THAT !!! Cappy points towards the long bait, as he does, everyone can see the Yellow Sickles on the big tuna as it chased the little tuna around…making a big racket on the surface back there… But the rubber doesn’t do anything….just the pressure from the line dragging behind…then… Snap!! WE’RE BIT !!!!
As fast as cappy says that, the Rod doubles over & line Starts paying out at an Amazing speed….the reel is more than Screaming, it’s more of a humming sound the line came off so fast…
As the gents sit there mesmerized by the sound & site of the reel paying out line, cappy comes down & pulls in the short bait that is now hiding close as it can get to the boat, looking to help out Mr. Murphy but it stays clear & cappy puts it the box saying it’s to tired to keep alive & were probably gonna be a few minutes on That Fish that’s Screaming out line from the Rod sitting in the Holder, cappy says… By the Way Guys… `Did ya come ta Fish or just Watch ??? as he Laughed in their direction telling Someone to Please put a belt on & get the rod out of the holder & maybe start working the fish when it slows…
Then the classic moment when the three guys try to pass on their Fish of a Lifetime…you do it, no, You do it..no, not Me, YOU do it & so on… cappy just Smiles & Says…SOMEONE DO IT !!!
I’d say the young healthy looking guy ended up with the belt on…but…. There really wasn't a guy that fit that description on board that day….
So there we were… 8 minutes after the bite…the gent Strapped into the belt & reel…the 50 wide just about half way empty… Full pressure & the older gent couldn’t move… so… we get the Next guy in…. He does a little better & the line stretch is out & the fish is slowing, going strait down behind the boat into the winded waves that were breaking into the boat as it sat out of gear like it was Anchored.
Cappy tries re`explaining what he went thru before departing the harbor about lifting up & reeling down on the rod but the gent was having a hard time at it though he wasn’t dumping line by lifting too hard & fast, he was just having a hard time on the drop & wind part… but gaining a little…
After 15 minutes of this, time for the next gent…cappy tells him to not be excited & try to work the tackle & Not waste precious energy, this gent does good, nice short lifts, quick drops just cranking what he can get & keeping the pressure on the whole time…
But The Fish wasn’t Cooperating in the least, once it got into it’s deep style of pulling on the thing in it’s jaw, it was intent on Not getting any closer & it just Stayed where it was, with about half the spool out.
So there we were… Time for the next round….back to the first gent, he now saw what we were working for & settled into a fairly good rhythm… gaining & losing line evenly….he lasted another 10 minutes & time to change Anglers Again…
5 minutes into this turn… OH SHOOT !!!! the Reel won’t turn…HUH ??? cappy says as he gives the handle a try…Nothing, it’s Jammed. Heck…Now What ???
Cappy grabs the thin line & pulls in a few feet by hand to relive pressure & asks to try now….Nothen… SHOOTS !!!! The reel is frozen, line won’t come in or out… &… it’s attached to a pretty good sized Yellow Fin Tuna… in head high waves & 25 knot winds…`We’re Screwed…
cappy saw it was a good sized tuna & with the seas like they were, handlining the line into a bucket would be just looking for trouble so he decides to take line off one of the other reels & cut & tie this line to it & Reel it in…easy…
Luckily, the tuna was mellowed by now & with the 250 yards of mono out stretching, it hasn’t broke line yet…
So there we are… Pulling line off one reel into a bucket as the cappy pulled by hand as much as he could on the fish & gentle laid that line on the deck in nice clean coils in case the fish wanted to run…. When the extra reel looked to be empty enough to hold the line attached to the fish…we made the decision… OK, cut that line & pull about 10 feet off the rod & keep that end clear so we could get to it… Then, when we cut this line with the fish attached, we’ll just do a quick blood knot & reel in the extra line cappy hand lined till we come tight to the fish & back to Work…sounds like a plan…
We did it, Smooth as could be… `but Wait… Oh Heck… We tied the two rods together…LOL… The line with the fish is Still cleated off….
So we do it again, This time…NO Excitement when the line gets cut… Perfect, we quickly reel in the line on the deck & sure enough, the Very heavy weight of the tuna Is Still there for the gents to pull on… This time, cappy asks them to try & not twist the reel & handle as much between the three of them…
20 minutes & after they all take another turn on the reel, we have color, not under the boat but back behind it, up on the surface, it’s swimming slowly facing away from the boat…cappy asks the last gent on the rod to just be easy & short stroke it & he does…
as the 25 foot leader reaches rod tip, we can see the fish looks to be wrapped up… NOT… The Dang Thing went & Hooked itself in the A$$… `yep…the hook is in the Tunas anal slit… & it is just barely swimming away…
Cappy takes the leader very Gently & guides the fish alongside & Plants the Gaff into it’s throat & ties it off…
& Turns to look at the three Guys that just Caught the Biggest Fish they have ever seen, as we pulled over the side & laid it on the deck, they were like little boys the way they were Smiling…
Back at the dock, the fish weighed in at 175 pounds, Allison Tuna. NICE WON !!!
The reel problem was the three little brass screws that hold the gears together on the 2 speed Gold Penn’s, all three were sheared in half & the heads of them were jamming the rest of the reel up…. One problem with having Many different Fighting Styles on One reel with a Lot of pressure.

Subject: Jan. 2001, Kauai Hawaii...
First Week…
01-01-01…Started the year out with a nasty system that came thru, canceled my first charter, good or Bad???? Not sure, good cause I didn’t “Take” the folks $$$$…bad cause I didn’t take “Any” $$$ , lost em, they left or never called back…
01-03…Had a nice older couple from England, did a ¾ day, after the story from the day before where the “Other” boat got 7 big Yellow fin, We went strait out to the Buoy, Great conditions, upon arrival, we watch a local boat pull a nice tuna over the side, easy 180lb.…COOL…we’re Here!!!… We make 1 pass with the lures to see what is happening, 4 boats there, 1 just landed a nice 1, 1 guy in a local boat is trying to make bait, `he is trying TOO hard, the bait is messing with him… Another local boat, one of Kauai’s Best fishkillers, Just got Bit…Looks like a nice one, the guy starts pulling by hand…we pull in the lures & get on top of the bait, the other boat that just made a Kill is dropping bait & gits bit imediatly…we can hear his Senator 16/0 Screaming… I get The BUZZzZZ……We get a bait on the first drop, cool, we get in front of the buoy & drop the bait down, marked the fish at 40 fathoms, (240ft.) AHHhh… So here we are, motor off, drifting on the FAD in 6000 ft. of water…, Flat water, one boat washing BLOOD & getting back in front of the buoy, two boats pulling BIG Fish right next to us & the poor guy beating his head against his gunnels trying to get a bait,
We have a Beautiful scad down….I’m noticing on the scope that the bait is spreading out & getting back away from the buoy…we make more bait while waiting for our bite…
The fishkiller pulls his fish over…looks 150ish…20 minutes on the hand pull, he comes back by us & drops a bait with a big smile, it was his third one since dark…the other boat is still working their fish, looks to be giving them a hard time… We’re still not bit as we get down current of the buoy so we pull the bait & get back up current & drop a fresh bait, didn’t mark the fish that pass…ah oh…
My customers are Enjoying this, the old guy seems to LOVE being here…I feel good watching him watch them… The 1 boat still doesn’t have a bait yet??? Poor guy, I’ve been there…(ya CAN’T let them p!ss ya off…
So here we are…drifting with a nice swimmer down deep, 30 ft. from the Killer, we’re talking from boat to boat, no radio, (this IS ALL Top Secret, if ya read this much…we’ll have ta kill ya), turns out, the guy from the day before was at the Other buoy 3 miles away, I can see a mess of boats there, No one knows This one was holding, the Killer was out the whole night, he had 6 in the box from the night before from 60# to 200…& 3 from sunrise, 100 to 160#…& a BIG SMILE, their worth $3.75 @ lb….whole fish…the guy makes some Serious $$$$ with just himself & his 24ft. Radon.
The other boat lands their fish, looks 100ish…they come over by us & drop a bait…in the 30 minutes we we’re there, we watched them pull two over their side…
Hate to say it…but… we missed the bite by 10 minutes…Hmmm… If we went strait to bait & didn’t troll that first pass to “Look”…maybe I shoulda started the trip earlier, maybe shudda kept trolling… Heck!!! At least we saw some nice fish & had The BUZZ…… We put the lures out & trolled around, went down to the other buoy & saw the crowds, what a mess, 15 boats ALL trying to get their lures or bait in front of the buoy…”How’d they ALL find Out????”…Turns out, Nothen happening…1 guy had 1 YFT about 60#, another missed a Stripe Marlin…we trolled the outskirts watching…
So there we we’re…trolling around with this empty feeling…not sure how to explain it…the customer is taking it good, He Saw how it went, Shoots…Missed the bite by 10 minutes!!!
We trolled to the ledge, thinking about bending a rod for the gent from England…We get to the “Red Buoy” & pull in the lines so we can drop baits & Iron…We put 1 of the fresh scads down on a circle hook on the 30# short rod while the older gent starts dropping my last big iron… “HANA `PAW!!! The bait gits bit… the wife gets to pull on it, looks like a fair fish…she does good with the short rod, 12 minutes from the dead boat, she gets her 18# Amberjack to the boat, we take pix & send it back down…& rig another… The older gent starts with the iron again, he’s into it… working it hard… Wham…ZZZzzzZZZZ da spinner went...BendO!!! He palms it HARD…PAK!!!!… OH Well….I kin get more Iron… We still have the bait down…ZZzzzZzz…Bite…we feed it a little, I give the rod to the older gent & tell him how to set with a circle hook & he does, “text Book”… missed it… he brings the bait up & we see it was a shark, Oh Well…Another bait goes down… Meanwhile, the Humpers (whales) are playing around close by, we can hear them blowing air & rolling around…
Bite…ZZzzzZZzzzzZZZZZZ!!! Nice One!!!! The old gent has a SMILE as big as they come…he works the fish good, the fish works him good…was a good fight for the old Fish Folk from the old country…Turned out to be nice ULUA 40 lb kind…HE saw Very Happy, in a weird way, I was too. Woulda been happier with some Tuna in the box…
We go tonight…I’m Excited!!!!!
Dan Stand Up!!! Nof fer now… Also, my friend caught & released a 6+ pound Peacock Bass last week at the lake down the road...

Subject: Winter fishing / Kauai
Winter in Hawaii / Kauai
Well, it’s almost here, in some places IT is already. In Hawaiian waters, the winter months are less than predictable. There are times when it is hard to find a good bite & there are times where the fish seem to be jumping in the boat.
The bigger tunas are a “Surprise” till towards the end of May. The school size can make a good showing, mostly less than 30 pounds, Yellow Fin & Skipjack. The Wahoo,(Ono), tend to be lower on the list of “Target” fish but will be found some days if looking for them. The Mahi-Mahi can be great, not with the smaller ones where ya get dozens but many days we can get over 10 fish with quality sizes. Off the bottom, the sharks seem to be available if you target them. The GTs & Amberjacks can be had, some days good. You need to check with the boat if you want to work the bottom, most will do it with advanced notice.
And of course, the Blue Marlin…In the winter months they can make a strong showing, often the smaller males will be the ones behind our boats. Some BIG ones will show when THEY want to. The Stripe Marlin & Short Nosed Spearfish can put in some pretty good numbers some weeks.
All in All, if your coming anyway, Ya might have a Great day on the Ocean. Just keep in mind that it might only be A Great day on the water. It could turn into one of the best days you have spent.
The Humpback Whales will be here from December thru April, Jan. & Feb. being best, often on the fishing boats we get some very good shows during the day.
It looks like the ElNino / LaNina thing seems to be going away, it might be a “Normal” Spring / Summer, Start planning your trip early so you can set up the trip YOU want. Most Captains will customize private charters for you with advanced notice.
If you do come & fish in Hawaii, make sure you talk with the captain that will be on the boat you will be on, this will save confusion as to what you sign up for. Also, the weather can change from week to week or even daily, reserve the day for the begging of your stay so you can reschedule if the weather picks up.
ALOHA & GOOD LUCK!!!

Subject: our hopes for September, Kauai
What we hope September will bring? First; we hope everyone gets to put some time with hooks in water. Second; we hope those hooks end up in the corner of fishes mouth’s. Third; with luck, it will be the fish you are looking for. Fourth; we b hoping, even if no fish find your hooks, you will still have a good time waiting / fishing.
This is what we’re hoping September will bring to the fishers in Hawaii, where the 100 fathom drop averages less than a mile from port. Kauai in particular. BENT Rods & broken rubbers! September can bring some of the best fishing of the year, if the ocean is in it’s normal way, All species can be found. Some in numbers, Big & small. Many years the weather can be almost “perfect”, 78 degrees with lighter winds during the day & 70 at night. September is a slow month for tourism, The islands are quiet, this is a month I recommend to my “mainland” friends & family to visit the islands, also October, November, May & June can be good months for a visit to Hawaii. If you’re from the North, any winter month would be good. The marlin & big tuna fishing can be “Hot” September & October. The ono are usually still cooperative. The smaller tunas can be thick & in numbers, skipjack, and yellowfin. Mahi-Mahi can show up any time & give a show like no other fish out there. The bottom can be productive & the seas might be calm enough for some good comfortable days working the inshore bottom fish. September, October can be the best month for nighttime drift chunking for big tuna, the squid are usually thick. With luck the school tuna will be hanging in there normal “spots” (koa’s) we should get plenty opportunity for baiting, some years tuna under 25 lbs. Can provide a lot of action. When they are here, marlin & big tuna are often close by. Hopefully, the big Skipjack Tuna will make their normal showing, up to 30 lbs. (Rocket Powered Blue Watermelons) these can be fun, often multiple strikes, sometimes all lines can come down! The marlin can in some years get red hot, Blue Marlin can go red hot throughout the year, Stripe Marlin can start to show, these billfish can move in small groups & the possibility of multiples is good. The Ono are usually still here, with the possibility of them schooling up & striking in numbers. Mahi-Mahi can go either way, hot or cold, some years they make a good showing, these might be the most fun to catch of all our fish; they will make pretty long runs, jump around often times, pull hard & look / fight a lot bigger than they actually are. Yet they are not so big that you get worn out after the first one, they usually school up, and multiple strikes are common, providing opportunity for strip baiting. This is just a guess from looking at years past. If you’re planning on a trip to the middle of the ocean, Sportfishing should be on the list of things to do. Always talk with the captain or crew that will be on the boat you will be fishing on; make sure everyone is in agreement as to the fishing YOU are interested in. A little extra time finding the boat you fish on will pay for itself when you go. The hotel concierge or other booking agents do not necessarily know the best operations. (They do know which will pay the highest commissions) Sport fishing is expensive; it is too easy to end up with an operation you are not satisfied with. The trip is for YOUR pleasure. I wish everyone the best of luck. Enjoy your day on the water, any water. If your lucky, you will be out when all goes rite & have the time of your lives. Or you will just enjoy being out & seeing & learning more about this game so many enjoy playing. ALOHA!!! Capt. Dan

Subject: EARLY SUMMER REPORT; KAUAI'S SOUTHSIDE
Kauai's leeward southside fish report Aloha! We've been seeing some good fishing here in the middle of the Pacific. The trades have been lighter than some years; hopefully they will stay lighter through the summer. The tuna have been cooperating, many over 100lbs. Not too many multiple strikes yet but their biting 1 at a time. We'll take that. It's still happening "in the blind" mostly, some bird piles are putting out but many days. You work the birds for hours, get tired of that, go wander & get blasted in the blind. Go figure? Just goes to prove; your "line ups" are from something. We are lucky in Hawaiian waters, we can most always see land & keep good landmarks. I like to fish them more than the GPS. I often wonder about fishing many blue water fisheries, where your out away from land & can't see anything but blue. Lucky Live Hawaii. The marlin are showing up in #s finally. Some good size females have come up. It's still not a daily thing but "almost". There's been some big ones, a charter on the east side had one around 700lbs."Maka Hou II" I believe that's the one to beet on Kauai so far this year. For charters. We're seeing the smaller males & even some multiple blue strikes, it's summer! The local tuna fleet has been doing well, one guy had one over 800lbs, there is a story of one out between Niihau & Kaula Rock, that was over 1500? I'll let you know when I find the reel story, I don't doubt the story, it came from good sources, every year one of these guys brings one in that looks over 1200. They never weigh these fish, they cut them & give big peaces away to whoever is around. I wish we had a good available scale here. There are some unbelievable ledges out there, check your charts, (Niihau south point & Kaula rock - 160.31W. 21.65N. Hawaiian Islands) many commercial guys don't even pull lures thru this area, "too many marlin". With a very full day trip, these waters are within range. Almost virgin water for charters, only local folk fish these waters. The smaller game is providing plenty action, the skipjack tuna are showing good along with ono & mahi, we are not coming in without fish too often. With the skippys around, the live baiting is on the menu more and the summertime kids are having fun with the light stand up tackle. When school is out, we get the families a lot & have some good fun out there, start them out young and fishing will be part of their lives for good. With families, we will look for smaller game with lighter tackle, hopefully get some school tuna, some ono or mahi and at the end we can possibly put Dad on a shark. Makes for good memories. I got to fish the "2000 World Cup" tourney July 4th, Kauai almost got on the map, we only had 1 boat fishing our waters, so we did good! We had the 3rd place fish out of 122 boats around the world. Kona Hawaii, beat us and the rest of the world out with a 633lb fish they hooked in the last 20 minutes. Good going guys!!! Funny thing, while Mike was standing up to this 500lb class marlin, a smaller blue came swimming around like a mahimahi, it stayed with the bigger fish for a good 6-7 minutes that we know of. We can spend days looking for a fish for our customers, when we don't want a smaller marlin, one comes & swims around, it Was cool to see it swimming around. We were thinking, it would of probably ate anything we offered but we didn't want it. Go figure. I fished with a friend out of Port Allen on Kauai's southwest side, - Open Sea Charters, (808-332-8213) captain Jimmy Horner (Edward) has a customer that fishes with him a couple weeks a year, Mike Contreres, the perfect charter; brings his own gear, lures and goes for full day trips for a week at a time. He also catches fish; they had one around 1165lbs a couple years ago. Mike uses stand up tackle, drags it all around the world with him, heavy stuff, & does good all around the world with it. Unfortunately, the 1165 was on the one rod out that came with the boat and he had to use the chair, funny how the fish gods work, Mike had 5 of his stand up outfits out & they put one of the boat rods out for a 6th pole, the fish bit that one, now Mike still has to stand up to a grander. The fish gods stay laughing. He has one in the 800ds out of Cabo. The way he fishes, he will probable get one some day, I hope he can stand up to another one off Kauai's leeward southside. Subject: Kauai, Hawaii
ALOHA! I'll be posting reports and stuff from the leeward side of Kauai. I run a charter out of Poipu, we use lighter Stand Up style gear on our boat. If you have any questions about standing up to gamefish, feel free to post them, I'll anser as much as possible. Also, any questions about Kauai or the whole state of Hawaii. I have lived and fished on all the islands, and can possibly help point you towards a good operation. If you like, check out my web site;
