Hey Sissy, I've been doing Leffingwell for 35 yrs also. I'm sure we've run into each other. Blackie too ! Joe & I haven't been out lately but I'll be going next week. I fished there 3 weeks ago 2 times. Whichever fishing buddy I take, I've been outfishing them 5 fish to their 1 since I started using the new 'GULP' lure @ Wal-Mart. And their using bait ! The lings especially love'em Fish-On, Dave |

Leffingwell users: I have been launching at leffingwell for 35 years. It pays to time your launch and wait for the right surf. I have seen some very bad injuries and damage occur there. If it isn't right, go home and try another day. Watch for whales. They can accidently swamp you. Live anchovies are best, if you don't mind rebaiting allot. Take fresh frozen whole squid on 8/0 hooks for the lings. The squid stays on better. And of course jigs work too. Have a blast. John |

There's a beach launch called Leffingwell Landing. Good if you have a light tin boat or inflatable. Occasional breakers on the beach, so you've got to have your act together going out and coming in. |

Whats the deal with San Simeon. Does Virg's still have the rights to fish out of there? Does anyone plan on opening it up any time in the future or is it even still possible to load a boat from there? Just curious if you could shine some light on the situation. |

Hey guys I want to take this time to say Thank You to the Coast Guard out of Morro Bay. I fished Sat up above the Lighthouse and on the way back I had an electrical problem and lost all power engine and electronics( thank God for cell phones ). The Coast Guard came and towed us in. They were a great bunch of Guys and one Gal. Very professional. They do an outstanding Job and I believe sometimes a thankless Job so I just wanted to say Thank You. |

Bill and "Anonymous": Thanks for the feedback and the effort to get your fish in the dumpster. I realize that the gulls are a big part of the problem, and hope that I didn't come off like I thought that all of you were just chucking your carcasses everywhere all the time, because I don't. But a few missed shots over a busy weekend will add up. Thank you all for doing what you can. Today, we turned the dumpster so that it faces more toward the cleaning rack, making the free-throws easier. But we also have to leave it so that the dump truck can drive right up to it and pick it up. Hopefully this will help. We'll take it one step at a time. Wes: There is no vessel assist or equivalent in Morro Bay. It's either us and/or the Coast Guard. We both tow (emergency and non-emergency) free of charge. But don't let that stop you from being fully prepared - get that kicker! You can always reach us on VHF marine channel 12 or 16 during daylight hours (we're not on duty at night), or the Coasties 24/7 on 16. Our phone number is 805-772-6254, the Coasties in Morro Bay 805-772-2167. See you all on the water... Eric Endersby Chief Harbor Patrol Officer MB Harpat |

fished at Morro Bay Sunday and the dumpster was overflowing with fish carcasses. I made sure mine made it in, but i think gulls were just pulling fish heads off of the top of the pile onto the pavement. there seemed to be alot of non-fishing related garbage in the dumpster |

Eric - sounds like the cleanup was really SPECIAL! When cleaning fish coming off of my boat, I will commit to keeping the area clean and properly using the dumpster (however, I will miss the "Kobe" moments). Thanks for all of your help and work for the sport fishermen. Bill |

Hey gang: I'd like to ask for a little help in Morro Bay at the fish cleaning station: Today my partner and I spent some quality time in the afternoon scraping fish carcasses and guts from the parking lot around the cleaning station with shovels. It was pretty foul. Lots and lots of rockfish and lingcod bodies. I know that the gulls get down into the dumpster and pull carcasses out. But I also know that the gulls are thrown freshly cleaned fish by well-meaning fishermen. Please DON'T DO THIS! It creates a total mess and a health hazard. And to prevent the gulls from getting into the dumpster, if the big lids on the dumpsters are open, they can easily fly in and out. But if the big lids are closed, the small openings left will not allow them to do so. So PLEASE if you see the big doors open, do us all a favor and swing them shut. And finally, don't fling your carcasses at the dumpster from the fish rack in hopes of making a Kobe Bryant free-throw. Make sure that you walk over and get them in. Thank you all very much, and glad to see so many of you out there enjoying the ocean and catching fish. Eric Endersby Chief Harbor Patrol Officer MB Harbor Patrol |

At the derby, the 37 pounder was caught on Saturday up off of Morro Bay. They also caught a 28 pounder. On sunday on the same boat a 39 pounder was caught, but by a different person. There was also a 38 pounder brought in from off of Morro. A 30 and 29 was brought in from down by the river to. Lots of big fish yesterday. |

From Bat Board: Posted: 31 July 2005 at 9:43am | IP Logged ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Fished the Davidson on Saturday for two peanuts. Heard of a boat with as high as a reported 25 or so fish with several pushing 40lbs. Seemed most of the boats only had a few very small fish. The guy with 25 fish fished on top of the mount all day at 43 and 43. There was also a decent spot of fish about 10 or so miles NE of the mount at 55 and 34. Heard of a few good reports from this area. Also had a friend have a fish bit in half by a killer whale out there today....Sorry for the late report couldn't get on the computer last night and I was dead tired. |

Fished PSL in the skiff again today. Took my pop out for his B-day. Fished the same areas for 2 24" halibut, and 2 keeper lings. Had probably another 6 raked baits, but with the huge bait it was tough to hook them. Had on another possible T-shark, crazy fight and then sawed off with major line abrasion. Heard there was a 39# halibut caught today...Wow!!! I need to try trolling for 'em I guess. Nice day on the water, not much wind until about noon. Hope those albacore come in closer. best fishes, steve (mini-Avocation) |

Went out for the first time in search of the Halibut. Lots of fun and great advise from the bait guys. Didnt feel so bad lots of boats at the coke plant and no fish. At the end of the day went up to the break water for the old reliable reds and blues.Try again next weekend for another education. |

Right, 65 statute miles and 56 nautical miles to where the fish were caught. The biggest fish was around 10 lbs. Not monsters but it could be the beginning of a good year for us. There were also fish caught outside the CSM buoy yesterday. Virg's has a boat today and probably some sport boats. The wind is coming back up for a few days but when it lays down the fish should be a little closer. Terrafin shows warm water almost in to Purisima. |

We fished Cape San Martin buoy area today for nada. Put gear in at 60 miles, trolled to 70 & turned south. We could hear the chatter from the Santa Cruz boats & knew they were into the fish. We worked the area pretty hard all day, best we did was spot 2 jumpers to no avail. Glad to hear people got into them.... Beautiful day on the water. |

Just got back to clovis from two days of fishing at moss landing fri and sat. left moss landing at 2:30am friday with 2 scoops of the best bait I have ever had, 1 scoop for dynamo dan and 1 for me. had 3 captains on board. tom from the rose lee.sean from the west coaster and myself. tom used a 5 gallon bucket with a lid to transfer the scoop of bait to dan and just threw it overboard. for and easy pickup by dan. dan launched at monterey, with no bait. got to the tip of the davidson at 5:30 and put out 7 lines. at 5:50 had our 1st fish a 22 pounder but couldnt get any on bait. to make a long story short, 39 ALBACORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for the day for the 3 of us.the biggest fish was a 38 pounder!! total 3 over thirty, 5 over twenty, and the rest between 10 and 13 pounds. one bait stop went WFO for over an hour for 15 fish. it really helps to have a good crew. all day was flat calm. got back to moss at 7;30pm. today fished the bay for 2 salmon, 6 and 8 lbs. and 3 limits of rock cod. Isn't life great!!!! cant wait to do it again. Tight lines to all!!! |

Tough fishing and early wind today out of PSL. Trolled around for T-sharks for a few hours for nada. Worked same areas as yesterday for halibut for 1 short and two large-size mystery fish that wrapped us up in kelp. Came in at noon with one 28" ling in the box. Sounded like the halibut fishing was slow today, but we'll see what the rest of the fleet brings in. lat, steve |

From Bat Board today; Biting! Posted: 29 July 2005 at 9:43pm | IP Logged ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Went strait to the Davidson. Temp brake was in the same spot as wednesday. Water went from 59 to 62.5 in a very short distance. about 5 miles before the sea mount. The fish were at the mount not the brake. We did 28 small to medium. Gary got 39 with some as big as 38 pounds. Did the LTH all thge way back to the brake foe one peanut. Surface warming caused the water to be 62.5 all the way back to Carmel. Water was dirty green long outside the Wenie. The brake was obviously in the same place as indacated not by temp in the afternoon but by the weed line and color change. Any Questions? Dan |

Went to the 35.00 122.00 line looking for albacore today, friday 7-29. Nothing going on. Clean, blue 62 degree water, but no albacore. It is possible we went past the fish, as after what happened this morning, I no longer trust my temperature guage: it was saying 59 degrees most of the way out (until about 70 miles from PSL), but then on the way in--through the exact same water--it was saying 62-64 degrees. Weird. Anyway, there was definitely not a lot of bait or albacore to be seen in that area for us. I would check the SST's for a run farther south by the donut. Just my opinion. |

Also,,,Gilly no longet works for Virg's ( To bad to, he's a great cook ) And they don 't BB-Q on the Admiral any more to my knowledge. Somebody tell Darby to get some new photos posted. Fished PSL in the skiff today. Gorgeous ocean til noon, then a good breeze picked up. Absolutely no swell...flat as a pancake. Caught 3 halibut and 1 nice ling around the Pea Patch area. Got a 32", 30", & 24" halibut. I also busted off a nice fish...cut clean through my leader. Felt like a big 'but, I'm going to 30# leader. I also had on, what I believe, was a thresher shark for a while. It was big, but felt really funny, like it was hooked in the tail. When is cut me off, my line was skinned up for 2 feet up the leader. Fun for a while though. Bait was big sardines (5-8"), not in the best shape...many rolled after a few hours. Going to fish for Threshers tomorrow. Never done it before. Was thinking of trolling rapalas from the Lighthouse to Diablo and back in 40-60' of water. Any suggestions? best fishes, steve (mini-Avocation) |

Just checked the visible satellite and the marine layer has cleared out from the beach to around the donut and south. We should get an SST shot tonight or tomorrow to see if any warm water is coming in from the SW. Based on "Salty Docs" report I would be more inclined to check out the donut than run all the way to the Davidson. Hey Harley, you have a good radio/antenna because we could hear you at the red light yesterday and Seeker also. If anyone goes looking for LFT tomorrow and needs to know what the SST looks like give me a call on your cell. 805 929 1724 |

Went fishing just below Cape San Martin on Tuesday and Wednesday. Caught two limits of reds and ling cod. Two of our lings were over 36 inches. Threw back at least a half dozen lings that were "keepers." Monster reds. If anyone desires to do a 2-day trip and wants to bring back two limits of fish, be sure to look at the DFG regulations. You have to send in your application with $4.25 to DFG at leaset 48 hours before your departure. By the way, San Simeon Harbor is a great spot to anchor up for the night... Mel |

Other than live bait, what do you guys think the best halibut lure is? I've done best with dead anchovies, but what about lures. I have never got one on a fish trap, but I have on other hard crank baits. Any help is appreciated. |

Motor oil grub rigged carolina with gold or red flake. Fish the incoming tide around boilers, anywhere there is a depression in the sand. Sand Crabs are plentyfull and work as well. D |

I just heard the port san luis halibut tourn.is this weekend! There were no forms mailed out this year? It's supposed to be a low key affair and salmon enhancement is not involved.I don't think there is a BBQ either.I guess you just show up early sat.and pay the $75 entry and fish sat.and sun.for cash prizes. Please don't quote me on any of this, but call port-side marine for clarification. |

Cape San Martin Buoy reached 62.4 degrees this afternoon. No new SSTs due to clouds. Forecast shows pretty much 10 to 15-kts through Tuesday of next week. |

The red light is out of PSL...about 1.5 miles SW of the breakwater. Folks usually catch salmon around there. Have you heard of any? |

the boats from monterey scored big yesterday at the davidson, they actually got hit before they got to their numbers, the boats caught peanuts and fish up to 25 lbs. they didnt have live bait, or they said they could have doubled their score, the skipper said. each boat caught between 15 to 25 albies. den tincancaptin |

sisy, i looked on terrifin and found the best looking water at 35/26 122/04 which is 60nm from morrow. the water that is connected to the davidson is 71 nm from morrow and at 35/36 122/16 i really think like harrell said that the water at 60nm is holding fish. den i have some electronic issues with my boat right now, when i get them working ill let you know. i hope that helps. den tincan |

We haven't had an SST for our area since 7/22 but the San Martin buoy is now at 60 degrees which could mean that the water that John (Virg's) caught those fish in sunday could have moved in closer since the San Martin buoy is 55nm out of Morro bay. Let's hope so ! |

Thanks for the clarification Steve. I understood 90% of that article as it pertained to the plankton, but hey sure made it hard to understand when throwing in the groundfish statements. Makes much more sense now, thanks again. D |

About the tribune article. Like most news, things are taken out of context because the writer doesn't know what the person they are interviewing is saying and then the interview-e looks dumb or sounds like they are saying something that is untrue. NOAA fisheries conducts rockfish surveys by doing the exact same transect every year (a so many mile stretch between point A and point B). They do the transect with a mid-water trawl (a fine mesh net that they drag through the upper water column). The fish that they are searching for are juvenile planktonic rockfish, not little rockfish, but little teeny, tiny rockfish (mm long, not inches). The abundance of planktonic rockfish are good indicators of the recruitment to the next year class. With very little upwelling, there are few plankton and very little for the little rockfish to eat...they die pretty fast without food. The rockfish spawn in late winter/spring with the idea that their eggs will hatch at a time of good upwelling and plankton blooms. That has been lacking in Washington, Oregon, N. Cali, and, somewhat, central Cal this year. I have a fish friend in Oregon who does these surveys for salmon out of the Columbia and it is looking even worse for the salmon. They are barely catching any, where they usually catch thousands. Of course they usually don't have 65 degree water on the shore and tuna 3 miles off the coast either. Interesting, for it is not El Nino or global warming, just a strange year for weather. Hope that helps, steve |
