Just checked Virg's recording and as of 6pm the Princess had 35 + albacore. I think it was a late afternoon bite. Don't know where but my guess is about 50-60 miles west of Morro Bay.

Fished PSL in the skiff today. Got a 1/4 scoop of huge, fresh dines...half of which rolled by 9 a.m. Checked out the breakwall, but the gin clear water had us heading out to the Pea Patch in short order. Drifted all the normal spots for 1 28" but, 1 26" ling, and a whopper cabezon. A couple of raked baits, but pretty slow.

Wanted first thank you all for the help about fishing conditions in Santa Cruz.

Short story 12 albies kept 8-32lbs, one 22lb salmon, one short and one baited sword fish….

Headed up Friday night from Ventura (6.5 hour haul) to arrive at the parking lot about 1.30. Greeted by the harbor patrol who asked for the launch fee and $20 to camp. He told us we could park on Lake Ave to avoid the camping fee. So we thanked him and moved to sleep for a few hours.

Launched at 5 – and got some bait from Bocci Boy. $30 for a scoop and a half of great chovies and some not so yet cured deans. All in all great bait.

Headed out towards the fleet with near the weather boy and dropped lines right after the hard edge of the break. Water temp got as high as 62.4. First stop was on the fish trap – and produced 2 bait fish all in the 8-1-lb range.

Things slowed down for a while – but the day wound up being very productive.
Fished 32/23 to 33/22 and there abouts for 3 more on bait, one more on the FT and the rest on the troll. Zuchini, Gerry Garcia, Zuch Broom and other bright colors did all the stops. None on Rapalas none for us on darker colors. Most folks seemed to be doing real good on the lighter colors, heard of one bluefin on a blue/white combo. The three larger fish were all singles on the troll.

Somewhere in that general area we came across a tailing sword… she was getting more and more active, swimming in circles. We didn’t really have the best setup but said what the heck. Made a 10foot leader with some 60lb floro, pinned on the largets dean we could find and made a slow loop around her. When the dean was about 30ft away, she turned and charged it… I never felt a pickup and she sank out – Wish I had my camera…

On the way in about 1.30 we decide to troll for a few salmon before heading in. Drop a watermelon Gold star down 205 in 235 feet of water with a pink hotshot dodger and begin to cut fish. 2 minutes later a nice salmon is being fought. We go look for the net, oopps she is in Ventucky… crap. So we bring the fish up to the boat tire her out I hop out on the swim step and after the second try grab her in the gills.. Big old fat salmon on the deck. The next drop we get picked up by a shaker who is promptly chomped on by a knothead.

We decide to call it quits and pack it for the barn. Long haul back to ventura, and now its time to cut the last few fish and head to a sushi party in SB..

Great weekend with some great buddies.

Limits of giant reds and , lings for the three of us Sat , went to the north.
Looks like if you want LFT you might head for S.D.
Make a two day on the CONDOR get them 10 big LFT , save your money and not have to wash the boat or clean fish, You will spend about $300.00 but it well worth it.

Kier and anyone else running tomorrow;

Four of us were out there wednesday. Our heading out of Morro bay was 200-215 . We hit a 4 degree break at about 40 miles which we worked for 1 1/2 hours for nada. Run another 10 miles and worked that area for nada then went to the donut and out to 45/40 for one 10lb albacore. Very little life on the outside. At 20 miles out on the way in we saw tons of life except no jumpers and the water was not very clean. The elbow was also checked for no fish. Don't know if there are any fish there but I would look outside the Cape San Martin buoy.

Kier: Warm water might be closer but clouds prevent seeing further inshore. What we can see lies aprox 68-miles from Morro at 34.40 and 122.00. That water streams north to the best looking edge curling around at 34.53 and 122.15, 73-miles aprox. No Chloro shots last night but most recent shots revealed clean blue out that way. Life will likely be located where the green meets the blue in 61 to 63-degrees. Hope you load up!

Got a response from Boxer!

Dear Mr. Burk:

Thank you for contacting me regarding
S.786, the National Weather Service Duties Act
of 2005. I appreciate the opportunity to
respond to your views, and I share your concerns
about this bill.

S.786 seeks to severely restrict the
functions of the National Weather Service (NWS),
which is run by the federal National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration. The NWS currently
offers a wide range of free weather services for
all Americans, including invaluable information
for airplane pilots, farmers, and those seeking
details about severe weather in their areas.
This bill would prevent the NWS from offering
these free weather services to the public.
Instead, private weather companies, which rely
primarily on the same data used by the NWS,
would charge Americans for their services.

The NWS provides a reliable and effective
public service that is utilized by over six
million Americans each day. S.786 eliminates
this valuable service and unfairly penalizes
people by requiring them to pay for information
that should be available free of charge. This
bill is currently in the Senate Commerce
Committee, of which I am a member. Rest assured
that I am not in favor of this bill and that I
will work with my colleagues to prevent this
bill from reaching the full Senate floor.

Again, thank you for writing to me.
Please do not hesitate to contact me again about
this or any other issue of concern to you.

Wanted to see if I could troll up a little info on fishing for the tuna out of the Monterey Bay area. We usually fish San Diego or Morro but neither are too hot at the moment and we are thinking of dragging up tonight from Ventura to fish the 601 and other areas to get some fresh blood. My skipper is on a plane today… and I don’t have access to some of his links.
What are our best options for launching? SC, Moss, Mont?

Can we park overnight there and crash in the boat for a few hours?

Is there bait available and if so where? What time does it open?

The weather on NOAA didn’t look too bad (NW WINDS 5 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3) is this the best site for up there?

What channel do you monitor up there.

Thanks for the help – we will be out on the Wild West….

had some excellent fishing for quality salmon up in santa cruz today. it only took us a few hours to boat 4 fish 22 to 28lbs. they all came on a chrome and green coyote spoon, 250' on the wire in 400' of water. i was using a 20lb ball. calm glassy conditions in the morning made it too easy. thanks bayside for the reports!

Glad that info/#'s helped you guys out. That's a nice haul of lft gang. Any size to your fish?

I'm just in from another islander. Made live squirts but the sea bass and butts were the missing link. We did land one decent croaker and dumped a heavy fish in the am. Mass numbers of calicos to 5-lbs all released along with log cudas, etc... We've had one great season so far on the exotics but I'm ready to fish tuna. Escarpment/Rodriguez looks right down this way if we can get some help with coverage.

Thanks to whoever, Dynamo Dan or Moorefish for the numbers, they made all the difference. Bill, the fish tasted so good off the barbeque I'm going to go get some more after I finish typing, thank you again.

Hey Moorefish thanks for the numbers, we were the Striper going out at 10.30 pm when you were coming in to the ramp. Steve B. Tim and myself ended up with 17 lft for the day at the 36.00 by 122.35 working north from there. Some of the fish came on the outriggers and others wanted the Boone birds hitting the transom. Great day a lot laughing and hi fives. I saw your post and realized you were the the guy we talked to.

I think the Weenie is 23 miles from Monterey on a 216 heading. On the Terrafin it is between the Monterey Canyon and Sur Canyon between the 500f and the 1000f lines with a 451 written on it to indicate the depth.

If thats wrong I hope someone will tell us both.

Four boats 600 miles and 1 small albacore. Salty Doc was still out there when the rest of us gave up so hopefully he found big schools. The donut, the elbow and all points in between were checked. Tons of life at 20 miles but very little on the outside.

*Sample Statement*
Dear Honorable Senator Feinstein / Boxer
I'm writing you because I'm strongly opposed to Senate Bill SB 786, which has been referred to committee.

This bill would prohibit NOAA from publicly
distributing climatic and oceanographic data it
currently publishes on its website. Under this bill, this and other data would still have to be collected by NOAA, but it would have to be disseminated by "commercial providers of products or services."

Presumably, these commercial providers would charge citizens for the service, and it is unclear if the commercial providers would have to remunerate NOAA.

If the Government funds collection of data, that data should be available to citizens, and not exclusively to commercial entities. Because so many of your constituents use or could potentially use the services NOAA currently provides, I urge you to make your strong disapproval of this bill readily apparent.

Refernce SB 786 and state your desire to see this bill not be made into law. The bill itself can be seen here:

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c109:s786:

Specifically read section 2(b) which states:

COMPETITION WITH PRIVATE SECTOR- The Secretary of

Commerce shall not provide, or assist other entities in providing, a product or service other than a product or service described in subsection (a)(1)that is or could be provided by the private sector unless--

(1) the Secretary determines that the private sector is unwilling or unable to provide such product or service; or

(2) the United States Government is obligated to
provide such product or service under international aviation agreements to provide meteorological services and exchange meteorological information.

Our interpretation of the bill indicates that NOAA
will only be allowed to issue severe weather alerts and all other forecast and weather data will be given to the private sector (commercial companies) for redistribution. It is unclear whether the data will be freely available to all commercial organizations and exactly who will have access and whether a price will be affixed.

This ambiguity will likely make for a poor
law, and hence the concern about equal access to
everyone.

A few minutes of your time could make a big
difference. Once the bill passes, there's no going
back. Thanks in advance for your concern.

Fresh Post off Bat Board:

Posted: 09 August 2005 at 1:04am | IP Logged

---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------

Went to the Davidson. Left the dock at 3:AM returned to the dock at 11PM. Been awake over 24 hours. Water has rolled over. Water gets colder and colder as you run toward the Davidson. At the Weenie it's 61.8'F By the time you reach the Davidson it's 57'F On the outside edge and 1/2 way down of the Davidson it goes back up to 60.5. The weenie is a bubble, That is why the bite there sucks and is getting worse by the day.
Marked and caught fish in the coldest water we could find. 36.00/122.35. Water was 57'F caught 6 - 30+ pounders in this area. Did a total of 16 Albacore for a season total of 85 so far. Apparently the water is hotter under the surface. Also big fish reported by the Cape Martin buoy but only biting right at dusk. Saw lots of jumpers that weren't takers.
To our surprise, on the way in we were greeted by a 4' white Marlin jumping and dancing across the water just at dusk 1/2 way between the weenie and the Davidson. Couldn't get him to go and it was getting dark so we pushed on in.

Hey Bill,

I'm in also. Maybe we can show Charles what fishing around here is really like. I'm back from the Big Island, Caught many Mahi Mahi to 35 lbs, and a rainbow runner, but no tuna, I am definitely ready for a screaming reel!

Just spoke to the Kenai who was 86 miles off Morro Bay. Beautiful weather. Water temp 30 feet below his hull was 58 degrees and clear. He saw no widelife from S.F. down. Maybe the albies have moved in closer. Can only hope...

Thanks for that albacore report. When you catch up on your rest could you provide any further detail as to conditions, water color and where the temp break was. Were the fish all bait fish or troll? The marine layer is clouding our SST images. We caught limits of big reds today 5mi out of Morro Bay.

LING EATER;
We fish at least once a week and some times twice a week ,off CAMBRIA we have a friend, I think I have said something about him before but has anybody had the same problem with this guy ? he will take you lings in a heartbeat , he can catch the thro backs before they reach the bottom, he is always there when we are , its not a sealion its a harbor seal gray with black spots, he appears to only have one eye and has a damaged right rear flipper , Friday we were out and he ate four 23 inch lings and a 26 incher that he caught on the way up on Blackie JR rod , he was able to pull it away from him but he had it so tore up it was only fit for seal food , he will not touch a red , or gopher but he will eat blues and jonnys.
In spite of him we did have three limits of nice reds jonnys and 4 nice lings .
So if any body else has this guy around let me know , maybe he lays on the rocks and waits for the KILLER/BS

Fished PSL in the skiff. Made one drift along the breakwall, but water was crystal clear and our confidence low that we could catch a fish if they could see us...so we headed up to the Pea Patch for 3 nice lings and no halibut. Not even a raked bait up there today...not sure where they went. Had another big something on..fought like made for about 20 seconds, pleeling off 50# and then sawing me off. Lots of bait balls around. I need to just spend a day fishing for T-sharks.

The wind gauge on the Santa Maria buoy coming back on line is thanks to NOAA, but it wouldn't happen without your local Fish & Game boat BLUEFIN and crew that is bringing the NOAA crews around to several of the weather buoys in the next couple days for maintenance.

So the next time that they board you and check your fish, thank them for doing this very important job.

I fished PSL today in the skiff for 2 24" halibut. Had another 5 or 6 raked baits and had another 3 solid hook-ups that either wrapped me around kelp or eel grass. Frustrating:/ Fished inside today, looked kinda snotty on the outside. Bait was very nice small to med dines with a few small chovies mixed in.
Hope to run for tuna if the weather cooperates. best fishes,
steve

The Santa Maria buoy's wind gauge went back on line at noon today. This buoy is located about 10 miles west of pt. Sal and about 15 miles south of where the PSL buoy was.

Ten Rescued From Charter Vessel Grounded On Clatsop Spit, Ore.

SEATTLE - The Coast Guard rescued ten people from an Ilwaco, Wash., based charter vessel that went aground in the surf on Clatsop Spit, Ore., near the mouth of the Columbia River today.

Ten people were hoisted by a Coast Guard helicopter crew just after 7 a.m., from the 42-foot charter vessel Katie after it ran aground about 6:15 a.m.

The master of the charter vessel Katie suffered minor injuries. The remaining crew and passengers were uninjured.

The Coast Guard received a Mayday call on VHF channel 16 from the master of the Katie reporting the boat had gone aground in the surf zone near Clatsop Spit.

A Coast Guard 47-foot motor lifeboat on bar patrol was diverted to the rescue. An H-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, in Warrenton, Ore., and a 25-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment, Wash., was also launched.

The Jayhawk helicopter crew conducted basket hoists of all ten people on board the vessel and flew them to Air Station Astoria.

Coast Guard Sector Portland, Ore., is investigating the accident.
