the local plan to look for albacore seems to me ...start at 35 10/122 00 (60 nm from avila).....then head due south over the elbow...the break runs south for over 40 miles just down and outside of the 1908 |

Steve, you will almost always catch the female halibut because the males are usually smaller and illegal in size, but I personally have caught a few large size males. When they spawn you'll notice the little males spunking all over as you unhook them. The largest male halibut I have caught was 38 inches. |

SST discussion: Great shots but nothing close for us. 50+ miles to the best looking areas. My first choice would be 35:00/122:00 because if you look at the Central CA Overview(2km) there is a secondary plume coming up from the SSW to the 00/00 spot. Also,if you remember Scott's report you can see why he liked the 1000 f line. If you want to see the best looking area look at the Monterey shot. There are two really good looking plumes, one between the guide and the pioneer and another one below the 601. There was a wide open bite below the pioneer a couple of days ago that even attracted the net boats. |

There is finally a GREAT sst! Argello Canyon, Sur Canyon and 30 & 50 miles due west of the Rock all have warm water. I'm not seeing that hard break so it could take some exploring. Get your gas cards out! |

Try to only post one photo per post on this site so this page doesn't get streched out making it difficult to read all the posts. Its a little programing flaw I can't seem to fix. Otherwise the photos are great. Now lets get some albacore. Bob |

Hey Guys, Steve has a couple of more Baja bus trips running out of Paso Robles for Sept and October of this year. I may go on the october trip to the bay of LA. Click on the "Great fishing trip" advertisement at the top of the page for details. I'll also be going to Malaque in november, Has anyone fished there? Roosters? Later, Stacey |

Fished PSL in the skiff today. The halibut were hungry today and we landed 4 nice halis (34, 30, 28, & 24 inches) plus something bust off, and 6-8 raked baits that were definitely halibut. The bait was huge (6-8"). Had a steady pick all day, but there was a flurry of action between about 11 and 1 pm. Two fish totally swallowed the bait!!! I mean hooks in the stomach, so they were hungry. We also caught 4-6 keeper lings, but let them all go. Once must have been 32"! As a strange side note: every fish that we've caught this year has been female. I think that's 20+ fish in the box and not 1 male. This is my first year fishing buts around here, is that normal??? best fishes, steve |

Thanks Scott and John for the reports. The wind is up pretty good this afternoon but should be back down wednesday. Let's hope that those deep marks were albacore and they will rise to the occasion when the wind is gone next week ! The marine layer on the outside is breaking up so we should get some decent satellite shots soon. |

Worked the 1000 ftm line Friday on the "Liquidate" from straight out up to the ledge around 35,45 & 122,15 for no love. Water was movin with the south push, full moon and pressure change. Lots of mixed color and temp. Best area was around the canyon on the 1000 ftm curve around 35,23 & 121,55. Lots of bait and life with marks deep. There is a band of off color 62.5 degrees out about 25 mi. with lots of life. Might happen when things settle down a little next week. Met Wes and crew at the ramp on their maiden voyage of Bula Bula. They looked ready for tuna. Harrell, lost your number, was going to call in the report. |

Had a nice day out at San Miguel yesterday, out towards the Whistler. Great crossings to and from Santa Barbara. Fast limits...lings to 14lbs, reds to 8lbs. A big boy johnnie bass, Miguel-style. Highlight was a big whitey under the boat that swam out to check my sea anchor. I saw 10 feet of him, there was probably 5 more. Seals skedaddled for a while after that! Yesterday's SST shows a temp break at 34:35 and 121:00. Which is just above arguello canyon.I have not heard any reports from that area but there have been several boats that checked the areas from the donut to outside San Martin buoy lately for nothing. That arguello canyon area has been a producer in the past so it might be worth checking. Haven't heard any report from Virg's boat yet. If they find fish at a reasonable distance then of course that is the place to go !! Good luck and if in cell phone range give me a call because there might just be an SST of that area tomorrow, 805 929 1724 |

Troy, If you have the time, learn the dropper loop as it is much easier to tie. Spider wire can easily cut you if you have to hand line I usually run 17# or 20# mono line for RF. Sometimes I'll run small shad on the dropper above an Iron as a teaser. there isn't a need for wire leader. You should be able to purchase most anything you need at Virg's. |

Two more quick ones before I go Today a guy at the tackle shop taught me how to hook up a spider hitch and told me to hook up two plastics at a time. He also told me to use 50lb test. I found some stealth spiderline at walmart for 10 bucks. It is 50lb test. Is this too big?? Also about the teeth. I have a few steel leaders. Should I use them? Shiny or black??? |

Troy, I heard if you bang the metal against the rocks on the bottom, it will attract the lings. I don't like casting with iron from a party boat, because if you snag the bottom, chances are you'll lose the lure. If your in your own boat and it happens, you can back up to it and maybe get it free. If the PB is on a pretty good drift (if it's windy) stick with the straight up and down stuff. If your iron has a trebble hook on it, change it out to a 7/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook or equivalent. You won't snag the bottom as bad and it's a lot easier to get it out of the throat of a lingcod. Remember, they have sharp teeth! Have a blast, you will catch fish! G |

Yes, it's true Troy. You can swim the bait you have or just jig it... with same results. I see you didn't make it up to MB today |

Is this true about just sinking the jig and popping it along the bottom??? What about the 6oz metal swimmer I have? I think I have to cast or troll with that one? |

Troy, Drew is right. Go with the heavier jig heads, you'll feel the bottom better. You can cast the plastics but you'll stand a better chance of getting snagged on the bottom (rocks). I would just drop'em straight down and bounce'em of the bottom just like you would do with the dropper set up. They sell the rockfish rigs there for a couple of bucks and they do well. Use heavy weight. Up to 1 pound if your rod will handle it. You'll want to get your bait down past the small blue rockfish as fast as you can. Too slow on the drop and the small blues will hit it on the way down. The heads with the brush on them are probably weedless jig heads. They may help a little in the rocks but they are not typically used for what you'll be fishing for. Remember, big baits mean big fish. Hope this helps, G |

Thanks for the advice, Geoff I did plan on setting up a drop line on a torpedo with some live bait for my girlfriend. She doesn't like to fish so I'll hook her up with that and man her pole. I hear people are having good luck with these types of lures and figured they may be better than live bait. Andrew, The 1/2 oz heads are on 5" fish traps. I told the guy at the store that Virg's suggested 2-4oz heads but he said that these traps with this head is a good set up. The heads have a brush tip like some lures so, I'm not sure what the purpose of it is. I bought a few 6" gulp anchovy lures as well and plan to get some bigger heads for them. I'm not sure that a 3 oz head will work with the 5" swimbait though??? |

Troy it sounds like you have the right idea but the 1/2 oz heads are light for the depth you will be fishing unless you are using the fish traps as a teaser. When you get to Virgs you can pick up some heavier heads I like a 3oz head on a 6 to 9 inch swimbait. As for how to fish I prefer the stern of the boat and I pitch out as far as possible and let it hit bottom and swim the bait back staying intouch with the bottom until verticle good luck Drew on the KENEKE |

Troy, All thats stuff is great, but I bring a box of trebil (sp?) hooks and a couple of 4 oz torpedos. They should have live bait. If they dont, then bring what you have. Plus they have an awesome tackle shop there at the landing. Good luck |

Hi I am coming up to Morro Bay tomorrow from So Cal to fish a half day from Virg's Landing (girlfriend's mom is treating us). I haven't fished in a long time. We are going after ling/rockcod and halibut. I was looking for any tips. I just went and picked up a 6 oz metal swim bait, a 2 oz mackeral betta bait, a package of fishtrap plastics along with some 1/2 oz jigheads. I'm going to pickup some gulp lures to go with my jigheads as well. Am I hooked up? Is there anything else I need? I was also wondering if I should be trolling or casting the lures? I'm not sure I'll be able to cast without spooling out the line. |

I just returned fron H & M landing out of SD. 37 boats (all chartered, 6 bodies per boat) 4 albies ! That's right, I said 4 albies ! And after spending a night in a hotel my cost was $800.00. And sorry to say, I didn't get one of the 4 fish either. Their 'excuse' was the water has gotten to warm for the LFT's. Reckon next time I'll buy a $400.00 boat, $300 in fuel & $100 of bait and head to Moss. |

I forgot to mention the reports from SD it looks like the LFT have all but left the area, the reports show less than 10 albacore, the yellowtail have shown up now. you can check it out at fishermanslanding.com. Good luck hunting ,I think the KILLER B,s will fuel up before the diesel goes up again and wait a couple weeks for the wind to go away, maybe the winds will blow in the warm water and some fish. Looks like we're going to hunt on Friday due to the weather coming up for the weekend. Still don't know if we'll launch in Morro or Monterey. Looks like Virg's spot was closer to Monterey and you might toss in some pink meat to boot. It will be our first run on Bula Bula... (we miss you Ratz!) You've heard us out there on Scott's boat the Sea Marmot for the last few years. We've partnered on the Bula Bula and look forward to the new range and comfort. Thanks, Harrell. A couple of us from Santa Barbara are thinking of towing up Friday to look around. Haven't heard anything solid since the Princess's fish, and of course SST and Chloro info are virtually nil right now. Winds look to come up gradually through Saturday, then whammo. If you plan on looking for albacore you better do it this week before sunday! The computer models show winds to gale force next week and 25kts sunday. On the upside we should finally get some SST's and maybe the wind will blow the tuna into us ! |

Late report...but what the heck! Headed south from PSL on Saturday and had Purisima all to ourselves. For 2 of us we hauled a limit of Reds all in the 6-9 lb range, a limit of big Browns, 4-6 lbs and 4 Lings ranging from 29-32" that all tipped the DFG Biologists scale. Headed back in by 11:00 for a nice, smooth ride uphill. Very favorable weather and swell for the trip. Holy Cow, it looked like a bath tub out there today! Could have run both ways at 25+ knots and not felt a drop of spray! |

The Coke plant is just South of Oceano Rech.Area.Look for the smokeing stacks a little ways in from the beach. It's a Conoco refinery that makes coke for fueling furnaces to make them burn hotter. |

Darby, Thanks for lookin' into the web site issue. Most of us know what you do to help & support the sport fishing industry and appreciate your efforts very much. If a 3rd of the fisher-people put in as much time into sportfishing as Darby does......... WELL, We could possibly fish year-round ! ! ! |

Hi everyone: I'm a grad student at Scripps down in San Diego and I'm doing a diet study of albacore by collecting stomachs from landed fish. Having a very hard time getting albies - weather is bad in Oregon, water is too warm in SD. Are there any boats who might let me tag along on some trips if you think you'll land albacore? I'm small but I carry a standard cooler for dry ice (to freeze the stomachs asap). I heard from the captains in SD that Morro was the place to be for albacore - is it true? MB sounds good too. Thanks very much and I'm happy to go into details if anyone is interested. |

Yes, our webmaster is supposed to be posting for us daily. The phone is the most current becasue we update it every time we hear from the boat throughout the day. For a daily summary you can go to: http://www.sportfishingreport.com/pages/landingdetail.php?landing_id=1 I'll have the webmaster post it daily or pull it off and be done with it. |

Friends: I am encouraged to hear that maybe the LFT are moving in closer and in bigger numbers. In the meantime ... it was a wonderful day on the water today (Sunday). We decided to fish down toward Pt. Buchon about 5 miles from mouth of Morro Bay harbor since we did not get out on the water until about noon. Still loaded up with 3 limits of nice size rock fish and a nice ling. We headed back in by 2:30. We are very fortunate to live here. Took my neighbor Levi Olson out ... and here are two of his fish.
