Weather: Just checked the latest computer models and this weekend is not looking very good . The window of opportunity is Wed/thurs/fri. The swell will remain around 6 ft but don't know the duration. Sure hope they get the buoy reports back on line today ! |

SST/Chlorophyll: Really great shots from yesterday! That plume on the 35:10 line seems to be charging the beach and the clean blue water is right with it. A lot of "dirty" water on the inside but that can be a good thing to provide feed for the baitfish. You can usually bait out in Morro Bay anytime. There is someone on the boat when the albacore are out here. We baited out at 3:30 am last friday. |

Mike, Bait boat opens @ 5 AM The bait in Morro is fantastic ! 5-7" dines & sards. On Fridays' trip out (53nm) all stayed alive until we dumped'm to the gulls in the harbor upon our return. Not a single bait fish. All on the troll. The usual stuff: black & purple & the mexican flag. Virg's boat skippered by Michelle caught'm trollin' swim baits. Good luck with whatever you use. Stay safe. |

Hey, I got this off the Net tonight. This forecaast seems to be right on. To bad about the buoys. == DCPP Weather Forecast for Monday 08/29/05 == SEA/SWELL: Note: For the second time in less than one year the National Data Buoy Center in Hancock County, Mississippi has been taken offline. The first time was because of Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and today due to Hurricane Katrina. Data from NOAA marine buoys in the Pacific will not be available. One of the NOAA marine buoys in the Gulf of Mexico yesterday reported wave heights of over 40 feet. A cold upper-level trough off the Pacific northwest will move inland today accompanied by falling pressures inland and intensifying high pressure off the west coast. This condition will produce strong northwesterly winds along the California coastline. These winds will produce 6 to 8 foot northwesterly (290°) sea/swell (with a 5-9 second period) along the Diablo Canyon coastline late this afternoon through tonight, decreasing to 5 to 7 feet on Tuesday and further lowering to 4 to 6 feet (with a 7-11 second period) on Wednesday. This northwesterly sea/swell will further lower to 3 to 5 feet on Thursday and Friday. |

JP, Wasn't implying you in perticular. There's many others NOT in the learning process. They know, yet still break the rules. Don't sweat the 'farm' over the 250.00 per fish JP. It was a typo. Was s'pose to be 25.00. You can still rack up a heafty sum with multiple violations. I've found it's always best to KNOW the rules before playing the game. You can get all the info you'll ever need by doing a 'google' search. Typing in Dept. of Fish & Game. |

All the buoy reports are shut down due to the hurricane.. The forecasts still look good for wednesday thru the weekend. The swell probably remain about 6 ft. This morning's SST looks great with some closer water on the 35:10 line at 121:40 with a pretty hard break. |

Hey JP, I've seen 250.00 per fish before. I've also seen DFG confiscate boats, tackle, etc etc. There's nothin' like a few bad apples ruining it for the rest of us. But their only going to make it harder on themselves and the people their with. The capt'n/owner of the boat is responsible for whos' on board. Why take unnecessary chances ? There's plenty for all to enjoy. If'n they need that many fish...Go get a comerical license. Boat & all fishermen aboard must have one. |

Mark, We also fish a 21' seaswirl and have fished many boats in the past 18' Radon, 22' Whaler, 17'Whaler and they all had good and bad points. As far as safety is concerned I think the Whalers were the best but they lacked a little in the comfort area since they were both open boats. The Radon was also very seaworth but proved to be a gas hog with an old outboard. The seaswirl is the most efficient with diesel power and the most comfortable with a steep deadrise hull and an enclosed cabin, it was also the most expensive. Davis is the Caddi of boats around here, but unless you have a spare $100K I wouldn't even look at one, since you will have your heart set on one after that. I agree with the previous post about looking at many boats and taking a sea trial. I also agree about contacting the coastgaurd auxillary. They sometimes put on safety classes and also maritime navigation courses. Don't go out without a mapping GPS. The fog can settle on the water in a matter of minutes and if you are not prepared, finding the harbor can be interesting. Also don't become dependant on your GPS, Know you position and compass heading home. As you can see boating and fishing are highly addictive. When the weather is like it is this weekend, stay home and live to fish another day. |

Harrell, As far as I know, we were the only ones who did not turn back early. The bump was a little nicer about 40 miles out, actually it was not too bad. Wish we could have continued, but it was prudent to get back, as we expected it to really pick up later in the day and we had a jury rigged fuel line (a Bic pen body saved us as a coupler). Next week! Will |

Just got back form two weeks in cabo san lucas. fishing was not up to par concerning the dorado and tuna. I did however catch a 55 lb dorado, 35 lb dorado, and numerous smaller ones. striped marlin fishing was quite good. Had a 5 fish day with three on a triple which was a blast. These fish were from 100 lbs to 140 lbs. Throw in a couple of 20 lb jack crevele, a sailfish and a few other stripers for a good four days of fishing. Lost a couple of evasive wahoo to boot. Lost one fishing day due to hurricane hillary sweeping a little close to the cape, water was very rough and the port captain closed the harbor for a day. |

SST/Weather The break has moved in a few miles and there is a nice finger inside the 122:40 line which is less 40nm. The computer models show much better weather starting wednesday though the weekend. Will; Congrats on the yellowtail, pretty rare up here. Too bad you had to turn around, with a start like that it probably would have been a really great day. What did you hear out there about albacore? I heard that Matt baited out 6 boats but have not heard any reports yet. |

Mark, I have a 21' Seaswirl with an inboard-outdrive. I have owned a 19' Bayrunner, 19' Glasspar and a 23' Seabird Hull. These boats have caught 1000's of fish both fresh and salt water. I would suggest going out on a few different hull styles from Port San Luis. There are a lot of boats for sale and you could ask for a sea trial. You have to pay for the launch but it is large area of water and you can get the feel of the ocean and the boat in a safe area. Mark as you figure out what size boat you can handle just remember never go out without a VHF radio. Cell phones are a good but I wouldn't go out without my VHF working. The other safety items are required by law and you can get info from the coast guard aux. or the coast guard in Morro Bay. My 21' boat will handle anything that is safe to be out in. Just remember this, there are old fishermen and bold fishermen but there are no old bold fishermen. Good Luck John |

Hey, fish those kelp paddies out in the albacore zone. We trolled near one Saturday and hooked up two yellowtail! Anybody ever heard of yellowtail up here? One was about 25 lbs and the other was about 10 lbs. We had boat problems soon after that and had to limp in after temporary repairs. It was really lumpy out there, but fishable. I will post a picture of the yellowtail when Woody emails them to me. Will |

Fished PSL in the skiff again today. Fished the Pea Patch until @ 10, then the wind came up pretty good. Got two nice halibut, 26"& 30", and a 30+ inch ling(released). Moved inside to the breakwall and the flatties were on the chew. Had one on my initial drop! Had probably 10 pick-ups, 5 fish on and 4 to the boat in the next 2 hours, until we ran out of bait. Landed 3, two keepers, 24 & 26". Tried to call others in to the bite, but no one responded. It was like a sauna in the inside!!! Bait was huge dines, and many rolled throughout the day. best fishes, steve |

Hello, I follow this post everyday, as often as possible! I have to say however, I live vicariously through you all. I have little time to get on the water during the week unless it’s after 4pm do to work. I am looking to purchase a boat however; currently I kayak out of PSL or north in the Big Sur area. I have several questions and don't feel it is necessary to bother the board with all of them at this time. I would like to ask though what size craft is safe. 20' 21' etc. The other; a local place to get safety training on radio and navigation/onboard boat requirements E.G. flares, life vest, flags. I boat often in lakes and putz around but know little about the ocean out side of the breakers. I use to scuba dive so I know the safety signals and tide charts well. Thank you in ADVANCE, Mark. |

"SST Discussion" follow up. Look at the SST for Central California Overview for aug 21. If you remember my post of aug 22, I described the secondary plume that was coming from the SSW and indicated 35:00/122:00 would be a good place to look for the tuna. Since then the water moved in and up a bit and wham we caught albacore at the top of that plume!! Also Scott Cyr suggested the 1000 fathom line in that area and wham more albacore ! |

We left the launch at about 3am for a 3+ hour run uphill in the snott. Still some getting used to the boat but we did ok. Found warm water about 3 miles inside of Bob's numbers from Thursday and dropped lines. Had our first jig fish within 20 minutes. Couldn't get any baitfish on that stop. It was about 2.5 hours before our next stop, a double on jigs. We worked all over that area for the next 5 hours for nada. We were near Michele towards the end of the day. We worked the inside cold edge and pretty deep into the warm water. We were dragging 7 lines all day, the usual spread plus 2 on outriggers and a fishtrap deep down the middle. We saw Mark at the lot and he had 18! Thanks to everyone out there, it was great fishing with you. We'll be back on 'em with a new finder when the wind and water decided to play nice again. |

All our fish today were jig-fish also. Multiple hook-up stops. In fact, one LFT was caught taking the jig as it dropped on the fall as both Captn' Grey Light (Stuart) and I had our hands full fightin' 2 others. Was 'snotty' in both directions today and the forecast is for it to be getting even snottier as the weekend finishes out & a new week starts. LFT fevor or not... If you're going out in the next 7-10 days, don't take any unneccessary chances. 'Buddy-boat' with others. Above all...BE SAFE, STAY SAFE, live long to fight the LFT's of tomorrow. Because they surely have to get 'BIGGER' Swap-meet Dave |

Looks like I am the first one in. All in all a pretty good day with everyone catching some albacore. They were mostly 8-10 lbs but we did get one 32lbs, after it was bled. (weighed by F&G) and 5 small ones. 19/51 was where the big one was caught and the rest not very far from there. Pretty lumpy out there and whitecaps all day with rough ride in at 20mph. Tomorrow will probably be worse so be careful if you go. Matt had nice big sardines and we did not lose a single one going out or in.All our fish were jig fish, couldn't get a bait stop going but we really tried. We had water as warm as 62 after we hit the break. |

FISH STORY (Actually it's a mammal story) I will keep it short since it looks like Bob infected the board with longfin fever. Great job on finding the fish and sharing the info. We went out of MB thursday morning to run for the lighthouse to do some bottom fishing. We were near Cambria and running full speed on the Killer B's which is about 20mph (21' Stiper Diesel). The water was flat calm with very little swell and a little bit of marine layer. All of the sudden, out of nowhere, a adult Humpback whale decided to surface directly in front of us. We turned hard left immediatly but there was no time to avoid the inevitable impact with the whale. We hit on the starboard side of the boat with an impact similar to a major car accident. I expected to look and see water rushing in the boat but there was none. Seems the only damage the whale did was some gelcoat damage that looks only cosmetic. we were very lucky to avoid injury and major boat damage. I don't think the whale even knew he was hit. I have been told that the adults can weigh 80 tons. Scary incident. We saw lots of whales the rest of the day so be careful if you are running this weekend. We did end the day with limits of nice reds and lings. Hope you guys slay the albies today. We are well over due. |

Stuart, Dave Flack here. If you can handle 2 crew & yourself that should get the cost down to a reasonable 125.00 each. I spent last season with John R and Ray night watchin' on the Admrial. You can give me a call if'n you'd like. 588-1394 |

Bob ask me to post the details for him because his net is down: The fish were caught at 47 miles on a 257 heading. All were caught on bait or iron under birds and jumpers. The weather was great and the water was blue. |

We will be launching 3-4 am at Morro Bay. The weather looks good for tomorrow with the possibility of a breeze in the afternoon. The visible satellite shot this afternoon shows it to be clear out past the area where Bob and co. caught those fish so we should have an SST sometime tonight. Matt has sardines so everything is looking good fo tomorrow ! |

Mike, to make a poke pole you need a 6-8 foot piece of bamboo(stiff)and a straightened coat hanger. twist a small loop on one end of the wire hanger.attach that end of hanger with a screw through the loop to the end of pole.run other end of hanger through a snap sweivel and twist a loop to secure. put a 4/0 hook on about 12 inches of 30lb mono and attach to sweivel.bait w/squid stick pole in the rocks and hold on, good luck! |

As I remember it a poke pole is made by using a broomstick with a straitend clothes hanger attached to the end, then about 6-10ft mono (heavy) tied to a large hook, bait with whatever you find under a rock in a tide pool (small octopus) Then at low tide, you pull the bait along the rocks as you walk. Good Luck |

mike, the pea patch is about 2 mi. north of the break water. between lone rock(1st rock you come to) and pecho rock(next larger rock). look for a farm bldg. on the field above, and a small stretch of sandy beach below. good luck, rog |

We are starting to kick around the idea of a run on Thursday or Friday. Not sure if we'll launch in Morro or trailer up to Monterey. I'm kind of liking the north edge of the break around Sur Canyon |
